    PAST TENSES

    Past simple tense

    Use:

    past actions which happenedone after the other

    past habit or state

    actions which happened at adefinite past time although thetime is not mentioned

    Past continuous tense

    Use:

    for action in the middle ofhappening at a stated pasttime

    for past action in progressinterrupted by another pastaction. the shorter action is in

    the past simple and the longerin the past continuous.

    Past perfect simple

    Use:

    for past action whichoccured before anotheraction or before a statedpast time

    for complete past actionwhich had visible results inthe past

    the Past perfect is the pastequivalent of the Presentperfect

    Use:

    for action continuing over aperiod up to a specific timein the past

    for past action of certainduration which had visibleresults in the past
