Dear Friends,

I am pleased to welcome you to the 2018 Auction - Through the Looking Glass. I am hopeful that you are as excited as Courtney and I are to be a part of this year’s Auction. The Auction has taken on many forms over its long history at Moravian, now celebrating its 36th year and in sum raising more than $3.7 million.

Please take the opportunity this evening to celebrate our wonderful and generous community. New friendships will be cultivated and old friendships renewed through this important Moravian event. These benefits are a byproduct of our common goal: to raise funds that ensure our intellectually curious students continue to thrive in the classrooms, on the athletic fields, and on the stage.

This event is also an opportunity for us to acknowledge and celebrate the exceptional volunteerism that we see day in and day out at Moravian. On behalf of the Moravian Academy community, especially our students and faculty, I want to thank Auction Chair, Charlie Trapasso, and our Co-Chairs, Amy Bucher, Tania Marsh, and Christine Mira, as well as the Auction Committee for their vision, creativity, and hard work. This year’s event will be another wonder-filled night that we will remember with a smile for years to come.

Thank you again for your attendance, your donations as sponsors, your auction items and ads, and of course your participation as a bidder in the silent and live auctions. A school such as Moravian Academy is stronger because of its supporters.

Have a wonderful evening and bid often!

Sincerely,

Jeffrey ZemskyHeadmaster

Dear Parents and Guests,

“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice to the Cat. “You must be, or you wouldn’t have come here.” On April 21, 2018 a crowd of “mad” individuals will flock to the Athletic & Wellness Center and step Through the Looking Glass and into an unforgettable storybook adventure. I am extremely honored and grateful to have been this year’s Auction Chair and work alongside so many gifted and dedicated parent volunteers. Collaborative, dynamic, insightful, organized and independent are a few ways to describe my Auction Executive Committee and parent volunteers. Co-Chair Amy Bucher’s creative flair for marketing and her visionary assistance, plans to dazzle us with a spectacular 50 ft. surprise on April 21st! The decor for the evening will be a true testament to the theme of the Auction. Co-Chairs Tania Marsh and Christine Mira’s eye for detail will surpass all expectation. Guests will travel “down the rabbit hole” to a magical space featuring eclectic vignettes, a beer and wine garden, and animated table settings. Evident around every corner will be imagination, creativity, elegance and fun. Our beloved Director of the Physical Plant, Tom Bayliss and his team will bring to life Tania’s and Christine’s imaginative designs. As he heads for a well-deserved retirement after 25 years at Moravian, Tom will be dearly missed. Moravian parent Chef Michael Brack’s impressive and delectable Queen of Hearts buffet will offer a feast that even Alice would enjoy. Senior Alex Ahmed’s impactful and thought-provoking video supporting Fund-A-Need’s request is sure to advance the goal to purchase updated equipment and to reconfigure space so that students can truly explore the wonder of digital storytelling. A new twist to the Sweepstakes prize offers a customized men’s suit by Peg Albert or women’s 5-piece travel ensemble by Karen Hickey. Curious about the Auction items? There will be a variety of interesting and unique items from a simple and lovely bottle of wine from Black River Farms or Tolino Vineyards to something as exotic as the use of the Weiler Corporation Citation IV jet as transportation for six. My Co-chairs and the Auction Executive Committee are especially grateful for the continuing support of the Office of Institutional Advancement, Administration, Board of Trustees, sponsors, advertisers, auction item donors and Moravian families and friends. If Alice had a word to describe the “mad” folks who helped create this wonderful event, she would call them “bonkers,” to which the Mad-hatter would reply, “…all the best people are.” And so, let’s make a toast, bid online, raise a paddle and support Curiosity and Innovative Thinking together on April 21st and join Moravian Academy in its quest to shape the student experience around curiosity and deeply intellectual, personal and lifelong growth opportunities.

Our Hats Are Off To So Many…

Blue Chip Sound, Christmas City Printing, and Green Pond Nurseryfor donating goods and services to make the Auction a success!

Thank you for the amazing support we receive from the administration, faculty and staff of the Academy including:

The Headmaster’s Office, The Business Office, Susan Parent, John Donecker, Dylan Deal and the Maintenance Department

A very special and heartfelt thank you to Tom Bayliss, our Director of the Physical Plant who retired on March 16, 2018: for his tireless efforts in

helping us plan the Auction, for his endless creativity and knowledge of how to make our ideas (and his) come to life, and for his constant “can do” attitude. Most of all, we’ll miss the many hours of laughter and exchanging of ideas that has happened for so many years. As we look around this year, and for

many years to come, we’ll constantly be reminded of the positive impact Tom has had on this school event. We wish you all the best in your retirement.

We are in awe of…

Ms. Sue Maurer, Mrs. Lindsay Woodruff, and their exceptional Upper School art students for creating many art displays for the Auction! Thank you for your excitement and enthusiasm year after year. It is with your help and support that

we are able to feature a part of our students’ talents’ at this important school event. Thank you.

Alex Ahmad, Class of 2018, for putting together the Welcome video for the Auction. Alex’s talent, creativity, and kindess is truly inspiring! Thank you, Alex!

Mission Statement

Moravian Academy is a church-related school whose Moravian tradition affirms that young people best realize their potential in an

atmosphere of love and understanding. We seek to promote the child’s full development in mind, body and spirit.

Since 1742 our tradition has encouraged sound innovations to meet contemporary challenges while recognizing the permanence of basic

human values.

Statement of Philosophy

Moravian Academy seeks to fulfill its mission by pursuing these goals:

• Provide a strong academic foundation in preparation for college work. • Help students develop self-respect, dignity, and a concern and respect for others. • Promote creativity and an appreciation of aesthetic values. • Help students to develop their physical skills and encourage positive attitudes about health and fitness. • Engage students in experiences that will develop maturity, independence, adaptability, integrity, and love of learning. • Help students to become aware of the spiritual dimension of life and further their understanding of the Judeo-Christian tradition. • Encourage students and their parents to recognize their responsibilities in the educational process and demonstrate their commitment to the purposes and goals of Moravian Academy.

Bidding with Text2BidBidding has never been easier with the Text2Bid system. Bidders can bid from anywhere at the event and continue bidding even if they have to leave the event early. The process is simple and easy and allows you to bid, increase your bid, or buy an item outright by using your phone or the iPads at the event.

Prior to the event, bidder numbers will be pre-assigned. Each guest will receive a bid number and help card upon arrival outlining instructions on how to register to begin bidding the evening of the event.

The Text2Bid registration process is completed on your smart phone or cell phone, or on one of the iPads at the Auction.

You will receive a “KEYWORD” that you will text to a pre-assigned number that is exclusive to our event and you will immediately receive a welcome message with instructions and a hyperlink.

If the bidder has a smart phone, the bidder will tap the link and enter his/her bid number. The bidder will bid using the Text2Bid Website.

If the bidder has a standard phone, the bidder will reply to the message sent to his/her phone from Text2Bid with his/her bid number. The bidder will be able to bid on items by texting the item number to bid.

If the bidder does not have a smart phone or standard phone to use but wishes to bid on items the evening of the Auction, iPads will be provided for their use. The guest will enter his/her bid number and first name and choose sign in on the iPad. After bidding is complete the guest will sign out of the iPad provided by an Auction volunteer, but can come back later to check on the status of his/her bid.

In addition, if a guest’s cell phone is not working properly, the guest can use an iPad provided by an Auction volunteer for bidding purposes even if bidding was started on his/her phone at the beginning of the event.

Guests should be aware that if they bid an amount they did not wish to bid, or bid on an item in error, that the process is reversible. Guests can review their bid history and items they have purchased outright from their phones as well as create a watch list for items on which they are actively bidding.

There will be volunteers available the evening of the event to assist guests with setting up their phones and to answer any questions or problems they may be experiencing during the evening of the Auction. The volunteers will be easily recognized by name badges they will be wearing, and they will be circulating throughout the event to assist where needed.

Fund-A-Need ~ Digital Storytelling

What is Digital Storytelling?

Digital storytelling, at its core, is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories both in and outside the classroom. There are a wealth of many other terms used to describe this, such as digital documentaries, computer-based narratives, digital essays, electronic memoirs, interactive storytelling, just to name a few; in general, they all revolve around the concept of combining the art of telling stories with a variety of multimedia, including graphics, audio, video, and Web publishing.

As with traditional storytelling, most digital stories focus on a specific topic and contain a particular point of view. However, as the name implies, digital stories usually contain some mixture of computer-based images, text, recorded audio narration, video clips, and/or music. Digital stories can vary in length, but most of the stories used in education typically last between 2 and 10 minutes. Digital storytelling can be used in all classrooms and with all student experiences at the school. Digital storytelling is a tool in which students can learn, express themselves, and in which faculty can observe and assess student growth.

At Moravian Academy, we currently have an all school film festival each spring, daily and weekly newscasts in our Lower and Middle Schools respectfully, filmmaking and digital media courses in the Middle and Upper Schools. Our goal is to enhance and grow what we already do at Moravian Academy, therefore, our needs include updated equipment and space so that students can explore digital storytelling.
