    Getting Started with Templates

    ntro

This introductory tutorial will give you an insight into the Joomla!

templating system and what you can do with it and also how

can you customize those templates according to your needs

    urpose o" templates

    * template controls the overall look and layout of a site. It provides the frameork that brings together

common elements, modules and components as ell as providing the cascading style sheet for the site. Both

the front1end and the back1end of the site have templates.

)hen Joomla! is first installed several templates are automatically included. -ou can find many more

templates at other ebsites. &ome are available ithout charge under various licenses, and some are for sale.

In addition, there are many developers available ho can make custom templates. -ou can also make your

    on template.

Templates are managed ith the Template (anager, hich is located on the 3tensions menu in the back1

end $administrator' area of your site.

    Why does Joomla! #se templates? %A real be$inners $#ide!&

The ay Joomla! is designed separates out the key tasks involved in producing a ebsite for efficient

maintenance of the softare. %ne of these tasks is to create the aesthetic $the look, feel and layout' of the

site. This includes making decisions such as hich content elements $components, modules and plugins' you

may ant to place in any given page.

)hen producing a eb page, the location of most elements ill stay the same $menus, banner locations,

sidebars etc.'. *dditionally, you ill ant to create the same look $fonts, header styles, colour scheme etc.'

for every page. or some parts of the site you may ant to alter the general feel to indicate a different

purpose for those pages $such as a blog section'. * little planning is re2uired for this, but once you have

settled on the overall layout for your site, you then have the task of producing each page of content.

*nd that5s here the template comes in. -ou can either rite all the code for each page separately, or use a

template for each ma/or section of your site so that hen you ant to create a ne page you simply 6fill in

the blanks7. %kay, perhaps it"s not that simple, but this tutorial is designed to give you a step by step guide

for effective template use, starting ith ho to use one and ending ith ho to create one for yourself.

    8. Use one of the templates supplied ith Joomla!

    9. :onload one of the many free offerings from the Internet.

;. Pay for one to be modified or produced from scratch if your needs cannot be met any other ay.

&ummary < a template controls the loo' of yo#r siteand at the same time allos the ebsite administratorfocus more on the actual content.

    /hat can ou do

    * template is used to manipulate the ay content is delivered to a eb broser or screen reader. 0ere are

some ays you can employ this on your Joomla!1poered site.

    (ayo#t

The template is the place here the design of the main layout is set for your site. This includes here you

place different elements $modules'. or eample -ou can control the placement of menus, a log in form,

    advertising banners, polls, etc.

0ote the changes in content laout!

The main body$article' of the page can be altered in style$you can select from different styles of display such

as typical blog layout, a nes article, etc' depending on the templates layout. *See the example image. Note

the differences in layout, but how the look is consistent. The sidebar of modules has been moved from left

to right and its order rearranged.

If the template is designed to provide choices, you can also =dynamically= alter the content placement on

your site, perhaps putting the main menu on the right or left side of the screen.

    Color "cheme

Using 4&& ithin the template design, you can change the colors of your backgrounds, tet, links or /ust

about anything that you could ithin your ordinary 0T(+ code. &ome templates provide a method to

change the color in template management, others re2uire you to modify the template"s .css file$s'.

    Ima$es and ffects

-ou can also control the ay images are displayed on the page, and even create flash1like effects or include

    *J*>applications such as drop1don menus.

The same applies to fonts. The designs for these are all set ithin the template"s 4&& file$s' to create a

uniform look across your entire site, hich makes it fantastically easy to change the hole look /ust by

altering one or to files rather than every single page.

    *rowser "pecific "ol#tions

    * template can be designed to alter ho it displays on different eb brosers, alloing you to take full

advantage of the latest developments ithout making your site inaccessible to those ho are not able to run
