1988-89 MEN'S BASKETBALL PREVIEW Central Washington University, which failed

to win the District 1 basketball championship for the first time since 1974 last year, will be out to reclaim the title this winter as Dean Nicholson begins his 25th season as head coach.

The Wildcats had a respectable 23-11 record and forced Western Washington University to thethird game of the district championship series. Four starters return off last year's squad. Toss in two former NCAA Division 1 players and add a couple of outstanding junior college transfers and you have the makings of another excellent team.

The 'Cats were ranked eighth in the NAIA Coaches pre-season poll and were ranked ninth by Street and Smith in their annual basketball preview publication.

Nicholson, who has 546 career wins at CWU and has guided five teams· into the NAIA Final Four, is optimistic. "We have the potential to have a dam good club," he said.

Among the returnees is Carl Aaron. The 6-6 senior forward from Detroit, Mich., posted AllAmerican numbers a year ago - averaging 21.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. He shot 51.5 percent from the floor. In five of CWU's final eight games, Aaron scored 30 or more points.

Nicholson is moving Aaron from big to small forward. Aaron's forte is on offense. "He's an outstanding offensive player, but hopefully we won't have to rely on him as much this season," Nicholson said. "Carl also boards well and he can play defense. He's a complete player."

The move of Aaron to small forward enables Nicholson to move Dave Biwer (6-7, Sr., Kirkland -Juanita) to power forward to make room for Van Beard (6-9, Sr., Seattle - Garfield) at center.

Beard is making his fourth collegiate stop since earning MVP honors and leading Garfield to the AAA high school state championship in 1983. He previously has played at the University of Arizona, Nevada-Reno and Phillips (Okla.) University.

He stayed at Reno long enough to set a singlegame school record for blocked shots (eight) . "He gives us a defensive rebounding force we didn't have last year," Nicholson said. "He is a hard worker and can run floor for a big player."

Biwer averaged 7 .5 points and 6.6 rebounds last year. He also had 87 offensive rebounds. An outstanding defender, Biwer had 45 steals and 33 blocks. He also ranked third on the team in assists with 75.

"Dave is an improved offensive player. You couldn't ask for any more than he gave us on the

6

boards and defensively last year," Nicholson said. Also returning is Steve Evenson (6-7, Sr.,

Kirkland - Juanita) . Evenson averaged 10.7 points and 4.8 rebounds, but shot just 39.4 percent.

Along with Biwer and Aaron, both starting guards also return - Bryan Gerig (6-3, 190, Sr., Bieber, CA) and Art Haskins (6-3, Sr. , Tacoma -Mt. Tahoma).

Gerig led the team in assists with 141 and also averaged 5.6 points per game. Hasl<lns, coming off a four-year layoff, ranked second on the team in scoring averaging 10.5 points.

Even when Gerig returns, he doesn't figure to move into the starting point guard slot because of the addition of Skagit Valley transfer Jim Toole (6-2, Jr., Bellevue - Sammamish). "We'll play Bryan more at small forward and off-guard," Nicholson said.

Toole hasn't played since the 1985-86 season when he averaged 13.8 assists at the Mt. Vernon school. He set a NW AACC record with 34 assists in one game. "Jim is one of the key additions," Nicholson said.

111e off-guard position has also been strengthened with the addition of Jock White (6-4, Sr., Pasadena, CA). White previously played at New Mexico State, starting eight games in 1986-87 and averaging 5.4 points.

"He is a great basketball player," Nicholson said. "He can score, he's outstanding on defense and he passes well. He is a complete player and I look for him to be a leader for us."

Joining Gerig, Hasl<lns, Toole and White in the guard picture are letterman Kelly Byrne (6-0, Sr. , Shelton - Grays Harbor); JVer Craig Wise (6-0, So., Cashmere) and newcomers Alphonso Goldwire (Jr., Seattle - Chief Sealth), Al Griffin (6-2, Jr., Anchorage, AK - Bartlett & Pierce CC) and Stacy Everhart (5-11 , Jr., Yakima - Davis & YVC).

Another off-guard or small forward possibility is Scott Kenney. From Elyria, Ohio and Walker College in Georgia, the 6-4 sophomore has been one of the big surprises in fall camp. "He might be our best athlete," Nicholson said. "He's quick, he jumps and shoots well. He needs to work on his defense, but its going to be hard to keep him out of the lineup."

Overall, Nicholson thinks the 'Cats will have more quickness, will be a better outside shooting team and better defensively than the 1987-88 team. The veteran coach doesn't, however, anticipate any major style changes.

LEO AND DEAN NICHOLSON: 1051 WINS AND COUNTING

Central Washington University keeps making history on the maplecourt. The Wildcats hold the record for most appearances and consecutive appearances in the NAIA national tournament. They've participated in 21 · national tourneys, including nine in a row from 1974 to 1982.

In 78 seasons, Wildcat teams have won 1175 games and lost 718, a winning percentage of .621. Even more remarkable is the fact a father-and-son coaching combination is responsible for nearly 90 percent of the wins. Leo Nicholson coached 505 victories in 33 seasons winning nine conference titles before retiring in 1964.

Since 1964, son Dean has won 546 games. CWU won 14 Evergreen Conference titles and shared the WIBA championship in 1980 (its only year of existence) under the younger Nicholson 's coaching.

the all-time record. Peru State, Neb., is a distant second with 13.

CWU's best finish came in 1970 when it finished second and Nicholson was selected NAIA National Coach-of-the-Year. The 'Cats also finished third in 1967, 1969 and 1987 and fourth in 1985.

CWU has reached the quarterfinals of the national tournament in each of its last three appearances, twice earning a berth in the Final Four.

First team All-American honors have been won by three CWU players - Mel Cox in 1967, Paul Adams in 1970 and Rich Hanson in 1973. Thirteen other players have either won second team, third team or honorable mention honors.

In 1987, Ron vanderSchaaf was named to the second team and was later selected in the seventh round of the NBA draft by the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers. The Nicholsons are the winningest father-son

coaching combination in the history of college basketball with 1051 victories. LEO NICHOLSON AW ARD In 1971 a group of Ellensburg businessmen purchased a trophy to be presented each year to the top

small-college basketball team in the Pacific Northwest. The trophy is awarded to the school determined to be the outstanding team by a panel of sportswrit

ers, broadcasters and sports information directors, who also select a Coach-of-the-Year. The award honors the memory of the late Leo Nicholson, who won 505 games at Central from 1930

to 1964. Central, under the direction of Leo's son Dean, has won the award seven times and the younger

Nicholson has been voted Coach-of-the-Year twice.

NATALIE LONG (Head Junior Varsity Coach,First Year)

Natalie Long, a two-year starter for the Wildcats, joins the junior varsity coaching staff this winter while she completes work on ' her degree in law enforcement.

Long graduated from · Hanford High School in 1984 where she lettered in basketball and track. In basketball, she earned first team all-league honors.

She then played two seasons at Spokane Falls before transferring to Central. She averaged 10.3 points and 5.4 rebounds her junior season. Last year, she averaged 9.8 points and ranked third on the team in rebounds averaging 5.9.

Long was born July 2, 1965 at Johnson City, Tenn. She is single.

1988-89 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PREVIEW Last winter Central Washington University 's

Lady Wildcats won their fust ever NAIA District I basketball championship and qualified for the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City.

To repeat that feat they will have to overcome the loss of four starters to graduation, including District I all-star Kristelle Arthur, guards Lanette Martin and Kathy Alley and forward Natalie Long.

Martin (14.0 ppg) and Arthur (12. l ppg) ranked second and third in scoring and between the four they contributed 44.2 points and 20.2 rebounds per game.

However, seven letter winners from last year's 31-5 club, headed by senior center Sonia Swan (5-10, Tacoma - Lincoln & Green River), return for the 1988-89 season.

Swan, who joined Arthur on the all-district squad, averaged 14.6 points per game to lead the 'Cats. She was second on the team with 8.1 rebounds per game, right behind Arthur (8.4 rpg).

Frederick 's major concern is the ability to replace Arthur. "She played the point in our zone defense on the press and was a key ingredient in our defense," Frederick said. "And it will be hard to replace her jumping ability."

Among the returnees are guards Ellen Kernan (5-5, Sr., Kent - Kentridge & Highline CC), last season's district leader in three-point accuracy (54.2 percent) and Rachelle Arthur (5-5, Sr., Port Townsend), and centers Kris Keeney-York (5-10, Sr., Pasco - Wenatchee Valley), Robin Carlson (6-1, So., Yakima - West Valley) and Nancy Katzer (5-9, Sr., Renton - Lindbergh & Green River).

At guard, Kernan and Arthur will be joined by Highline CC transfer Kathy Brumley, Tabatha Shields from Edmonds CC and a pair of Seattle University transfers, Kajsa Clark and Kris Surratt.

Kernan averaged 5.7 points per game and made 39 of 72 three-pointers and should pick up some of the offensive load. Rachelle Arthur, who averaged 3.2 points in I 987-88, has shown tremendous improvement, particularly with her ballhandling skills.

Brumley (5-5, Jr. , Federal Way) scored 14.8 points per game for Highline and earned second team NWAACC Northern Division all-star honors. "She's extremely quick and could be a vital player in our running game," Frederick said.

Shields (5-8, Jr., Seattle - Ingraham) was the MVP in the NW AACC's Northern Division. She ranked ninth in the league in scoring (16. 9 ppg). "She has the tools to be an excellent offensive and

40

defensive player," Frederick said. Clark (5-4, So., Colville), who scored 2.2 points

per game last year for Seattle, has good quickness and is rated a strong defensive player.

Surratt (5-3, Sr. , Bremerton) played two seasons at Seattle. She also has good quickness and works hard at both ends of the floor. At forward, top candidates include redshirt April Renne and junior college transfers Nikki Pusey and Tina Washington.

Renne (5-9, Jr., Richland - Hanford) played two seasons at Spokane Falls prior to redshirting. She was a first team East region all-star. A tough player defensively, she is also an excellent rebounder and shoots well, Frederick said.

Pusey and Washington both come in with excellent JC credentials. Pusey averaged 12.0 points and 7 .2 rebounds for Wenatchee and was a first team East region all-star. Washington earned honorable mention all-league honors at Highline where she averaged six rebounds per game.

In the post, Swan returns for her senior season after earning honorable mention All-American honors last year. She's a great offensive rebounder. More than half (15I of 275) of her rebounds last year came off the offensive glass.

Joining Swan in the post picture are Linda Laughery (5-11, Jr., Walla Walla), Keeney-York, Katzer and Carlson. Laughery, a fust team East Region all-star, averaged 18.6 points per game at Walla Walla CC and is their all-time leading scorer.

Keeney-York was a key player off the bench on last year's team, averaging 5.3 points and 3.1 rebounds. "We are expecting Kris to carry some of the offensive load inside."

Katzer, last year's Most Inspirational Player when she averaged two points and two rebounds per game, is what Frederick describes as a "momentum changer." She 's very tenacious, is tough on the boards and plays excellent defense.

Carlson (6-I, So., Yakima- West Valley) split her playing time last year between the varsity and JVs. She led the JVs in scoring (14.7 ppg) and rebounding (10.7 rpg).

Carlson may be one of the most improved players. "She's more aggressive and isn't afraid to put the ball up," Frederick said. "She rebounds well and could be the big inside player we need."

Size is a problem for the 'Cats. "We won't be able to get in a halfcourt game with other teams. We'll press and run every chance we get and we play an 'in their face' type of defense," Frederick said. "We have lots of jets, but very few aircraft carriers."
