The time of the year has arrived once again for the Malaysia/Singapore Bench & Bar Games. Last year we enjoyed the warm hospitality of our Malaysian hosts on the magical island of Langkawi and this year, we will do all that we can to reciprocate. Members of the legal professions of both jurisdictions have the opportunity to do sporting battle in a spirit of friendship and goodwill. The Games serve to strengthen the friendships built up over the years with our Malaysian friends. It is a tradition of friendship and camaraderie that we must continue.
I would like to give special thanks to everyone who worked hard to make this year’s Games a memorable one. Their efforts are most appreciated. Lastly, I wish all participants the best in their respective games and that

they have an enjoyable and memorable time on and off the sports fi eld. I ask all participants to remember one thing, and it is the thing that really matters: the participation and not the winning.

The 2007 Bench & Bar Games will once again be held in Singapore. As always, it will draw strong support from the members of the legal fraternity of the two neighbouring countries. Unfortunately, the Honourable Chief Justice of Malaysia could not be with us due to his other commitment.
Over the years the Games have contributed greatly towards fostering a closer relation between members of Judiciary and the legal profession of the two countries. I am sure this year’s Games will achieve the same objective. As in the past, all the events will be keenly contested. But whatever may be the results, let us not lose sight of the main objective of the Games. Finally, on behalf of
the Malaysian delegation I would like to extend our gratitude to our host for organising this year’s Games. I wish the Games every success.
To all participants and supporters, enjoy the Games.
Dato’ Arifi n bin ZakariaFederal Court Judge For and on behalf of
Tun Dato’ Sri Ahmad Fairuz bin Dato’ Sheikh Abdul Halim The Chief Justice Malaysia

A very warm welcome to our Malaysian counterparts
who come to Singapore for this year’s Malaysia/Singapore Bench & Bar Games. This year, we play host for the annual sporting event. I hope that every participant and their family members who have travelled across the causeway will enjoy this opportunity to get together with friends old and new. Indeed, what better way to promote camaraderie between our two nations than sport played in a competitive yet friendly and fair atmosphere. While one needs mental strength and fervor in the Courts of Law, one requires at the Games, in addition to these qualities, a strong team spirit. We look forward to the contest of mind, body and spirit.
Message from the President of The Law Society of Singapore

I would like to thank the Sports Committees of both Bar Associations and Bench & Bar of Malaysia and Singapore. The success of the Bench & Bar Games would not be possible without their hard work and commitment.
Philip Jeyaretnam, SC

Some say that lawyers and judges are a dreary lot. But to see everyone gathered together year after year, fi lled with enthusiasm at the prospect of the Games ahead, there is no doubt that we do actually love our fun and competition. Who could forget which team won last year’s hockey match? Or who was left behind in the boat race? These are subjects which fuel the talk of the Singapore and Malaysian Bar for months after each annual Games.
And here we are, gathered together again. To set new records perhaps, and for some, to redeem ourselves of last year’s defeat. For a long time now, both the Singapore and Malaysian Bar and Bench have enjoyed close ties and great camaraderie forged during these annual Games. Both sides have displayed great sportsmanship, and have always maintained the spirit of good, healthy competitiveness.
On that note, I would like to thank all those who have worked tirelessly in the background to ensure the success of these Games. In particular, I wish to thank Mr George Varughese who heads our Sports Committee and his Singapore counterpart, Mr Joseph Liow for putting together, what promises to be a carefully thought out and well-organised event.
But as we plunge enthusiastically into good hearted competition, we should stop and spare a thought for our fellow lawyers in the Solomon Islands who require urgent aid due to the devastating tsunami there. I make this appeal again on their behalf to both our legal fraternities and trust that we will remember them in a meaningful way.
And may I leave you with these words with no anticipation whatsoever of the outcome of these Games: ‘Winning isn’t always fi nishing fi rst. Sometimes, winning is just fi nishing.’ - Manuel Diotte

Message from the President of Bar Council Malaysia

It remains an honour and pleasure to be part of a tradition that harks back to 1969; when the Bench & Bar Games was held for the very fi rst time in Kuala Lumpur. Whilst the landscape of both countries has changed in the past 38 years, I dare say that the spirit of the Games has not.
I was introduced to the Bench & Bar Games as a young pupil in 1992 when the Games took place in Ipoh. My pupil master, Mr Derrick Wong, insisted that this was part of my training as a pupil. His partner, N. Sreenivasan (who is my partner now) insisted that I should accompany his friend, Mr Fakhuddin Savliwala, who wanted to drive up instead of fl ying. What my bosses didn’t tell me was that Mr Savliwala enjoyed the high speeds that his Ford XR3i could produce. To keep a long story short, let’s just say we made it up to KL in just over two hours before we rested for the night. The trip to Ipoh was similarly eventful and etched in my memory. I had a great time with Savliwala and many others in Ipoh that year.
Last year I had the pleasure of meeting the acquaintance of Mr Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera who was the Chairman of the Kedah/Perlis Bar. In his message in the souvenir magazine, he recounted his days at the National University of Singapore and of the friendships forged. When he spoke to me, he enquired of his many friends that were unfortunately not able to make it to Langkawi for the Games. I was struck by the depth of the bond that he had for his friends despite the fact that they had not met in years. It was something that struck a chord with me. I recount these two personal experiences because it reminds me why the Bench & Bar Games is an important tradition. Firstly, the Games provide us with the avenue of forming new friendships that we would not otherwise have. Secondly, it is an opportunity to meet up with old friends and to re-establish the bond shared. Our President Philip Jeyaretnam, SC was insightful when he said, in his speech at the Bench & Bar Games in 2005, that ‘one should never under-estimate the power of sports in promoting peace and better understanding between peoples’. These Games would
Message from Chairman Sports Committee, The Law Society of Singapore
not be possible without the generous fi nancial support of many law fi rms and individuals. Whilst many of our members support the Games, few realise the fi nancial costs associated with it. The Games could not have survived all these years without these generous donors and well wishers. I have been touched by the outpouring of generous support from these donors and friends and I sincerely thank all of them for their contributions.
I also wish to record my thanks to all my members of the Sports Committee for their time, effort and contribution. I take this opportunity to especially mention my thanks to Mr K Bala Chandran for his continued support. Bala, to my knowledge, is the longest serving member of the Law Society’s Sports Committee and a wealth of invaluable experience.
Lastly, the Sports Committee and I bid all of you an enjoyable Bench & Bar Games.
Joseph Liow

T he time has come again to renew fellowship and camaraderie with our fellow members of the Bench and Bar from across the causeway in gentlemanly competition in the Annual Bench & Bar Games.
The Malaysian team has been training very hard the last few months in preparation for these Games and confi dent of victory, the Challenge Trophy was delivered to Singapore, marked ‘return to sender’!
For this competitive spirit, I must thank all the Convenors for a great job done in preparing their respective teams. Despite the ‘rivalry’ between the teams I am sure sportsmanship will prevail in all the games and the best team shall win.
I hope in the coming years, more young practitioners would play a greater role both in participating and in organising these Games. As for the aging sporting ‘stars’, these Games will continue to be a great opportunity to catch up with old friends on an annual basis.
As in previous years I am certain the Malaysian team will enjoy the warm hospitality of the Singapore Law Society over the course of the Games. On behalf of the Sports Committee, I wish to thank Mr Joseph Liow and his team for a well organised Bench & Bar Games.
And Let the Games Begin ...
George Varughese
