BOCA RATON NEWS Vol. 14, No. 66 Sunday, May 4, 1969 22 Pages Beach case hit by new attack South bank of inlet before dredging. . . .and the same view after dredging Meeting in Tallahassee IIF continues inlet probe Officials of Arvida Corpora- tion have been asked to meet with trustees of the Internal Improvement Fund early next week to discuss placement on their upland property of sand from the Boca Raton Inlet. "We want to hear both sides of the story before we go any farther in this thing," James Smith, spokesman for the IIF told the News Friday. William Carlton, division chief of Beach and Shores, Flor- ida Board of Conservation, re- ported that 50,000 cubic yards of sand had been illegally plac- ed on Arvida's property instead of on the beach when the inlet was pumped out. Carlton came here to investigate on request of city officials, Smith said. Smith said if the allega- tions are true, it is in viola- tion of the permit issued by the trustees which stipulated all sand from the dredging pro- ject was to be placed on the south side of the inlet below the mean high water mark. He added Arvida could be charged three times the going rate for each cubic yard of sand they used. Arvida on the other hand, contends only rock unsuitable for the beach was placed on their property. ' 'We want to fully investigate the situation," Smith said. "Rest assured, we haven't for- gotten about it." "Until we have a meeting with Arvida and all other in- terests involved," he added, "we are not going to discuss it pdjblicly." Smith said the meeting would be arranged for "early in the week." Deputy Mayor Harold Maull raised several questions about the inlet at council meeting last Tuesday. He said he had reason to be- lieve that the sand trap at the southwest corner of the inlet was too deep and what it plac- ed the rubble wall in jeopardy. He also said that the trus- tees had held in,abeyance ap- proval of that sand trap. However, Smith said the only thing that would make a difference in the depth of the sandtrap "is if it bothered an aquifer (underground water- bearing rock).' Motion filed hours after postponement A new legal maneuver to dismiss the city's condemna- tion suit for 1,100 feet of oceanfront beach-park lands is now pending in Circuit Court. City Attorney Malcom An- derson said the motion to dis- miss the suit was filed by at- torneys for Schine Enterprises only hours after a special meet- ing at which City Council reiter- ated its desire to negotiate pur- chase of the land in good faith and press its condemnation ef- forts only in the event that ne- gotiation failed. At Thursday's special coun- cil session, at which a repre- sentative of Schine Enter- prises was present, council- men voted to postpone a Fri- day hearing on an order of tak- ing on the parcel and make a new attempt to acquire the pro- perty by negotiation. "We did this so we could honestly sit down and bargain in good faith," Anderson said. Council's action came on the heels of a Wednesday session in Washington with officials of the Housing and Urban Develop- ment agt»ncy to discuss a pro- test which had been filed by Schine's Washington lawyers. They told HUD officials that the city \.\6 violated some of the procedural requirenu nts of the agency. | City officials conferred Wed- nesday with Samuel C.Jackson, HUD's assistant secretary for metropolitan development to iron out the procedural re- quirements. Boca Raton so far has received two Open Spaces Act grants to match funds provided by bond issues ap- proved by the city's freehold- ers for beach-park expansion projects. The land involved is north of Spanish River Park and is described in two court cases, one involving a 1,000 foot tract and a second involving 1,100 feet. Boca Briefs., .Just five years ago today,May 4, 1964, yours truly arrived in Boca Ra-ton to become a resident. And I just want tosay I've loved every minute of it. I'm proudto be a citizen of this beautiful community bythe sea and while I enjoy returning to my Ohiohome every summer for a brief interval, itwould take a 10-ton truck, a lot of horses andand U.S. cavalry to get me to return to those•frigid, wind-blown, snowy winters of the north-ern clime.

Marge and Frank Tyson, of Harbour Terrace, are heading for the north to spend the summerin the Philadelphia area. Enroute Frank willstop off to attend the 50th reunion of his class atthe University of Delaware.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee Darling, two of Boca'smost charming people, also scheduled to leaveany day now for a summer in the north.

Wilbur Shinnolzer, the travelogue man, show-ed his pictures of the Holy Land to membersof the Boca Retired Doctors and Dentists grouprecently. Wilbur and his wife, Molly, take offagain later this month for a six week tour offoreign countries. So he'll have some new pic-tures to show in the near future.

Add Hole in One Club; Jim Sherrerd of Boca— 118 yard sixth hole at Sun and Surf Club.

The Weekly Rattazzi Report...A Broadwayactor told Dick Rattazzi, the N.Y. res-tauran t man; "Being a bachelor isn't so badexcept for having to wash, the dishes and cleanthe apartment every month."

Girl Watching.. .One of most every male'sfavorite pastimes in Florida certainly has tobe girl watching. I note that Oleg Cassini, thefamed designer, said last week in Fort Lau-derdale that the Sunshine State had more prettygirls than any place in the entire world.

Wanting to do my good deed for the week,I recommend to my masculine friends thatthey do a bit of girl watching in the diningroom of Boca Teeca's new clubhouse.

Dressed entirely in gold, she's known asthe Golden Girl. Serves the thirst quench-ing libations in the cocktail bar. Her nameis Bunny Wichcombe and Jerry Epstein, themanager, tells me she hails from the Deer-field -Pompano area.

We had another delightful meal at BocaTeeca the other evening and I understand theclub's business is on the up-swing. Also en-joyed the music of the Jay Barkston trio, which played softly for both dancing and lis-tening.

Memory Lane.. .1 met the above mentionedOleg Cassini once. It was at a dinnerpartyin Hollywood. He was married to the beauti-ful Gene Tierney at the time and I was ter-ribly disappointed when he arrived and announc-ed she had been unable to come with him be-cause of illness.

I saw this once gorgeous star on TVrecently and realized she was beginning to showher years. It made me a little sad.

The dinner at which I met Cassini was givenby one of my old friends, film director RobertSinclair and his wife, Heather Angel. Some ofmy disappointment at not meeting GeneTierney vanished when I was introduced tosome of the other guests.

Included in the group were Dorothy Parker, the celebrated wit, and Ronald Colman, an ur-bane and charming man. And do you know some-

, thing? I didn't hear Dorothy Parker say a> humorous thing all evening.> A butler met me at the door and served[: the meal. Before I departed my host, Bob•; Sinclair, took me aside and stated; "Don't think": we have this butler all the time. He was just hired• : for tonight."• ; That's Hollywood for you, a place where-: you can rent anything, costly jewels and• furs, gorgeous gowns, imported cars, wigs,

Sports Item.. .It was good to hear during theTV commentary at the Byron Nelson golf tour-ney last Sunday that the Inverness Club in myhome town o f Toled o was going to honor itsformer professional , Byron, at ceremoniesnext month,

I was a member of Inverness for many yearsand got to know the popular golf champion well.He held numerous titles at that time, includingthe U.S. open.

It was during the war years and I was putt-ing on shows for the USO, entertaining themany service men located in the immediatearea. I asked Byron to appear on three of thoseshows. He accepted and the boys in uniformgot a tremendous kick out of seeing the links

champion and the interviews I did with him.Once he brought along Jimmy Demarit whosang a song.

Nothing Inverness can do for Byron Nelsonwill be too good for him. He's fine gentle-man.

Sports Announcers.. .It was from the lipsof Chris Schenkel, ABC's TV ace, that 1heard about the above mentioned honors forByron Nelson.

Doesn't Mr. Schenkel do a fine job? He'sgood at golf, basketball, bowling, anything heundertakes. Never goes overboard. Just givesyou a clear, straight forward account of whathe's viewing.

We can competeThe Milo Smith report takes notice of lost

retail sales in Boca Raton — reporting that thefigure can be 50 to 60 per cent.

Most cities regard trade at home" as an im-portant message to get across to residents.Retailers know that dollars spent somewhereelse rob a city of its economic lifeblood.

Although the name wasn't mentioned at theSmith presentation last week, the now-underconstruction Pompano Fashion Square was with-out doubt the major consideration in the "largeregional shopping centers" Smith mentioned ascompeting with Boca Raton's central businessdistrict.

That new shopping center, only about 10 min-utes from Boca Raton by Federal Highway, willcombine the drawing power of four major de-partment stores, along with seventy-odd smallerstores.

Boca Raton's business district can be develop-ed, and can be competitive, as the Smith reportpoints out. A msjor portion of what will be re-quired, according to Smith, is the creation of thecentral business district he outlines.

The district, he indicated, needs to be clearlydefined. It should have a major departmentstore, as well as parking and new constructionand additional facilities.

Smith believes the CBD proposal is practical,

and not as difficult as some similar projectsthat have been accomplished in other cities.

Along the way, however, with the physical re-quirements for an expanded CBD that will bein keeping with Boca Raton's reputation as apleasant, attractive city, there is a need forstrengthening of an attitude.

That attitude is one of competitive spirit;of understanding that the competition is notnext door, but in the next city.

The competitive spirit needed is not one ofcutting the price throat of the store across thestreet. We need to establish a cohesive retailcommunity, in an attractive shopping district, that will convince residents — old and new —that they don't have to hit the road to do theirshopping; that they can find what they want tobuy, right here in their own community.

That attitude is already present; it needs togrow and become stronger.

A part of that needed spirit is the willingnessto be agressive enough to tell the world aboutit.

The business district of a smaller communitydoesn't have to curl up and die with the adventof a monster regional shopping center nearby.

It can fight back, making maximum use of itsown best assets. And Boca Raton has the assets.

Good will tarnishedThe luster of good will acquired by Arvida

Corp. in dredging the Boca Raton inlet wastarnished considerably last week by accusationsthat the firm had handled the dredged sand inan illegal manner to fill Arvida property.

The charges have been denied by Arvida, which contends that the handling of the dredgingand resulting disposal of sand was carried outin accordance with the permit applications.

The trustees of Florida s Internal Improve-ment Fund have, through administrative as-sistant James Smith, aired serious chargesagainst Arvida.

The matter must not be left dangling. Thetruth must be established, in the courts if nec-

essary. Arvida should not be considered guiltyof the violation until proven so. But if the fillwas, as charged, illegally placed on Arvida pro-perty, the big firm should pay the penalties, both legal and in terms of diminished stature.

It doesn't help Arvida's cause that the dredg-ing apparently was done without the approvalof the Corps of Engineers.

If Arvida is shown to have knowingly grabbedoff the fill for improvement of its own property, then the company and the city wil 1 be furtherapart then ever on an agreement for maintain-ing the inlet.

And the motives of the firm will be suspectin every future move.

On second thought

The 'fors' are mildBy GUS HARWELL

IT MAS BEEN several monthssince flirjrldadon has rearedits u ly head publicily in BocaR::iton,,

Every time ws've mentionedit in Tho New3, there has beannegative reaction from severalreaders, and I'm left to ponderthe newspaper axiom iliacinforms us all that it will bethe "ag'innera" wo hear fromon any given controversial sub-ject.

It has always been so, and itseems to be especially truewhen it comes to fluoridatingthe water supply,

A LOT OF residents arein favor of such a more, batthey fall in the "for" cate-gory, in which reaction is al-mo(3i invariably mild in con-trast with the heated reaction

of those against the proposition.I am psrsonally in favor of

fluoridation. I've said it andI'm glad. If you're for it andhope to ever get Boca Ra'on wa-ter fluoridated, you'd better bemore than lukewarm in favor ofit.

Otherwise, the ag'inners willoverwhelm your side by talking(and writing) louder and morevehemently than your side. Evenif the ag'inners are inthe minority.

I suppose its the sams as inany, other cause. One dedicatedbeliever is worth fivelukewarm, unconvinced back-ers,

IT IS A constant course ofamazement to me how driversof everything from motor-cycles to giant trucks can con-sistently zip along PalmettoPark Road on the westward

segment at speeds of 50 milesan hour and up — in a 35mile zone — with apparent im-punity.

If you haven't noticed it, trydriving from Fourth Avenuewestward and'hold your speed toexactly 35.

You'll feel as though youwere standing still. And one ofthe cars that passes you mightvery well be a police car.

There are three possible sol-utions. One is to enforce thelaw, the second is to ignoreit, as is currently being done, and the third, of course, is tora'se the speed limit.

The first solution would helpsolve the problem and so wouldthe third, provided somebodyfeels the higher speed is safe.

Bur ignoring the speed limitthere simply encourages ig-noring it everywhere else.

Another golf course, but no poolTo the Editor:

As a citizen of Boca Raton,I feel it is my responsibility tospeak for a large group of cit-izens who are concerned overthe city's present recreationalplanning. I read (BocaNews TUGS, 29th) that the citjjis hearing of a "master plan"that "reflects the city admin-istration's philosophy of lowdensity and high - quality rec-reational facilities . . . ." YetBoca Raton when consideringanother local golf course is oneof the few cities in South Flor-ida that provides no swimmingpool to its citizens. Upon in-vestigation citizens are inform-ed that there is doubt, if any in-struction in swimming will beprovided for the children of thiscity during the up-coming sum-mer. In the past lessons, ba-ts ic to survival were offered, but extremely overcrowded inthe small pool at Bibletown. The tragedy of this conditionla that only those few able toafford club, or private instruc-tion are allowed the opportun-ity given to their friends inneighboring cities, at very lowcost. Therefore I feel sure thatthere are many who question aphilosop1 ' of city planning that

makes no provision for an out-standing instructional and rec-reational facility such as a cityswimming pool, yet conceives of

another golf course whichis purely recreational bene-fits to a limited few, I only hopethat should the pool be again by-

passed and the golf course con-structed that the burden of an-other drowned child (due tolack of knowledge that couldhave been had so cheaply) willcast a long shadow over therolling greens and fairways ofthe city golf course.

This column might well be-long on the sports page ratherthan editorial but I'm not toosure how many sports we havein town.

Of course, for that matter,I'm not sure how many edi-torial readers we have either.

Anyway.Last year the Boca Raton

High School introduced golf les-sons in the physical educationclasses. With five or six golfcourses in the city limits andanother five or six within min-utes by car, it seemed a verylogical program.

Florida, for some stupid rea-son, has not followed the pat-tern of other states to providemoney for athletics. Any sportsprogram in our schools must

"Itfs easy when you have no backbone

be self - sustaining or private-ly endowed. That's why theBooster's Club has to work sohard to raise money each yearto insure football, basketballand all the other sports.

Getting back to the golf. TheBoca Raton News began a cam-paign to beg old golf clubs forthe school's use. The drive wassuccessful and about a hun-dred or so were gathered fromthe good - hearted and turnedover to Harold Hazelwood whois in charge of the physical ed-ucation classes.

The addition to the curricu-lum was well received by thestudents. Some who had neverhad a golf club in their handsbefore learned the proper wayto swing and probably a feweven continued on their own tolearn the game.

Last week, Fran Fitzgeraldof Royal Palm Yacht and Coun-try Club asked me if the schoolcould use a few old golf balls.Seems she saves those thatlose their paint and become alittle ragged looking,

I called Hazelwood and ask-ed him about it.

"We sure can," was his an-swer. "As a matter of fact, wecouldn't institute the programthis year because we didn't haveany balls to use."

He added that the clubs arealso getting in pretty bad shape.I don't wonder. Enrollment atthe high school is somewherein the neighborhood of 1,600.That means those 100 clubswere being used approximate-ly 16 times a day. They don'tlast long considering they weresomewhat old to begin with.

Well, the gist of this wholething is that the high schoolwill need all the golf balls andgolf clubs it can get by the timeschool starts in September ifthe program is to be kept alive.

If you have either that youwere planning to deep six, giveme a call and I'll see they getinto the proper hands. I won'teven take the cream off thetop because I don't play golfanymore.

Once you completely mas-ter the game, there's not muchsense continuing.

The view from Tallahassee

Worthwhile falloutBy MALCOLM B. JOHNSON

Florida's recent violent pol-itical explosion may, after all, yield a fallout of past due leg-islative financial accountabilitythat will in time temper the dis-pute, and perhaps evenjustify the $12,000 salaries leg-islators voted for themselves.

Before the howls of hurt dig-nity had died away and Gov.Kirk's veto stood overridden, quiet moves had begun in Houseand Senate to tighten up some ofthe loose spending practices hecited in his veto message.

Sponsors, naturally, say theyhave been in the works all thetime; but they could have spar-ed themselves a lot of agonyif they had trotted out the horsebefore) getting carried away ontheir pay raise cart.

It appears the Legislaturenow will at least consider put-ting itself under the same pre-cise application of the consti-tutional prohibition againstspending except in pursuanceof appropriations made by law"which it requires of all otherState agencies.

How far it has strayed fromthat mandate is shown by itsown fiscal division's report thatthis Legislature, while insession only one day to organ-ize, spent $2,631,116.95 in thefirst nine months of this fis-cal year without any item of itbeing specifically appropriat-ed by law.

That's listed as "regularsession" expenditure for theperiod ending March 31, eightdays before the regular ses-sion began April 8, Bills for thefirst month of working sessionwill not be in until Thursday.

The big items of pre-ses-sion expenditures were expens-es of members ($925,075 —not counting $203,495 for tra-vel), salaries of full time at-taches newly provided $869,-883.59), and remodeling Houseand Senate quarters ($367,020)to accommodate, in a Capitolwhich is about to be rebuilt, aLegislature the Constitutionsays must be reduced in size.

All this money was with-drawn from the Treasury byexpressions of legislative pre-rogative which make shortcutsin the regular procedure toenactment of a law — publicconsideration in first one horsethen the other and a formalvote subject to veto by the Gov-

ernor.Instead of a law, the legisla-

tors used separate resolutionspassed by the House and Sen-ate to get flat monthly expenseaccounts of $300 for Sena-tors, $600 for Representatives.

The number and salaries offull-time attaches, and the re-modeling expenditures were ap-proved only by the seven-mem-ber Joint Legislative Manage-ment Committee or by speci-fied standing committees of theHouse and Senate with approvalof the House Speaker and Sen-ate President.

How can a few members getmoney out of the treasury forthe Legislature, when it takesformal debate and action bythe whole Legislature and theGovernor to get it for anyoneelse?

Legislators claim they havestanding authority under a lawwhich makes a continuing ap-propriation of a "suffi-cient sum to cover legislativeexpenses between and dur-ing any regular, special or ex-traordinary sessions . . ."

They contend their "bridge"to this appropriation is a clausewhich authorizes the Treasur-er to pay "salary, subsistenceand mileage of members of theLegislature . . . and the perdiem of employes" and suchother expenses "as shall be au-thorized by a resolution of eith-er house,'

Now, notice that this languagedoes not specifically men-tion salaries for employes ofthe Legislature who drew that$869,883.59 before the sessionbegan, nor does it say anythingabout payments authorized byanything but "a resolution ofeither house."

Lawyers might like to arguein the Supreme Court whether aregular monthly salary for anemploye is the same as the oldper diem for days actuallyworked. They might questionwhether an expense voucher bya joint management commit-tee or from the Senate RulesCommittee or the House Ad-ministration committee is justas valid for drawing on thetreasury as a formal resolu-tion. That's the way they setthe attaches' salaries, remem-ber; and how they approved theremodeling costs.

This whole discussion maybecome moot before some com-plaining taxpayer takes them tocourt because Sen. Lee Weis-

senborn of Miami introduced abill to change that authoriza-tion to require a "law" — in-stead of merely a "resolutionof either house."

That's a good bill. Its en-actment would stop most of theloose spending; but it wouldn'thave had a chance for passage(if introduced) before Kirk putthem on the spot.

The $600 flat expense ac-counts which House membershave been receiving were can-celled the minute the $12,000salary bill veto was over-rid-den; and Senate officials saidtheir cancellation order will goto the State Comptroller Mon-day.

There was a fairly generalsuspicion that, once the $12,000salary bill was passed, therewould be a move throughthe old short-cut proceduresto keep at least the'$300 month-ly flat expense payment on topot that — making a total com-pensation of $15,600 a year, noquestions asked.

It was mainly for the fear ofthis double dip that brought op-position to the pay raise bill. Both House and Senate refusedto write a prohibition against itinto the salary bill.

But Kirk's veto and the pub-lic scorn that was directed atthem now has killed off any se-rious desire there might havebeen for adding an expense ac-count to the increased pay thisyear.

The House has been present-ed a bill — to be passed as law— allowing reimbursement foractual expenses up to $300 amonth for each legislator. Sen-ators are talking about $400.

There will be public opposi-tion to this, too. However, ourlegislators do incur some verylegitimate office and postageexpenses which shouldn'tcome out of their pockets. Weshouldn't be too hard and has-ty about denying them, up toreasonable limits and for stip-ulated purposes tied down bylaw.

That's the point — tie themdown by law. Unless there isa law, or a requirement for alaw, the 1971 or 1973 Legisla-ture could find the nerve to addby resolution or committee mo-tion several thousand dollars ofunaccountable expense moneyto the $12,000 lawful salarynow coming their way.

News from the High School

Drive underway to bolsterhigh school's general fund

By Dianne Rocheleau

Boca High studentshave been quite busy forthe past two weeks.

The student body hastaken on a candy-sellingproject and hopes toraise $4,000 for the"general fund." Themoney will be used tomake improvements onschool buildings, tolandscape the campus,to help pay graduationexpenses, and to defrayother extra costs whichthe school must pay. Thus far, the sale hasbeen successful, and thejunior high students inparticular are to be con-gratulated for a fineshow of school spirit.

People Unlimited hasbeen working especiallyhard lately. Last Mon-day, the members of theclub sponsored an opendiscussion for parents, students, teachers andmembers of the club'scommunity affiliate,Neighborhood Center.

Topics of discussioncentered around ideassuch as the differencein values between peopleof different agd groupsand different attitudestowards law, education, government, and familylife. Refreshmentswere provided and GretaLarson, a Boca Highstudent, entertained thegroup with several ori-ginal and popular folksongs. All those presentconsidered the programa great success andmembers hope to spon-sor another "forum" atthe end of May.

People Unlimited hasalso scheduled an as-sembly May 16. Repre-sentatives from otherPalm Beach County HighSchools have been invit-ed to attend the as-sembly. Hopefully theywill carry the ideas of' 'promoting under-standing and extend-ing the hand of friend-ship" back to their ownschool.

For the last six weeksth e contemporary his-tory classes of PhillipMallon and MartinChlpps are engaging inthe study of "Com-parative Religions".T\ro intern teachers areassisting in teachingthe classes. Much of theprogram is left to thestudents themselves topresent. They have beengiven the opportunity toteach their fellow stu-dents and to do extensiveresearch in aspects ofreligion which they findof particular interest.

Some of the religionsalready studied include"primitive religions"(such as vooaoo, sunworship, and others)

Greek mythology, andHinduism. By the endof the course the stu-dents will have cover-ed all the major r e -ligions of the world.

This is one coursewhich has aroused theinterest and imaginationof students. Many grouphave given authenticde-monstrations of yoga, voodoo rituals, andother relgious cere-monies. Others havedone some "role play-ing," taking on such di-verse personalities asGreek goddesses, andcontemporary preach-ers . All this gives stu-dents a broader outlookand a stimulated inter-est in their own ideasand beliefs as well asthose of other people. For many, the onlyfault with the courseseems to be in its bre-vity.

Perhaps in years tocome such programswill become official, fullcredit courses with timefor in-depth study of thegreat religious and phil-osophical concepts ofthe world.

The social studiesdepartment has cer-tainly done an excellentjob of preparing BocaHigh serniors for col-lege. Throughout theyear students have beenencouraged to think forthemselves, to get reallyinvolved in what they arestudying, and to carrytheir search for kow-ledge beyond the class-room.

Last weekend manymembers of the com-munity were privilegedto see the chorus pre-sentation of Irving Ber-lin's "Mr. President".The musical was de-lightful and is sure to belong remembered bythose who saw it. Stu-dents were called uponto play a number of com-p l e x , sophisticatedroles, such as bellydancers, secret ser-vice men, foreign ag-ents, and last but notleast, Mr. President.

Needless to say thecast was able to riseto the challenge and didan excellent job. Muchof the credit for the pro-duction's success alsogoes to Mrs VivianRandon director andproducer of the play. Al-so, the members of thecommunity who sup-ported the show are tobe reconized, for with-

out themsucceed.

No hearing date has been setfor Schine's motion to dismissthe second case, Anderson said.He pointed out, however, thatit is essentially similar to amotion filed by Schine's attor-neys in the first case. Thatmotion was denied by the court,Anderson noted.

After the luncheon he nar-rated a film which was takenby the three astronauts duringthe Appollo eight trip.

The film, after depicting aslightly-too green earth fromspace, switched inside the cap-sule.

"This is to show you howgraceful Jim Lovell can be(inspace," Borman quipped, "Itdoesn t mean anything unlessyou know how clumsy he is onthe ground."

He was running more thana hour late, he had plans tovisit his grandmother in PalmBeach before he left for Wash-ington, yet his sense of humorwas intact.

It was the first timethe Bobcats 65-1/2 hadbeen beaten on their ownfield. However, CoachCharlie Bennett's teamsaw 10 men qualifyingfor berths on the stateteam at Gainesvillenext weekend.

News gets around fast that the Boca Raton Inletis now open. I received a package in the mail thisweek marked "Special Coho Samon jigs for theBoca Raton Inlet.

Of course, we don't have Coho here and neverwill have . They are found in the cold waters ofthe north.

But the open inlet promises to bring otherkinds of fish. ,;

The gentleman who sent the jigs was only'slightly pulling my leg because he has knownour inlet for many more years than I have orfor most of the people in Boca Raton for thatmatter.

Al Jones, of Hollywood, fishing columnist forthe Hollywood Sun Tattler, recalls fishing theinlet years ago when just about every kind ofsalt water fish that swims could be caught there.

He has told me many times of the great snookfishing that used to be available before the oldjetties washed away in a hurricane some timeback. Al and some of his buddies drove up herequite regularly to fish.

I'm going to hang onto to these Coho jigs be-cause I have faith that very soon we will onceagain see great fishing in the inlet. It may notbe until fall when the finger mullet make their an-nual run. However, when the bait finds out the in-let is open and begins to move in, the big fishwill follow.

They tell me you used to be able to fill a boatwith bluefish in the middle of Lake Boca Raton. That day may come again if we're lucky.

Fresh water fishing in the Loxahatchee hasn'thit the peak it did about this time two years ago,but it 's pretty good.

Water has been kept high in Conservation AreasOne and Two this year and we didn't get ourspring drought as usual. Because of this,it has been only the good angler who could r e -gularly fill Ms string. Bass have been deep inthe grass where most weekenders seldom ven-ture.

This week, lots of yearling bass and a few goodsized largemouths were being caught on the southside of the recreation landing in Area Two.

Roy Snyder, manager, said yesterday, the waterhas dropped off slightly and bass are feeding well.A full moon earlier this week saw them feedingheavily at night but activity is expected to pickup again today and tomorrow.

Tourist trade in the big swamp is falling offslightly and from here on through November isan ideal time for the really avid fisherman to getout and catch fish.

Coach Bennett accepts trophy from Harry Benson.

Dear Ann: Our teen-age son had to be hos-pitalized last week fora minor operation. They put Yule in a semi-private room for $50 aday. His roommatewas a man about 70 wholooked dead. He had car-diac failure and hisbreathing was so labor-ed you could hear it inthe hall.

Yule is a nervous boyto begin with and beingin the same room withthat man upset him ter-ribly. When my hus-band asked the doctor If

he could please find an-other room for Yule hesaid we were lucky toget any kind of a room —that the hospital wasjammed.

Two days after Yule'ssurgery, his roommatedied. Yule fainted whenthey wheeled the manout. This incident slow-ed up Ms recovery by atleast a week.

Please tell me if thereis somebody we can sue. Also, what do you thinkof a hospital that woulddo a thing like this?

groom's brother andushers were EugeneBitchko and Robert Jef-fries, friends of thebridegroom.

For her daughter'swedding, Mrs. Burn-ett chose a gold dressAnd coat ensemble; thebridegroom's motherwore an aqua dress witha jewelled neckline. They both were present-ed with gardenia cor-sages.

Dear I: Sue anybodyyou like but you won'tcollect. Most hospitalsare extremely crowd-ed. They do the best theycan. Granted it was un-fortunate that your sonhad to be roomed withthe old man, but I'msure they didn't have abetter place to put him.

Dear Ann Landers:When I had my first ba-by I was frightened todeath, not of childbirth, but of taking care of him.I was afraid to hold him, afraid to feed him, andafraid to bathe him.

I had nightmares ofmy baby choking onmilk. I dreamed that Iaccidentally drownedhim in the bathinette. When he cried at night,I was paralyzed withfear. I was sure he wasseriously ill.

One day a neighborwho sensed my anxietyexplained how each of usneeds something out-side ourselves to be-lieve in. She said wemust place our trust andfaith in a higher being.I've never been a r e -ligious person, Ann, butthat wise woman un-locked the door to peaceof mind for me whenshe uttered these sim-ple words — "If youworry, you don't trust,If you trust, you don'tworry."

Her one phrasechanged my life. Pleaseprint it. Perhaps itwill help some otheryoung mother as it help-ed me.

—F.D.Dear F.D. : How bea-

utiful! And how true IHer words are wordsworth repeating — "If

you worry, you don ttrust. If you trust, youdon't worry," Thankyou.

IDear Ann Landers:

The traveler in lovewith Venice will soondiscover writing aboutthis lovely city of theAdriatic a difficult task.Superlatives and glow-ing phrases leap forth

to color the page with aquality as unreal andfantastic as the city it-self.

The very first view ofthe city, when approach-ing by train, is from thelong causeway connect-ing the island with themainland. A glitteringhaze softens the outline.

Soon the graceful belltower and semi-circu-lar domes of SaintMarks grow to recogni-zable size. The train ad-justs to another angle. The city is lost fromsight for several mo-ments.

There is a brief haltfor signals. Below in thelagoon drift a few fish-ing boats. The men inthem are coppery-skinned, impudentlymasculine and inclinedto stare — but, ofcourse, they are Italianand' this, their nationalpastime I

The train glides for-ward, gains speed andsuddenly Santa LuciaStation is there to wel-come the visitor, "Ben-venuto a Venezia."

There is a particularair of excitement aboutthis neat functionalbuilding. The exuber-ance and gaiety of theold city have invaded itsclean - cut l i n e s .Through large plateglass doors the firstclose view of the CanalGrande glides into view.

If a hotel on this streetis choosen by the tra-veler the view from hiswindow may hold himcaptive for hours. Onlya stern, self-disciplin-ed mortal could unpack, dress or rest with a live, live show only a fewmeters below.

Among the crowd arethe Italians themselves. Not only the'Venetians, but Italian tourists fromother regions of Italy, seeing home territoryfirst.

There is no one quiteas expansive or happyas an Italian on holiday,,He has made his mom-entary escape from adull, drab existence in-to what most people er-roneously think sur-rounds him continuous-ly. "Sunny Italy" andthe "dolce vita" are formost Italians only theseshort, ephemeral hoursof vacation.

From Santa LuciaStation the Grand Canaltwines itself through thecity like some curioussea serpent that haswandered in from theAdriatic. The ' 'motor-bus-boat'* follows thiswater road all the wayto St. Marks Square.

It is an intriguing tripthat should be made asfrequently as possible. Each ride another lovelybuilding and palace canbe discovered. The can-vases of Bellini, Canal-etto, Carpaccio andGuardi have come alive! Here lies the city glit-

tering, reflected againand again in the brokenmirror made by eachcanal.

Once a visitor to Ven-ice complained the cityto be a most unpleasantplace. Of course, thiswas a man who loathedcats, detested beauti-ful women, a man whoeven refused to ride ina gondola!

Never a city forgloom, Venice dedicatesherself to blithe heartsand gay spirits.

Try makinga wine closetSpring: when a young

man's fancy turns to golfand gone flshin'. And ahomemaker's "unfan-cy" turns to tacklingclosets and cabinets.

This season, turn theprospect of spring clos-et cleaning into a pleas-urable one by taking ad-vantage of certain spaceage concepts. Maximizelimited or crammedstorage spaces by r e -decorating and organiz-ing them with storagebags and stackable,space-saving closet andcabinet drawers. Findextra room to hangspring coats and thosenew Easter ensemblesby installing glide-outgarment carriers andfold away, two-tieredhanger units.

And since space savedis space earned, yourefforts deserve to berewarded. For example, consider using the ad-ditional room you'vecreated to start buildinga home wine celler. Thismost traditional and im-pressive of home ac-cessories is inexpen-sive and hardly as for-midable as it may seem.A look first in the dic-tionary will tell you thata wine cellar is simply a"stock of wines."

A wine cellar r e -quires a shady spot witha fairly stable temper-ature between 45 and 60degrees. A closet orpantry area where thebottles can rest on theirsides is more than ade-quate. This keeps corksfrom drying out and airfrom entering the bot-tles and spoiling thetaste of the wines.

If the man of the fam-ily also is the familydo - it - yourselfer, youshouldn't have too muchtrouble persuading himto build a wine rack tosuit the space.

Without making a ma-jor investment, you canstock your cellar with acomprehensive "s ta r t -e r " collection of prem-ium table wines, includ-ing such red wines asCalifornia Burgundy,Gamay Beaujolais andRubion, and white winessuch as Emerald Dry,Ghablis and Rhine Cas-tle. You may also want toinclude such dessertwines as the Rare Sher-ries, Rare Souzao Portand Madeira. All areready to serve when theyleave the vineyard butyoull find they improvewith age in the bottle.Of course, no cellar iscomplete without a cou-ple of bottles of cham-pagnes.

With a wine cellar asa permanent fixture inyour home, you'll findthat you can reap the r e -wards of spring'sorganizational effortsfor many seasons tocome. And what a sta-tus symbol 1

Baseball's "seventhinning stretch" de-veloped at ManhattanCollege, where intra-mural or intercollegi-ate baseball has beenplayed since 1864. Thecoach, Brother Jasper, gave student fans sucha break during agame one day in 1882,and the practice spreadto other colleges andthen to all baseball.
