If you’ve recently been to the Arboretum, you surely know that a lot is going on! All of the construction we have endured is finally bringing results. You can read more about progress on the new Arboretum Loop Trail on page 11. The trail will provide improved access to many different places in the Arboretum, and it is exciting to see the first section open and attracting so much use. Soon, work will begin on the new Centennial Garden—extending the season of interest along Azalea Way.

It has been a productive year at the Arboretum Foundation. To celebrate our role as the major support organization for the Seattle Japanese Garden, our Opening Night Party at the 2017 NW Flower and Garden Show featured a Japanese theme, and our stunning Show garden depicted a “Hanami” picnic celebration in a rustic Japanese garden.

Back at the Arb, we were thrilled to see the completion of the shelter for the Fiddleheads Forest pre-school and the successful beginning of our fundraising campaign for the predesign studies for a new Environmental Education Center here. And, people so loved ArbFest—our inaugural summer party—last July that we will be doing it again on July 20, 2017.

We paid tribute to Director Emeritus John Wott by dedicating a path in the New Zealand Forest in his name. On a sorrowful note, however, we lost a dear colleague, UW Botanic Gardens director Sarah Reichard, in the summer of 2016 (see page 10). When we fulfill her dream of a new Education Center in the Arboretum, it will become part of her rich legacy here.

Finally, we thank our dedicated board, volunteers, and staff who work together to produce our annual cycle of plant sales, work parties, and events, as well as our donors who provide the crucial financial support that makes all that we do possible. We feel fortunate to be part of this amazing community that sustains this Arboretum, Seattle’s most beloved public garden.

Donors and members continued their strong support for the Arboretum in 2016–17 by attending our events, responding to our appeals, renewing their membership commitments, and more. Your generosity sustains this special place, and we can’t thank you enough!

More than 150 guests attended our inaugural ArbFest Summer Party on July 14, 2016. It was a splendid affair. St. Clouds served up delectable dishes, Batch 206 Distillery mixed sublime cocktails, and Pearl Django wowed the crowd with its seductive gypsy jazz. Guests also enjoyed a geocaching adventure, games of petanque, and more. A huge thanks to our event partners, event committee (led by Zanny Milo), and supporters for making this a special evening to remember.

In September 2016, the FallAbundance plant sale was our most successful yet, raising more than $6,500 for the Arboretum. Most of that total came from plant purchases, but more than $650 consisted of additional donations made at the register! Hundreds of shoppers came to our Gifts & Greens Galore in early December. It was also our best holiday sale ever, despite a major meltdown of our shop computer.

More than 350 guests joined us at the Washington State Convention Center in February 2017 for the Opening Night Party & Auction, our premier annual fundraiser kick-starting the Northwest Flower & Garden Show. Inspired by Hanami, the lively Japanese custom of picnicking under spring cherry blossoms, the party was chaired this year by Della Balick and Jim Reid.

A SERIES OF WONDERFUL EVENTS!

Inspirational Moment: Dan Hinkley honoring Elizabeth Moses during the 2017

Opening Night Party.

Inaugural Arbfest: Guests enjoying our first summer party in July 2016.

Our longest-serving volunteer Elizabeth Moses and her husband Alan served as our honorary event chairs, and Dan Hinkley gave an inspiring speech that helped us raise more than $90,000 for the Arboretum during the “make a difference” portion of the party alone.

Our Early Bloomers spring plant sale on April 8, 2017 was another big success. More than 200 shoppers came and helped us raised over $7,200 for the Arboretum. Nearly $600 of that amount came from generous donations at the cash register.

The Arboretum received a total of $32,058 during the Seattle Foundation’s annual GiveBIG event on May 10. This included a $2500 “Dollars for Change” award from the GiveBIG sponsors, handed out raffle-style to some participating non-profits. It also included a $2,500 matching fund from an anonymous donor and a designated gift of $2,000 from Foundation Unit 1/75. About 190 individuals donated to the Arboretum altogether during GiveBIG.

HONORINg DR. WOTTMore than 200 close friends of Arboretum Director Emeritus John Wott gathered in the Arboretum on October 2, 2016, to celebrate his tireless leadership, inspired teaching, and passionate advocacy for the Arboretum—and to dedicate a trail in the New Zealand Forest in his honor. It was a splendid sunny day, featuring bagpipe music, a ribbon cutting ceremony, and a procession up the trail, followed by speeches, champagne, and cake at the Pacific Connections shelter. Speakers included Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Michael Shiosaki and UW School of Environmental and Forest Science’s Tom Hinckley. In her speech, Foundation Executive Director Paige Miller quoted one of John’s former students, Jamie Gibbs, “How appropriate that the Arboretum is naming a path for John, considering the professional, moral, and spiritual path he has guided his followers down for years.”

gREAT STRIDES AT THE JAPANESE gARDENAs the first year of the renewed partnership between the Arboretum Foundation and Seattle Parks and Recreation comes to a close, there is much to reflect on at the Seattle Japanese Garden. We have made great strides over this year to find new ways to support the garden. Below are a few of our proudest accomplishments.

In July 2016, we created a much-needed new volunteer initiative: the Niwashi Training Program. A niwashi is a Japanese gardener who has studied gardening for 200 years. Impossible, right? But with the combined skills of our wonderful volunteers (about 50 altogether), we have the collective knowledge of a true niwashi.

Nicknamed “niwa,” this group of volunteers is dedicated to garden maintenance. Three days a week, they weed moss, rake the garden paths, deadhead flowers, and do whatever else needs to be done to keep the garden beautiful. Between July and the close of the garden in November of last year, they donated almost 1,000 hours of work! Many visitors say that the garden looks better than ever.

If you’ve looked at the Japanese Garden website (www.seattlejapanesegarden.org) recently, you’ll have noticed two things: first, a beautiful new layout, including a mobile-friendly interface; and second, a new events calendar. In an effort to make the garden more accessible and family-friendly, we’ve also reworked the schedule of events for 2017.

Stewards in the Making: Niwashi volunteers during a training session in the garden.

HANAMI gARDEN AWARDED gOLD!The Arboretum’s display garden at the 2017 Northwest Flower & Garden Show celebrated the recent reunion of the Seattle Japanese Garden with its original support partner, the Arboretum Foundation. Entitled Hanami—Savoring Spring, the display depicted a traditional, 1920s Japanese farmhouse and garden during the annual spring viewing of the cherry blossoms. Hanami was awarded a Gold Medal by the Show judges and also won the Garden Design Magazine Award for showcasing “innovative design, horticultural acuity, and inventive productivity.” Thanks to our designers Bob Lilly, Phil Wood, and Roger Williams, our partners at the City and University of Washington, and to all the hardworking volunteers who made the garden possible.

Party Performers: Butoh dancers from Kaoru Okumura and Company

9

And we’ve added new events! On the first Thursday of each month, visitors can now enjoy free entry into the garden from 3 p.m. until close. In partnership with a Seattle Parks and Recreation initiative, we are offering various arts demonstrations and activities during this free entry period to bring the joy of the Japanese Garden to everyone in the city. We’ve also debuted a monthly Family Day program on the first Saturday of each month, featuring kid-friendly activities such as puppet shows, origami folding, and koi feeding, as well as lots of fun for the whole family.

There has been an incredible amount of progress in the garden, thanks to help from volunteers old and new. We are so excited about the possibilities ahead of us this year, and we invite you to come be a part of it all as a visitor, volunteer, donor, or advocate.

In the fall of 2016, the Foundation and UW Botanic Gardens kicked off a quiet campaign to raise the funds needed to complete a pre-design study for the construction of a new environmental education center at the Arboretum. The center fits within the framework of the 2001 Arboretum Master Plan and is the dream of late UWBG director Sarah Reichard.

The Arboretum’s education programs serve about 9,800 kids a year. The Master Plan set the goal of doubling that number, and demand for our educational programming is high; however, the old horticulture buildings that support the programs are cramped, poorly heated, and ill-fitted to their current use.

With a new education-focused space, we could welcome many more students from diverse communities across the region. The cost of the pre-design is $375,000, and it will cover preliminary design, building cost estimates, parking needs, and more. By June 2017, our campaign has raised more than $250,000. We’re moving forward together to make Sarah’s dream a reality.

Improvements Needed: The Big Greenhouse “classroom,” proposed site for the new center.

EDUCATION CENTER CAMPAIgN

We were deeply saddened by the passing of our colleague Sarah Reichard in August 2016. The UW Botanic Gardens director died unexpectedly while leading a plant tour in South Africa. She was only 58 years old. Her leadership in the Arboretum was eventful. She started the BioBlitz—citizen science at its best. She expanded the children’s education programs to include the summer camps and the Fiddleheads Forest Preschool. She was restless to get things done: the New Zealand Forest, the camellia renovation, the new Loop Trail. It was Sarah’s dream to have a great place in the Arboretum for kids and adults to learn about nature. We partnered with her to get that dream up and running, and we hope it can become one of her lasting legacies.

SARAH’S PASSINg AND LEgACy

Construction of the new Arboretum Loop Trail has been proceeding swiftly since it kicked off in March 2016. By December of 2016, the construction crew had reached the half-way mark in the project, despite having to contend with wet fall weather.

In late March, 2017, the first section of the new trail opened, connecting Arboretum visitors from 31st Avenue East and East Madison to the south end of Arboretum Drive. With the return of dry weather in the spring, the crew was able to focus on completing the creek and wetland restoration component of the project.

The final phase of the project will be the construction of the trail section adjacent to Foster Island Road. This will take place in the summer and fall of 2017 and will likely cause some lane closures on the road. The City, University, and Foundation know that construction can be difficult, and we appreciate your patience as we complete these improvements to the Arboretum. The trail is expected to be finished in late fall, 2017. A big public opening ceremony is being planned for spring 2018.

This year (2017) marks the 100th anniversary of the Seattle Garden Club. To celebrate, the Arboretum is creating a new summer-themed garden on the north side of Azalea Way pond, using a grant from the Garden Club and matching funds from the Arboretum Foundation. Jason Morse of AHBL and Iain Robertson of the University of Washington collaborated on the design. The centerpiece will be a long, curving, stone bench offering views across the pond to the historic gazebo perched on the hill above. Summer-blooming shrubs—including big drifts of hydrangea—will be the horticultural stars of the show. A commemorative plaque will honor the contributions made by the Seattle Garden Club to the Arboretum—including the funds for the original Olmsted design. The garden is scheduled to open this September.

CENTENNIAL SUMMER gARDEN

This place would not be the same without our hardworking volunteers. Arboretum Shop volunteers welcome visitors to the park with a warm smile; volunteers in the Pat Calvert Greenhouse and Plant Donations Nursery use their green thumbs to provide fairly priced, high-quality plants to home gardeners; and the Garden Stewards work

every week to help make each collection bed look its best. Through their work, our volunteers show each person coming through here that the Arboretum is a place worth caring for. Over the past year, we kept up our strong volunteer base: 950 volunteers donated more than 14,000 hours to support the Arboretum.

Volunteers played a key role in our event fundraisers in 2016–17. In addition to providing support to our annual Opening Night Party in February 2017, the volunteers were excited to be a part of our new ArbFest summer party in July 2016. They greeted guests, made cocktails, passed out food, and helped contribute to the evening’s festive atmosphere.

VOLUNTEERS MAkE THE ARBORETUM SHINE THE ARBORETUM’S WONDER WEEDERS!The Garden Stewards continued to have a huge impact by tackling the prolific stinky bob, bindweed, creeping buttercup, horsetail and other weeds in planting beds at Pacific Connections and along Azalea Way. A total of 27 stewards donated more than 875 hours of work. We welcomed Jillian Weed on board as our new Stewards Coordinator; we also welcomed UW Botanic Gardens gardener Darrin Hedberg into the fold as he took over working with our volunteers in the New Zealand Garden. The stewards were delighted to expand their work this year into the Woodland Garden, under the supervision of UWBG’s Roy Farrow.

Brew Crew: Volunteers from Starbucks Store Development team weeded ivy in the Arboretum.

13

In this last year, the Arboretum has seen a large spike in corporate and community groups giving back to our park. Volunteers from Google returned for the fourth year in a row to weed in the Chilean Entry Garden! Starbucks staff came out in force during Earth Month, April 2017: Three different departments from Starbucks headquarters joined us for weeding work parties in the Arboretum. Starbucks also donated 10 gallons of coffee to keep the 340 volunteers who worked in the Arboretum on Earth Day (April 22, 2017) fully caffeinated! We were also fortunate to catch the eye of Clif Bar, which donated more than 1,000 snack bars in Septmeber to fuel our volunteers.

The Arboretum Foundation Units have been plugging away to support our park. Unit 69 held a summer garage sale in Edmonds, and Unit 16 held a holiday brunch and auction in Medina to raise funds for the Arboretum. Unit 26 also held a spring auction fundraiser on Bainbridge Island to raise money to support public programming in the Seattle Japanese Garden. In addition, the Units have also been helping us behind the scenes! Units 5 and 79 helped us prepare for Gifts & Greens Galore last December, and Units 69 and 80 did crafts for our Opening Night Party this year.

At our annual meeting in June of 2016, we honored Jim Reid with our Volunteer Legacy Award for his longstanding and passionate commitment to the Arboretum Foundation. In August 2016, in partnership with UW Botanic Gardens, we had the immense pleasure of celebrating our volunteers at the Center for Urban Horticulture, where we enjoyed Yesler Swamp-themed cocktails and plenty of chatting. On this night, we honored both Pat Drummond and Bill Wilson as our Volunteers of the Year for their vast support in the Arboretum Shop: Both work multiple days a month as cashiers and conduct research looking at how we can improve the shop.

STAFF UPDATEIn the past year, we’ve bid farewell to some valuable Foundation employees and welcomed three new staff members onboard. In June 2016, we hired Nick Magruder as our new Operations Coordinator. Nick manages our busy office and provides administrative support to our executive director. Before joining our team, he served as a campaign director for Environment Washington.

Also in June, we hired Jillian Weed as our new Garden Stewards Assistant. A former gardener and plant ecologist for Seattle Parks and Recreation, Jillian was perfectly suited to the job of managing and recruiting volunteer stewards to help care for the Arboretum. Sadly, we had to say farewell to her in June 2017, when she left to take up the horticulture manager position at the Pacific Science Center.

In February 2017, our much-loved Japanese Garden Support Manager Rumi Tsuchihashi resigned her position. We promoted her assistant Jessa Gardner to the management role, and she’s doing a wonderful job organizing events and educational programs at the Seattle Japanese Garden. In May 2017, we brought on Chie Iida as our new part-time Japanese Garden Events Coordinator to assist Jessa. Chie moved from Japan to the U.S. as an exchange student and fell in love with the Northwest. She has degrees in art and horticulture.

In late April 2017, we bid farewell to our Development Director Chris Stollery, who left to work as a freelance consultant. In the year and a half that she was with us, Chris did a great job on the Education Center campaign and guiding our fundraising efforts. In June 2017, we said goodbye our Development Associate, Nat Bennett. Nat’s been an essential member of our team since summer 2014. He’s moving on to complete his Master’s Degree in Public Administration with an internship at the King County Office for Performance, Strategy, and Budget.
