Bamboo Treatment Plant Details:

Treatment method, Solution Preparation and proportion:

- Preparation of raw bamboo; cut into size of 6.0 meter, cleaning of nods,

incision and then holing.

- Laying of 300-400 bamboo poles in each tank (there are 6 tanks/ plant)and

keep sufficient load over it.

- Immersing of bamboo poles by 10% chemical solution of Boric & Borax (with

a ratio of 1:1).

- After 10-12 days take out the bamboo poles from the tank and dry in shaded

place for 3-5 days.

-

Soaking Method:

Then it will be ready for use

Soaking in to preservative solution for 10-15 days

Pick the bamboo poles from the tank and keep rest for the time being

Stack in shaded place (3-5 days for diffusion)

Process being followed:

Raw Bamboo collection

Cleaning and incision of bamboo culms

Holing throughout the bamboo culms

Chemical (Boric & Borax) solution preparation

Bamboo poles laying into tank

Take out and keeping 3-5 days for diffusion

Preservative Chemicals:

Boric acid (H3Bo4) and Borax (Na2[B4O5(OH)4].8H2O)in

commercial grade is being used for bamboo treatment

Borax-Boric acid (BB) is a non-fixed type preservative.

This kind of preservatives are used only in indoor

conditions.

BB Compound is prepared by combining Boric Acid and

Borax at a ratio of 1:1.

Solution is being prepared with concentration of 10% (by

weight)

Properly treated with 10% BB solution, the treated bamboo may last 10-15 years in indoor use.

Durability:

Quality Check

Penetration of preservative chemicals are ensured by color test.

Retention (dry-salt retention) is measured from the differences of

before and after weight of poles.

Work Plan

Effect on Environment:

• In BB treated materials, when they are dried, the preservation

chemicals are fixed into the Bamboo culm. There is no scope to

leach out and no risk to pollute the surrounding areas when the

treated materials are used in indoor area.

• At the end of the operation rest of the residuals will be dumped in

selected places carefully.

Challenges:

➢ Limited Capacity: Getting huge quantity of quality bamboo is a big

challenge

➢ If the treated bamboo is in contact with earth surface then there is every

possibility of damages.

Successes:

✓ More than 1,40,000 bamboo poles have been treated out of which

1,05,000 poles (i.e. 73%) have been used.

✓ SARI Isolation & Treatment Center has been made of treated bamboo

where more than 3000 treated bamboo were used

✓ About 70,000 treated bamboo used by BRAC for making improve shelter

and Isolation center while

✓ 35,000 (24%) treated bamboo support provided to other nine organizations

for building same nature of infrastructure (Organizations are; CARITAS, DRC,

INFINITY, SMEP, Save the Children, Food for the Hungry, SHED, SARPV,

UNICEF).
