VALE - MARGARET MEAD BORN 10/08/1916 DIED 13/11/2017

Margaret was born in the English county of Somerset and married her home town

boyfriend Arthur in 1939 who joined the army at the outbreak of war. After the birth of

her daughter Valerie she joined the Royal Observer Corps and was actively involved in

the Battle of Britain and D Day being on duty the entire night and early morning of D

Day.

Post war years saw the family living in Salisbury with the addition of a baby boy,

Simon. In 1962 the family sold up and sailed to Australia and immediately fell in love

with the glorious sunshine, blue sky and clean air of Fremantle.

Despite having no experience at catering, the family leased the tea rooms at Araluen

and then took on a corner deli in Cottesloe until tiring of working seven day weeks.

Margaret and Arthur retired in 1978 and became part of the “grey nomads” travelling

around and across Australia.

Following Arthur’s death and finding herself dependent on a three wheel scooter for

mobility, Margaret took up archery and joined the AIM Archery Group in 1995 where

she made many good friends. She celebrated both her 90th and 100th Birthday with fel-

low archers, many of whom kept in contact during her declining years. Margaret

leaves behind her two children and three grandchildren. Farewell Margaret.

You will be missed.

The funeral service for Margaret Mead, late of Bayswater will be held in the

East Chapel, Pinaroo Valley Memorial Park, Whitfords Avenue Padbury.

Can you remember what you were doing on the 9th November in 1957? Ask either

Rosemary or Ron Stone, for they can. 60 years ago they were married and their love

and respect for each other has endured this period of time. Congratulations to you

both from all the members of AIM. May the coming years be kind to you both.

Archery Snippets The oldest definite bows known so far come from the Holmegård swamp in Denmark. In the 1940s, two bows were found there, dat-

ed to about 8,000 BP.[3] The Holmegaard bows are made of elm and have flat arms and a D-shaped midsection. The center section

is biconvex. The complete bow is 1.50 m (5 ft) long. Bows of Holmegaard-type were in use until the Bronze Age; the convexity of the

midsection has decreased with time.

Mesolithic pointed shafts have been found in England, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. They were often rather long, up to 120 cm

(4 ft) and made of European hazel (Corylus avellana), wayfaring tree (Viburnum lantana) and other small woody shoots. Some still

have flint arrow-heads preserved; others have blunt wooden ends for hunting birds and small game. The ends show traces of fletch-

ing, which was fastened on with birch-tar.

The oldest depictions of combat, found in Iberian cave art of the Mesolithic, show battles between archers.[4] A group of three arch-

ers encircled by a group of four is found in Cueva del Roure, Morella la Vella, Castellón, Valencia. A depiction of a larger battle (which

may, however, date to the early Neolithic), in which eleven archers are attacked by seventeen running archers, is found in Les Dogue,

Ares del Maestrat, Castellón, Valencia.[5] At Val del Charco del Agua Amarga, Alcañiz, Aragon, seven archers with plumes on their

heads are fleeing a group of eight archers running in pursuit

A big job well done

A very big thanks to Maureen Bradford and all who helped to contribute toward the re- establishing of

Aim Archery history books along with so much more information, includes presidential Statements, Vales,

social events, life stories etc. Those of us who have not been in the Club long enjoyed passing the books

around at the AGM and learning more about the Group we are in.

The solution to November’s crossword will be

printed in next month’s edition,
