Totals and Averages |183|160.13|153.14| 95.63| 59

The total enrollment shown by this table is four-

teen less than for the preceding year. The enrollment

for the present year is somewhat larger.

The per cent of attendance, 95.63%, is excellent.

The number of instances of tardinesses is very small.

We have made an excellent gain in both of these items.

The showing is the best that we have made in the past

ten years.

I understand that some citizens have expressed

surprise at the small number of pupils reported in the

South Milton School. For the information of those

who do not understand the situation I will say that,

under a special act of the Legislature, this school is

maintained jointly by Milton and Rochester. Milton

is responsible for the management of the school and

52 Annual Report

pays two-thirds of the costs. Rochester pays one-

third of the costs. Last year there were thirteen Roch-ester pupils in this school. The records of these pupils

are kept in a separate register which is given to the

school authorities of Rochester, and so these pupils do

not appear in the statistics of Milton.

The following pupils were not absent nor tardy for

one or more quarters during the year

:

filled this year: two at Milton and one at Milton Mills.

Mr. William S. Nagle, a graduate of Dartmouth Col-

lege, and Martha W. Griffin, a graduate of PlymouthNormal School, were appointed to fill the vacancies at

Milton. Helen M. Dunnells, a teacher of five years'

experience and with one year's training in normalschool, was appointed to the vacancy at Milton Mills.

54 Annual Report

HEALTH WORK

The work of medical inspection in the schools has

been continued by Miss Cordelia Davidson. Her re-

port will follow.

Several clinics have been held as explained in Miss

Davidson's report. Miss Davidson is to be congratu-

lated upon the success of these clinics which have been

held in this and former years. I wish to express mythanks to the several local organizations whose co-

operation has made these clinics possible.

On account of the expense, the officials of Straf-

ford County Y. M. C. A. have felt it necessary to with-

draw the services of an expert supervisor in physical

training which we have been privileged to enjoy for

several years free of charge. We shall be obliged to

get along without the services of an expert supervisor

in this work unless the District is willing to contribute

something toward paying the salary of the supervisor.

The cost would probably be somewhere between $300

and $400 per year.

NUTE HIGH SCHOOL

The corps of teachers in Nute High School is the

same as last year, no changes having been made. Thenumber of pupils is nearly the same, although slightly

smaller. About one-third of the whole number are

tuition pupils from other towns.

The per capita cost of instruction last year was$71.82, or $9.50 lower than for the preceding year. This

reduction was due chiefly to the increased number of

pupils.

This item, the lowest cost in any high school or

academy in the state, determines the amount which

can be collected for tuition from other towns.

Town of Milton 55

Your attention is especially called to the report of

the headmaster which follows.

Respectfully submitted,

FRED W. DUDLEY,

Superintendent of Schools

REPORT OF HEADMASTER OF NUTEHIGH SCHOOL

To the Superintendent of Schools and the Members of

the Board of Trustees:

I herein submit for your consideration my third

annual report as headmaster of Nute High School.

The school year opened September 4 with an en-

rollment of eighty pupils, thirty-eight girls and forty-

two boys. One boy registered later in the Fall makingthe total enrollment for the year eighty-one. During

the first half year nine pupils have withdrawn fromschool leaving our enrollment at the present time sev-

enty-two. The number of pupils leaving school has

been greater than during the past two years, the rea-

sons being justifiable in many instances. Three re-

moved from town, two were unable to secure trans-

portation, one was due to sickness and the remaining

three were either indifferent to high school work or

unprepared for it.

Nute High School has received creditable mentionfrom the state department for several years for main-taining a high per cent attendance each year. This

year we continued the good record for some weeks byhaving an average of 98% but epidemics of contagious

56 Annual Report

diseases began to afflict us in December and soon after-

ward the prevailing epidemic of influenza began to

make itself evident among the pupils in ever increas-

ing numbers, on many days from twelve to twenty pu-

pils being absent.

The splendid class which was graduated from the

school last June left a gap in the scholastic, literary,

musical, and athletic activities which is very difficult

to fill and which will take time and effort to replace.

The tuition rate has been increased from sixty

dollars per year to seventy-one dollars and eighty-two

cents, this amount being the maximum amount allowed

by the state to charge, the figures being based upon the

annual per capita cost per pupil. There are twenty-

eight tuition pupils registered at the present time.

Respectfully submitted,

RALPH G. REED
