SCOTTISH 5K CHAMPIONSHIPS (2015)

This is how it works

Clubs organise a 5 km time trial until 31st March 2015.

All trials are in 25 metre pools and can be

swum with up to 4 swimmers per lane.

Times are submitted for collation to determine the

overall rankings and the rankings in the following

age categories:

11-12 years 13-14 years 15-16 years

17-24 years 25-34 years 3 5-44 years

45-54 years 55+ yr (by age-adjusted handicap)

Age at 31/12/15

Medals will be presented to the top three competitors

in the open category and each of the age-categories.

There may be a national final for the fastest open

category swimmers in May. If so, information will be

made available to those qualifying at a later date.

£8 entry fee (£4 to Scottish Swimming, £4 to

organising club).

Instructions for Local Organisers Time trials can be held at any time from 1st

January until 31st March 2015. This may be in a

normal club training session or a specially

arranged session.

Standard forms and more deta i led

inst ruct ions for local organisers are

available on the Scottish Swimming website.

Qualified Swimming Technical Officials will be required

to supervise the swims. Further details on the

requirements for this are given in the detailed local

organiser’s instructions, which must be complied

with at all stages.

The organiser is responsible for sending the cor rec t ,

complet ed results summary, the completed

timekeepers’ records and the entry fees.

Results must be received by 6th April 2015, preferably

by email to [email protected]. Scottish

Swimming portion of entry fees (£4 each swimmer) must

be received by 13th April 2015.

SCOTTISH 5 km CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015

General

Although the swims will be conducted in a pool environment, the event is being organised by

the Open Water Swimming Committee of Scottish Swimming. An event held in 2014 shows

that there is a demand for such an indoor endurance event at a distance beyond 1500m.

The event is open to all members of Scottish Swimming and there is no requirement or

expectation that participants commit to any other endurance events, whether in the pool or in

open water.

Instruction for Local Organisers

Clubs may organise one or more time trials until 31st

March 2015. This may be in a normal club

training session or a specially arranged session. Clubs can charge as much or as little as they

wish but Scottish Swimming requires £4 of this per entry. It is suggested that you charge £8 per

swimmer for entry and retain the other £4 for club funds.

Eligibility

As well as members of Scottish Swimming, registered members of other national governing

swimming bodies affiliated to FINA may take part.

Licensing

Where the only swimmers taking part in the session are members of the organising club there is

no need to apply for an event licence. Licences are only required where two or more clubs are

taking part, in accordance with Scottish Swimming Regulations.

Swimming Technical Officials

Unless agreed in advance of the time trial, it must be overseen by a qualified referee, who must

sign and date the results and give their membership number in the usual way, to indicate that

they are satisfied that the result is accurate and fair. If you wish to discuss using an alternative

senior registered official such as a Starter to oversee the time trial, then contact Kirsty Ewen

well in advance of your event. Such alternative arrangements must be agreed in advance of the

event and there must therefore be sufficient time to come to an agreement. Scottish

Swimming will not accept any last-minute requests, agreements made after the event or if the

agreed arrangements were subsequently not met at the event.

Lane Organisation

• There should be a maximum of four swimmers in a lane.

• Swimmers should start from a push off from the wall at 5 or 10 second intervals.

• Swimmers should give way to swimmers overtaking

• Overtaking should be done in one direction, preferably at the end of the length

• Time keepers are responsibly for counting/timing a maximum of two swimmers.

Stops and Feeding

It is permitted for swimmers to stop in the water and drink or feed (provided they do not walk)

during the event but the timing watches must keep running and stoppage time cannot be

deducted from the duration of the swim. It is advised that timekeepers should add a brief note

to the record sheet at the point where any swimmer stops for water or food, so that the

resulting variations in a swimmer’s lap time can be explained.

Recording Swims

Swims may be undertaken at any time up until 31st

March 2015.

The standard forms should be used. These can be downloaded from the Scottish Swimming

website.

Timekeepers are responsible for counting number of lengths completed. Correct counting of

lengths is obviously very important in recording the correct time for the swimmer. Lap split

times must be recorded at least every 100m, so that cases of miscounting can be identified by

the Referee who is overseeing the event, prior to submission to Scottish Swimming.

55+ Category

In order to deal with the wide range of ages that may take part in the 55+ age category, the

times will be adjusted using modification factors used for the 1500m freestyle in the annual

masters decathlon competition. More details of how these are calculated are available on

request.

Submission of Results

Submissions can be made by email or by post in hard copy, provided they arrive by the due

dates. Submission by email will allow you to keep the originals, in case there are any postal

problems and will also save on the cost of postage.

Entry fees in full (£4 per swimmer to SASA) should also be submitted by post to arrive by the

due date. Cheques should be made payable to “S.A.S.A. Limited”. You should also give an

email address by which confirmation of receipt can be sent back to you.

If you do not receive confirmation of receipt of results or entry fees within one week of

submission, you should email Kirsty Ewen.

You must submit the following:

1) A fully-completed summary of the results in the required format in PDF or XLS (if by

email) or else on paper (if by post). This must be signed by the referee or be with

evidence (such as an email from the referee) to confirm them.

2) A scan of the timekeepers’ record sheets in PDF format (if by email) or else the originals

on paper (if by post).

3) The part of the entry fee (ie £4 per swimmer) required by Scottish Swimming as entry,

(by post), for all entered swimmers.

4) Affix sufficient postage to the envelope. Entries submitted “postage due” will not be

accepted.

Submit entries to Kirsty Ewen. Contact details:

Post: 23 Mackay Road Inverness IV2 4JN
