According to the principles of Ayurveda, Nadi Pariksha (pulse examination) is one of the important methods used to treat any ailments identified by the causative dosha. Presently, the practitioner uses his 3 fingers to check patient’s pulse and to identify the predominant dosha. This may lead to misdiagnosis owing to the possibility of human error. To overcome this error, the researchers at the University of Pune developed the pulse analysis device to make accurate diagnosis possible. The device consists of sensor module, signal conditioning module, data acquisition, and analysis module and display. It also consists of piezoelectric sensors used to sense the pulse pressure. These sensors are wrapped around the wrist of the patient, just as the practitioner uses his 3 fingers, to apply pressure on the radial artery. The pulse signals obtained from these sensors are processed through signal processing circuitry. This system has been submitted to the Department of AYUSH for approval. Since thousands of years, the ayurvedic system of medicine has been using the pulse as a form of diagnosis. The invention of the electronic pulse diagnosis tool will provide a technology support to this age-old practice and also encourage more ayurvedic practitioners to use this diagnostic tool in clinical practice. World Environment Day Celebration in Bangalore

The Himalaya Drug Company conducted an

awareness campaign and a training program on

herb plantation at the Atreya Ayurvedic Medical

College (Doddaballapur, Bangalore, Karnataka)

on the occasion of World Environment Day

(WED; June 5, 2012). The event started with

a brief session on creating awareness on WED,

followed by an interactive quiz. Dr Eshwar

Bhat, the Dean, planted the first herb sapling

followed by Dr Raghunath, the Principal, the

remaining faculty members, and students.

The students showed a lot of enthusiasm and

interest toward this activity. More than 80

students and 12 teaching faculties took part in

this program.

World Environment Day

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5th of June every year to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action. WED, run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), was for the first time observed in 1973.

WED is similar to Earth Day and is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme. This year, Brazil hosted WED with the theme “Green Economy: Does it include you?” Some of the themes of previous years include “Forests – Nature At Your Service (2011),” “Many Species. One Planet. One Future (2010),” “Your Planet Needs You – UNite to Combat Climate Change (2009), “CO2, Kick the Habit! (2008),” and “Melting Ice – a Hot Topic (2007).”

ShatavariLatinname:Asparagus racemosus

Englishname: Asparagus

Asparagus racemosus is an undershrub that grows to a height of approximately 3 m. In traditional systems of medicine, the fresh juice of the root along with honey is given as a demulcent in conditions such as bilious dyspepsia or diarrhea. In an experimental study, it was observed that the rhizome extracts of A racemosus produced an estrogenic effect on mammary glands and genital organs of pregnant rats. An alcoholic extract of the rhizome was administered orally to adult pregnant female albino rats at a dose of 30 mg/100 g body weight, daily for 15 days. The study findings revealed a prominence of the mammary glands, a dilated vaginal opening, and a transversely situated uterine horn in the treated group of rats. The weight of the uterine horns of the treated group was found to be significantly higher (P < .001), but its length was found to be shorter (P > .01).1

The extracts of A racemosus posses a variety of biological properties such as being antiulcer, anticancer, antioxytocic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antidiabetic, antiallergic, and cardioprotective agents.

Ashvagandha Latinname: Withania somnifera

Englishname: Winter cherry

Withania somnifera is an erect, evergreen, tomentose shrub with fleshy and stout roots. It grows abundantly in the subtropical regions of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and parts of Northern Africa. Root extracts exhibit nervine tonic, aphrodisiac, and sedative properties. In traditional systems of medicine, W somnifera was not only used as an aphrodisiac and geriatric tonic, but was also used in treating rheumatism and general weakness.

In an experimental study, it was observed that treatment of stress using the extract of W somnifera for 30 days significantly reversed the stress-induced NADPH-d activation. The study findings suggested that the extract of W somnifera inhibited NADPH-d through the suppression of corticosterone release and activation of choline acetyltransferase, which in turn increased serotonin level in hippocampus to inhibit NADPH-d. These observations suggested that root extracts of W somnifera could be potentially used as a preventive or therapeutic drug for stress-induced neurological disorders.1

RoleofHiOwna-Jr.inGeneralHealthandCognitioninChildrenWorldwide, micronutrient deficiencies affect the health and development of many children, including their physical and mental developments. They also lead to an increased susceptibility to infections.

An open clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of HiOwna-Jr. in maintaining general growth, health, and cognition in 50 children aged between 2 and 10 years. Subsequently, all children underwent a simple physical and systemic examination. The children within the age group of 2 to 6 years were instructed to take 12.5 g of the health drink, while those within the age group of 7 to 10 years were instructed to take 25 g of the health drink along with milk orally, twice daily, for a period of 2 months. All the children were monitored at monthly intervals of 2 months.

Results of the clinical trial showed that HiOwna-Jr. improves height, weight, and body mass index (BMI), as well as general health of children by reducing the frequency of respiratory illness and by improving appetite in children aged between 2 and 10 years. Cognition parameters such as attention, memory, and concentration in children aged between 5 and 10 years also showed beneficial results. No adverse effects or withdrawal from the trial were reported or observed throughout the study period. The overall compliance to the study was good.

reGood nutrition is

of utmost importance to achieve optimal health

and well-being. A well-balanced diet providing the appropriate amount of calories from proteins, carbohydrates, and fat, and including the recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals would be ideal.

NutritionalRequirementsDuringChildhoodProteinsEach gram of protein provides 4 kcal of energy. Cereals like rice, wheat, ragi, jowar, millets, and maize are sources of protein. Pulses are rich in protein. Egg albumin is a good source of complete protein. The recommended allowance of protein is 17 to 20 g for children aged 1 to 3 years and 20 to 22 g for children aged 3 to 6 years.

CarbohydratesEach gram of carbohydrate provides 4 kcal of energy. Cereals like rice and wheat, fruits, and some vegetables like potato are a few sources of carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates present in sugary foods or drinks provide instant energy, whereas complex carbohydrates are stored in the body and harnessed for energy when required.

FatsEach gram of fat provides 9 kcal of energy. Essential fatty acids are important for growth and development of the brain and retina. Fats are present in various food grains, oil, and dairy products.

VitaminsandMineralsVitamins are obtained by the body through various foods like vegetables, fruits, and grains. Minerals like iron, iodine, and various others are essential for the normal functioning of enzyme systems at various levels.

Insufficient intake of nutrients leads to undernutrition and various conditions like

rickets, scurvy, anemia that can reduce immunity, making children susceptible to cold, cough, and fever.

NutritionScenarioinIndiaNutritional deficiencies in Indian children manifest right from the time of birth, and nutritional problems such as stunted growth and wasting rise rapidly in the first 2 years of life, which is the most critical period in the growth and development of children. According to the 3 measures of nutritional status (stunting, wasting, and underweight), lack of proper nutrition is a particularly serious problem in rural areas of India with almost half of the young children having stunted growth, another half being underweight, and 1 out of every 5 children wasted. Even in the urban areas, undernutrition is very widespread as almost 40% of young children are stunted, one-third of them are underweight, and 17% are wasted.

HiOwna-Jr.forBalancedNutritionHiOwna-Jr. a polyingredient formulation, promotes general health and well-being of children and supports optimum growth and development of children aged between 2 and 10 years. HiOwna-Jr. is fortified with pea protein and whey protein concentrates, skimmed milk powder, vitamins, and minerals that provide essential nutrition to growing children. In addition to these, its unique ingredients are designed to provide immunity enhancing activity and learning ability improving activity. Balanced dietary intake of nutrients with adherence to their recommended daily allowances serves as the key to overcome deficiencies and maintain good health.

RegulatorymedicalwritingIt includes documentation of clinical study protocols and reports, informed consent forms, investigator brochures, and summary documents that summarize and discuss the data collected while developing the drug or device. These documents are required by the regulatory agencies for the approval of the medical product.

EducationalmedicalwritingThis includes the process of developing documents related to drugs, devices, and biologics for specific readers such as health-care professionals. These documents contain information on drugs and devices, data for presentation at medical conferences, medical articles for journal publication, and materials for continuing education and continuing medical education.

Scientific writing also constitutes a part of medical writing that involves the documentation of research findings for journal publication.

ScopeofMedicalWritingWell written, standards-compliant documents are important for easy and quick

understanding of the product during the approval and marketing stages. An increase in the market size of health-care products has resulted in an increase in the demand for information related to these products among the consumers, patients, and health-care professionals.

RoleofaMedicalWriterinDifferentOrganizationsMedical writers in contract research organizations (CROs) and pharmaceutical companies prepare documents for regulatory submissions and publications. Besides this, those working in pharmaceutical companies also prepare training manuals and promotional materials for marketing purposes and Web sites, whereas medical writers in communication agencies prepare manuscripts for publication and materials such as poster, abstracts, and slide presentations for conferences, pharmaceutical marketing, training, and multimedia.

Whatiscalorie?Howarecaloriecountscomputed?Calorie is a unit measure of stored energy in food. First defined in France, in the early 1800s, calorie is the amount of heat (energy) required to raise the temperature of 1000 g (a liter) of water by 1°C. It is measured by using a “bomb calorimeter,” a small chamber in which food is burnt to heat water; the hotter the water, the higher the calorie count.

Howmanycaloriesshouldanaveragepersonconsumeeachdaytomaintainahealthyweight?Factors such as age, size, muscle mass, body fat, activity level, and genetic factors affect the rate at which the body burns calories. The chart presented below gives a rough idea of the daily caloric needs of 2 average 50-year-old persons, based on how active they are. For people aged above 65 years, the number would be less than 10%, whereas for young people it would be more than 10%.

Whatisbetterforweightloss,alow-carbohydratedietoralow-fatdiet?Studies have found that low-carbohydrate and low-fat

diets produce pretty similar results over a year or two,

but none of them work wonders. Most of the weight

that has been lost during the first few months of the

weight-loss diet tends to be regained over a course of

time. Clearly, different diets work better for different

individuals. Some people tend to lose more weight by

cutting back on carbohydrates, while others tend to lose weight by cutting back on fat and by consuming a large amount of lean protein. In addition, exercise helps prevent the lost pounds from being regained.
