“NEW MEMBERS,NEW REGIONS ANDNEW CHAPTERSMEANS EVER-MOREINTERESTING ANDEXCITING PLACESTO RIDE”

After the economic turmoil of last year, 2010 has seen more confidence and stability return to Europe, the Middle East and Africa and hasproved a much calmer year for H.O.G.® That confidence is reflected in the strength of H.O.G.membership numbers in our region, now around110,000; in the expansion of the dealer network, and the number of chapters in areas such asEastern Europe and Africa; and a definite focuson H.O.G. as an organisation continuing to meetthe needs of new members in new regions.

Event attendance has been the highest ever, with record numbers attending the many nationaland chapter-level events as well as the majorevents in the Harley calendar such as the Euro Festival, the series of open ‘Harley Days’events and the 19th European H.O.G. Rally inLugano. That shows the strength of H.O.G. as an organisation and the admirable spirit of ‘Screw It – Let’s Ride’ shown by the members.

That doesn’t mean there is any complacency in the H.O.G. organisation. This year we havebeen very focused on looking at just what H.O.G.members want from the organisation to keepH.O.G. moving forward as the world’s biggestand most successful owners’ group. We want to know what new or improved benefits and services will keep H.O.G. fresh and relevant toensure it fully meets the needs of the growing and changing membership.

We’d love to hear your ideas – so much so, thatwe will enter all your ideas into a draw to win afree Life Membership of H.O.G. (or for existingLife Members, a Life Membership for your partneror a nominated member of your choice). Email usat [email protected] and put ‘Future H.O.G.’ in the subject line, and don’t forget to include your membership number. We’llTweet the winner in November so make sureyou’re following us at twitter.com/hogeurope!

One thing is for sure, though; new members, new regions and new chapters for H.O.G. meansever-more interesting and exciting places to ride.Who would have thought a few years ago thatmembers could attend H.O.G. rides and rallies in places like Jordan, Ukraine, Libya and Latvia?Next year, we celebrate the 20th EuropeanH.O.G. Rally in Biograd, Croatia. The Croatiancoast is an amazing destination to head for –and a great excuse to start planning a road trip.

Times may be changing, but H.O.G. has the resilience and commitment to change along withthem, and to stand even further ahead of thepack. It’s all thanks to people like you and theshared passion you have for the world’s greatest motorcycle. Exciting times ahead!

A passion for Harley-Davidson thatoutrode a passion for film has led toLebanon opening its first Harley-Davidsondealership in Beirut.

Awe-inspired by a Harley-Davidson he saw in the war torn streets of early-1980s Beirut, Marwan Tarraf (below)began his love affair with both the bikeand the brand. Travelling to LA in 1992 to attend film school, he soon foundhimself surrounded by the Harley-Davidson culture.

“All I could think about was buying aHarley. It didn’t take long before I investedmy education money into another form ofeducation, and that was it… I had spentevery last penny on a 1991 CustomisedHeritage Classic.”

A producer and owner of an award-winning production house, Marwanfollowed his passion and launched acustom motorcycle dealership in 1996.This September he launches his country’sfirst Harley-Davidson dealership, whichwill also provide a base for the 135-strongLebanon Chapter.

“We’re all about getting together, havinga great time, riding hard and riding safe. This is our Chapter’s creed,” he states.

The launch coincides with the traditionalHamra festival and the parade will departfrom the store location with the HOGchapter being part of the festivities.“People look at me as the film producerwho became a mechanic,” revealsMarwan. “I see it as a promotion.”

Ali Marei, H.O.G. Egypt, always believed that there was more to riding a bike thanwhat he already knew. Withthat in mind, Ali was extremelyexcited to learn that Luis deSilva, National Head RoadCaptain of South Africa, wouldbe visiting Cairo to conduct anAdvanced Skills Course withthe Cairo Chapter. Organisedby the H.O.G. Cairo Chapterand Harley-Davidson Egypt, the dates were set for May 28-30 in the Red Sea resort ofTaba. Fifty-five riders quicklysigned up, including some fromthe Kuwait Chapter as well.

“We assembled at the startof the trip some 460km awayfrom Taba,” recalls Ali. “After a briefing we set off, and for120km Luis assessed how we performed in a formation.”

The group headed for theAhmed Helmy tunnel that linksEgypt’s mainland with theSinai peninsula. “During ourfirst stop there we receivedour first debrief on our ridingformation and tips on whatcould be improved.”

Each stop along the routecame with more advice andbriefing, which everyone tookon board. “We arrived at thebeautiful Taba Heights resortfor a final debrief beforebonding and socialising in the true H.O.G. spirit!”

The next morning the groupkicked off at 8.30am withclassroom training to go overthe course’s key tutorial points:

how to use head and eyeseffectively; how to manoeuvrethe bike and understand theimportance of using theFriction Zone; and steeringand turning the bike in prettychallenging situations.

“Now came the time to put theory into practice as we headed out to the hotelparking lot for extensivehands-on training based onthe theories. Everyone was soexcited to test drive what wehad learned in class!

“I must say that it was hardwork, especially under thesizzling Sinai sun! We spentfour hours testing it all out and having loads of fun aswell. Having finished thetraining we all hit the openroad to practise some more on the bends along thehighway.”

The day culminated with a dinner at Castle Zaman, abeautiful fortress on top of apanoramic view of the Aqabagulf. “We all enjoyed the funand camaraderie that comeswith the unique feeling ofbeing part of the great H.O.G.family! To top it all off, we eachreceived a certificate forundergoing and passing thecourse!”

An early start the next daysaw us all eager to apply ourtraining to the open road…

HARLEY SYMPHONYWhy a Harley-Davidson? A Neanderthal monster? A motorbike for a Terminator?(question from my teenage sonwhen he saw the black denimFat Bob). The idea of owning aHarley-Davidson didn’t comefrom a deep-seated neurologicalconnection dating back to theyears of Easy Rider, but it didend up becoming a reality.

Alright, nothing strange aboutthat. But there’s just one littlething that makes this storydifferent. Biking literature goeson about the sound of the V-Twinand associates it with hard rock,ear-splitting decibels, Smoke onthe Water and all that. Neverwith classical music.

The distinctive noise of the V-Twin has never been comparedto Beethoven’s 5th. The firstperson who did that was mybetter half, Brigitte, who’s aviolinist and has accompaniedthe world’s greatest soloists.

When the Harley-Davidsonvirus took advantage of myimmune system, I starteddragging the poor woman roundall the dealerships in an attemptto convince her that a motorbikewas something beautiful, andnecessary for ‘our’ happiness. But I would never have daredhope that the delicate creaturewould come to appreciate thenoisy, hardcore Harley world.

The strategy was not asuccess. The arguments for not purchasing a bike were so

convincing that my poor braincouldn’t come up with any wayof persuading her that weshould take such a giant leap.

But just as things werelooking hopeless, somethingunexpected happened to bringabout a dramatic U-turn: wewent to our local Harley-Davidson dealership. Brigittewas as surprised at her reactionwhen she set eyes on thesebikes as I was.

First of all, she said that they were the most beautifulmotorbikes that she had everseen: she said they were worksof art, that they had real soul. Then she said that the soundproduced by the V-Twin enginewasn’t a noise – it was music tothe ears. Needless tosay, at that moment, thedeal was done.

Maybe classical musicand motorbikes aren’ttotally incompatible afterall, and maybe there areother Harley fans whoare just as well-versed inthis particular branch ofculture as well. If so, Ivery much look forwardto making theiracquaintance.

Anyway, my thanks goto Harley-Davidson for themetal beasts they make, and thanks to Brigitte: youhave made a dream cometrue for me.

FROM BALEARICS TO BLIZZARDSThis year I wanted to start theseason particularly early, andopted for the first week in March,in Majorca. I took the car-trainfrom Düsseldorf to Narbonne, from where it was onwards byroad to the welcome sunshine of Barcelona. The ferry then tookme to Palma de Mallorca and Ispent an excellent week on thisBalearic island in fine weather(15°C to 19°C).

The return trip on the ferry wasvery stormy. I returned to a rainyBarcelona, where I drove off theferry and northwards; and the trainwas waiting in Narbonne to takeme back to Düsseldorf.

it was 0°C… imagine that in a kilt! The ride took in several villages, including Houten, Oud Dorp,Lexmond and Vianen. Approachingthe village there was a drum bandstanding by and there werehundreds of people along the road, all waving Canadian and Americanflags; simply brilliant, what a treat. We had a 90-minute stop in Vianenso people had time to admire thevehicles. In the village square therewas a tent where live music wasplaying. At every stop there wascoffee for the drivers and bikers, which was very welcome in themorning, on account of thetemperature. There was anotherstop in Lexmond and then fourSecond World War ‘fighters’ flewover, instantly recognisable fromthe sound they made. A nicemoment came when the clock onthe old church struck five and theplanes flew past the church – whata nice touch that was. Altogetherfour Harley-Davidsons took part,1940, 1941 and 1945 model WLAs and one H-D from 1942, a Canadian WLC model.

THIRD TIME LUCKYMy husband and I joined theLyon Chapter at the beginningof September 2008; we had ourfirst outing on the occasion of the15th anniversary of the Chapteron September 15.

A really enjoyable weekend, despite the appalling weather: inshort, I caught the bug – by thatMonday, I’d decided to take theplunge. I wanted to be a Lady ofHarley too!

So I had to take my test, andthat wasn’t easy. Some of thequestions were a bit tricky, but Ihung on in there and I passed my‘rules of the road’ test at the endof October.

That was one hurdle overcome, but definitely not the mostdifficult. Next: the motorcyclecontrol test!

I had quite a hard time, but Itoughed it out. I failed my testonce because of my disastrous

U-turn in the ‘control at highspeed’ section, then we wentaway for a month’s holiday andwhen I came back I hadpersuaded myself to forgeteverything. But no, it’s like ridinga bike – on the second attempt, this time my U-turn was good butI took my time during the first tryand the examiner advised me to‘go for it’, so I did, literally – I wentfor it… and took the slalom postswith me! So, third time lucky…

I should say that I had a good“carrot” to encourage me… I hada magnificent Sportster 1200 Lowin red awaiting me in the garage! I passed my control test at thethird attempt and the traffic ridingtest at the first attempt.

Can you imagine my workcolleagues’ faces (I hadn’t said aword to them) when I rolled up onmy ‘fireball’ on Tuesday morning?

Incorporating the19th annual European H.O.g.® rally

19TH EUROPEAN H.O.G. RALLY & SWISS HARLEY DAYS

Happy Harley Days!

16-23 Rally Roundup:Layout 1 7/22/10 1:11 PM Page 16

The beautiful Lago di Lugano in Switzerland was the setting forthis year’s fantastic European H.O.G. Rally which, for the firsttime, was integrated with Swiss Harley Days.

From July 16-18, the city of Lugano, neighbouring Italiantown of Campione d’Italia and the surrounding area hostedmore than 60,000 visitors and 15,000 bikes. The setting wasthe perfect destination for all those who rode to the event.Snaking through the surrounding mountain passes enjoyingstunning scenery and gorgeous riding conditions, the finaldestination did not disappoint.

The heart of the event, located in the Piazza della Riformawas the focal point for the event. The main stage provided livemusic throughout the event with Swiss rock band Gotthardtaking centre stage on Saturday night. Surrounding bars andrestaurants were heaving with H.O.G. members and Harleyenthusiasts as they relaxed in the Swiss sunshine.

The lake-front Harley Village housed local dealers, H.O.G.

Information and event merchandise, which attracted manyvisitors. The trader area was a veritable feast for shoppers

with Harley-Davidson merchandise for sale fromRoadhouse, sweet stalls and motorcycle accessorydealers as well as demonstrations from freehand pinstriping expert Captain Blaster.

The Custom Bike Show was held in Campioned’Italia on the Saturday, attracting a wide range ofbeautifully customised bikes that adorned the lakesidelocation. Entries from all across Europe provided avisual feast for visitors with a particularly high qualityof antique motorcycles on display, reflecting thepassion of local enthusaists for classic, older andBobber-style vintage Harleys.

As well as many local winners, trophies were alsowon by visitors from Germany, the UK, Ireland, Italyand Czech Republic. As part of the event’s affiliationto the AMD Championships of custom bike building, one lucky winner receives €5,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to compete at the legendarySturgis in 2011. Taking home this prestigious prize for the Best Modifed Harley was Hardnine Choppers

from Switzerland with the ‘DMX’ antique bike. Beautifullyrestored and customised to look like a BMX bike, Danny MX was thrilled to receive such recognition for his work.

Many H.O.G. Chapters participated in the ChapterChallenge with the Roman Village Italy Chapter taking theoverall prize with 116 points. Dani Antonio from the PadovaChapter Italy took first place in the Poker Run with DavidCecchini and Fabio Calzetta, both from the Roman VillageChapter, taking second and third palces respectively. TheObservation Run was won by Federica Rizza with secondplace going to Anna Maria Louato, both from Roman Village.

Prizes were also awarded to Abdul Elah Baghdadi and OmarBaccar from Saudi Arabia for the furthest travelled, and RexMenciassi, 80 years old, for being the oldest biker at the event.

Despite the heat, many took advantage of the availability ofbrand new Harley-Davidson motorcycles and experienced therumble of the V-Twin on a specially designed demo route.Taking in the surrounding mountainous area and lakesideroads, visitors were given a real riding treat.

The parade on Saturday evening was a real highlight, drawing3,000 bikes to the Lugano lake-front line-up. The 7km stretch ofbikes travelled up into the hills, snaking through pretty villages, across the lake and into Campione d’Italia before returning toLugano. Crowds lined the streets, local residents waved fromtheir balconies and children jumped for joy as the thunderingprocession rode past. Lasting almost an hour and a half, participants returned to the main plaza ready to party!

The humid heatwave was finally put to rest as the heavensopened just ahead of the closing ceremonies. Even thunderand lightning couldn’t dampen the spirits of the thousands ofvisitors who partied all night long, enjoying the live music andtremendous atmosphere that is synonymous with everyHarley-Davidson event.

Join us next year as the 20th European H.O.G. Rally headsto Biograd, Croatia to celebrate this milestone event.

There will be bikes in the Balkansnext year as the 20th EuropeanH.O.G. Rally heads to Biograd inCroatia. Returning to Killarney, June’s Bike Fest was again a spectacularcelebration of the passion, enthusiasmand hospitality of the bikingcommunity – a record 25,000 of them!

The component parts of a really goodrally rarely change. Bring enough bikerstogether with some beautiful scenery, entertainment and somewhere tocongregate in the evenings, and theevent will write itself. But when you addto that some remarkable hospitality fromthe organisers, Chapter hosts and thestaff at the Brehon Hotel – specialthanks must go to Breffini Ingerton formaking it all happen – an extraordinarilydiverse attendance and the inimitablelandscape of south-west Ireland, youend up with a bike event that lights upthe whole season.

Now in its fourth year, Ireland BikeFest again added its sparkle to the townof Killarney this June, with a stormingevent that, for the first time, stretched anextra day into the bank holiday Monday.

On Friday, the first of what wouldeventually amount to a spectacularthrong of 7,500 bikes arrived throughoutthe day to explore and enjoy thebeginnings of a blistering entertainmentline-up, including country superstarWillie Nelson and, on Saturday, Brit rockfavourites Status Quo. The atmospherein the Bike Village ramped up too, withlive music and DJs all weekend, while theGleneagle Hotel’s ballroom hosted freelive music every night until late.

Saturday was a day to ride. CelticThunder Chapter led day-long ride-outsaround the Ring of Kerry and the DinglePeninsula. The scenery was breathtaking, taking in mountain passes and skirtinglakes. Expertly organised by theChapter’s Road Captains, these routes

were a high point of the weekend forevery rider and pillion that took the tour.

Sunday’s parade was a fitting apex ofthe weekend. A celebration of everythingexciting about the world of biking, morethan 3,000 motorcycles followed thevictory lap around Killarney, and werecheered and applauded by thousands ofspectators along every stretch of the run.

On return to the site, it wasn’t longbefore machines were lining up on thelawn for the Custom Bike Show. With aneye-popping collection of motorcycleson display, running the full spectrumfrom Rat to Radical, the judges had astruggle selecting the winners. However, the judges clearly had a similar taste tothe rally-goers; Gary France’s lowcustom chopper was awarded Best inShow as well as People’s Choice. To see the list of winning bikes and runners-up, visit the Ireland Bike Fest eventspage at www.hogeuropegallery.com

Of course, the Bike Fest Village wasbuzzing with the usual tenets of a rally – dealer stands (Waterford and Dublin),trader stands and food and drink stallswere a wonderful way to spend somedowntime, while the demo ride fleet and(brand new this year) technical area gavescores of enthusiasts the chance toexpand their own experience of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles.

That evening and throughout Monday, with the milestone events over with, itwas time to relax, enjoy the goodweather and soak up the atmosphere. And, of course, start looking forward tonext year. In total, more than 25,000people came to this year’s event. Nextyear, make sure you’re one of them.

Ireland Bike Fest 2011 will take placeon June 3-6 (RoI Bank Holiday). Keep an eye on www.irelandbikefest.com.

For the second successive year, Harley-Davidson took its place in the heart of theaction at the 2010 Silverstone Classic inthe UK. Combining music and racing, thislegendary event attracts motor racing andclassic car enthusiasts from across thecountry. Among plenty of racing fromclassic cars and motorcycles, a fun-filledfairground, drag racing, acrobatic aerialdisplays and a relaxing atmosphere, therumble of Harley-Davidson motorcyclescould be heard throughout the site.

The impressive Harley grandstand drew many newcomers to the motorcyclebrand, showcasing the latest models in asophisticated expo area, giving visitors theopportunity to try out all the bikes for size.

Fit Shop educated those who thoughtthey'd never be able to handle these bikesby demonstrating how every single Harleycan be truly customised for each individualshape and size – lowering the seat height, bringing the handlebars closer or furtheraway from the rider, and moving the footcontrols to suit different leg lengths.

The Me On A Harley stand – wherevisitors can have their photo taken astridea Harley against the backdrop of theirchoice – was busy entertaining adults andchildren alike during the weekend. If youhaven't downloaded your photo yet, don'tforget to visit www.me-on-a-harley.com.

Harley-Davidson merchandise was alsoon sale as well as the opportunity to take afree test ride on a 2010 model – more than100 visitors took advantage and enjoyedthe 30-minute ride around the beautifulsurrounding countryside.

Unfortunately, the planned WorldRecord attempt for the greatest number of Harleys on a racetrack was postponeduntil a future date.

H.O.G. members and visitors enjoyedthe buzzing atmosphere of The Harley-Davidson Hospitality area by day and by night throughout the weekend, as a DJ and live bands including The Mods,Blues Brothers and tribute act the RollinStoned took to the stage from midday tomidnight. The bar also hosted celebritychef Heston Blumenthal on the Friday as part of the celebrity race event, and X-Factor finalists and competition winnerson the Saturday, ahead of theirperformances on the main stage.

Did you take part in Million Mile Monday?Harley-Davidson staff based at thecompany’s office in Oxford hit the roadwith some very special visitors fromMilwaukee accumulating miles andprompting smiles

EXCITEMENT. ANXIETY. THIS is how webegan. It’s Sunday June 27 in Oxford. It’s a beautiful, hot and sunny day. The daybefore Million Mile Monday. What will theweather be like for the ride we have plannedfor tomorrow? Look to the skies. Don’tdance… it might bring rain! Wish for just one more day like this one, perfect for riding. Cross your fingers.

Relief. Wish granted. The forecast is forclear blue skies and warm temperatures with not a spot of rain threatening to appear! The ride was on – and what a ride it was!

On Monday, Keith Wandell, CEO, and Matt Levatich, President and COO, visitedHarley-Davidson’s European HQ

in Oxford, England. The two were welcomedand introduced to staff based at the Oxfordoffice and H-D® UK dealers by Rob Lindley,Managing Director and Vice President forHarley-Davidson Europe and spent themorning talking with both staff and dealers, answering questions and providinginformation.

Lunch followed the meetings, offering bothKeith and Matt the opportunity to meet theUK team and the UK dealers.

Outside, a fleet of Harley-Davidsonmotorcycles, paint and chrome gleaming in the sunshine and ready to ride, waitedpatiently to roar to life. At 2pm that afternoonthey did.

After lunch and a briefing by Nigel Villiers,Director Customer Experience – Internationaland ride leader for the day, Keith, Matt andRob kitted up, climbed on their motorcycles, turned on their ignitions and set off for a ridethrough the Chiltern Hills from Oxford toCheltenham Harley-Davidson with RoelRietveld, Regional Director for Benelux, UK/Ireland and Scandinavia, Iñaki Isusi,Country Manager, UK and Ireland, members of their team and dealers behind them.

The 60-mile route meandered throughquintessential English villages, featuringthatched cottages and gardens in full bloom, and climbed rolling hills that offered scenicviews of the Oxfordshire and Gloucestershirecountryside. Engines rumbled, heads turned, people gazed, children waved. Everyonesmiled. It was glorious.

At Cheltenham H-D® the group was metby Neil Hall, Dealer Principal, his team of staffand a spectacular surprise – a traditionalEnglish cream tea. This couldn’t have been a more perfect British refreshment with which to greet special guests and wasappreciated enormously by all.

The route back to Oxford was slightly moredirect but no less interesting than the earlierride. What the road may not have offered for satisfaction, thoughts of the day did.

The final count: 17 riders, around 30roundabouts, on back roads with no paint, zero incidents. 2,460 miles in total. Not oneraindrop. 30 scones with jam and creameaten. Smiles too numerous to count.

The highlight of the biking year, European H.O.G.® ralliesattract people from all over. One couple from Scotland chose to make it the location for the most memorable day of their lives

CLAD IN THE vibrant stripes of the Dunedin Chapter’s tartan, H.O.G.Chapter members Maurice Laing (known to friends as Mo) and MaryMcLaren, who met in 2003 and have been riding as a pair ever since, tied the knot in beautiful Lugano, Switzerland during the 19thEuropean H.O.G. Rally and Swiss Harley Days.

Mo and Mary are both members of the Dunedin Chapter and live in Perth, Scotland. When on her birthday in 2009, Mo proposed,Mary was delighted to agree. However, neither of them fancied a big,at-home wedding, so they planned in secret to marry at the rally andexchange their vows in the presence of a few close friends. It seemsthe fact that the event would take place in the midst of 15,000 otherbikers and more than 60,000 rally-goers didn’t really factor in.

Not long into the planning process Mary discovered that difficultiespresented by language and local legislation would be best overcomewith the assistance of a local wedding planner and she recruited thehelp of Rachel Heller. With her help, plans got well under way.

Just before their planned ride to Lugano, Mo and Mary asked their friends Pauline and Alan Gough from Wolfruna Chapter to be witnesses for their wedding. The couple had taken Mo under their wings many years ago when they met him en route to his firstEuropean rally and they’ve been friends and riding buddies eversince. Mo had only recently bought an Electra Glide and passed his test – in that order!

The rest of the riding group headed for the rally were only let in onthe secret when the group arrived in Lugano, but with Pauline in theknow, H.O.G. had the early scoop on the wedding plans.

At 11am on the Friday of the rally, at Palazzo Civico in the heart ofall of the action, Mo and Mary were married. Marjorie Rae and NigelVilliers, Director of H.O.G. International, met the couple afterwards to pass on their congratulations. After the ceremony, the couple and their friends took a boat across LakeLugano to Melide tocelebrate over lunch.

Of course, Mo andMary will be continuing to share their love ofmotorcycling at eventsand rallies across Europe.Next on their list is, of course, DunedinChapter’s Thunder in the Glens.

Look out for them and raise a glass and a cheer. Mo and Mary – congratulations onceagain. May everyjourney you share be full of adventure andnice surprises!

JOINING A TOUR can be one of the best ways to get the most out of motorbiking.Leaving the navigation and route planning to your guides, you’re free to relish thelandscape, the roads, and the sheer pleasureof the ride itself. Two people who know all about this are Dot and John Johnson, members of Geordie Chapter, who run HadrianV-Twin Tours and four Harley-DavidsonAuthorized Tours in the UK and Ireland.

“We’ve always loved touring on Harley-Davidson® bikes and have been to somefantastic places in the 15 years or so beforewe set up the business,” explained Dot. “As time went on, friends joined us and we ended up taking more and more peoplewith us, planning scenic routes and bookinglovely hotels. It just grew from there.”

John has been riding bikes since he was16 and takes his riding skills very seriously. He’s received a Gold Award from Rider’sEdge, advises Geordie Chapter on safe riding and is an observer for NorthumbriaAdvanced Motorcyclists, so his skill on the road is not in question. Dot is very happy indeed riding pillion!

The two have been a part of GeordieChapter for more than 10 years and love

the community of the group. Dot enthused:“We love being part of the Chapter. They’re a great group of people who help andsupport each other, bound together by their love of riding Harleys® and having fun.”This ethos is something they have carriedinto their tours.

At the end of August, Hadrian V-Twin willbe setting off on their tour to Thunder in theGlens, taking in this storming Chapter-organised rally alongside the breathtakingcountryside that lies in between Newcastleand Aviemore, home of the rally. However, they’ll only just have returned from a trip tothe States a handful of days before: “Justtime to get the washer on before we leaveagain!” laughed Dot.

Of course, while the roads of the UK arewell-travelled by John and Dot atop theirElectra Glide Ultra Classic (“the best bike fortouring, in our opinion”, says Dot) the toursoffered by the company are not limited to this small collection of islands.

“We love touring in the USA, especially thewest,” relates Dot. “Germany and Austria arestunningly beautiful and we have a soft spotfor Spain and Gibraltar – we were married inGibraltar – but we shouldn’t take the UK for

granted. We’ve got fantastic riding roads.”The menu looks set to develop into the

future too. “We’d like to set something up for the winter months,” explained Dot.“Maybe in California or Mexico so it’s stillgood riding weather.” As we spoke, Dot and John were in Tennessee, hard at workresearching the area around Memphis andNashville, the Smokey Mountains and the Tail of the Dragon – 318 curves in 11 miles!

With their Electra, as well as a beloved1989 Springer Softail at home, there’s nodoubt that Dot and John are the perfectcandidates to show you more about touringand help you get the best from the areas they visit. Join them on one of their tours next year. Great riding, great people – whatmore could you ask for?

WHAT COULD BE BETTER than a brand-new Harley-Davidson®

motorcycle? One that you get for free, of course! Following his entryinto the national prize draw run from a recent round of dealership-ledtest rides, lucky Guildford resident Trevor Holden recently acquired justthat. Long-time motorcyclist, but never a Harley owner, Trevor enteredthe draw after driving past his local dealership.

He was inspired to visit their website, tried out the new onlinebooking system and booked himself a free test ride on an ElectraGlide® Ultra Limited. Like many of us who enter draws like these, he’d entirely forgotten about it after his ride, which had fuelled hisdesire to own a Harley-Davidson. Then, he received a call from JessicaTideswell, Harley-Davidson’s UK and Ireland Marketing Manager, to tellhim that he could now realise his dream – for free!

“I can hardly believe that I am now a proud owner of a Harley®,” said Trevor. “It has always been a dream of mine to ride a Harley-Davidson since I was a young motorcycle mechanic back in 1976. I would like to thank Harley-Davidson UK. I have now realised mylifelong ambition of becoming a dedicated owner – I never thought I would see the day. The bike and sound is amazing and the staff at Guildford Harley-Davidson have been fantastic in organising thecollection of my new bike.”

“We are delighted to have fulfilled Mr Holden’s dream and arepleased to welcome him as one of our newest Harley-Davidson

owners,” said Jessica. “The demo ride campaign was a successfulcontinuation of a pilot that was pioneered in the UK last year designedto make organising a test ride easy and accessible for both currentand potential customers. The competition marked the roll-out of this facility now being available 24 hours a day, seven days a week,365 days a year.”

So, if you fancy a try on a new or different model, or have a dreamlike Trevor’s, go to www.harley-davidson.co.uk and book your dreambike for a test ride.

GLASGOW’S WEST COAST Harley-Davidson® held a Ladies’ Day on June 26 in conjunction with Breast Way Round andMacMillan Cancer relief. MacMillan offerssupport and help to a huge number of cancer sufferers and the biking community in the area.

Breast Way Round is a charitableorganisation that has held a ride along the

west coast of Scotland for female riders tohelp raise money for Macmillan cancer relief. They love to ride, and they love to be a part of something that raises money for peopleaffected by cancer – something very close to the hearts of many women involved.

Together with the team from the dealershipand Clyde Valley H.O.G.® Chapter they raised£1,072 for MacMillan on the day. Thedealership team launched Harley-Davidson’spink collection and had music and raffles forprizes on the day.

The Chapter layed on an excellentbarbecue (brabecue!) and a lot of the self-defined ‘hairy guys’ put in a special effort tosupporting the event by wearing pink brasand outlandish costumes! Well done to IanVennart who stole the show and walked offwith first prize.

The girls from Breast Way Round werethere for the day too and presented acheque to MacMillan for a staggering£45,000! They did a fantastic job and we’redelighted that they chose to present thecheque at West Coast. Well done everyone!

AFTER A HIGHLY successful event last year, the UK’s Three RiversChapter, together with Meridian Chapter, are re-running their Harley-Davidson® Day at Surrey’s prestigious Brooklands Museum.

The event has an open invite to members of all UK chapters whocan make it on September 19. It will be a chance for old friends to get together and for new Harley enthusiasts to come down andmeet some like-minded people. There will be entertainment, food and drink to sink your teeth into as well as the chance to explore the museum itself.

Organiser Ian ‘Woody’ Woodham explained: “It all kicked off from aride that happened last year. We tagged along with Meridian Chapterand the guys at Brooklands thought it was great and were keen toelaborate on it for this year.”

Brooklands is known as the birthplace of British motorsport as wellas being one of the UK’s first flying schools and airfields. The track was

constructed in 1907 and becamethe world’s first purpose-builtmotorsport venue, seeing manyrecords broken until its closureduring WW2.

However, its legacy as a siteof technical innovation wouldendure as it became the hometo the design and production of aircraft such as the HawkerHurricane and the Concorde.

Closing its factory doorsduring the 1980s, the siteopened the museum in 1987 and continues to showcase the finestexamples in motoring and aviation with its regular exhibits and specialweekend events.

The Harley-Davidson day will take place on Sunday September 19from 10am until 5pm, with admission at £9 for adults, £8 for seniorsand £5.50 for children between 6 and 16. The hard standing for bikeparking will be marshalled, and the entry price covers access to all the facilities at the museum. It looks set to be a great day, not just for Harley-Davidson® riders, but anyone who loves motorcycling.

Since the end of 2007, Gary France has been carefully planningand bringing into being an epic trip across the United States.Spending nearly five months on the road, he will cover anawesome 15,000 miles on his Road King, named ‘The LeadingLadies’. This June, he finally set off. Here’s a brief outline of hisstory in his own words

THERE ARE MANY great things about Christmas – seeing family, taking a break from work, and then enjoying the New Yearcelebrations. Sadly, when the holidays are over, we go back to workand get back into everyday routines. Ho hum. Christmas 2007 wasn’tas simple as that for me. Something was different. My 50th birthdayhad passed earlier in the year and I was feeling it was time for achange. It was time for an adventure.

I’d been in love with motorcycles since my teens, so it only madesense that the two had to be combined, but where would thismotorcycling adventure take me? The USA fairly quickly became thefavourite option. But there were so many questions – what route totake? Should I go on my own or in a group? Would I take my own bikeor rent one? I was determined to make this happen, so I called uponsome of the skills and experiences I had been using in my career formany years. It was time for some planning! In 2008 I spent a great dealof time working away in Moscow and Spain so much of that year was awrite-off as far as planning but the time I did get to spend on planningonly further fuelled my desires to do the trip I was dreaming of.

On a trip to France that I’d joined with Brettours I had made somenew friends with whom I went off to California. We rented bikes andthis proved to be a great experience. I learned a lot about spending along time on the road and even more about riding in heat.

After that trip, what I thought would be one of the hardest decisionsto make turned out to be easy. Would I rent a bike for the "big" trip orship my own to ride? Since I was planning to be away for such a longtime, I found a shipping company, that would collect, crate and shipmy bike to New York and back for a price including all exportformalities and transfer to the warehouse in New York, plus returnexport charges and customs clearance that made the cost of shippingmy bike considerably cheaper than paying a daily rental rate for suchan extended period. I was thrilled to find that shipping my bike was thecheaper option and that my bike and I could do this trip together!

I spent the rest of the summer planning my route in detail, gettingmy head around interstates, turnpikes, freeways and highways. Theanticipation that built from just desktop and armchair traveling fromstate to state was magnificent. At every turn my trip began to feel like itwas a little bit closer, not far around the bend.

At the end of 2009, I had six months to go before I was to set off onthis epic journey I was planning. My preparations were on track, theroute had been decided, all my dates were set, my hotel for Sturgis wasbooked and the bike shipping – perhaps the biggest organizationalchallenge! – was sorted. At home in London, the snow was falling thickand fast, and my bikes were tucked up for the winter. Once again, thetour felt a long way off, but I knew the next six months would fly by.

In January, I nearly got caught out with a visa issue. I’dvisited the USA many timesover the past 38 years andknew that the UK has areciprocal visa programmewith the USA. I figured I wasfine to do this trip withoutmaking any other special visaapplications or arrangements.I was wrong. As I wasplanning to stay in the US formore than 90 days, I needed avisa. Getting one involvescompleting a comprehensiveapplication form and an interviewwith a consular official. Luckily Idiscovered this in time to get allof that sorted. With three monthsto go, I only had to organisetemporary insurance and buysome summer biking boots thatwould do for walking as well asriding. I’d got my satnav systemand had finalised the routesthrough the 23 states I wasgoing to cover.››

The new Harley-Davidson SuperLowmodel reintroduces the pure pleasure ofmotorcycling. Balanced and responsivehandling help rider and machine glidethrough corners with smooth confidence.A low seat height, the broad V-Twinpowerband and clean styling complete an appealing package. The SuperLow is

an open invitation to get out and ride.Comfort is a key aspect of the

SuperLow experience. A new solo seatwith a deep, bucket shape and soft filleroffers good support. The shape of the seatand its 25.5-inch (648mm) height make itpossible for many riders to put feet securelyon the ground when the bike is at rest. A new handlebar is shaped to provide anatural arm position. Dual coil-over rearshocks offer 2.5 inches (54mm) of wheeltravel for a smooth ride.

Several interdependent technical elements

play a role in the vehicle dynamics Harley-Davidson engineers sought to achieve inthe SuperLow model. Changes made totyre size and a new front fork angle givethe SuperLow 5.7 inches (145mm) of trailfor outstanding steering feel and feedbackto the rider.

“In engineering the tyre-and-wheeldesign and steering geometry for theSuperLow, the team applied lessonslearned in the development of theXR1200X, which result in similarlysignificant gains in manoeuvrability,”››

said Jim Hofmann, General Manager,Motorcycle Product Planning. “TheSuperLow is of course a very differentmotorcycle from the XR1200X, with a different mission, but the theme ofachieving a precise balance of steeringgeometry, tyre profile and construction, and suspension tuning is the same andequally successful. It takes just one ride on the SuperLow to believe it.”

The 18-inch-diameter front wheel and

17-inch rear wheel are fitted with Michelin®

Scorcher® 11 radial tyres. The profile, treadpattern and construction of these tyreswere developed specifically to enhance thehandling of the SuperLow model. The newwheel-and-tyre combination significantlyreduces mass and inertia front and rear, which, when combined with the tyredesign, improves steering response andreduces steering effort.

Its low-profile radial tyres, solo seat and

long fuel tank shape give the SuperLow anappealing new stance that’s wide and low.The air-cooled Evolution® 883cc V-Twinengine with Electronic Sequential Port FuelInjection (ESPFI), rated at 55 ft. lbs. peaktorque at 3,500rpm, has a broad powerbandfor easy get-away from a stop and smoothpower out of corners. The SuperLow isavailable in Cool Blue Pearl, as well as MerlotSunglo/Vivid Black and Birch White/Sedona Orange/Black two-tone paint.

YOUR SENSES PLAY a major part when itcomes to updating your Harley-Davidson®

motorcycle. Your bike communicates withyou through all your senses as you ride, but sometimes you’ll want to tweak thingsa little, to make them more to your liking.

So whether it’s the sound from thetraditional big twin motor, the look andstyle you’re looking for in your ride, a

more comfortable seat, a screen totake the weight off your shoulders,a bigger sound from your stereo,or maybe a custom paint option,

Harley-Davidson® hassomething for

everyone.

• For those of you who like to do somereal distances, you may need a biggersoundtrack to your journey. The best way to up-spec your ride is with our newBoom! Audio™ speakers, speaker kits andamp packages. These give all Harley ridersthe best of both worlds. First it offers aBoom! Audio™ package for you, whateverHarley you ride and whether it has asound system or not. While for those whoalready have a Harley system in place, theBoom! Audio™ packages offer betterdefinition and a much better sound thanstandard. Items like the Ultra Boom!Bagger Kit and the Bass Booster Tour-Pak®

Port Kit boost power and give a harderedge to sounds in the lower frequenciesand with less distortion. Meanwhile theiPod Interface allows your fingertips tocontrol your playlists via the stock audiocontrols while your music choices aredisplayed on the radio face. All existingdevices such as our Road TechTM Zumowill sound all the better through thesenew speakers too.

• If it’s comfort you require, then let us take some pressure off you with theHarley® Hammock Touring Seat, or if youreally want to put the spotlight on yourbike, perhaps the engine guard-mountedfog lamps? Or to help you heading in the right direction an Agitator CustomWheel? We’ve got lots of options waiting for you.

• For some, there’s just really no substitutefor a one-off paint job. So how about one of our Colour Shop Limited seriesdesigns? Each is based on a unique themeand guaranteed to make your bike standout from the crowd. How about a

Rocker C in our ‘Devil’s Infantry’ scheme?Where a brilliant orange scorches across adeep, dark black: the look completed by a set of grinning skulls on tank and fender.Or the super-cool ‘Vaquero’, where metal-flake flames cascade from tank andfender? Or perhaps ‘Indulgence’ where –as its name suggests – too much is simplynever enough, so the paint and pinstripesare deeper than the Atlantic Ocean.

And finally perhaps a classic Fat Boy,but in our ‘Turmoil’ scheme, where jet-black bodywork meets flame-orange toleave nothing but chaos in your wake?

HARLISTAPASSION

I WAS THERE to document the world of theCuban Harlistas – the Harley-Davidson®

riders that have kept their 50-year-oldmotorcycles running on little more thaningenuity, determination and hard work. Thanks to Metzeler tyres of Italy andtheir involvement with an inspiringdocumentary by director GuidoGiansoldati entitled Cuban Harlistas, I was invited to join the movie crew anddocument with stills what they werediscovering on film. With new friends

Guido, Vieri, Stefano and Francescomaking the introductions and translating, and Luis Enrique Gonzalez, the presidentof MOCLA (Moto Classicas) bike club andour contact with the Harlista community,I was off on a dream assignment.

At best, estimates of surviving Harleysrange to several hundred on this islandnation the size of Virginia. While theremay be more Panheads, there are plentyof Knuckleheads and Flatheads as well. These bikes were in Cuba, as were spare

parts to repair them, at the time of therevolution in 1959, and that’s that! Nonew bikes, no replacement parts since.Consequently, accompanying everyHarley-Davidson are hundreds of stories. I savoured each (the bikes and the stories)as they are the story of Cuba. They are itsunwritten history.

On the surface, I quickly saw that life inCuba is difficult. Imagine taking your Harleyfor a weekend ride could cost you a month’swages to cover the cost of fuel. ››

50 HOG® autumn 2010

In general, things are run down and much isin need of repair – the buildings, the roads, the cars, the bikes… and everything coulduse a coat of paint. The strong leatheryhands of bikers like Sobrino or SergioMorales that I met and photographed areevidence that life isn’t easy. Like bikerseverywhere, they do whatever it takes tokeep their machines running, but it seemsthe Cubans do more than most, liketaking all day to remake a small broken

part by hand – something you would rundown to your local shop and pay a fewpounds for. That’s not an option in Cuba. And what if you need a new set of tyres?Kudos to Metzeler for donating 150 newtyres to the Cuban Harlista communitythrough MOCLA! Groups like the LatinAmerican Motorcycle Association, a3,800-member club spanning eightcountries, help out with parts and suppliesas they can, but this is also difficult.

Thankfully, I saw another side to life in Cuba. This was the ease with whichCubans laugh and smile and their casualapproach to life. It is life that thrivesoutdoors as friends and neighbours visit in doorways, as they play street stickballbeneath the setting sun, or as dancespontaneously erupts in the street to thesounds from a small AM radio. There istime to visit and interact, time to helpeach other, and time to appreciate every

49-51 Cuba:Layout 1 7/13/10 2:47 PM Page 50

HOG® autumn 2010 51

bit that they do have. Their lives are ascolourful as the colours of the Caribbeanall around them. How different this tripwas from anything I’ve seen in my travels.

To think that Havana is a mere 90 milesfrom Key West is so strange. Most of ushave ridden further for breakfast! So close, but then as a biker and an American, I amaware that few words and images of Cuba’svenerable Panheads and Knuckleheads, northeir dedicated ‘Harlista’ riders, have

appeared in the our media. Fifty years oftravel and trade restrictions have hinderedcommunication. A lack of understandingprevails and, in the end, fear wins.

As a photographer, a journalist’s licenceto travel to Cuba is an option, but thereare few legal ways for most Americans tovisit. Travel restrictions have been relaxedfor anyone of Cuban descent, and as Iwrite, the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Actcould get the 218 votes needed to pass in

the House of Representatives. Changewill come, but I was fortunate to haveseen Cuba as it is. I hope you have similaropportunities to meet these resilient, ingenious brethren with whom we sharesuch an amazing passion. For now, let myphotos be a window into this life, and besure to see the film Cuban Harlistas. ■

India

Words: Mark-Hans RicherPhotos: Amanda Lee, Shige Ambiru and John McEnaney

Most people told us wewere crazy. For some, this is the sweetestmotivation. We werelike that, the four ofus. Just tell us that

something we want to do is hard or‘unadvisable’. Then watch us. The crazything was this: riding Harley-Davidsons tothe Taj Mahal. There and back. One day.

Amanda, Shige, John and I wereemployees of Harley-Davidson – there inIndia for different reasons to help announceH-D’s entry into that new market in 2010.Yet we were from radically differentbackgrounds. As soon as a couple of usfigured out we’d have a free 12-hourwindow on what had been a long andbusy work trip in New Delhi, the peoplewith the ‘crazy gene’ started congregating. We wanted to see the real roads and peopleoutside the conference rooms and hotels. And at the end of those roads was the Taj Mahal.

Those familiar with it say the road fromNew Delhi to Agra is not for the timid, and we imagined few had ever done it onHarley-Davidson® motorcycles. We hadjust enough time to get to the Taj Mahaland back before catching our flight hometo the US that evening. This was our onlychance – one day.

If we planned it right – and none of ushad ever done this before so the odds ofthat were slim – the journey would takethree to four hours to Agra and five to sixhours back. Some said it would take ustwice as long. As our margin for gettinglost was zilch, we hired a car to serve asour lead.

I was the lead bike, followed by Amandaand Shige, with John sweeping. Our bikeswere a Night Rod® Special, a Nightster®, a Street Glide® and a Heritage Softail®

Classic – bikes as different as we are.We coursed through the awakening city

and its suburbs. Vehicles, donkey carts, people and animals shot in front of usfrom all directions. We quickly learnedthat the quality of road was less importantthan what was ON the road. As the leadrider, my eyes were darting to all thepotential hazards, and my arm or leg (orboth) warnings to Amanda riding behindme were like some mad dance in the air.

As we got farther from New Delhi, wefound our rhythm in 50mph speeds onroads that were as well maintained as theroads at home. We were making good ››

time so, at our first gas stop, Johnsuggested we snap photos of the smallertemples we’d seen right off the road.Beyond that brief discussion we didn’thave much time to talk because wheneverwe stopped, there was instantly a mob ofyoung men surrounding us. Shige turnedon the stereo on his Street Glide. Amandaand a young boy shared the internationallanguage of ‘high five’. And some of ushad our first Indian gas station bathroomexperience.

We’d shared the congested, chaoticroad for a couple of hours, and weregaining steadily on Agra. The heat wasrising, and the granules of dirt in the airwere accumulating. Slightly ahead ofschedule on roads better than we expected,we passed under a large sign at 9:45amthat read ‘Agra’.

The gateway to the Taj Mahal was lessthan five miles away! Yet we wouldn’tarrive until almost noon…

Agra itself would become our greatestobstacle. While the image of the Taj Mahalconjures visions of peace, grace, beautyand the height of symmetrical humanartistry, Agra is a town that – at least forthe four of us trying to get quickly in andout on Harleys – was the exact opposite. We felt like literal road warriors as ourpack fought its way through the industrial

chaos of humans, animals and machines, trying to not lose sight of our lead car inthe mess. The first Battle of Agra tookalmost an hour.

We pulled into an open lot about a milefrom the Taj, feeling relieved. Yet we weresoon met with our next great challenge –herds of young Indian guides fightingtheir own battle, for our wallets. Theattention we caused with our bikes – andby Amanda, a shock to them as a womanwith short blonde hair riding a Harley! –felt explosive, like anything could go offat any second. We quickly pulled into the gate of a Westernised hotel.

In the reception area with its whitemarble floors, elaborate fabric wallhangings, and multi-thousand dollarjewellery in display cases, we sat meltingon white chairs with our dirt stains, brownlips chugging the ends of Pepsi bottles.

It was now past 11am. We remindedourselves that we needed to be back inNew Delhi before nightfall, and we knewwe’d have to fight the second Battle ofAgra to do it.

But the Taj was ‘only’ a mile away, andwe were not giving up. We threw ourselvesback into the heavy streets of Agra andfollowed our car to another nearby gatedhotel. Inside the gate, we dismounted andgathered our things for the final mile to

the Taj Mahal, the four of us in a smallgas-powered, three-wheeled taxi.

The Taj was built with huge entry gatesand plazas that surround you and keepthe mystical Taj Mahal out of sight untiljust the right moment. Stepping throughthe red rock gate was like stepping back in time, and we time travellers arrived insweaty Harley T-shirts. The huge rounddome and its spires finally came into oursights. It did not disappoint.

The stark brilliance of the Taj Mahal iswhat strikes you first. The 450-year-oldstructure looks cleaner and whiter than if it were built today. As we got closer to the main dome, we meandered pastgardens and the pools, whose reflection of the perfectly symmetrical white palaceand its minarets drew us toward itspeaceful presence as we tried to capturethe aura through our camera lenses.

We went inside and found starksimplicity: a white marble tomb made for two caskets of wife and baby that felt all of a sudden intimate for such an imposing external structure.

Unfortunately, even in this timelessplace, we couldn’t afford to forget time. It was now past 1pm, and we still neededto refuel ourselves even more than thebikes in preparation for our adventureback to New Delhi. Had we been on our

Australia

It started about 10 years ago, visiting my sister in Australia, driving down the Great OceanRoad; this road is made formotorcycles, I thought. Fastforward to 2010; we were

visiting Australia again, and it just had to be done. We looked into shipping our bike, but it wasn’t practical, so wearranged to hire a Harley for 10 days from Sydney.

There was no need to get used to thehire bike, a Glide Standard with a Tour-Pak, the same as mine back home. Firstthings first, we did the ‘tourist’ thing –rode under and over the Sydney HarbourBridge, taking photos of the bridge andthe Opera House. We’re not big fans ofcity riding so we were glad when we setoff down The Princess Highway towardsMelbourne the following day.

We decided that, wherever possible, weshould detour down the coast road. Wewere rapidly rewarded by the Sea CliffBridge and great riding with regular stopsto take in the views. We stopped at thedealership in Wollongong but weredisappointed in that they had changedtheir name. The dealership used to putFairy Meadows on the shirts but they hadchanged it to Wollongong. The staff in thedealership were very friendly and stampedour Mileage Programme form. They, likeeveryone else we met, warned us aboutspeed traps, and for a country that used torevel in its reputation for being laid back, they have very repressive speed limits.

A good day riding, riding along thecoast whenever practical, we eventuallyfound a motel in Narooma and a goodpub meal ended our first full day onAustralian roads. Driving on the left, with much the same rules as the UK butovertaking on either side means manydrivers hug the middle lane at slow speedsand two cars with cruise control set to the same speed can block the much-too-infrequent overtaking lanes.

A second day of pleasant riding took usinto Victoria to end the night at Stratfordon the River Avon. Pulling into the motelwe found it full of motorbikes and feltlucky to get the last room. There was avintage bike rally in the next town and wespent the night with the overspill, diningin the pub with Bruce, Bruce and Brucediscussing the merits of long-extinctBritish marques, especially the Pantherthat was made less than four miles fromour house in Yorkshire.

Saturday and we were heading for theSerrento Ferry and the Great Ocean Road.On the way we had a typical H.O.G.®

experience; we came across anothercouple on a Glide heading in the samedirection. Naturally, we travelled togetherfor about 30 miles. When we parted westopped for a chat, we wrote their addresson our map, which we then lost when wedidn’t notice that a pannier had come open.

Across the ferry and on to Geelong, only to find that true to Australian custom,Saturday afternoon and the shop wasshut. It was explained to us that all

Australians play sport on a Saturdayafternoon or watch it in the pub.

So, on to the Great Ocean Road.Wanting to savour the road to the fullwithout loads of slow traffic, we decidedto spend the night in Lorne and do thebest bit of road with a clear run onSunday morning. Spending the night in a backpackers’ hostel, sharing a roomwith six other people, was not Margaret’sfavourite experience of the holiday, but itwas something we hadn’t done before.

The stretch of road from Lorne toApollo Bay is what biking is about, greatsweeping bends, great views and a goodsurface, and on Sunday morning, not muchcar or camper van traffic. This is definitelythe best bit of the Great Ocean Road andone of those experiences that is hard todescribe, you just have to do it. Tornbetween the temptation to stop at everyviewing point or to give each bend andtwist full flowing attention, the road won.

Got to admit we were baffled by thesign banning potatoes and potato productsand the one banning cats from viewingthe Twelve Apostles (minus five) and, weadmit, we didn’t even slow down for theCheese Museum at Allansford. The runfrom Warrnambool to Skipton was theleast eventful. Miles after mile, no hills, no bends, no junctions or traffic (and nopolice or speed cameras either).

After a day’s rest in Ballarat, admiringthe waterless Lake Wendouree andsampling the best pie I have ever eaten at Daylesford, we set off for the ››

dealership at Shepparton. Resisting a stopin Castlemaine to compare it with theoriginal that we visited during the Kerryrally, through Bendigo, we intended tocontinue on to Wodonga. One of the staffat the dealership told us we had to visitBright, where his family had a farm. As itwas on the Great Alpine Road, why not.We must admit that, while riding througha forest, we resisted the temptation tofollow the sign pointing to a ‘HistoricTree’, what did we miss? While in Brightwe met a biker who told us he had spentthe night in a very new very posh hotel atFalls Creek where he’d got a puncture andsuggested we give it a look. We enjoyed a run over a very steep twisty road toMount Beautiful (in Australian tradition it is not a mount, but a village in the bottomof a valley). I advise anyone doing this runnot to miss any of the lookouts as theviews are well worth the stop.

The night in Falls Creek, a ski resortwithout snow, was expensive and I didleave my water bag in the freezer, but theaccommodation was luxurious despite the

hot tub outside on the balcony not beingplugged in.

We enjoyed a pleasant run to Wodonga, then through Carryong to Cooma, passinga lake full of trees and being disappointedthat there wasn’t a camp site at Carryong,as we fancied a photo of a CarryongCamping sign. This stretch had a long runthrough mountainous woodland withgreat twisty roads, but nowhere open forcoffee. We booked into a Motel at Coomathen discovered that Margaret’s iPhone wi-fi had stopped working. Another tip;all McDonald’s have free wi-fi – a cheapway to keep in touch while travelling.

The run from Cooma to Canberra had many bikes heading in the oppositedirection, heading to Philip Island for thebike racing, and quite a few police cars aswell. We stopped for a pie in a small townas one does.

Robbo’s H-D at Canberra was by farthe best dealership we visited in Australia. We had a good breakfast in the in-storecafé, while admiring a very large mural. The ‘museum’ of mementos was

interesting, as was the bargain table; thestaff were very friendly as were the twoH.O.G. members we had a chat with.

The run back to Sydney was the nearestto a motorway we saw. The stop atGoulburn allowed us to photograph thetwo-storey-high concrete ram. A sign onthe freeway directed us at Liverpool toSy’s H-D where one of the staff had beenon an H-D course in Holland with a friendof ours who used to work in the Leedsdealership – small world. After a night in Sydney we had one day left with thebike, so we used it to tour the BlueMountains – they weren’t blue and theyweren’t mountains, but as everywhereelse in Australia, they know how to creategreat lookouts. We enjoyed the run backthrough the orchards much morethan the busy road in.

Unfortunately, that was it; 2,342 miles, no mechanicalproblems, no rain, many new friends and a fantastic trip. ■

Café-Restaurant Budde

Hotel Mas Pau

In the Netherlands, BrendyTelgenkamp had a life-longdream of owning a Harley.By opening her ownrestaurant and live musicvenue, and through sheerdetermination and hard work she was able to bring her dream to life. Brendy tells us how she became a Lady of Harley…

“Owning a Harley had alwaysbeen my dream and my fatheronce advised me: ‘Girl… as soonas you can afford to buy aHarley… don’t hesitate. DO IT!’

“Many years ago I passed mymotorcycle test but to be able tobuy a Harley you need to make

some money first, so that’s what Idid. Working in the restaurant andbar business always attracted me.At the age of 22 my husband and Ibought a small building and started

Blues Café DeLantaarn inHellendoorn. Thismusic venue hasnow been around

for 25 years and we held somegreat concerts there; Joe Jackson,Jeff Healey, Walter Trout, JoeBonamassa, Willy DeVille, Level 42,Brian Setzer (Stray Cats), GeorgeThorogood, The Red Devils andmany more. As it usually goes inbusiness, every penny we earnedwent back into the business. Beinga Harley owner seemed furtheraway than ever – it looked like myHarley would exist only in my head.

“Four years ago, our good friendsMax and Ans Middelbosch (ownerof the American MotorcycleMuseum in The Netherlands) foundus a very nice bike. I looked at oursavings and I decided, now is thetime. The Harley I would buy wasa Dyna Glide FXDX 1475cc.

“‘It’s a good bike…take it. Theprice is good,’ Max advised me. So I bought it!

“It took some time to adjust as I was used to riding Hondas andKawasakis, but after one hour I wasbeaming. I was in love with thisbike! Now my hubby and I loveriding through Europe, especially

the French Alps and theDolomites and Toscana area in Italy. Of course, I’m amember of the Ladies ofHarley in Benelux. The ride-outs are fantastic and it’s agreat group of ‘crazy’ ladies.

“Besides organisingfestivals and concerts, we now have anotherchallenge – running theCafé-Restaurant Budde inNijverdal. The opportunity came up about six years ago and I decided to grab it. Situated at the border of the beautifulsurroundings of De SallandseHeuvelrug in the eastern part ofThe Netherlands, Café-RestaurantBudde is a good, no-nonsenserestaurant with a great chef in thekitchen (not me!). As an officialH.O.G meeting point I invite youto stop off and visit us for lunch or dinner. You’ll like it – or I’ll eatmy helmet!

“Visit us at www.cafebudde.nlHope to see you soon. Keep on ridin’.”

If you like the idea of relaxing bythe pool after a long day’s ridethrough the patchwork fields ofnorthern Catalonia, then look nofurther that Hotel Mas Pau.

With four-star facilities and ahighly respected Michelin-starredrestaurant, the Mas Pau offers aslice of luxury and, even better, adiscounted rate for H.O.G. members.

Owner Toni Gerez shares twopassions – Harley-Davidsons andgood food. As a H.O.G.® LifeMember he states: “My dream as a 16-year-old was to own a Harley-Davidson and travel Europe, and this

finally came true in 2001. Sincethen we’ve organised many lunchesand dinners for our Spanish H.O.G.chapters and European members, who all appreciate our good foodand the beautiful surroundingscenery and enjoyable roads.”

His other passion – gastronomicdelights – is served in the 16th-century converted farmhouseadjoining the hotel. Cutting histeeth for more than 10 years atFerran Adria’s famed El Bullirestaurant, Toni certainly knows a thing or two about fine diningand serves a constantly changingseasonal menu in a setting that’s

a cross betweenthe rustic andthe extravagant.

The Crazy BearIn the UK, the Crazy Bear hotel andrestaurant in Stadhampton, a sleepyvillage in Oxfordshire, awaitsH.O.G.® members and Harley riders.

“I bought it 17 years ago – andnow I’ve created a monster!” He isjoking, of course – but you can tellthere is a grain of truth in whatrestaurateur, club owner andHarley fanatic Jason Hunt is saying. The ‘monster’ he is referring to isThe Crazy Bear, the Oxfordshirepub that was the starting point of his business, which nowencompasses this magnificent old country pub/hotel, anotherCrazy Bear in London and one inBeaconsfield, a members’ club inCovent Garden, and an 80-acrefarm and farm shop supplying freshmeat and farm produce to all theCrazy Bear kitchens.

The key to the Crazy Bearconcept – a mix of superb Englishand Thai food in beautifullydesigned, quintessentially Englishsurroundings – is to have “a littlebit of London style in the country – with a twist”, says Jason.

Of course there’s much more toit than that, but Jason is not givingall his secrets away after spendingalmost two decades learningeverything from scratch andmaking all the mistakes possiblealong the way.

Jason freely admits he knew‘next to nothing’ about therestaurant and hospitality businesswhen he started out by buying thederelict, vandalized and boarded-upshell of the old ‘Bear & RaggedStaff’ in the Oxfordshire village of Stadhampton after exiting asuccessful career in the motor trade.

Now the ‘Crazy Bear’ empireemploys 300 people including 40Thai chefs, and has won everyindustry award going, includingBest Thai Restaurant in England,Best Bar, and Best Designed Hotel.“We recently came second in aTimes award for Best Hotel,” saysJason, with a wry smile. “Wewould have been disappointed, except the hotel pipping us to thewin was Claridges in London.” TheCrazy Bear itself is recognised byCondé Nast, no less, as one of theworld’s top 20 boutique hotels.

Jason’s other passion is hisHarleys, and he approaches themwith the same drive and attentionto detail as he lavishes on hishotels. “I first got the Harley bug in2002 when two friends turned upto the Crazy Bear on their Harleysand told me they were riding to theEuropean H.O.G. Rally in Jesolo intwo weeks’ time,” remembersJason. “There and then I told them I would be riding with them, eventhough at the time I had no bike, and no licence to ride one either.”

Typically for Jason, he was asgood as his word and two weekslater he was on the road with hisnew Fat Boy, riding to Italy. “Theweather was like something out ofa horror film,” remembers Jason. But far from putting him off, sincethen he has not missed a singleEuropean H.O.G.® Rally nor asingle European Bike Week, despitethe obvious business pressuresfrom his ever-expanding empire.

“The key is to determine thatyou are going, no matter what, andstick to it, or else you would neverget away,” he says. “That, and

having good people in place to runthings while you are away.”

Nowadays, after a flirtation with custom bikes that saw himinvesting a serious six-figure sum in one bike, then commissioninglegendary German customiserMarkus Waltz to build anotherextreme creation, Jason sticks to pretty much stock – albeitScreamin’ Eagle – Harleys, a Fat Boy and a Glide.

With a business empire spread across London,Buckinghamshire andOxfordshire, Jason spends a lot of time on the move.“Harleys are the perfect wayof getting around,” saysJason. “I have the Glide onstandby at the Beaconsfieldhotel and I can throw a baginto the Tour-Pak and be inthe West End in 20 minuteswithout worrying aboutparking, congestion chargesor traffic.”

And with the CrazyBear empire shortly toexpand into New York,Miami and two moresites in London, wesuspect there may soonbe a few more Harleysparked on standbyaround the world.

Davide de Negri from Italy recountsbringing his 1949Panhead to life…

DAVIDE DE NEGRI lives in northern Italy, close to Venice, thepicturesque Dolomite Mountains and some of Europe’s finest

motorcycling roads. And this fine ‘n’ funky 1949 HarleyPanhead was a labour of love, put together over a relatively

long period. “My bike took about four years to build – a long time, I know, but I was at university and so I hadn’t

a lot of money to spend on bikes!” laughs Davide.By now, you’ll have noticed that radically mouldedand painted fuel tank: and sure enough, the bike

was built around it. “The first thing I bought was thetank. It was a normal black rusted peanut tank. ››

I gave it to my friend Captain Blaster and I told him to do what he wanted with it,”explains Davide. Blaster is one of Italy’s – and Europe’s – finest and best-knownpinstripers and painters.

“I forgot all about it for about twoyears. Then one day I went to meet himat his garage and I found this wonderfultank. It was amazing. He said: “It’s yourtank.” I was lost for words, I just stoodthere looking at it… I can’t explain to you what I felt at that moment.”

The generosity and talent of friendsgets many a great bike project on theroad, but even better things were in storefor Davide, courtesy of his generous dad.

“One day my father called me into hisgarage,” continues Davide, “and when Igot in there I found a ’49 Panhead engine,’48 transmission and a wishbone frame. He told me: “These are yours as a presentfor finishing university.” I couldn’t workout if it was a joke or a dream. But it was real! And I became the owner of a fantastic Panhead.”

So the build began. Davide wanted thefront end looking “as slim as possible” and

picked up some 35mm Sportster forks forjust 16 Euros.

“I found the MCM exhaust on a burnedbike,” continues Davide. “The rear fenderand the front 21-inch wheel come from anEnglish bike. Mr Vittorio, Blaster’s father, made the sissy bar and helped Blasterweld the tank.” The front wheel utilises a mini-drum ‘chopper stopper’ brake, andthe rear wheel is an 18-inch rim wearingFirestone rubber.

Davide made the bars, and tricked out the bike with some nice aftermarketperiod chopper bits and pieces: Andersonpegs, Randy Smith ‘CCE’ valve covers,Chicago Motorcycle Supply kicker pedaland a nicely worn-in Bates seat. Othervintage rarities on the bike include thatS&S dual-throat carburettor and thelights: the front is from a Pontiac car, the rear from a ’30s Ford.

After years of collecting parts andputting the bike together when he had a spare afternoon, it was finally fire-uptime. “I took the bike to my friend Boccinat BCC to mount the primary and startthe bike,” he says. “But when the moment

came, the engine was seized… s**t!“Boccin rebuilt the engine and we tried

to start it but we experienced a lot ofproblems with the magneto.” Luckily, another of Davide’s friends came to therescue. Michele, who lives in Florence, hadrun a Panhead for years with a magneto, and was well versed in the black art ofsetting them up and timing them properly.

So, within a couple of hours, Davide’sPan was ready again. One kick later, andthe bike finally came to life. “We had alittle run to try it,” says Davide, “and itwas the best. My dream had becomereality!” Just shows what you can achievewith some very special friends, a bike-mad dad, some know-how, perserveranceand lots of Italian choppin’ good taste! ■

Becky Tillman,Rider’s Edge® RegionalManager, Harley-Davidson Rider Services offerssome riding tips

72 HOG® autumn 2010

RIDING A MOTORCYCLE is a complex task – certainly more so than driving a car. It takes all of your limbs and all of yourattention. And because you’re physicallymuch more exposed than whenyou’re behind the wheel, the consequencesof losing yourfocus can be thatmuch more severe.

That’s why it’sso important to beboth physically andmentally prepared everytime you ride. There’s no bigsecret to achieving this goal –all it takes is a few common-sensetactics and strategies that anyone canimplement. And it starts before you geton your bike.

Have a plan Keeping your mind on the task at hand(that is, riding safely) often starts beforeyou even get on your motorcycle, with agood ‘ride plan’. This doesn’t have to bean official ‘document’, but simply a clearpicture in your mind about where you’regoing, what roads you’re going to take, and what obstacles or difficulties you may encounter along the way.

It also doesn’t mean you can’t just geton your bike and go exploring. Riding intothe great unknown, after all, is one of thejoys of our sport. But if you’re riding in anunfamiliar city, for instance, you can focusyour mind by taking some of the guessworkout of your navigation. That said, it’s bestto avoid looking at a map or studyingyour GPS while you’re riding. Wheneverpossible, pull over safely before makingimportant decisions about where to turn.

brakes, etc. If the riding position is differentfrom what you’re used to, get comfortable

finding the footpegs when you acceleratefrom a full stop. Know wherethe various hand controls are.And if the bike has a soundsystem, learn the system – andset the radio station presets –before you start your ride.

Taking a few extra minutesto do these things is also a great

way to help clear your head ofeveryday concerns and get your

mind focused on riding.

Stay restedStudies show that drowsiness is a seriousrisk factor contributing to automobile andmotorcycle accidents. According to theMotorcycle Safety Foundation, someestimates suggest fatigue is a factor in asmany as 1.2 million accidents per year, or about 20 per cent of the total. Drivingwhile drowsy is dangerous enough; ridingwhen you’re not fully awake is anotherrisk level entirely.

Factors cited by the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)that contribute to drowsy driving include:• Sleep loss;• Driving patterns (such as driving at night

and/or driving lots of miles);• The use of sedating medications;• Untreated sleep disorders;• Consumption of alcohol.

One group that is particularly at risk ispeople who work at night, or work longor irregular hours. If you’re a third-shiftworker who normally sleeps during the day,for instance, and are planning a weekendmotorcycle ride, consider adjusting the

Pay attention!Staying alert in the saddle

Know your motorcycleIn situations where you may be riding anew bike, renting a motorcycle or riding a friend’s, familiarise yourself with themachine before you set out, as everymotorcycle is a little bit different.

As always, a thorough pre-ride inspectionis in order, but also take extra care to adjustthe mirrors, get the feel of the clutch and

Between the lines

HOG® autumn 2010 73

times you’ll be riding. Don’t start riding at an hour when you normally would begoing to bed. Get at least some sleep firstand plan to start your ride later in the day.

Warning signs that you’re becomingover-tired while riding include:• You continually drift off your intended

path of travel;• You can’t remember the last few miles;• You miss turn-offs and make wrong

turns (more than once);• You can’t stop yawning;• You have trouble keeping your eyes

on the road or have moments whereyou lose focus.

If you begin to experience any of the abovewhile riding – or otherwise realise thatyou’ve become too tired to ride – stop. Ifnearing the end of the day, find a place tostop for the night as soon as possible. If youhave miles to go before you can stop foran extended period, find a place to pull over, rest, refresh yourself. Take a nap if possible.

It’s also important to maintain yourenergy levels and stay hydrated. Eat good, nutritious foods and drink plenty of fluidsduring long rides. Take frequent breaks towalk around, loosen your legs, or even dosome simple exercises. Wear the propergear for the weather. Stay warm in thecold and cool in the heat. But keep inmind that the wind you experience whileriding contributes to dehydration. This isanother good reason – in addition topreventing sunburn and guarding againstabrasion in the event of an accident – tokeep your skin covered, even when it’swarm out. Remember: The morecomfortable you are in the saddle, theeasier it is to stay focused on riding safely.

Riding a motorcycle is a physical activity

– much more so than driving a car. Stayingin shape with a regular exercise programmewill also go a long way towards fendingoff fatigue on motorcycle trips.

Stay off the phoneMobile phone use on a motorcycle is problematic for a number of reasons –many of them quite obvious. However, even if you have a Bluetooth device inyour helmet that allows you to talk on thephone while you ride, it’s best to pull overto make a call.

Choose your battlesExcessive emotions, especially anger, canblind you and keep you from thinkingclearly. That’s one reason road rage can bea deadly enemy of two- and four-wheeledmotorists alike – and I don’t just mean theother guy’s rage. As human beings, we tendto think we’re always in the right whenthere’s a conflict on the road. But if you’reon a motorcycle facing off against a car, pickup, van, or truck, it doesn’t matterwho’s right – because you’re going to lose.

One of the most important riding skillsyou can have is the ability to swallowyour pride and cede the right-of-way tosomeone who may not be entitled to it.Motorcycles often don’t get the respectthey deserve on the road, and if you wantto fight the good fight for motorcyclists’rights when you’re off your bike, morepower to you. It’s a worthy cause, and I support you in that effort.

But when you’re on the road and in the heat of the moment, the best thingyou can do – for your own safety and the benefit of riders everywhere – is let it go. That’s often easier said than done, I understand, but it’s an ability worth

developing. Staying angry can cloud your judgment in a big way.

If you need a few minutes to calmdown after an unfortunate incident, pullover somewhere safely, get off the bike, and get it out of your system. Phone afriend. Think happy thoughts. Whateverit takes to get you back to that place youwere before: having the time of your lifedoing your favourite thing, riding yourHarley-Davidson® motorcycle.

Keep a clear headI hope it goes without saying that drinkingand riding don’t mix, but I’ll say it anyway, just to be sure: If you’re going to be drinking, don’t ride (or drive). But alcoholand illegal drugs aren’t the only potentialproblems.

Many prescription drugs, or even over-the-counter medications, can causedrowsiness. Some even include specificwarnings about driving or operatingmachinery while taking them. Warninglabels, by their nature, err on the side of caution, and everybody responds tomedications differently. So I’m not goingto tell you to never ride when you’retaking such a medication; just make sureyou’re familiar with its effects beforegetting on your motorcycle.

Listen to your friendsFinally, pay attention to people you trust when they bring your attention to a potential issue. When we’re tired, or outof sorts, or (especially) have had too muchto drink, we don’t always recognise it inourselves. When a friend tells you thatyou don’t seem quite yourself, take theirword for it. It’s better to make a tough decision to postpone your ride for anotherday than it is to make a decision thatcould wind up keeping you off the roadfor a lifetime. ■

The ride from the UK to St-Tropez should be on everyone’s list of must-rides; beautiful scenery, amazing roads and great places to stay. But, asZoë Francis-Cox recalls, it’s only great if the weather is on your side

St-Tropezto

The long way

With six successful and thoroughlyenjoyable long road trips under our belts,it was probably about time we realisedhow spoiled we’d been. OK, we’ve all hadthe odd day of rain; it’s always nice tomake use of the expensive waterproofsand touring bag covers just the once, andall is soon forgotten when the next dayawakens to glorious sunshine.

Our group of six made the ride to theHarley-Davidson Euro Festival in St-Tropezin 2008. We had the best time. Gorgeousroads, beautiful weather, and incredibly

high spirits. This year we were seven, with three new faces in the group. Weagreed that St-Tropez should, once again,be our destination, but this time we’d takethe long way round and incorporate someof the best roads we’d since discoveredfurther east.

The overnight ferry from Harwich toHook of Holland meant we could dropdown through Belgium and Luxembourgrather than blast through northern France. We disembarked to heavy rain. The wholeride south into Luxembourg was diverted

to the motorways where we rode in thespray, dodging the lorries. Not to worry. Itcould only get better, and it was only dayone of the trip. Tomorrow will be sunny!

We were eventually blessed later thatafternoon with dry conditions and someblue sky as we snaked through the prettyLuxembourg countryside ducking in andout of Germany across the border. I spoketoo soon – my Fat Boy began spluttering…had it got that wet? We limped to ourhotel – an old monastery in Vianden. This is a really pretty town and well

the motorway and headed for NapoleonRoute (N85) south of Grenoble for lunch. It was nearly 2pm when we made thispoint, having ridden solidly for two and ahalf hours in the cold, heavy rain. A notefor riding in France – restaurants close at2pm. Our much-needed lunch break wasspent in a supermarket coffee shop.

That afternoon, we entered the FrenchAlps. Set to ‘fastest route’, Daniel (theZumo 660) took us off the N85 and acrossmountain passes that would have beentruly glorious in fine weather. Wecontinued to endure the misty rain andfog and, eventually, we made our nextdestination, Le Mas St Joseph nearSisteron. The accommodation was veryquirky – we had an old baker’s oven inour bedroom – and the views across theAlps, I imagine, are stunning in the sun.

The following morning we made abeeline for Grimaud to the Euro Festivalevent. Ironically, it stayed totally dry forthe duration of this 100-mile ride, and, with our destination in sight, the pacepicked up and everyone seemed to getright into the swing of the Alpine bends!

We made it and we all prayed that theride home, at least, would be dry. We wouldbe here for three nights to enjoy this coolevent. Euro Festival is synonymous withthe sun, the sea and beach – thankfully, the sun made a few appearances duringthe weekend and the attendance was arecord-breaking 9,000 visitors.

Bikes washed, waterproofs hung out todry, the next three days were spent chillingin this beautiful part of southern France.Amongst the music, bars and shopping,we spent the weekend admiring theamazing custom bikes; riding around thearea (in the dry!); supping rosé in St-Tropez;and, of course, taking part in the parade.

We departed Sunday lunchtime in clearskies. As we headed north via Draguignanto the N85, the clouds returned. Determinedto maximise what was left of our trip, weopted to stick to the planned route andvisit the Gorges de Verdun, and it waswell worth it. Around the corner fromeach breathtaking view was yet another, even more spectacular view. Our plannedovernight stop was just south of Gap in atiny village called Jarjayes. And we werestaying in yurts – Mongolian tents. Theaccommodation was not entirely apt forthe weather conditions, but we all loved it just the same.

The next morning we awoke to cloudybut dry weather. We did, at least, manageto take some photos before we left. Wecontinued on the N85 to Grenoble. We

were reminded why we embark on theseadventures and all enjoyed a great ridethrough the snow-capped mountainsbefore finishing the day on the motorwaynorth to Dijon. Our accommodationtonight was at an old abbey. As we exitedthe main road in search of the Abbaye dela Ferte, we were excited at the possibilityof completing a rain-free day. We spoketoo soon. We were greeted, just 5km fromour destination, with thunder, lightningand hail. We were getting used to thisnow. By the time we parked up, thestorm had passed, and scorching sun wasbeating down on us. Laughingly we hungeverything out to dry and headed out fordinner in a nearby lakeside restaurant.

Today we were heading north via Chalons en Champagne. Today turnedout to be the worst day of the entire trip.It rained torrentially from the moment we left until the moment we arrived atour B&B near Reims. Cold and wet, wecelebrated our ‘last supper’ as a group and reflected on the trip.

Looking back, it was a great trip and wehad a thoroughly memorable time. But Iknow how much better it could have been, had Mother Nature been on our side. All I can say is ‘bring on the next one’! I willcertainly be doing this trip again. Note toself: check the weather forecast and, if it’sgoing to be wet, don’t even begin to packthe panniers. ■

ON ENTERING their impressive warehouse in Gloucester, it’s clearthat something is going on. “We’re getting ready for the Harley-Davidson Euro Festival event in the Golfe de St-Tropez,” explainsDirector Tony Davis. “We have five trucks going down there, and not just transporting bikes.” As well as the fleet of 28 demobikes, We Move Bikes will be taking the show furniture, not tomention 15 customer bikes.

Fellow Director Paul Lusty, Tony and their team pridethemselves on their fine reputation. “We love bikes, so it’simportant to us that all the bikes we store here are kept in tip-topcondition. We have a full-time Harley-trained technician whoservices the bikes in our workshop, plus we have an internal

valeting bay.” This is something Harley-Davidson Europe clearlyfinds appealing. “This year we have two new trailers, which areall styled with Harley-Davidson branding, and two in our owncolours.” The Demo Experience wording on the sides of thetrailers certainly make a statement as they thunder across Europe. One of the demo trucks tours Eastern Europe from March untilSeptember and carries a further 23 bikes. “This truck has its ownwater and jet wash for cleaning the bikes and an office for bookingthe demo rides. It’s a powerful way to promote the brand.”

Harleys of all shapes and sizes are being loaded into speciallydesigned cradles before being carefully placed on the trailer usinga forklift. “We’re responsible for all of Harley-Davidson Europe’s

company-owned bikes,” says Tony. This includes the demo fleetthat visitors to European events can take advantage of to test ride.

Despite 28 new bikes being prepared for the St-Tropez event, the warehouse is still full of Harleys! “The warehouse can hold a maximum of 140 bikes in cradles, stacked four bikes high,”says Tony. “We also manage the UK press fleet and the Rider’sEdge bikes,” he adds, but it doesn’t stop there. I spy a radicallycustomised Harley-Davidson being loaded on to the lorry withextreme care – surely not a demo bike? “That’s a customer’sbike,” smiles Tony. “Some people just don’t have time to ride toan event so we take their bikes for them and they fly down andmeet us. Some customers then ride them home, others are putback on to the truck for the return journey.”

WMB offers a very personal service for customers. “We askthe customer to take their bike to their local dealer. We collectand return it there. At the event we have a central collection

point where the customer can come and get their bike.”WMB knows how much its customers love their motorcycles:

“We’re bikers ourselves so we understand how important it is forour customers to have confidence in us to transport their prideand joy across Europe.”

H.O.G. members are entitled to a discount as well as groupbookings and multi-trip reservations, explains Tony. “We willbasically take any bike anywhere in Europe. We don’t shipglobally, we don’t really have any expertise in shipping, but we do in transportation in Europe. We want to be very good at what we do.”

So, if you want your Harley transported in safe hands, youknow who to call!

AS THE CROW (or Sky Cycle) flies, it’s justover 250 miles from Butte, Montana tothe Snake River Canyon in Twin Falls,Idaho. But for Robert Craig ‘Evel’ Knievel, getting from one place to the other was along, unlikely and painful journey.

No one knows exactly when EvelKnievel performed his first major stunt.According to local legend, while workingfor a copper mining company in Butte, heperformed a wheelie using a large piece of earth-moving equipment, took out apower line, and left his hometown in thedark for several hours. He may have beeninspired by seeing the Joie ChitwoodAuto Daredevil Show at age eight. Years later, he said that’s what sparkedhis interest in derring-do.

Knievel was a gifted young man by anystandard. As a newsboy, his knack for

exaggerating the day’s headlines helpedhim outsell the competition. He alsoshowed superb athletic skills. In his earlyadult years, he excelled in skiing and polevaulting, and later founded a semi-prohockey team called the Butte Bombers.

Knievel’s first motorcycle jump came in 1965 in Moses Lake, Washington, where he jumped a Honda 350 about 40 feet across a box of rattlesnakes andtwo mountain lions. The jump came upjust short and the motorcycle’s rear wheelbroke open one of the snake boxes. “Allthe people ran like hell,” he recounted,“and I was on a motorcycle, so I just gotthe hell away from there.”

The next year he played the WesternUS in a travelling show he called ‘BobKnievel’s Motorcycle Daredevils’. Withhis publicity and showmanship skillsalready honed, Knievel was responsiblefor all aspects of the show, and quicklylearned how even unintended events, such as his injuries, boosted post-eventpublicity.

Motorcycle daredevils had been aroundfor decades. Early stuntriders most oftencrashed through flaming walls or jumpedthrough fiery hoops. Other acts included‘wall of death’ feats of riding nearlyhorizontal on a steeply banked circularwall. But Evel Knievel single-handedlytransformed the sport by combiningpublicity genius with raw nerve andattempting jumps previously unimagined.

With his jump of the fountain at Caesar’s

Palace on New Year’s Eve in 1967, Knievelskyrocketed into superstardom. Thedistance alone, 141 feet, would have beenenough to garner attention, but the jumpis mainly known for its disastrous landing.Knievel came up short on the ramp andspent the next 29 days in a coma withmore than half a dozen broken bones.

Evel signed with Harley-Davidson as hisofficial sponsor in 1971, using the relativelynew XR750® flat track racer as his mount. He felt the patriotic theme of his act called for an American manufacturer andsponsor. Knievel would remain with

Harley-Davidson until his final jump, and his XR750s became known for theirtrademark red, white, and blue paint, aswell as the $100 bill beneath the clear coat on the gas tanks.

In 1974, Evel, with his one-of-a-kind,rocket-propelled ‘Sky Cycle X2’, finallyput the necessary pieces together to jumpIdaho’s Snake River Canyon. The jump, something he had dreamed of since hisCaesar’s Palace days, failed due to the

accidental deployment of the parachuteon takeoff. But the event was a publicitysensation, earning him the only SportsIllustrated cover appearance by amotorcycle stuntman.

Most sports experience majortransformations, but they typically resultonly after multiple people spend years ordecades hard at work. With motorcyclejumping, one man took things fromcounty fairs to entirely new heights

in a few short years. Long after his finaljump in Chicago (over sharks) in 1977,popular culture reverberated with echoesof Evel Knievel. ■

The exhibit ‘True Evel: The AmazingStory of Evel Knievel’ will be featuredat the Harley-Davidson Museum®

until September 6. Check www.h-dmuseum.com for details.

“I think it’s better to risk my life and to be a has-been than to never have been at all. Eventhough crippled and busted in half, it’s better to have taken a chance to win a victory or suffer a defeat than to live like others do who will neverknow victory or defeat because they haven’t hadthe guts to try either.”Evel Knievel, Sports Illustrated, September 2, 1974

SO, THERE WE WERE, sitting under a palmtree in Cyprus when I had a call on mymobile from Brettours saying I’ve won aholiday! Well, after wondering if it wassome kind of joke we said yes, of coursewe will be there.

Leaving home at 3.45am we arrived inDover Docks at 6am and met the rest ofthe group. During breakfast on the ferrywe soon learnt a little about each other, a little more about the tour and that most people travel to Dover and stay the night before an early start.

Arriving in Calais, we headed deeperinto France. It was here that we started to notice how much time and effort Ron Brett, the tour organiser, had put into preparing this tour using his localknowledge and sheer enthusiasm – hisfluent French also helped. Brettours had

certainly done its homework.Through the hills and forests of the

Ardennes, we travelled to the town ofDinant. Following the River Meuse along a huge valley, we rode into the centre oftown to our waterside hotel. A few drinksand a great dinner followed – a welcomestop after a long day.

The next day we passed through thetown of St Herbert where hunts leave to pursue wild hogs. We hoped theymeant the four-legged variety. Now intoLuxembourg, we stopped to sleep in thebeautiful old town of Vianden. The hotelwas quaint with a superb menu andexcellent wine list, which we had a great time in sampling.

This town is set in a valley and is verypopular with all types of bikers. There’s aspooky-looking chateau perched at the

top of a cliff and a chair lift, which takesyou to the summit for spectacular views.

On the third day we rode into Germanythrough the city of Trier and rows uponrows of grapevines clinging to themagnificent mountainsides. After awelcome reception at a local Harley-Davidson dealership, we stopped for themost succulent steak I’d ever had. Delicious.

On the last day we headed back toFrance for our last night where yet againthe food was fantastic.

We all made it home safely, clocking up1,028 miles, and really enjoyed ourselves.Ron Brett really knows his trips inside out.The riverside rides, picturesque countrysideand quaint old villages and towns made thetrip what biking is really about.

Well done Brettours and thank youHOG magazine for a fantastic prize. ■
