EachyearIsitdownandtakeamomenttothinkabouttheyearthathasspedbyonceagainatlighteningspeed.HereIamagainwritingtheforewordfortheAnnualReportoftheEuropeanHandballFederationandIfeeltrulyhonouredtodoso.Thereissomuchtoreminisceupon:themagicmoments,thechallengesandthedevelopmentsinoursport.Itseemsthateachyeargoespastquickerandquicker,isfullerandfullerandprobablythethingthatmakesmemostproud;eachyearismoreandmoreexciting.

Whatit’sallaboutTheEuropeanHandballFederation’scentralgoalanddutyistoguaranteethecontinueddevelopmentofhandballonthecontinentofEuropeandtoactasthelinkinthechainforallmembersoftheEuropeanHandballFamily.TheEHFisanorganisationwiththeunderlyingprincipleofservingthesportofhandball.

Handballisasportofrapiddevelopment;nobodycanargueaboutthefactthatwehaveseenmanydynamicchangesovertheyears-2006wasnodifferent.Itisperhapsmerelyasymbolic(andsentimental)milestonethat15yearsofEuropeanhandballwerecelebratedinNovemberof2006,yetitseemsquitefittingthatthefocusoftheactualbirthdaycelebrationswasonthefutureandthefuturestrategyforthesport.

ThehandballnetworkDespitetheeverincreasingdimensionsofEuropeanhandballandthegrowthofthesport,itisoftensaidthatthereisafamilyatmosphereinhandball.IgotomanyeventsandneverceasetobetouchedbythepeopleImeet,theircommitment,professionalism,passionanddevotiontothesport.Itissomethingthattakesmeabackeachtime.

Overthepast15yearstheeventcompendiumoftheEHFhasexpandeddramaticallyandishugelydiverse.Ihavedecidedtotakealookatjustafewareasofourwork,whichhavelefthappymemoriesformepersonally,asPresidentoftheEuropeanHandballFederation

TheyeargotoffwithabangTheyearstartedwiththeMen’sEuropeanChampionshipinSwitzerland.Thiswasthe7thMen’sEuropeanChampionshipandthebiggestever.Thedevelopments,whichhandballhasundergone,werecleartoseeandtheeventdimensionswerehuge,whichgaveeverybodyinthearenaaspecialfeeling-justhowitshouldbe.Thefiguresspokevolumesaswell.Again,InfrontSports&Media,thelongstandingpartneroftheEHF,onlyspokeofrecordsfollowingtheevent.NewrecordsinTVcoverage,viewersandwebsitehitswereallclockedup.Eventstandardswereset,whichhavesetanewprecedentforhandball.Icanonlyassureyouthatwewillcontinuealongtheselinesandnotstopinoureffortstobetterhandball.

Theyearwentoutwithabangtoo,thistimeitwastheturnofthewomenandtheWomen’sEuropeanHandballChampionship.Theycontinuedwherethemen’snationalteamsleftoff–withatopclassevent,greatatmosphereinthehallsanddynamic,firstclasshandball.

ThecatalystsAteachevent,Iamamazedagainandagainabouttheskillofthecatalystsofoursport,theplayers.ThiswasnotjustprovedtomeatthetwoseniorEuropeanChampionships,butcontinuouslyoverthecourseoftheseasonintheEuropeanclubcompetitions.

DespitethefactthatthisAnnualReportisactuallyalookbackatthepastyear(2005/2006season),Iwouldliketotakeamomenttolookforwardandtalkaboutthe

presentseason(someresultsareincludedonpage24).TheEHFplacesgreatimportanceontherelationshipwiththeclubsinEurope,whichworksohardatgrassrootsleveltodevelopandpromotehandball.The“newlook”ChampionsLeague,withitsfreshandunifiedapproach,isahugestepforEuropeanclubhandball.Againwecantalkaboutrecords–TVfiguressayitallandhandballhasneverbeensopopular,butitsnotjustaboutthefigures,itsaboutthesportandthisyearIfeelwehaveturnedacornerandenteredanewdimension.ThisisonlypossiblewhentheEHFhassuchacloserelationshipwiththeclubs,isinconstantcontactandneverrestinitsendeavourstoachieveacommongoal.

WorkingtogetherJustastheEHFmeetsandconsultswiththeclubsofEuropeonaregularbasis,therelationshipwiththeMemberFederations,isjustofimportance.TheyarethekeylinkbetweentheEuropeangoverningbodyandtheindividualsinvolvedinhandballonanationallevel.2006wasnodifferentinthefactthattheEHFensuresthatthereareregularmeetingswiththeMemberFederations,withtheemphasisoncommunicationandtheexchangeofinformation.Onehighlightofthesport-politicalyearwastheCongressinPortugal.Organisedtoperfection,itprovidedtheperfectsettingtodefinethestrategicpathoftheEHF.Communicationisacontinuousprocessand2007willbenodifferent,theEHFwilldoitsutmosttorepresenttheinterestsofitsmembersbothinEuropeandontheglobalstage.

Iwouldalsoliketoofferawarmwelcometothreenewmembers,wenowhave49membernationsandoneassociatedmember!WewelcomedMonacoattheCongressandthenshortlyafterwards,followingpoliticalchangesinsouthernEurope,SerbiaandMontenegroasmembersintheirownright.

AllaboutpartnershipTheEHFwouldnotbewhereitistodaywithoutitsstrongrelationshipwithitspartners.InfrontSports&Media,withitslongterminvestmentintheEUROevents,adidasasclothingandequipmentsupplier,Nijhaprovidingstate-of-theartgoals,Gerflor,withitsextendedpartnership,providingthetrademark“yellowandblue”EUROflooringsystemandnowtheChampionsLeagueflooraswell,thenwehaveanewChampionsLeaguepartnerSPORTFIVE.TheyhavestatedtheirfirmsupportforthemarketingandpromotionoftheMen’sChampionsleague.Weareproudofthefactthatweworkwithsuchhigh-classpartners,whoguaranteeeventstandardsandmanagement.

TheHandballeuro06tookplaceinSwitzerlandfrom26January–5thFebruary2006.Itwasthefirstbighandballhighlightoftheyearandattractedmoreattentionthaneverbefore.FrancetookthecovetedtitlehomeforthefirsttimeinChampionshiphistory,withaconvincingvictory,inapackedstadiuminZurich,againstWorldChampionsSpain.Thesuccessofthistopeventwasnotonlyunderlinedbythehigheventstandardsbutalsobythefigures.

ItwasthemostextensivelycoveredandviewedtournamentinthehistoryoftheMen’sEuropeanHandballChampionships.Morethan760millioncumulativeviewersfollowed707hoursoftelevisedeventcoverage.Thechampionshipwastransmittedbycloseto120televisionandradiobroadcastersworldwideandbenefitedfromapproximately800accreditedjournalists,photographersandtechnicianstodeliverrecordmediacoverage.

Theofficialtournamentwebsite,www.euro06.com,whichwasjointlyprovidedbytheEHF,theSwissHandballFederationandInfront,providedfanswithextensiveinformationabouttheevent,participatingnationsandplayers.Itreceived74.6millionpageimpressionsfromthebeginningofJanuarythrough5February.Theresultmorethantripledthosecomparedtothe2004eventwebsite–anothertournamentrecord.

The2006Men’sEuropeanChampionship,heldinSwitzerlandinJanuary,turnedacornerandsetaprecedentforinternational,indoorsportingevents.TheEHFwillcontinueitsworkwithitspartnersonalong-termbasistoencompassthe2008and2010EuropeanChampionshipstoreachevengreaterheights.

The2006Men’sEuropeanChampionshipcametoaspectacularfinishonthe5thFebruary2006withFrancetakingtheEuropeanChampionshiptitle.Infrontofacapacity

crowdintheHallenstadioninZurich/SUI,FranceclaimedtheirveryfirstEuropeantitlewithanimpressiveandclearvictoryoverthecurrentworldchampionsSpain.Onceagain,anEHFEuroeventhasbrokenrecordsinallareas.Over60countriesfollowedtheeventviatheserviceprovidedby56televisionand17radiobroadcasters.Theofficialeuro06websitesawa60%increaseofusersincomparisontotheEuro2004figures.

2007 Men’s World ChampionshipInadditiontoGermanyastheorganiser,thetopthreeteamsatEURO2006havequalifiedautomaticallyforthenextWorldChampionship:Spain(hasanautomaticplaceasdefendingChampion),France,Denmark,andCroatia.

2008 Men’s European ChampionshipTheteamsranked1-5attheEURO2006qualifiedforthenextEuropeanChampionship:France,Spain,Denmark,CroatiaandGermany.The8thMen’sEuropeanChampionshipwillbeheldinNorwayfromthe17th–27thJanuary2008.Naturally,Norwayastheorganiserhasafixedplaceinthecompetition.

The2006Women’sEuropeanHandballChampionshipwasthelastbigeventoftheyear!ThenewEuropeanChampionof2006wascrownedonSunday17thDecember!Norwaytooktheprestigioustitlehomewiththemandthiswasnotall,theyalsowonaprestigiousOlympicplaceforthe2008OlympicsinBeijing,anautomaticstartingspotinthe2007Women’sWorldChampionshipandanautomaticplaceattheWomen’sEuropeanChampionshipinFYROMacedoniain2008.

The7thWomen’sChampionshiptookplaceinvenuesaroundSweden;Stockholm,Gothenburg,MalmoandSkövde.Theemphasisofthistopeventforwomenwasindeedfemaleparticipation.Withover300femaletopathletes,theEHFselectedtopfemalerefereesanddelegatestoofficiatethematches.TheSwedishOrganisingCommitteealsomadethisacentralpolicyoftheirselectionprocess,withwomenplayingahugeroleintheorganisationoftheevent.Throughoutallthevenues,womenwereinthemajority,whetheryouwerelookinginthepresscentre,securityorontheofficials’table.

Theeventwasextensivelycoveredinthemedia,withover500mediarepresentativesinSwedentocovertheeventand50TVstationsand12radiostationsandduetothefactthatallinformationandstatisticsfromthechampionshipareavailableonthetouchofthebuttonatwww.euro06.com,moreandmoremediarepresentativesfromallfieldsarechoosingtocovertheeventfromhome.ThewebsitewasvisitedbyhandballfansfromaroundtheworldandasfarawayasAustraliaandSriLanka,itprovedtobemostpopularinHungary,SwedenandNorway.

ThenextEuropeanChampionshipwillbeheldinFyroMacedonia.TheEHFhasneverheldsuchabigeventinthiscountryandtheexcitementisalreadygrowing.Wewillseeyouthere!

OnthenorthcoastofGermanyinCuxhaven,the4theditionoftheMen’sandWomen’sEuropeanBeachHandballChampionshipswasthehitofthesummer.Thecompetition,whichtookplacefrom11th–16thJuly2006saw135matches,playedoversixdays,withatotalof30teamsfromacrossEuropebattlingforthechampionshiptitles.Thenewchampioninthewomen’scompetitionisthehostingteam–GERMANYwhodefeatedRUSSIA(2004Champion)inathrillingfinal.Inthemen’scompetitionitwasSPAIN,whowasvictoriousoverHUNGARY,whowenthomewiththetitle.Belowyoucanfindallthefinalresultsandstandings.

TheatmosphereintheTTÜarenawashighlychargedas700spectatorsfilledthearenatowitnessthishandballfinalinTallinn,Estonia.InanemotionalmatchCroatiadefeatedDenmark(30:24)totakethechampionshiptitle!SwedendefeatedPolandtotakethirdplaceandthebronzemedal.Congratulationstoyouall!Belowyoucanfindallthefinalresultsandstandings:

Ahighlightofthesummerof2006,wasthehandballeventthattookplacefrom4th–8thJuly2006,duringthefamousPartilleCupinSweden.Forthefirsttime,theWomen’s18EuropeanOpentookplacewithintheframeworkoftheevent.Canadajoined23EuropeannationalteamsintheEuropeanOpenasaparticipatingguestnation.

TheEuropeanOpensawDenmarktakingthegold;thesameteamwontheWomen’s17EuropeanChampionship,whichtookplaceinAustriain2005.TheRussianteamprogressedfroma9thplaceattheeventin2005totakesecondinSweden,whilethirdplaceNorwaycamefromnowhereafterfailingtoqualifyfortheW17lastyear.Anothernewcomer,whoshoneduringthecompetition,weretheNetherlands;theymanagedafinalrankingof5th.

TheobjectivebehindthecreationofEHFMarketingGmbHbackinJuly2005wastoformasistercompanyoftheEuropeanHandballFederationtofocusonthefurtherdevelopment

oftheEuropeanclubcompetitionsandthe2005/2006seasonprovedjustthat.WesawtheEHFChampionsLeague,whichistheinitialfocusoftheEHFMarketing’swork,turnacorner.RapiddevelopmentshavebeenundertakenandtheEHFChampionsLeagueoftodaylooksvastlydifferenttothatofjustafewyearsago.

Despitethehugeandadventurousstepsthathavebeentaken,anyteethingproblemshavebeenovercome.TheEHFChampionsLeagueproductoftodaywouldnothavebeenpossiblewithoutthetremendoussupportfromthetopclubsandEHFpartners.

MediaCoverageThefiguresfromthe2005/2006ChampionsLeagueseasonshowedthatthiseliteEuropeanclubcompetitionismorepopularthaneverbefore.TVandmediacoveragereachednewheights.TheEHFisstrivingtocontinuethistrendbyofferinga“clean”,attractiveproductonthemarket.Breakthroughshavealreadybeenmadein2006,withanewTVpartnershipwithEurosportwhichbringChampionsLeaguehandballintomorehomesthaneverbefore.

The2005/2006season,withitsChampionsLeague,EHFCup,CupWinners’CupandChallengeCupforbothmenandwomensawatotalof728matches.Forthefirsttimeinthe2005/2006seasonclubsfromEnglandandtheassociatedmemberfederationofKosovotookpartinthecompetitions.IntheCupWinners’CupoflastseasontheRomanianclubsmanagedthedoublebywinningboththeWomen’sandMen’sChallengeCup.

Thecurrentseason(2006/2007),haswelcomedateamfromIrelandandthreeEnglishteamsintheChallengeCup.ClubsfromSerbiaandMontenegro,whicharebothnowMemberFederationsintheirownright,havealsoplayedEuropeanCuphandballforthefirsttimesincethehistoricpoliticalchangeinthisarea.Atthetimeofgoingtopress,thecurrentseasonhascurrentlyseen464matches,withthecrowningofthechampionsinAprilforthemen’scompetitionsandMayforthewomen’scompetitions.

Thebrandingofthecompetitionshastakenafurtherstep,withcompetitionflagsforeachofthecompetitionsandtherecentlylaunchedEuropeanCupwebsite.TheEuropeanHandballFederationstrivestocontinuethedevelopment,whichiscertainlyachallengewithclubsfromalldifferentpartsofEurope.

wellvisited.However,theEHFoftenusestheopportunityofeventsandspecialoccasionstocombinethemwithdraws.Thehighlightsin2006included:

Men’sandWomen’sWorldChampionshipPlay-off(Europe)DrawsThedrawfortheMen’sWorldChampionshipplay-offs(Europe)tookplaceon5thFebruary2006onthefinaldayofeuro06inSwitzerland.ItwascombinedwiththefinaldaypressconferenceoftheEuropeanChampionship,whichhasnowbecomeatraditiononthefinaldayoftheEHFEuropeanChampionships.Over200peoplepackedintothepressconferenceroomintheHallenstadioninZürichtofollowthedraw,whichwasalsobroadcastbyvariousTVstationsaroundEurope.TheeventwasfollowedbyanEHFbrunch,whereallinvolvedintheEuropeanChampionshiphadthechancetogettogether,haveachatandshareexperiences.TheMen’sWorldChampionshipwilltakeplacefrom19thJanuary–4thFebruary2007.

Thesamewastrueattheendoftheyear.Thewomen’seditionofthedrawtookplaceonthefinaldayoftheWomen’sEuropeanChampionshipon17thDecember2006andwasthelastdrawoftheseason,againitwascombinedwithapressconferenceandagettogetherafterwards.Theplay-offs(Europe)willtakeplaceon2/3Juneand9/19June2007.

Men’sandWomen’sChampionsLeagueDraws–GroupMatchesThedefendingchampionsofthe2005/2006ChampionsLeaguetitlesinboththewomen’sandthemen’sdisciplineshostedthedrawsforthegroupmatchphaseoftheChampionsLeague.Themen’sdrawtookplaceatthehomeoftheSpanishteamofCiudadReal.Representativesfromalloftheparticipatingclubs,joinedtheEHFrepresentativesforthedraw,whichwasalsofollowedlivearoundEuropeontheEHFwebsite.KirilLazarovwasalsopresentatthedrawtoacceptthe“TopScorer”award.

TheEHFusedtheoccasionoftheWomen’sEuropeanChampionshipforClubTeamsinViborg,DenmarktoholdthedrawfortheWomen’sChampionsLeagueGroupmatches.ThistookplacebeforethefinalandwasbroadcastliveonTV.

The8thEHFOrdinaryCongresscommencedinVilamoura,PortugalonFriday5thMay2006,with46oftheEHF’s47MemberFederationsandassociatedmemberKosovopresentforthisimportantsport-politicaleventtopaththewayofEuropeanhandballforthenextperiodof2years.

Over150participantslistenedtotheChairmanoftheCongress,PresidentTorLian,opentheeventwelcomingallmembernationsandguestsfromthePortugueseauthoritiesandlongstandingEHFTVandMarketingpartnerInfrontSportsandMedia.

ThePresidentoftheEuropeanHandballFederationpresentedabusinessreportoftheperiod2004–2005,lookingbackatthespectrumofEHFactivitiesduringthisperiod.Thisincludeddevelopmentsinclubhandball.ThecontinuoussuccessoftheEuropeanChampionshipswasstressed.FiguresfromtheMen’sEuropeanChampionshipinSwitzerland,whichtookplacebackinJanuary/February,reportedcoverageby120TV/radiostationswithover760millionviewers.LianwentontoinformtheCongressthatEHFmajorsportingeventshavebeenorganisedby75%ofMemberFederations,whichamountsto37ofthe47nations.ThisisanumbertobeproudofbytheentireEuropeanHandballFederation.

ThisfollowedareportbytheEHFSecretaryGeneralMichaelWiederer,inhisfunctionasManagingDirector,onthebusinessagendaofEHFMarketingGmbH,whichwasfoundedinJuly2005andhasnowcompleteditsfirstseasonofexistence.TheCongressheardofincreasedmediacoverageandnewinitiativesintroducedsuchaswebstreamingofmatchesandTVHighlightMagazine.Thesuccesswillreflectonthesupportgiventotheclubsinthefuture.Wiedererlookedforwardtothecomingseasons,speakingoffutureplansincludingTVcontractsandgeneralproductdevelopments,suchasaChampionsLeagueflooringsystem.

Day1Day1oftheCongressbelongedtothetabledmotionsanddiscussionsonthem.Thenationsvotedunanimouslyontheadoptionofmotionsrelatingtothefollowingpoints.AmendmentstotheArbitrationStatutesoftheEHF,ResolutionsonDisputes,InitiatorofProceedingswhichwillmeanthattheExecutiveCommitteeisdelegatedthetasktoappointaninstitutiontoactasaninitiatorofproceeding,priortotheinstigationoftheofficialEHFlegalprocessof1st(CompetitionsCommission)and2ndInstance(CourtofAppeal).

FurthermotionspassedrelatedtothecontinueddevelopmentandpromotionofhandballwhichallowstheEHF,asanon-profitmakingorganisation,tooperateeducationalfacilitiesandtrainingprogrammesanddonateproceedsfromcharityeventstotheEHFSocialFund.

Itwasalsoagreed,inlinewithprofessionalEHFeventmanagement,thattheofficiallanguageatEHFeventswillbeEnglishinthefuture.Crossborderclubcompetitionsforseniorteamswerealsodiscussed,theCongressagreedthatsuchcompetitionsshallfulfilspecialrequirementsandthereforebesubjecttotheapprovalofnationalfederationsandinformationwillbeforwardedtotheEHF.

JanTuik,CompetitionCommissionChairman,presentedthenewformatforEuropean

Championshipqualifications,whichhasbeendrawnupfollowingaWorkingGroupanddiscussionswhichtookplaceattheEHFConferenceofPresidentsbackinNovember2005.Theparticipantsthendiscussedthismatterinsomedetailandvotedtoadopttheproposal.Thiswillcomeintoeffectforthemenafterthe2010Men’sEuropeanChampionshipinAustria.

NewMembersTheCongressvotedunanimouslytowelcomeMonacoasanewmemberoftheEHFandtomakeallowancesfortheadmissionofMontenegroasaseparatememberdependantontheresultofpoliticaldevelopmentsinthisareabasedontheforthcomingreferendum.SincetheCongress,theExecutiveCommitteehasfulfilleditsdutydelegatedbytheCongress;SerbiaandMontenegroarenowrecognisedasfullEHFmembersintheirownright.ThisbringsthenumberofEHFMemberNationsto49.

2006EHFYouthHandballConventionTheEuropeanHandballFederationcelebratedits15th“birthday”withthefocusonthefutureofhandball.Over150participantsfrom45nationsmetinVienna,thehomeoftheEHFHeadquarters,todiscusstheirideasandviewsonthedevelopmentofthesport.

TheparticipantsoftheEuropeanYouthHandballConventionwerejoinedbythetoprepresentativesfromtheEHFMemberFederationstolistentocorelecturesonthedemographicsofhandball,15yearsofyoungeragecategorycompetitions,thephysiologicalprofileofplayersandtalentidentificationinhandball.Theseformedtheintroductiontotheevent,whichwasdesignedtobeaninteractiveconvention.

Allparticipantsrotatedaroundworkshopswhichcentredaroundthesubjectsofyouthhandball,handballinthefutureintheareasofanimation/promotion,educationtraining/leadership&competitionandtoplevelhandball,paralleltothisagroupofyoungreferees,coachesandplayersagedfrom18–24discussedwhathandballshouldlooklikeinthefutureinaYouthHandballForum.

TheresultoftheworkshopandideasfromtheyouthforumwerepresentedtothenationalfederationsintheclosingperiodoftheeventandwillhavedirectinfluenceonthefurtherprocedureandfuturestrategyoftheEHF.

OtherhighlightsAsalwaysatEHFevents,manymeetingstookplacetousetheopportunitythatallnationsweretogether:

• TheEHFsignedaprotocolofcooperationwiththeMediterraneancountriesasseenin thephotograph,onpage41

• AnewlyintroducedFosterProject,whereleadinghandballnationspartnerandsupport developingnationswasalsosigned.AustriapartnersLithuania,Denmark–Bulgaria, Ireland–Netherlands,Norway–Georgia,Romania–MoldovaandHungary–Latvia. Furtherpartnershipsareplanned.

• TorLianandthePresidentoftheItalianHandballFederation,FrancescoPurromuto, signedthecontractoforganisationforthe2007Men’sandWomen’sEuropeanBeach HandballChampionships,whichwillbeplayedinMisanoAdriatico(nearRimini)inJuly.

WheelchairHandballDemonstrationTheparticipantswerealsotreatedtoademonstrationonwheelchairhandball,toshowhowthegamecanbeadapted.Theemphasisofthisformofthegameisonfairplayandsportingspirit.Thespectatorswereallimpressedwithhowquicklytheplayerspickedupthesportandenjoyedtheexperience.

Itwassymbolicforthe15yearcelebrationsthatparticipantsfromtheYouthHandballConventionjoinedtherepresentativesfromtheMemberFederationsandEHFPartners.

PartoftheprogrammewastheawardingthenewlyintroducedInfrontAward(longstandingEHFTVandMarketingPartnerfortheEuroEvents)forthetoprankednationsintheYoungerAgeCategorycompetitions.Denmark;RussiawerejointfirstandSpainandRomaniathird.Thenationswereawardedwithadiplomaandafinancialendowment.

Theeveningwasahugesuccess,withspiritsforthefutureofoursporthighandafriendlyandfestiveatmosphere.

BeachHandballTaskForceTheBeachHandballTaskforce,comprisingofLaszloSinka(Exec),JesusGuerrero(CC),TonvanLinder(MC)andPeterFröschl(EHF),metthreetimesoverthecourseoftheyear.ThefirstmeetingwasheldinZurichduringthefinalweekendoftheMen’sEuropeanChampionship.ThismeetingcoveredmultipletopicsinrelationtothestructureofBeachHandball,theBeachHandballEuropeanChampionshipsandtheYouthEuropeanChampionshipswherethefocuswasaimedatfindingwaytoreducethecostforparticipantsandorganisersinthefuture.ThesecondmeetingoftheyearwasheldinGreeceinthecityofKateriniwithintheframeworkofthe2005EuropeanBeachTourMasters.Duringthismeetingplansforsomeofthecoursesthattookplacethroughtheyearwerecemented.AlsoafocalpointofdiscussionwasthefurtherdevelopmentoftheEuropeanBeachTour.ThefinalmeetingoftheBeachHandballTaskForcetookplaceinOctoberattheEHFHeadquarters.Thismeetingdissectedandevaluatedthe2006EuropeanBeachHandballChampionshipsthattookplaceinGermanyinJuly.TheupcomingBeachEChs,thatwilltakeplaceinItalyinthesummerof2007,werealsoontheagendaalongsidepublications,Mastersandotherissues.TheBeachHandballTaskForcewillreconveneinJanuary2007.

MarketingSupervisorWorkshopOnthe10thSeptemberthemarketingbranchoftheEuropeanHandballFederationinvited35participantstoViennatoaworkshopaimedatcreatinganewpositionatevents,thatofasupervisorwhowouldtakeonspecificdutiesrelatingtothemarketingaspectandtheoverallvisualpresentationoftheEHFChampionsLeague.Theagendaforthismeetingincludedanin-depthlookatallareasoftheEHFChampionsLeaguewithparticularfocusonTVagreementsandcoverage.TheregulationsgoverningthecompetitionwerealsoakeyfixtureinthisworkshopandtheroleoftheMarketingSupervisorwasdiscussedatlength.Theparticipantswerealsoassessedontheirknowledgeofthecompetitionanditsregulations.Additionallyvisualpresentationswerealsogiven.ThemarketingarmoftheEuropeanHandballFederationhasmadecomprehensivechangesin2006;theadditionoftheMarketingSupervisorisonereflectiontothemanyinitiativesthathavebeenimplemented.

inViennaonthe21stSeptember.RepresentativesfromTVstationsaroundEuropemettheEHFMarketingteamandpartnersforthisone-daysession,wheretheyreceivedinformationontheChampionsLeagueproductanditsidentityandtheEHFTVpartnerrequirements.AtthetopoftheagendawerethereviewoftheEHFChampionsLeagueseason2005/2006andapreviewofthe2006/2007seasonthatincludedalookatthelimitationofadvertisingandbrandingamongstothertopics.InadditiontoEHFTVpartnerrequirements,afullmediaanalysisandtherewasalsoinformationonthenewplayingsystemthathassincebeenimplemented.

Men’sChampionsLeagueWorkshopTheworkshopthattakesplacebeforethestartofeachEHFChampionsLeagueseasontookplaceonthe13thSeptemberattheGartenhotelAltmannsdorfinVienna.TheaimofthisworkshopwastoprovideallteamswithanupdateofnewstandardsandprojectsaswellasthesituationofTVrightsandmarketingactivities.Anothergoalofthisyear’sworkshopwastheexchangeofideasconcerningafurtherdevelopmentoftheproductChampionsLeagueintermsofTV,marketing,playinghalls,floors,etc.Theteamswerealsobeprovidedwithallnecessarymaterialforthe2006/07competitionseasonandtooktheopportunitytoacquaintthemselveswithothertopEuropeanteams.

EuropeanChampionshipWorkshop–SwedenThefirstworkshopofthe2006EuropeanChampionshipforWomentookplaceinJulyof2004;therehavebeenatotalofsixworkshopsforthiseventandcountlessmeetingandcommunicationbetweenallparties.InMarchof2006,thefourthworkshoptookplace,whentheorganisationwasatacriticalpoint;thefirstthingontheagendawasnaturallythestatusoftheorganisation,alsodiscussedwerematchschedules,arenas,mediamanagementandlogisticsinadditiontomanyothertopics.Inthismeetingthatlastedtwodays,theSwedishorganisingCommitteewasrepresentedbyFrankStrömandArneElovsson.Thefifthworkshopwascarriedoutonthe7thJulythisyearandthefinalworkshopbeforetheeventtookplaceinGöteborgonthe6thOctober,togetherwiththeheadofdelegationseminarwiththerepresentativesoftheparticipatingteams,wherealldetailswerefinalisedandfinelytuned.Pleasegotothecompetitionssectionofthe2006AnnualReportformoredetailsonthistophandballevent.

2ndEHFRegionalCourseforHandballDelegatesSeventeenparticipantsfrom10Europeannationstookpartinthe2ndEHFRegionalCourseforHandballDelegatesinTata(HUN)fromthe31stMay–4thJune2006.TheparticipantsfullyimmersedthemselvesinthevariouscourseandtrainingsessionsorganisedbytheEHFEducationGroupincooperationwithPeterSandorfromtheHungarianHandballFederation.ThecontentsofthiscoursewereinlinewiththoseoftheEHF“Pilot”coursethattookplaceinKiev(UKR).Throughinteractivediscussionsandexercises,thecourseaimedtoimprovecommunicationbetweenrefereesanddelegatesaswellashoningeventmanagementskillsamongstotherthings.

3rdEHFRegionalCourseforHandballDelegatesFollowingonfromthesuccessfulprecedingcoursesfirstheldinKiev(UKR)andthenthe2ndcourseheldinGyör(HUN),the3rdEHFCourseforHandballDelegatestookplaceinRotterdam(NED)fromthe1st–5thNovember2006.IncooperationwiththeNederlandsHandbalVerbondandtheEHFTechnicalCommissions,thecoursewasheldwithintheframeworkofthe2006HollandTournamentforWomen.TheEHFCourseforHandballDelegatesremainstheplatformforthepracticaleducation.EighteenparticipantsfromtenEuropeannationsactivelyparticipatedinthecoursethatwasledbyJanTuik(CompetitionCommissionChairman),WolfgangPollany(MethodsCommission)andTerjeAnthonsen(MentorRefereeGuidance).Thetopicsopenfordiscussionincludedrules,eventmanagementandinteractionbetweenrefereesanddelegates.

EHFTopCoaches’SeminarThe2006EHFTopCoachesSeminarinZurichwasheldonthefinalweekendofeuro06fromthe2nd–5thFebruary.FrantisekTaborsky(EHFEXEC)waspleasedtowelcome113participantsfrom25EHFMemberFederations,aswellasfromtheContinentalFederationsofAsia,PanAmericaandAfrica.Thetargetgroupwasallcoachesworkingwithtopteamsandthemainfocusofthisseminarwas:“Speedandefficiencyintoplevelhandball”.MichalBarda(CZE),BranislavPokrajac(SCG),WolfgangPollany(AUT)andZvonimirSerdarusic(GER)conductedthelectures.Theentirecoursedocumentationisavailableina2-discset.

2006EHFMentors“RefereeGuidance”CoordinationMeetingTheobjectiveofthe2006EHFMentors“RefereeGuidance”CoordinationMeetingthattookplaceinGyör(HUN)fromthe22nd–25thJune2006wastopromotediscussionandexchangeinformationonsuchtopicsas:NewwaysofObservation,MentoringandGuidance,RefereeCurriculumandtheNominationCriteriaforReferees.ElevenEHFMentorsattendedthiscoursethatwasledbytheEHFEducationGroupandthreeEHFLecturers.

EHF–NoosInstituteOnthe24thApril2006theEHFwelcomedMr.UrdangarinandMr.SansaoftheNoosInstituteinSpaintogiveapresentationontheprojectValencia2010.DuringthiscooperationmeetingthepossibilityofaMultiSportEventonaEuropeanLevelinthefutureincludinghandballwasdiscussed.Theeventwouldonceagainbringhandballstopathletesbackintothespotlight.ThediscussionsremaininthepreliminarystageatthecloseoftheyearandtheEuropeanHandballFederation,throughournewsservicewillimpartanynewdevelopmentstothehandballcommunity.

EHF–LTUSecretaryGeneralJolantaJankevicieneByinvitationextendedbytheEuropeanHandballFederation,ameetingwasheldonthe25thApril2006withJolantaJankeviciene.TheEHFutilisedtheoccasiontowelcomethenewsecretarygeneraloftheLithuanianHandballFederation.Itwasalsotheperfectopportunityforbothpartiestodiscusstopicsonalllevelsrangingfromgeneralquestionstomorespecificqueriesrelatingtocompetitions,methodsanddevelopmentalissues.Onceagain,wewelcomeMs.Jankevicienetohernewpostandwishhereverysuccess.

CooperationVisittoBosniaHerzegovinaWithintheframeworkoftheWomen’sChallengeTrophy,EHFrepresentativesLianandWiederermetwiththepresidentandotherrepresentativesfromtheHandballFederationofBosniaHerzegovina.IncontinuedeffortstostrengthentiesbetweentheEHFanditsmemberfederations,thismeetingallowedtheparticipantstodiscusstheChallengeTrophy,theBIHChampionshipCupandinterestshownbyBIHtopossiblyhostaEuropeanChampionshipinthefuture.

CooperationVisittoSerbiaandMontenegroThevisittotheformerstateofSerbiaandMontenegro,inBelgradeandPodgorica,thattookplaceinApril2006andentailedadetaileddiscussionwiththeentirefederation.Thismeetingwasabsolutelynecessarytocovertopicssuchascompetitionsthatwerealreadyinprogressandthefuturequalificationsofnationalteams,EuropeanCupcompetitions,thecompetitionsdepartmentinSerbia,aswellasmanyothertopics.FurthertothereferenduminMontenegroonthe21stMay2006andhavingobtainedauthorityfromthe2006EHFCongress,MontenegrowasadmittedasafullmembertotheEHFonthe1stJuly2006.Followingthepoliticalchangesinbothcountries,theIOCofficiallydesignatedthecodeofMNEtoMontenegro,whileSerbiatookontheofficialcodeofSRB.

CelebrationsTwoEHFMemberFederationshadcausetocelebrateattheendofMay.TheHandballFederationofBelaruscelebratedits50thAnniversaryon24thMayandMoldovacelebratedtheofficialopeningofitsnewinternationalsports’hallinChisinauon29thMay.EHFExecutiveCommitteeMemberBorisMakarov(RUS)waspresentonbothoccasionstoofficiallyhandoveraGerflor“yellowandblue”eurofloortobothfederationsintheinterestoffurtherhandballdevelopment.

MeetingoftheEuropeanTeamSportsAssociationsOn31stMay2006,theEHFPresidentandSecretaryGeneralwereguestsattheUEFAHeadquartersinNyon,SwitzerlandforaMeetingoftheEuropeanTeamSportsAssociationswhichhasnowbecomeanannualeventontheteamsports’calendar.Representativesfromvarioussportingassociationsusedthisopportunitytoexchangeknowledgeonprinciplematterscommontoallteamsports.Inaddition,privateinitiativesforclubcompetitionswerealsodiscussed.ItalsopresentedtheopportunitytodiscusstheIndependentEuropeanSportsReview,whichwaspublishedshortlybeforethismeetingtookplaceandmakesnumerousrecommendationstotheadministrationofsportsinthefuture.Furthermore,theEHFExecutiveCommitteediscussedthisissueonceagainwhentheymetinPrague/CZEonJune10th2006.

TheEHFworksextremelycloselywithInfrontandhasregularworkingsessionsinViennaandZuginboththepreparatoryperiodandduringtheEuropeanChampionshipstoguaranteeasportingeventofthehigheststandards.InfronthasplayedaconsiderableroleinsecuringtheplacementoftheEuropeanChampionshipproductonthesportingmarket,withtheeventprovingtobeaspopularasever.

adidasThereputationoftheadidastrademarkprecedesitself.adidashasbeentheofficialEHFpartnerforsportingequipmentandclothingsince1992.ThecompanysuppliestopclassballsandsportsclothingfortheEHFeventsandofficials.adidashasalsosuppliedtheChampionsLeagueballsincethe2004/05season.TheEHFislookingforwardtobeingconnectedtoadidasformanyyearstocome.

NijhaTheEHFofficialgoalsupplierforEUROevents,bothseniorandtheyoungeragecategorieshasbeenworkingwithNijhasince2002andhasanagreementuptoandincluding2008.Thespeciallydevelopedgoalsmeettheexceptionalrequirementsnecessaryforhigh-classhandballevents.Additionally,NIJHAistheofficialBeachHandballpartneroftheEHF.SpecialballsandinnovativegoalsforBeachHandballaresubjecttoacooperationagreementthatcommencedin2005.

GerflorThe“blueandyellow”nolineflooringsystemattheEuropeanChampionshiphasbecomeatrademarkfeatureoftheeventsandisrecognisedworld-wide.TheEHFhasbeenworkingwithGerflorsince2004toprovidetheEuropeanChampionshipsforMenandWomen,plustheYoungerAgeCategory,eventswithahighqualityeventfloorwhichsatisfiestheneedsofboththeathletesandtherequirementsofamoderntopclassevent.In2006theagreementwasextendedtoincludeaChampionsLeagueflooringsystemforselectedmatchesinthegroupphaseandinallvenuesasofthelastsixteenmatches.Thedistinctive“ChampionsLeaguecolours”ofbluelagoonandblackwillbeusedtopresenttheeventidentity.

SPORTFIVEInMay2006,EHFMarketingenteredintoafive-yearagreementwiththeinternationalsportsmarketingcompanySPORTFIVE,whichcameintoeffectwiththe2006/07season.Inafirststep,thetwopartnershavejointlystandardisedandfine-tunedsponsorpublicityintheMen’sHandballChampionsLeague.ThomasRöttgermann,ExecutiveVicePresidentofSPORTFIVE.“EnteringintotheinternationalclubhandballcommunitygivesustheopportunitytoexpandourbusinessintootherfieldsoutsideoffootballandtoworkhandinhandwithEHFandtheirmarketingexpertstosharpentheprofileoftheHandballChampionsLeague.”

ItisthedutyoftheEuropeanHandballFederationtoactasacommonvoicefortheEuropeanMemberFederationsandensurethatthebusinessoftheEHFandactivitiesarecommunicatedtoallpartiesinanefficientandeffectiveway.TheEHF’sobjectiveistoguaranteeapro-activeandopencommunicationstrategyandusesvariousmethodsandchannelstorealisethisgoal.

ThecoreofthecommunicationmethodsstillrevolvesaroundtheEHFNEWSSERVICE,whichhasbeenaroundsincetheverybeginningoftheEHF;regularnewseditionsstillformthebasisoftheEHFcommunicationstrategy.In2006morethan180newseditionswerepublished,whichmeanspracticallyeverysecondday.TheworkoftheEHFcoversawidespectrumandinvolvesworkingwithmanydifferentpeoplefromallareasofthesportonadailybasis.Westrivetoensurethatallarekeptinformedonthedailyactivitiesandeventsofthefederation.E-mailhasprovedtobeanidealcommunicationmediumforthispurpose;itisnotonlyquickbutalsocosteffective.

InfactthevastbulkoftheEHFinformationserviceisnowbasedondigitaltechnologies,reachingtarget-definedaudiencesatspeedandbearinginmindcostefficiency,whichobviouslyplaysamajorroleinanymodernbusinessstrategy.

TheinternationaltransfersystemisbasedontheIHFregulation.TheEuropeanHandballFederationhasmadeasubstantialcontributiontothiswork,duetotheincreasingnumber

oftransferswithinEurope.

Therewereanincreasingnumberoftransfersinaspecificagecategory(16–23years)thatpromptedtheEducationCompensationrulestobeapplied.Incomparisontoimplementationperiodoftheserules,in2006therewerefewercasesrelatingtonon-agreementthanin2005.

“SMART”ProgrammeTheEuropeanHandballFederationcontinuedintheirendeavourstosupportthedevelopinghandballnationsacrossthecontinent.Thecoreofthisprojectistoaiddevelopingnationsbydonatinghandballmaterials.TheEHF“SMART”programmehasadvancedintheiractivitiesandmanaged,in2006tosupplyninenationsincludingARM,ALB,AZE,ENG,MDAandSCOwhoareincludedunderthecurrentproject.Betweenthesenations,theyhavereceived:indoorhandballs,beachhandballs,beachhandballlinesystems,beachhandballgoals,indoorgoals,scoreboardsand6lecturershavesharedthebenefitsoftheirknowledge.Allparticipantsinthe“SMART”programmehavealsobenefitedfromfinancialassistance.

The“RINCK”ConventionItwasthedesignanddedicationofformerMethodsCommissionchairman,ClaudeRinck,thatsawtheRINCKConventionestablishedin1997.ThiswastheresponsetoanEUinitiativeconcerningthemutualrecognitionofstandardsandcertificatesintheareaofcoaches’educationinhandballinEurope.

Towardstheendoftheyear(30thSept–1stOct2006),a“RINCK”ConventionseminartookplaceattheEHFheadquartersinVienna.Thesignatoriesfrom14nationsparticipatedinafruitfuldebateabouttheEuropeancommunityandeducationwithanoverviewofthe‘Europeaneducationstrategies’,withintheframeworkofchangingEuropeanpolicy,andaccordingly,furtherconsequencesforfutureevolutionintheeducationalfield.

TheEuropeanHandballFederationispleasedtoannouncethatanother10menandwomenhavemetallnecessaryrequirementsandthetotalnumberofEHFMasterCoachesnowstandsat85.

EHFFosterProjectItisintheinterestoftheEHFandthememberfederationstohaveasmanystronganddevelopedmemberfederationsaspossible.TheEHFFosterProjectwasinitiatedin2006bytheMethodsCommissionandisaimedatestablishingcooperationbetweentheEHF,developinghandballfederationsanddevelopedhandballfederationsinEurope.TheEHFisendeavouringtoencouragethemoredevelopedmemberfederationstofosteradevelopinghandballnationinordertoprovidesupportandfurtherguidancebasedonmutualagreementforacertainperiodoftime.OntheoccasionoftheMeetingofPresidentonthe18thNovemberthefollowingnationsandtheEHFsignedfurthercooperationagreements:

HandballatSchoolTheEHF“HandballatSchool”ConferencetookplaceinInnsbruck(AUT)fromthe18thto

the19thAugust2006ontheoccasionofthemen’s20ECh.Followingupfromthemeetingslastyear,thetopicsupfordiscussionwere:Howtomotivatepupils/childrenandhowtomotivateteachers/parents/universities.Additionally,theaspectofpublicationsandtheHandball-at-Schoolpackagewereonceagainputintothespotlight.TheEHFlecturerswhocoordinatedthetopicswereTeomin-Frenkel(ISR-MC),Pollany(AUT-MC),Lund(DEN-MC),Hjorth(DEN-WorkingGroup“HandballatSchool”)andSevim(TUR-WorkingGroup“HandballatSchool”).TheEHFwelcomedthirtyparticipantsfrom24nations,aswellasthefourexternalexpertswhowereonhandtosharetheirknowledgeandexperience.

Shoot-out!TheEHFbegananinitiativein2004basedonanewideaandruleexperiment,sincethentheideaofthe“shoot-out”hasbeencontinuouslydeveloped.In2006theEHFproducedabrochurethatincludedaCD-ROMthatcarriesavisualexampleofthegamethatisintendedtodecideamatchwithouttheimplementationofextratimeand7m-throws.Forbothyouthandseniorteamstobeabletoimplementthisinnovationthe“Shoot-Out”canbeoperatedunderthe“Light”or“Premium”versions.TheCD-ROMandbrochureareavailablebycontactingtheEHFHeadquarters.

SummerCampHereattheEHF,wearewellawarethatthefutureofhandballliesinthehandsofouryoungerplayers.InthefieldofMethodsandDevelopmenthereattheEHFHeadquarters,thestaffcontinuetoworkwiththeissueofSummerCamps.Themainfocusofthesecampsistocombinematcheswithfunandlifetimesportingactivitiesaswellaseducationthatincludelessonsonfairplay,ethicsandmoralsinsportandsociallife.In2006,theEHFproducedthe“SummerCampPhilosophy”informationsheetthatincludedaCD-ROMcontainingdemonstrationsaimedataidingthesummercamporganiser.

WheelchairHandballHandballisconstantlygrowingthankstoallpeoplewholovethissportandwhowanttosharetheirknowledge,timeandpatience.Peoplelikeus.We,theEuropeanHandballFamily,heartilywelcomeallpeopleinterestedinhandballandweareeagertoestablishthebestconditionstomeettheirneeds.

Nowitistimetowelcomeanewmembertoourfamilyandtoopenuphandballfordisabledpeoplesharingourhandballphilosophy.Wehavetobeawareofourresponsibilitytosportsmen,andwomen,whoarenotabletoplayhandballinthetraditionalmanner.Handballshouldnotbelimitedtoage,genderorphysicalcondition.Handballisasportforallwithnoborders!

ThereforetheEHFworkedonthepilotproject“WheelchairHandball”.AfterlessthanoneyearpreparationtheEHFwasabletoorganiseitsfirstWheelchairHandballdemonstrationincooperationwiththe5-timeswinneroftheAustrianWheelchairBasketballchampionship,the“sittingbulls”ontheoccasionofthe2006EHFYouthHandballConventiondated18November06.

Theintentionwastoshowallparticipantshow“WheelchairHandball”couldbeplayedandtoprovidethemwithsomeguidelinesandideastorealizethisgame.ThereforetheEHFproducedaproposalon“HowtoplayWheelchairHandball”guidedbyanmpegvideoofthedemonstrationgame.In2007,developmentinthisareawillcontinueandtheEHFwelcomesanyenquiriesrelatingtothisnewandexcitingsphereinhandball.

EHFStructureBuiltonthevisionofNationalHandballFederationsacrossEurope,theEuropeanHandballFederationfoundedin1991,isinalliancebetweenthememberfederations,theelectedbodiesandEHFpersonnel.ForgedinordertodevelopEuropeanhandball,theEHFhasgonefromstrengthtostrength.

TheEHFcelebratedits15thyearanniversaryin2006.TheEHFhasmaderemarkableprogressinallareasofhandballdevelopment.ThishasmeantthattheoriginalEHFstructurehasbeenadaptedtokeepupwithallthenewdevelopmentsandtrendsinthefieldofEuropeanhandball.TheEHFhasfacedadversityinmanyareas,thesportingmarketiscontinuallychanging,thepoliticalmapofEuropeevolves,challengesarefaced,successesarecelebratedyettheoverallgoalneverdisappearsfromview.

TheworkoftheEuropeanHandballFederationismultifaceted,withavaryingrangeofsubjectsandinallareastheheadquartersstrivestoinnovateanddeveloptothebestoftheirability.

In2006,tonamejustafew,theEHForganisedtwoseniorEuropeanChampionships,aCongress,aYouthHandballConvention,nottomentiontheEuropeanChampionshipforClubTeams,ChampionsLeaguematchesandtheEuropeanCupcompetitions.

ModificationswithinEuropehaveledtochangeswithintheEHF,theEHFisnowcomposedof49memberfederationsandanassociatedfederation.Inadditiontothis,23people(EHF)andsixpeople(EHFMarketingGmbH)contributeonafullandpart-timebasistotheproducthandball.TheEHFHeadquartershavebeenextendedtoaccommodatetheinternalchangesandinordertofulfilthetasksasabaseforactivitiessuchasseminarsanddrawevents.

BasedonthestrategicdecisionsmadebytheExecutiveCommittee,theEHFcontinuestoexcel.TheworkingpartnershipbetweenallinvolvedcontinuestocontributetothedevelopmentofEuropeanhandball.

2006provedtobeamilestoneinthedevelopmentoftheEHFChampionsLeagueandcanbeseenasabreakthroughforEuropeanclubhandballingeneral.EHFMarketingfocuseditsattentiononthebrandingoftheproductwiththemissiontooffera“clean”andattractivepackageforthesportingworld.

Newregulations,inan-easy-to-useformathavebeendrawnup,whichcanonlybeseenasastepforwardforclubhandballasawholeandthequalityoftheeventsthattheEHFoffers.Theyincludeimportantguidelinesabout“thelook”oftheevent,theprofessionalmanagementofthematchesandthemediamanagementandpromotionsurroundingtheentireevent.Wearenolongertalkingaboutasinglehandballmatch;wearetalkingaboutahandballeventofeverincreasingproportions.

FigureshaveproventhattheEHFisontherightroad,asfarasthedevelopmentoftheEHFChampionsLeagueisconcerned.Therehasneverbeensomuchhandballontelevision,coverageinthesportingpressorfansinthestadia.ItsallaboutpartnershipratherthansponsorshipandtheEHFMarketinghasturnedacornerforclubhandball,withstrongtieswithSPORTFIVE,whoaremarketingtheMen’sChampionsLeague,to-a-part,inthegroupphaseandasofthelast16.EurosportisalsobringingthedelightsoftheEHFChampionsLeagueintothehomesofsportfansaroundEurope.

Celebrating15 yearsoftheEHF

ThevisionofaEuropeanHandballFederation,servingthesportofhandballontheEuropeancontinentandcoordinatingthedevelopmentpathofoursport,wasaconceptformanyyearsbeforeitwasrealised.On17thNovember1991,thedreambecamearealityandtheEuropeanHandballFederationwasformed.

Sincethishistoricdate,theEHFhasdoneitsutmosttotakeonitsroleasambassadortoEuropeanhandball,actingasacommonvoicefortheEuropeanMemberFederations,representingtheentireEuropeanHandballFamilyonaninternationalstageandworkingtogetherwithothercontinentalhandballfederations.

Now,15YearslatertheEuropeanHandballFederationcanlookbackwithprideatthedevelopments,whichthesportofhandballhasundergoneonourcontinent.Thestatusofhandballisnolongerthatof15yearsago.TheactivitiesoftheEHFandallitspartners,whohaveworkedinunisontogetherandformedtheEuropeanhandballbond,haveallgonedowninhistory.AllhavebeenrecordedintheAnnualReports.

TheEHFisnowlookingtothenext15yearsandbeyondandwillcontinuetopursueitsobjectivetodevelopandserveoursport–handball;howeverbeforetheanniversaryyearisover,wewouldliketosendyoubackdownmemorylanewithalookattheEHFAnnualReportsofthepast!Wehopetheybringbackmanyhappymemories!

Anotheryearhascometoanend!2006isjustadistantmemoryandwe’renowwellinto2007!

2006wasanextraspecialyearforallthoseinvolvedinhandball.Itwascertainlyanaction-packedandbusyyearforeverybody.TheEuropeanHandballFederationcelebratedits15yearanniversary,wherewetookamomenttolookbackwithprideattheevolutionoftheEuropeanHandballFamilyandthehugedevelopmentsthatthesportonourcontinenthasundergone.Thesportofhandballhasearneditselfanextraspecialreputation,andhasprovenitselftobeoneofthemostpopularteamsportsinEurope,whichunderlinestheworkonalllevels,byallthosewhoaresmittenby–whatwecallinthetrade–the“handballbug”.

TheEHFismadeupof49MemberFederationsandworksonadailybasiswithover700individualswhoallcontributetostrengtheningtheimageofoursportandwhoareallexpertsintheirownspecialistfield.Thecharacterswhichcontributetothepersonalityofourhandballfamilyaretoomanytolist,butwithoutthemthebusinessofprofessionalhandballmanagement,presentingoursportinagoodlightonthemarketandthedevelopmentswhichwesee,wouldnotbepossible.

Mediacoveragewasgreaterthaneverbeforein2006.ThiscanbesaidforbothnationalandEuropeanlevels,andlastyearwasbynomeansanisolatedcase,thetrendcontinues.2007promisestobeanattractiveyearforhandballonourcontinent,withtopevents,nationalteamandclubteamactivitiesandlet’snotforgettheinternationalprojectsofdifferentmagnitudes.

TheEuropeanHandballFederationandallitsemployeesdotheirutmosttoworkcloselywithallpartnersbothinternallyandexternally.Weallhaveonegoalinsightandthatistodoourbesttodevelopthesportofhandball.
