MEMBER-SON NIGHT General Meeting~ June 16th

For Member-Son

Night, the Howell Nature Center will present…

Birds of

Prey ~ Work Bee ~ June 20th ~

The May annual work bee was cancelled due to rain and was moved to the regular work bee on May 23rd - and what a beautiful sunny day we had. There was a great turn out and everyone had a good time. The grounds looked great by the end of the day. Thanks to everyone who came out.

We also finally got a couple of good Fridays in May to kick off the Classic Car Cruise. We have many new cars this year. I hope to see the Cruise keep growing and look forward to seeing many of our new members come out, enjoy the show and have dinner outside at the grill or come in for the Fish Fry.

This past turkey season had many members traveling all around the state. From what I heard the ones who stayed in the southern part of state had more successes than the hunters who went north, although everyone had fun whether they bagged one or not.

There will be many things to do at the club this June, starting with the 5th annual Walleye tournament on June 5th with Multi-Lakes, Windsor Sportsmen’s Club and the Oakland County Sportsmen’s Club all leaving out of the Toledo Beach Marina. They will then return to the club for the weigh in, and then the best part - a Walleye dinner and plaques to the winners.

The club will be hosting the 5th annual National Patrol Rifle Competition on Sunday June 6th with set up on the 5th. Much help is needed to put this event on and help set it up.

There is also a Sporting Good's Swap Meet on Sunday June 6th in the Club House Meeting Room.

On June 11th 12th and 13th, the Nineteenth Annual Summer Rendezvous will be held on the grounds and this is always a great time.

With all the special events I look forward to seeing everyone around the club this June, not to mention all our regular events.

April 21, 2020, A late model pickup turns off Newton Parkway between the cleaners and the tanning shop. The driver is taking his Grandson shooting but is stopped by this sign.

REED LAKE PARK Visitors must observe the following rules Hours, 8am to 8pm No Weapons allowed

No Shooting allowed No Alcohol No Fires No Camping No Music No Pets

Epilogue: Multi-Lakes Conservation Association (MLCA) founded in 1942….

It can happen. Read your Multi-Laker financials. Look around at the empty businesses and buildings. When did you last shop at a K Mart or see a Farmer Jack? Some businesses have failed through no fault of their own. Others have held on to outdated standards from the past, not planning for tomorrow. Successful businesses plan ahead. Multi-Lakes, must meet the financial, and competitive challenges of today and the future. Change is hard & 2010 is a critical year. We must work together to improve and move ahead if we expect a future for our Club. Sincerely, ~Don Navigato

~ Membership Secretary ~ Well I got through my first Membership

Initiation Meeting as your Membership Secretary on May 15th. I have to say it was a learning experience, but also a very fun event. I can’t thank the chairpersons and officers enough for their help and guidance. We promoted 54 people from Conditional to Probationary status. This is a great start and I know that we can continue to grow this club with quality members. My goal is to have at least 3 Initiation meetings this year. The original intent was for 4 meetings, but I needed to wait until we passed the new By-Law in March. It was great to see that a lot of the Conditional members had attended functions and started to accrue hours. I know I am repeating myself, but with all the new members it is important that we remember to wear our name badge. I stressed that to the new Probationary members so we can get to know names and faces. Thanks again to everyone for making my experience as Membership Secretary a fun time.

Don’t forget to sponsor at least one new member! Let’s make 2010 a banner year, ~ Mark Geiger

~ Recording Secretary ~

Greetings to all: Welcome to all the new members joining

our exceptional organization! Now that it’s your club too, come out and show it off to your friends and family – it’s here for you to enjoy, building friendships and memories. Veteran members – please welcome the newer members and share your knowledge and great experiences!

Mark your calendars for… *National Patrol Rifle Conference is June 6th – an

incredible event and we can participate! *Beef Cookout is July 31st – slow cooked top rounds,

music, dancing and fun – an excellent way to spend a summer evening, only $10 per person.

*Car Cruise/Fish Fry Fridays – Held every Friday night! Come out to see the classics and dine at the fish fry or grab something off the grill outside! Thanks to everyone who helps make this club what it is today and strive for a better tomorrow! Best wishes, ~ Tracey Griggs

~ Treasurer ~ Happy Father’s Day to all of our

dad’s, hope you enjoy your day.

This month I am going to get into what kind of things we all can do to help out with the funds. The biggest thing any of us can do is find us more Members. Not just anybody but someone who will be of value to the Club and the Club will be of value to them. Next point out things that need repair before they become big things that need repair. Let us know if you see any waste that we can stop, lights left on, heat set to high, A/C set to low those kind of things to help us save money.

Be fair about what we expect for free food and drink, don’t abuse the system. Come to the Work Bee’s and help us save money by doing repairs our selves. Take care of Club property so we don’t have to pay for things to be fixed. Return all Club equipment to its proper place, so we don’t pay to replace it. Help put on an event or assist with a standing committee to raise more money. Any and all of these items will help us survive the tough times we are going through.

Later, ~ Dave;

Chairmen’s Meeting Minutes – May 5th 2010 Vice President Don Navigato called the meeting to order at 7:33pm & led the chairmen in the pledges. A moment of silence was then observed in honor of Frank Zoch.

Don then read the proposed reservation dates with one addition. Motion to approve dates: Marie Miller/Pete Cesaro Sr. Carried with 1 opposed. (Cal Kittinger) Discussion followed. Motion to conditionally approve the dates for Line Dancing pending Board Approval of that activity: Pete Cesaro Sr./Cal Kittinger

President’s Report: Russ DeVriendt stated that the Annual Workbee was held off due to weather and the next regular workbee would become the annual. Motion to start a new committee for Dock & Lakefront with Ron Dubois as Chairman: Cal Kittinger/Chris Peltier Carried unopposed. Other Chairman changes: Fred Koby will take over Fish Fry, and Ron Davis will be removed from Cowboy Action Shooting. Looking for people to take over Frank Zoch’s chairmanships.

Vice President’s Report: Don Navigato said that 46 members and 11 new members were at the last Workbee despite the rain out. Good Old Days will be on August 26th, and a committee/volunteer meeting will be held on May 20th. Quit Smoking & Weight Control Classes had 28 attendees, and the club made a profit on the two events.

Membership Secretary: Mark Geiger has the next New Member Meeting planned for Saturday, May 15th from 10 to noon. Mark is personally calling all of the 80 new members & their sponsors. There are already 10 people in the next group of applicants. Discussion followed.

Treasurer: Dave Fisher stated that financially speaking we are behind where we were last year. Fundraising & Shooting activities are down, but the new membership procedures should help. Dave stressed the need for more teamwork and cooperation in these tough times.

OLD BUSINESS Cal Kittinger talked about mining the ranges for lead as soon as possible. We are sitting on a lot of money. Discussion followed.

ROUND TABLE Pete Cesaro Sr. – Summer Skeet & Trap League has started, but there is still time to join. The trap machine repair area in the pole barn was established with donated equipment & money, so there has been no cost to the club. Bud Hope has separated the lighting switches, so all fields do not have to be turned on to use just one.

Marie Miller – Thanks to the Haunted Forest crew for such a good cleanup job this year, it made getting the outdoor archery range ready much easier. A search for the Archery plaques & trophies that were stored when the range was remodeled, proved to be a futile and occasionally insulting effort. Marie prowled around attics, closets, and other storage areas. When finally going to search the pole barn, she was challenged by someone who told her that the Archers never had any space in there. Rude actions & self interests are not what this club needs. Working together with respect will help make the club as great as it once was. If anyone knows where the missing items might be please contact Marie.

Dave Mercieca – Wood splitting by the Rendezvous group was rained out with the last workbee, but will try again on May 23rd.

Clint Double – Rendezvous June 11, 12 & 13, come out to see us!

Pete Rinehart – Thanks to all who donated to Horticulture.

Eric Manning – The National Patrol Rifle Competition is June 6th with setup on the 5th. Come to help and/or watch. Members will get law enforcement pricing, and free demo’s in the vendor’s area.

Carl Sundberg – Cowboy Action practice Saturday May 8th, 9:30 to 1:00. Guns & ammo will be supplied to those that would like to try this kind of shooting sport.

Cal Kittinger – Women On Target was well attended with 52 participants and many instructors & helpers. Breakfast snacks & lunch were server, and thanks to Jim Ashcraft for cooking for the event. Also thank you to Cowboy Action for the lunchtime demo. The next Basic Pistol Class will be on May 11th and about 6 people are signed up at this time. The next CPL Class will be on May 15th, and have about 16 to 20 students.

Bill Brennecke – Combat Pistol will becutting back for the summer, by taking Saturday shoots out of their schedule.

Marshall Maybrier – Reminded the chairman about the upcoming pole barn cleanout.

Dave Chappel – Sorry about having to cancel the Annual Workbee, that was the first time in memory, though some of the members stuck around & got a lot of work done regardless of the weather.

Larry Cohorst – Reporting for Lyn Lash that she is planning a Sault St. Marie casino trip. Don Navigato requested that Lyn submit the dates for approval.

Dave Mercier – Slingshots are wrapped up for the year and he & Mark Geiger will step down, with Jim Morphew & Charlie Stevens taking over as chairmen.

Chris Peltier – On the subject of Slingshot, thanks you Marshal Maybrier who voluntarily showed up every Thursday to bartend.

NEW BUSINESS Lucy Petrowski asked if there were any rules for starting new committees, events, or fundraisers? Dave Fisher responded that there is no official procedure, but things of that nature should be brought up before the Board. Discussion followed.

Pete Cesaro Sr. inquired about the bus trip to Windsor Sportsman’s Club. Discussion followed.

Motion to adjourn at 9:08pm Cal Kittinger/Chris Peltier. Carried unopposed.

Respectfully submitted, Dave Leonard, Editor, The Multi-Laker [email protected]

Good Old Days planning is ahead of schedule; first meeting May 24th; adding craft show, silent auction and temporary tattoos; more vendors working with car show. Recent section leaders are: Louise Shell - craft show; Kitty Lewan - silent auction; Jim Ashcraft - parking. Many others have stepped up to volunteer. Discussion followed. Cal will pursue acquiring another Matthew’s Bow for raffle.

RECORDING SECRETARY’s REPORT: Tracey discussed the following: Read letters from Lynn Lash regarding the 2011 casino trip, her need to take a sabbatical from Good Old Days, and the Winter craft show schedule. Read letter requesting permission for a Susan G. Komen fundraiser. Discussion followed. Tracey Griggs/Cal Kittinger moved to receive and file the letters. Discussion followed. IN FAVOR – 13; OPPOSED – 1 (K. Behrens). MOTION CARRIED. Tracey noted that the motions book is not yet completed due to extenuating circumstances, but will be next month. Dan Peltier mentioned that he may be able to acquire donated projectors and screens for M.L.C.A.

Discussion followed.

TREASURER’s REPORT: Dave discussed the following: Shooting, social events, fundraising, food service & education income down from prior year; only thing up is facilities costs over $4.6k. Down $11.6k for the year, $28.7k down from same period last year. As B.O.D., we have to run the club as a business, and separate personal from the needs of the club. Need to get many more new members to increase membership, involvement, and volunteering. Been over ten years since we’ve increased dues, and want this as a last resort. Critical to increase income, decrease costs, and maintain and repair the overall property.

Cal noted the motion to increase bar pours from 1.5 oz. to 2 oz. was a 33% increase in cost. Dave stated that bar costs as well as others will need to be addressed in the near future, and there are facilities and functions in this club that are losing money. Finance Committee meeting soon, and then Dave intends to present the committee’s findings. Dave Fisher/Tracey Griggs moved to receive and file the Treasurer’s Report. WITHOUT OBJECTION

Dave noted missed window to kill vegetation at S&T to mine the lead – we are sitting on a great investment. Dan plans to spray after N.P.R.C. shoot; spray again in the Fall, then lead can be recovered next summer. Discussion followed.

Dave noted that a non-member got up and spoke at the last general membership meeting making incorrect allegations regarding a club raffle. Dave wanted to note that the way we do our raffles has been complemented by our inspectors; our records are accurate, up to date and in compliance with all the state requirements. Bingo next week will draw great participation due to the size of the jackpot. Need assistance with Bingo to meet and exceed the patrons needs. Need to review opening up the indoor ranges for just a few people to alleviate expense of opening. Dave Fisher/Cal Kittinger moved to approve Club Manager Barry Anderson’s vacation days as requested. WITHOUT OBJECTION 6 Continued on page 14…

I had my pop-up blind set up in the middle of a 35 acre alfalfa field. Four big Tom's entered the field 250 yards

away. The boss gobbled and displayed. A hen immediately yelped from the

corner of the field. The Tom's headed in her direction. I yelped on my slate

call and they turned toward my decoys. About 50 yards away they seemed to hang up however a little breeze made

my jake decoy in half-strut, wiggle. They came charging in. The boss

stopped and displayed 2 feet in front of my hen decoy. The 20 yard shot

yielded a heavy bird with a 10" beard and wide 1 1/8" spurs.

Those Great Friday Nights at M.L.C.A.! By Tracey Griggs

Looking for something fun, inexpensive and relaxing to do on a Friday night this summer? Then Multi-Lakes has your answer! Every Friday night our club offers to all who would like to join both a fantastic fish fry and our fabulous car cruise.

The fish fry has been a frequented event for decades. It’s an all you can eat affair, offering not only baked and fried fish, but also broasted chicken, potatoes, salad bar, veggies and breads.

Fred Koby is the chairman for the committee, working with six different crews on a rotating schedule. When chatting with Fred regarding the function, he commented that the fish fry has excellent attributes; it’s an opportunity to come to the club with your friends and family, plus it’s a great fundraiser for the club. Fred also wanted to thank Ken Behrens for his years of dedication, recently passing the chairmanship to Fred.

Each crew has a crew leader, who trains and manages the other volunteers, covering the kitchen, clean up and cashiering duties.

During the fish fry each week the Gun-A-Week drawing is pulled and the winner announced.

The hours of the fish fry are 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, year round. Cost is $8 for a general ticket, seniors over 62 years old are $7.50, and children 5 – 12 years old are $5.50. Come on out and enjoy!

The car cruise is truly spectacular, for the patrons can truly take their time and behold the classics, chat with the owners, and swap car stories.

This is the fourth year of our car cruise and it continues to grow in participation. Drivers are encouraged to bring out their cars and park them on our main field, in the center of the grounds. Rows upon rows of beautiful cars to be beheld by all guests.

Each ‘cruiser’ gets a driver ticket upon entry, and each evening there are six prizes awarded through the driver raffle. Thanks to our local Auto Zone, Knight’s Auto, and Murray’s Auto Parts who have supported M.L.C.A. with prize donations!

There is no admission charge for the drivers or the guests enjoying the show. Participants are not required to be members. Cruisers arrive throughout the afternoon and early evening, and the event wraps up generally around dusk.

Skip Worden has been the chairman of the event since its inception, and you can see him out there running the event nearly every Friday. Skip commented that he loves getting the opportunity to show

off the club, the cars and provide everyone with a great time. Skip also noted that if a person is looking for a burger rather than going into the fish fry for dinner, we do have a small grill area set up so folks can grab a bite outside as well.

Skip is always looking for people to help staff the grill, and crews are assigned on a rotating schedule. If you haven’t seen this event, come out and enjoy the view!

These two Friday night functions offer a full evening of fun and food. Many patrons stroll around and look at the cars, then grab a bite to eat at the fish fry or the outdoor grill, and then back out to look at the cars again to chat with the owners and other guests appreciating their beauty.

Then, if you are looking for dessert, the Boy Scouts frequently sell ice cream within the fish fry. For members interested in volunteering to work the event, please contact the chairmen. For new members, this is an easy way to get two functions in one night and meet many club members participating in the events.

All in all, it’s a wonderful way to spend an evening close to home and to enjoy your club with friends and family. Please come out and enjoy your Friday evenings with us!

Multi-Lakes Conservation Association. Thank you all for your continuing support.
