President Report August 2013
UWA Beverley Design Studio Senior Landscape Architecture students from UWA’s Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts will be undertaking a “Beverley Design Studio” over the next 13 weeks in their final semester. The students visit Beverley 2nd – 5th August to undertake a broad range of research and consultation which includes natural environment, biodiversity, heritage, indigenous, community, culture and arts, review of the townscape plan and a variety of information gathering with an aim that various projects be developed from the study. The Community is invited to attend an initial student presentation planned for Monday 5 August 10am – 12pm at the town hall.
Constitutional Recognition of Local Government Council has resolved not to support Constitutional Recognition of Local Government in the proposed referendum. Local government is already recognised in the State Constitution, dual recognition will cause jurisdictional uncertainty, and providing the State and Federal governments work together, funding should continue to be provided to Local Government as it has in the past. There also appears to be an undemocratic allocation of funding to support a balance view, from which the Australian population can make a reasoned decision. Should you require further information regarding Councils resolution we will be in attendance at the Beverley Show on Saturday 24 August. Bush Fire Brigades Following previous discussion regarding the issue of being unable to find members to take on Fire Control Officer roles within the existing 9 Bush Fire Brigades, the FCO’s have agreed on the formation of 6 Brigades with 6 new fire boundaries. The Brigades will be
known as Dale West, Avondale, Dale - Kokeby, Morbinning, North East and Central.
Mia Davies MLA The CEO and I recently met with Mia Davies MLA to discuss an array of topics including Avondale, Rural and Regional Heritage, closure of the morgue, deferment in accessing water from the wastewater reuse project and De-Lisle St industrial land development delays.
DAIP 2013 - 2018 A review of the Shire’s 2007 – 2012 Disability Access and Inclusion Plan is now complete. Thankyou to those community members who provided feedback during this process. Council adopted the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2013 - 2018 at its July monthly meeting.
Personal Development Grants Council will be supporting Mr Noah Leonhardt on the Youth Explorer Voyage by providing $200 and looks forward to an overview of the trip upon his return. As a new initiative Council has now adopted a policy to provide financial support to assist individuals with p e r s o n a l d e v e l o p m e n t o r representation of their chosen interest which meets an application criteria and promotes the Shire of Beverley as a positive, supportive and caring community organisation. Further information is available from the Shire office. Council is also proposing to establish a community grants programme. More information will be provided once this policy is formulated.
Brooking St Standpipe Unfortunately this standpipe was badly damaged when hit by a heavy vehicle, causing it to rupture below the ground, and bending the pipe and support. It’s being repaired, however any information regarding this damage would be gratefully received by the Shire. Council has also been investigating the installation of a swipe card system for the standpipe which is an option that will record who is using the facility as well as the amount of water taken. Many other Shires have already commenced using systems such as this.
Goomalling Visit Council was pleased to recently have the opportunity to host a return visit from Goomalling Councillors and CEO to show them an array of projects in our community, as was the case when Beverley visited Goomalling in 2009.
Local Government Elections – Saturday 19th October 2013 Elector enrolments close on 30th August 2013, this also includes rate payers who do not reside in the Shire however wish to vote in the forthcoming Local Government elections. Candidate nominations will be open from 5/9/2013 to 12/9/2013. Councillors and staff will be on hand at the Beverley Show and look forward to discussing the role of a Shire Councillor with anyone seeking further information. It is an interesting and rewarding way to contribute to your community.

IMPORTANT COMMUNITY INFORMATION
The Shire of Beverley wishes to advise the Beverley Community that the number of Bush Fire Brigades is to be reduced from 9 Brigades to 6 Brigades. The amalgamation of Brigades has come about after meetings with the Fire Control Officers, Shire of Beverley Community Emergency Services Manager and Council. The purpose of the amalgamations is to alleviate the pressures of finding members to take on the roles of FCO’s and reduce the administration requirements of each Brigade. There will be 2 Brigades to the East (called North East Bush Fire Brigade and Morbinning Bush Fire Brigade), 3 to the West (Dale West, Dale and Avondale) and the Central Town Brigade will remain the same. A larger colour map of the new Brigades can be found in the Shire window. If you have any queries please contact Shire of Beverley Community Emergency Services Manager, Justin Corrigan 9646 1200. Class Details: Saturday the 17th August and
Saturday 31st August 2013
9.00am - 2.00pm
Cost: $199 per person includes book, DVD and
your own mannequin.
Vacancies are limited. To book your class please ring Beverley Hospital 96463200
during office hours
Do you know what to do in an emergency? If you have a medical emergency and need an ambulance, you should always ring 000. They will ask you the relevant questions to get the ambulance to you in the quickest time possible. The questions they ask are necessary and assist the ambulance officers to best help you. Do not ring the hospital, or a local ambulance officer you know, for assistance. This will only slow down the process of getting you the help you need.
Remember – Stay calm and ring 000 in an emergency.
Cost of membership From the 1st of July 2013, the cost of ambulance cover rose. These increases are set by SJA Aust. WA Inc, not by your local sub centre. However, the increase is slight and membership is still a much cheaper alternative than the cost of an ambulance transfer should the need arise. Family cover is now $79 per annum. Single cover is now $48 per annum.
Thank you for supporting your local sub centre.
ATTENTION
CAT OWNERS We would like anyone
who needs to get their cats

chipped to contact us.
We need the numbers so a price can be
worked out to help cut the cost.
The new cat laws will be coming into
effect on November 1st so all cats need
to be sterilised and Micro chipped
before then.
The full cost for a female cat that is not
in heat or pregnant is about $250 but
we will hopefully be able to offer
discount on that price. Contact Phyllis 9646 1469

BEVERLEY TREE AND GARDEN CLUB
Members travelled out to the Talbot Brook Native Nursery for this month’s meeting and were treated to a most informative talk from the nursery’s owner on the health and welfare of root systems of native plants and the various plants used for bush tucker. This included inspection of roots of various plants and also taste tests. Plants covered included: Marsh Club Rush, Desert Kurrajong, The Blue Tinsel Lily, The Bush Tomato and Mumtries or the Apple Strudel Plant. Anyone who missed this demonstration can catch up with Lisa and Luke at the Show.
After our meeting and morning tea members purchased any plants they liked and walked around the impressive nursery. A great time was had by all. Thank you Lisa and Luke.

Presidents annual report to the members of the Beverley Men's Shed Incorporated for the year ended 30/6/2013 The year behind us was one where the usual happiness of our members is expressed on each Tuesday morning and also one of sadness with the passing of four of our very valued members, the late Jim Cann, Ken Colpitts, Paul Edwards and Eric Overington, Jim being a quiet man [and from personal experience] was a marvellous innovator and repairer of machinery. Ken was responsible for all the shadow boards, which surround the walls of the new workshop and being a professional panel beater was very involved in the rebuilding of our 1947 Austin truck. Paul was an original member of the shed and was responsible for getting the grant for the indoor bowls equipment and Eric was not only an active committee member, but also our treasurer at the time of his passing. More recently, foundation member Harold Anderson and his wife Margaret retired to Baldivis. Harold who was a foundation member, always had the Shed at heart and
will be greatly missed by the members who made him an honorary member for forthcoming year. We also said goodbye to Richard and Dawn Hogben and Eve and Rhonda Seymour. We wish them good health and happiness for the future. We welcomed 10 new members during the year making our total membership at his time. We ask them to be sympathetic towards the mental capacity of some of our members, but hope they enjoy their company and the facilities the Shed has to offer. Our finances continue to be very well managed by Grant Hobbs who took over the position of treasurer on the passing of Eric. A detailed and audited balance sheet will be available to members as soon as is possible. Community work this last year included a joint exercise with the High School students utilising the facilities of the Beverley District High School. The project involved the making of 20 bird-nesting boxes for placement along the Dale River and was funded by Wheatbelt Natural Resource Management based in Northam.
We have a wonderful resource centre at our school and the Principal, Mr. Norm Ireland is very keen for it to be utilised for community projects such as the one recently completed. During the year we were very pleased to accept the donation of a Gopher in very good condition from painter and decorator Mr Rob Bain. The Shed also funded the purchase of a wheel chair for use by our members if the need arises. I would like to thank, on behalf of the members Fred Symmonds for organising the purchase of the new pool table and the refurbishment of the second table. Both are a well used by a growing number of members - Thank you Fred. Barry and John are attracting growing interest to the computer room. Societies growing need to become computer literate is making their knowledge and this facility a very important aspect of the Men's Shed. Progress continues to be made on our vintage truck by those, mainly of vintage age who are working on it, I have heard it may be finished for the Beverley Show, while at the other end of the Shed [the productive end], the boat is now complete and ready for sale. Neil has completed the manufacture of a gas producer, which is planned to be fitted to the truck. A small building, to house the Austin, is planned to be built on part of the existing concrete pad. The materials for which was donated by Daryl and Lee Storer's son-in-law, Jamie. His generosity is greatly appreciated. As well as entertaining our wives and partners for morning tea in April, we were again all together for a very successful Christmas dinner catered for by John Maxwell from the Hotel Beverley. We also entertained the Hon. Judy Moylan M.L.A. for morning tea on her retirement from the Federal
BEVERLEY MEN’S SHED (INC)

Parliament as our local Member. Judy was accompanied by the candidate endorsed to take her seat in the Federal Parliament, Christian Porter and also by President Dee Ridgway and C.E.O. Steve Gollan. I would like to thank very much our Vice President Ted Sampson and members of the committee for their help throughout the year, especially Grant Hobbs our treasurer and also the members o f the social commit-tee who managed to complete the year without burning any more barbecues. Thank you also to the social committee treasurer Colin Hancock who keeps track of everyone's birthdays, does the monthly lotto and does what Colin does best, on all our social occasions, collects the money. We fully appreciate the fact that Bruce Peck is under no commitment to provide us with morning tea each Tuesday, but when he is away, we certainly miss him. So on behalf of us all, thankyou very much Bruce and this year your excuses for being absent had better improve. We continue to appreciate our relationship with the Shire and thank C.E.O. Steve, President Dee and the Councillors very much for their continued support. Finally gentlemen, how often do we talk to someone who says is too busy to join the Men's Shed. I would ask you all to impart the message that the Beverley Men's Shed is mainly about doing nothing, except to have a cup of tea/coffee and a chat on a Tuesday morning The machinery together with all the facilities the Shed has to offer is available for any member who wishes to make use of it at any time. Thank you all for again having me as your President and I wish you and your family good health and happiness for the coming year.
Welcome to the Beverley Hospital Auxiliary's 69th Annual General Meeting. My first year as President has just flown by and I thank the Committee and Val Moad for their support and hard work. Mrs Pam Aynsley has looked after our finances with her usual dedication and efficiency and Val also had the additional work load of shop coordinator to her secretarial duties. Val and I had great fun shopping for Christmas gifts for the lodge and hospital residents, and a thank-you gift for Avon Trading who store donations all year for us. Thanks also goes to Delys Kilpatrick for making the Anzac Day wreath, it was lovely. Easter Saturday opening was a great success, very busy as it has been in past years. Our new location and the Bali flags purchased last year certainly seem to have worked a treat as we have had a very successful year. Purchases for the hospital and lodge so far this year have been a mobile shower trolley at a cost of $5,075.00, new curtains for the day room $2,890.00, a microwave for the palliative care room and in the pipeline new curtains/drapes and window treatments for aged care rooms and palliative care room with a coat of paint as well. An IV trolley is also on order. We all enjoyed ourselves at the volunteer's afternoon tea with our cuppas, yummy cakes and good company. Luckily we avoided a day with no power and the rain held off even if the breeze was a bit chilly, should have included a glass of sherry to warm us up I think. Our objective is to say a huge thank-you to all our op-shop volunteers, without them we couldn't function and also the generous donation of the residents of Beverley. We are looking forward to The Motor home Club's visit to Beverley in September. They are having a market day on the 29th at the oval and the op shop is supplying clothes for a fashion parade on the day, should be loads of fun so come along and enjoy the show and grab a bargain as well. That concludes my report for 2013. Vicki Glassby

Beverley Historical Society
The July meeting of the Society was attended by eight members. Our field trip to Mt Kokeby was very interesting and a report is on the following page. Two papers were presented to the Society this month. The first was an account of an unusual plane sighting in WW2 by the Volunteer Air Observers. Geoff Edwards’ mother made a report that caused much interest at Perth HQ. The second was a consideration of the business of screening Moving Pictures in Beverley. LP Swan showed b o t h s i l e n t a n d t a l k i n g pictures in Beverley from 1927 to 1932 and the ledger of the financial transactions has been donated to the Dead Finish Museum. Handwritten notes attached to some of the entries provide an insight into this fluctuating business. Versions of these papers will appear in future Blarneys. Thanks to Joyce Ridgway we now have excellent photos of the 1939 train crash at Mt Kokeby, hopefully these may be published too. Donations to the Museum this month included:
“Forever Warriors: This book h o n o u r s a l l W e s t e r n Australian Aboriginal men & women who served their country in both war and peace” by Jan “Kabarli” James, self-published in 2010, Perth, with assistance of the organisat ion “Honouring Indigenous War Graves” & others.
The hand held School Bell from West Dale school (Brookton Hwy near Jones Rd), made of brass with a wooden handle, brass knocker & ring on handle to hang on a hook.
Giveaways from local Beverley shopkeepers including a Roller Blotter with moveable calendar; engraved “With compliments from BILL EYLES, phone 9944, Beverley”

Station Gallery and Platform Theatre News
Station Gallery
Artist-in-Residence
Botanical artist Marta Salamon has returned to Victoria taking with her the most exquisite watercolour of
flowering macrocarpa and bark from our region that she painstakingly executed during her stay. It is always
a delight to have such a positive artist-in-residence who relishes the chance to make meaningful work during
her stay and yet willing to open the gallery and spend time with visitors to further promote our town. One
such visitor, Anne Atkinson, and her family left with us some pages her father had written of his memories
as a young boy living in the railway cottages in the 1920s. An excerpt will be included in August’s Newsletter.
Marta also enjoyed joining the walking group at 7.30am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday as it gave her
the chance to meet new people and take in parts of the town she had not seen before.
Our next artists hail from Perth and will stay for the latter half of August. Eunice Mitussis & Biruta
McLauchlin will be working independently but welcome people to come and draw & paint with them and they
can give advice and answer questions. Even if you don’t wish to actively participate in art, please feel free to
pop in to the Station to make them feel welcome, and see their works exhibited. Opening night to the
exhibition will be on Friday 16th August. Wine and cheese will be served 5.30 – 7.30pm. Entrance cost $7
($5 if BSA member/ Friends of Station). Mark it on the calendar now and look forward to seeing some of
you there.
So there will be no workshops this month, however, during September there will be weekend workshops that
sound really interesting. Anita Stewart from Mississippi, USA is offering classes in the following:
1. (Sept 7th & 8th) The countryside of Beverley is calling you to capture it's alluring landscape gems. You will be walking
away with work you will proud of. Learn the basics while finding unusual compositions. Choose to draw or paint
realistically or delve into abstracting plein air. Bring oil pastel, acrylics, or ink. Your choice if you want to try mixed
media.
2. (Sept 21st & 22nd) Want to learn how to draw or paint your pet from a photo? Anita will have some of her paintings on
hand to give you an idea of how she can help you improve and make your pet's personality come through. Once it hangs on
the wall you will be talking to your painting, it will look so much like them but have that special something only you can
give. Learn from an international artist who has been in national and international competitions. Bring oil, pastel, acrylics
or ink.
3. (Sept 14th & 15th) Come watch Anita from America draw and paint a Beverley model. You will learn how to capture the
personality of your model. Capture their essence while adding your own special touches. Loaded with techniques and
shortcuts. We will work on faces or figures. Your choice. Clothed model. Bring oil, pastel, acrylics or inks.
The dates and classes can be interchanged depending on numbers and preferences so please contact Marylou
with your choice/s of workshops and preferred dates.
On the Saturday morning of each weekend workshop Anita will do a demonstration first followed by the
class. Cost $40/day, tea and coffee supplied, BYO lunch. And if the general public is interested in watching
the demonstrations they are more than welcome.

18 Beverley Blarney, Edition 346 – August 2013 www.beverleywa.com
Hello All,
In this edition I’d like to cover off on some ‘general housekeeping’ about your local station.
NEW OFFICER IN CHARGE
Sergeant Ian Connell is the incoming Officer in Charge of Beverley Police Station. It is anticipated Ian and his wife Jane will be
arriving in Beverley early September.
POLICE RESPONSE
While most people would like to speak with their local officers it is not always possible. We spend most of our time on the road
rather than behind a desk. It is for this reason that your calls to your local station are diverted when we are out and about or off
duty.
When should I call 131 444?
When you want police assistance or attendance and it’s not an emergency.
For example:
• seeking advice
• reporting something which has happened in the past
• reporting a property-related incident for insurance purposes
• reporting a disturbance or breach of the peace (eg, antisocial behaviour or a noisy party) or
• making a complaint against police or another individual
When do I call 000?
Only in an emergency or where urgent police assistance is required.
For example:
• a serious offence is in progress, being witnessed or just committed
• any situation where life or serious injury is threatened
• a motor vehicle accident where people are trapped or seriously injured
• a serious air, rail or water incident
• any incident which poses an immediate threat to cause danger to people or property or
• an explosion or bomb threat
Both Commonwealth and State laws provide serious offences for those who misuse the 000 number and Police will take action
against nuisance callers.
We work closely with York Police. If we are not on duty, York Police generally are and only 20 minutes away, should a police
response be required. On the rare occasion York are unavailable Beverley officers are recalled to duty. So if you need police
please ring, we are only a phone call away, 24 hours a day, and seven days a week.

all very excited and want to share with you the progress that is
being made, the things that are happening and ways that you can

Avondale Yabby Ponds potential for aquaculture
enterprise/research
During the July school holidays Department of Fisheries
Researcher, Craig Lawrence, donated his time to do an initial
clean-up, stock-take and trial commissioning of the yabby ponds
at Avondale. It was very exciting to see much of the
infrastructure is still in working order and Craig is preparing notes
to assist us further develop this project.
State NRM Community grants program
Avondale Farm Project Association has submitted an
application for a grant to assist in re-vamping the walk trail in the
Avondale Reserve, along with directional and interpretive signs.
The application also includes some funds for weed and vermin
control and gate replacement. We should hear if we have been
successful in October 2013.
WA Wildflower Society visiting Avondale Reserve
13-15 September
Just a reminder that interested community members and friends of
Avondale Reserve are invited to join the WA
Wildflower Society members and volunteers, either during their
surveying, or at their evening sessions where they
discuss the day’s finds. Contact Dina 9646 1004 for more
information.
Museum busybee
It is lovely to see the museum become a hive of activity each
month with lots of progress being made on the re-assembling of
the Grey Ferguson. It is hoped this will soon form part of the
moving display at our next open day. There has also been
progress with the pre-heater for the Lanz. The Massey 44K water
pump repairs are now complete. Thanks to Dave
Shopland. All museum volunteers are welcome to join us on the
3rd Saturday of each month from 8am. Next date will be Saturday
17 August. If you would like to join this enthusiastic bunch of
volunteers contact Dina on 9646 1004.
Avondale Appeal
The Avondale Appeal has now been set up. Donations of $2 or
more towards the Avondale Appeal are tax deductable. A
National Trust receipt will be issued. If you wish to make a

Stomp for the Stables
Planning is well under way for this family based community event
to be held on Sunday 20 October. Walk or run from Beverley to
Avondale (approx 6km) to raise awareness of the unique
Avondale Stables complex. Share a community BBQ in the
Avondale Picnic area and help raise funds to conserve the stables.
More information Dina 9646 1004.
Fork Lift Training at Avondale
Our first forklift training session at Avondale is fully subscribed.
A second course is available 27 and 28 August. For more
information please contact Amanda at CY O’Connor 9622 6743.
Interpretation of Cultural Heritage
Avondale Farm Project Association has submitted an
application to Lotterywest for a grant to develop an
appropriate interpretation plan for the Avondale Machinery
Museum. We aim to convert the display into a regional
museum focussing on the story of Avondale through siting of the
exhibits, audio visual, interactive, education and public programs
and publications (including web).
It is about a four month assessment period so we hope to know the
outcome of our application by end of November.
General Avondale Repairs and Maintenance
Thank you to the Max Employment team, in particular the
supervisor Kelvin Quartermaine, for their continued
commitment to keeping Avondale presentable to the public, and
contributing to the tidy up of the property. Many years of
accumulated rubbish is finally being sorted through and
recycled where possible.
The small John Deere tractor with pallet forks has enjoyed a long
overdue service and repairs. It is looking very clean! Thanks to
Nooky Ridgway for picking it up from Northam for us.
Additional scheme water holding tanks and replacing stock head
tanks with larger ones, and the associated preparation and
plumbing is now complete. This will be a vast improvement of
water supply around the farm, particularly in the summer months.
Holden Ute
We have had an offer from Department of Corrective Services,
Wooroloo for their workshops to complete the mechanical repairs
and small amount of panel work on our 1954 FX
Holden ute. This ute was donated to the Avondale collection by
Rob Williamson in the 1970’s and is an important item in the
collection. It will be wonderful to see it in action at our special
days in the future.
Clydesdales
Robbie and Comet are getting lots of attention at the moment from
Marian Byrne, Steve Barwick and Mitch Kerr. They are
responding well to the work. It will be wonderful to see Comet at
the Beverley Agricultural Show. Thank you for the commitment
from our Clydesdale volunteers.
Beverley Agricultural Show
Avondale Farm Project Association will be joining other
exhibitors at this year’s Beverley Agricultural Show with
information about our Avondale Appeal and the Stomp for the
Stables. The display will include vintage machinery from the
museum collection and a Clydesdale horse. Volunteers will be on
hand to answer any community enquiries about future plans for
Avondale. So drop by and see us.

AVONDALE FARM, BEVERLEY
CROPPING AND GRAZING OPPORTUNITY FROM 2014
The historically important property known as Avondale Farm is a place where the community comes to learn about and
experience agriculture and history in Western Australia. It is also a venue for special community events.
The National Trust of Australia (WA) will be seeking expressions of interest from suitably experienced operators to take on a
three year, plus optional three year, cropping and grazing lease (by joint agreement) of agricultural lands (approximately
450Ha arable) at Avondale Farm, Beverley from March 2014.
All proposals will need to be sympathetic to the educational, tourism, cultural and heritage values of the property, and
complimentary to related activities and events conducted on the property.
A public information session for those interested will be held at Avondale Farm in
mid-September to provide further details of this unique opportunity. National Trust representatives, members of the Farm
Management Group and Avondale Farm Project Association volunteers will be on site to discuss their vision of Avondale,
working in partnership with interested parties.
Initial indications of interest would be appreciated by COB Friday 13th September by email, fax, phone or post from which an
invitation will be provided to attend the information day. Contact details below.

Feasibility Study CCS Strategic has commenced researching the needs of the community in regards to developing plans for the Community Resource Centre’s future. I have been asked if this means that we are closing, no we are not. We are planning to further develop our services and products on offer to the community. The survey that was sent out was to gauge your opinion of the centre and what you would like from us in the future. If you haven’t returned your survey then please do so ASAP. What trying weather we are having this
winter. It has been good to see a little
rain over the past two weeks but the
horrendous frosts have taken their toll
on gardens and pastures. We hope that
follow-up rains will see crops, pastures

weeks. There is still hope for good
crops yet.

T his is a beautiful time of year to travel through the Avon
Valley and many are braving the cold to do so.
We continue to welcome many visitors to our town from
near and far. Sometimes, very far! Until I became a
volunteer at our visitor centre, I was personally unaware of
just how many tourists visit our small town. I have found it
really enjoyable to meet and greet these visitors. Some are
real characters and have interesting stories to tell of their
travels. Most speak highly of our area and seem to enjoy the
country hospitality.
We are trying to build up our souvenir range with locally
made products so these visitors, if they wish, can take
something of Beverley away with them. We now stock
local honey, hand towel sets, leather goods, jewellery, cards,
books by local authors, as well as Beverley mugs, stubby
holders, caps, tea towels, t-shirts, polo shirts and more. But
they’re not just for visitors. These also make great gifts to
send to family and friends who are interstate or overseas, so
please feel welcome to come in and take a look at what we
have to offer. You might be surprised.
We also sell a lovely range of Beverley postcards which are
a nice way to stay in touch with distant friends and family.
Just a reminder that the CMCA, Campervan Motorhome
Club of Australia, are holding their West Coast Rally in
Beverley from 26th to 30th of September. Our town will be a
buzz with visitors at that time so let’s all make them
welcome. This is an opportunity for Beverley to shine.
Again, we need more volunteers to join us in keeping the
Visitor Centre doors open and welcoming visitors to
Beverley. If you enjoy meeting people and could spare a few
hours, we would love to hear from you. Just pop-in to the
Tourist Bureau and introduce yourself to one of our
volunteers. You will be welcome.
Reminder that annual membership is due, benefits include
advertising on the www.beverleywa.com website.
Till next time, keep warm, take care and enjoy the Beverley

AGED CARE
Late Line ABC - 15 July 2013 Some disturbing news of current research shows the systematic bullying, malnourished, neglect and ill treatment of our most vulnerable and feeble in our affluent society (our elderly). The stories are numerous and too distressing to mention here. The facts revealed: there are 220,000 aged care
residents. problems with accreditation
processes. agencies with a shortage of staff
and training for new staff. the need for more spot checks,
by regulators (Commonwealth Government).
need more doctors and support services to services the current 3,000 aged care facilities.
There is a crisis in the aged care facilities which is recognised by the industry - as stated on TV. The new Aged Care Minister goes on to say, she agrees and will monitor the aged care complaints and needs such as more investment. She states 1,000 people twin share earn $65 each week and they will get more support to stay in their own homes and to increase the quality of their lives. Mal G Roberts

(significant for indigenous people)
One elder on ABC’s Q & A, stated that
she had visited, some, indigenous
schools, detention centres and prison’s.
She made a shocking discovery that
some individuals feel safer in prison.
Some talk was made that political

FIREWORKS
DISPLAY
SHOWDAY
We would like to advise the Beverley
community that following the annual
show day there will be the fireworks
display. The fireworks display will take
place between 6.30pm - 6.45pm. Our
experience is that often pets, dogs in
particular, can become frightened by
fireworks and behave in an out of
character manner.
As such, we have put together the
following tips for dog owners to assist
your animals’ well-being and safety
during this time:
Ensure your dog is securely contained for
the 15 - 20 minute fireworks display.
If you are leaving your dog at home alone
outside, check that all fences are secured and well maintained.
If you are leaving your dog at home alone
inside, a laundry room or similar enclosed
space can provide a familiar, safe and
secure environment.
If you are going out for the evening, you
might consider taking your dog to a
family member or friend’s home to be cared for, or even have someone come
and keep your dog company.
Please Note:
PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THE
OVAL AT THIS EVENT

ACT – BELONG – COMMIT SHOW DAY NEWS
It’s that time of year again and the Ag Soc committee (as we fondly refer to ourselves) are once again pulling all the strings together to bring the Show to life on the Showgrounds for 2013. As you have read on the front cover our theme is celebrating LIVING IN THE COUNTRY. Part of our lifestyle here, living in the country, is the generosity we all experience from our neighbours and friends in time of need. In the spirit of that lifestyle we decided it was time to give back a little more this year than ever before. So here is what we are offering… FREE: All children under 13yrs when accompanied by an adult have FREE entry. FREE ENTERTAINMENT with Circus Challenge, Syd and Kym Outback show, Urban Crew workshops and performance, Vince Haines the magician, sumo suits, gladiator dual, bungee run, mechanical bull, Beverley District High School Choir, Coastal Pipe Band AND fireworks at night followed by dancing the night away with the rock band Almost Famous. We are also very happy to announce the return of an old favourite with the Horses versus Humans competition back in full swing followed by rival factions lining up with East facing West on opposite sides of the Kilpatrick rope. Who will take the title for 2013? Plus we have all the usual show day rides, animals, foods, music, magic and general all round frivolity. Entries are starting to come in and everyone has their eyes on the prize of an ipad mini which one lucky person will win just by entering in one (or more) of the exhibition shed competitions. Membership tickets are being posted out as this edition of the blarney goes to press and trophies can be delivered to the newsagency. Schedules are available from local businesses or check out our web site www.beverleyagsociety.com . It’s going to be another big day this year, we hope you enjoy it.

Daytime running lights
The practice of motorists switching on their driving lights during daytime hours is often referred to as Daytime Running Lights or DRL. As a road safety concept, it is based upon the sound scientific fact of being seen is being safe. It’s not rocket science that in low light conditions such as early mornings, af-ternoons, overcast, rain and in foggy conditions that a vehicle having its headlights on low beam is far easier to see than a vehicle without its lights on at all. Recently in the Wheatbelt we have been experiencing the shortest days of the year combined with foggy and overcast conditions. For your safety and the safety of other road users we suggest you check your vehicle lights are working and drive with your headlights on low beam. ‘Rocket Science’ research has found that;
When objects occur outside our direct line of sight or in the peripheral areas of vision, much stronger contrasts are required if detection is to occur. When detection relies upon peripheral vision, there is a greater need for high colour and/or a brighter contrast to allow prompt detection.
Where the contrast between vehicle colour and background colour is strongest, detection is quickest.
Best detection results can be achieved for all vehicles if low beam headlights are on.
This is important because it is generally accepted that a large proportion of vehicular crashes could have been avoided if early detection had been possible.
Laboratory-based studies have shown that the greater the brightness contrasts between an object and its background, the greater the probability of the object being detected. The lower the ambient illumination, the greater the contrast ratio required between object and background.
So was that rocket science or just common sense? You be the judge and do your bit to be safe on the roads, Lights On. Slow down and drive to the road and environmental conditions. More information Contact the Regional Road Safety Officer Tony Smith on 9881 5100

WITCH’S KANGAROO RESCUE AND WILDLIFE CARE
What a surprise I got when I received a phone call from a lady out at the Dale saying she had found a baby possum. After we had arranged to meet, she considered that it wasn’t as young as she had first suspected after she became quite active. Once I had opened the bag I identified her as an adult female Western Pygmy Possum that had fallen out of a tree. These possums go into torpor when it gets too cold so they don’t need to find food when it is hard to find (bats do this also). It is like a hibernation but for a much shorter time. This very lucky possum would have not been able to go back up the tree because she was in torpor and she would have been vulnerable to predators and exposure. Once she was warm she was released back where she was found and gladly scampered up the tree and vanished. Most people never get to see these beautiful little possums because they are smaller than a mouse, with an average adult weight of 15 grams. This was so exciting for me and the family who found her. On a sadder note I helped a friend with a sick kangaroo last week and was so shocked to be told by the vet that it was indeed Tetanus, basically there is no cure for this awful disease and it is an awful death, so sadly this little kangaroo was euthanized by the vet. I did a lot of research and found that Tetanus is on the rise in Kangaroos and other wildlife and I will be going back to routinely vaccinating my kangaroos for Tetanus. I previously used to until I became scared of the side effects of the vaccine, which according to my vet is very rare and is more treatable than the disease. This will give them protection for about 5 years after they are released. Our hand raised brush tailed possum Hush, has been successfully released into the wild with Dottie doing this slowly over several nights. He still comes in and eats food but as this is getting less all the time, it seems like he is now able to find food in the wild. This is what is called a soft release where slowly they rely on us less and cope much better in the wild. Hopefully Hush will go on to live a happy and long life. For any wildlife queries please contact Phyllis phone 9646 1469 or mobile 0437 483 175

Rural stoicism is poor for survival Rural Australians are often too stoical, macho or optimistic to seek medical help, leading to poorer cancer survival rates, finds the WA study recently published in the Family Practice Journal. Detailed interviews with cancer patients from regional WA found that stoicism meant severe and continuous symptoms were often self-managed. This included putting up with severe and long-term symptoms and rearranging lifestyle to accommodate these symptoms instead of seeking help. Lead researcher from University of Western Australia, Professor Jon Emery says they were amazed at the things country people would put up with compared to people in the city. “It’s a real worry” says Professor Emery. “The rural stoic male is celebrated as an Australian icon, but wanting to be perceived as tough or macho can have major consequences on their health.” The same study is what led to the creation of the Find Cancer Early campaign currently being piloted in the Wheatbelt until November 2013. “Find Cancer Early is here not only to tell people what symptoms to look out for, but also to help people get passed some of those attitudes which stop them going to the doctor when something isn’t quite right” says Find Cancer Early Project Officer, Karen Hansen. If you are over 40 and have coughed up blood or had blood in your pee once off tell your doctor. You should also tell your doctor if you have had any of these symptoms for more than 4 weeks: blood in your poo; problems peeing; looser poo (diarrhoea); unexplained weight loss; an unusual pain, lump or swelling anywhere in your body; becoming more short of breath; or a persistent cough. Having these symptoms doesn’t mean you have cancer – often they turn out to be something less serious, but it’s important to tell your doctor. More information is available at: www.findcancerearly.com.au. Find Cancer Early is an initiative of The University of Western Australia and Cancer Council WA investigating ways to improve cancer outcomes for people in regional Western Australia. BEVERLEY REDBACKS HOCKEY August already, the season is nearly over! Firstly and most importantly it is time recognise our
Coach…..We would like to acknowledge and thank Chris Mann for her enthusiasm, guidance, encouragement and dedication to our team and the game. Chris has taken on board our move into A grade this season and is working us hard at trainings. This is certainly showing on game days with some fantastic hockey being played and a competitive team taking the field each and every week. Chris is at games, runs trainings, puts on team dinners, throws in an extra training when needed and more!
THANK YOU Chris Mann ~ from the team! We must also make special mention of our reliable umpires. Judy Davies and Karen Poultney, thank you for taking the time to come along to our games & umpire. Super job! As this goes to print the girls are talking about the Revue night… ‘What should I wear?’, ‘How should I do my hair?’. We have been involved with the Netball girls in pre-filming an act to the song Call Me Maybe. You may see it on YouTube soon. Stay tuned for photos from the red carpet.
Round 9 Vs Jenna 29 June Pink, Phuket and Weddings were in the air which left us looking for fill-ins. Thanks to Ros Mellick and Kira Strange who came on board for the day and both played extremely well. The day was piping hot and playing a strong team who know their stuff put our skills to the test. With 10 minutes left in the first half Jenna got a goal off a short corner. They got another goal in the second half, this one snuck in before we had time to blink. Once again we gave it everything we had in warm conditions. Beverley Junior Netball Club During the July school holiday break, the West Coast Fever held Netball Clinic’s in regional and rural areas for children aged 5 - 12 years old. Two representatives from the Junior Netball Club took the opportunity to train and learn skills from the state team representatives. Kana Moulton and Rebecca Grover worked in groups with Caitlin Bassett, Catherine Cox, Kate Beveridge, Verity Simmons, Chanel Gomes and Andrea Gilmore. The girls learned some new training drills, shooting techniques and basic skills to improve their game. Both girls will be teaching other team members some of their new gain knowledge, which we are sure will benefit all the club. After the morning clinic the girls had the chance to get autographs and photo’s with the team. It is great to see the dedication both girls have towards netball and their enthusiasm to attend next years' clinic. Keep informed of games, memberships and clinic by visiting http://www.westcoastfever.com.au/
