A hearing loss is one of the most common birth defects in newborns. Loss of hearing can impair hearing and can hinder speech and language. The early hearing

screening in newborns is very important for the improvement of communication skills

In Brief

Page 4: The Importance of Hearing Screening In Newborn Babies – Pubrica

Newborn babies undergo several examinations and assessmentsbefore leaving the hospital.

The hearing screening is one of the essential evaluation for newborn babies before leaving in the hospital.

Newborn screening and treatment help ensure the recognition as soon as possible of all babies who are deaf or hard of hearing.

They will access early intervention clinical support services that can make a big difference in their language development and communication.

Loss of Hearing Occurs In Newborn Babies

Loss of hearing is more likely to occur in:

Babies with respiratory problems that require long-term use of a respirator and certain drugs.

Early born babies (premature).

Infections babies.

Hearing screening is a first and crucial step in clinical research helping to understand whether your baby is deaf or hard to hear.

Babies with poor or deaf hearing need the right support, care and early intervention topromote healthy growth.

If the hearing condition is not known, it can have adverse effects on communication andlanguage skills of the babies.

A missed hearing loss can also have an impact on the academic achievement andsocial-emotional development of the child over the longer term.

Methods of Hearing Screening

Otoacoustic Emission (OAE):

The recording of OAEs usually takes < 1 min and can be done without experience in audiology.

Two types that are commonly used for neonatal hearing screening is Distortion product OAEs and Transient evoked OAEs.

Automated Auditory Brain Stem Response (AABR):

Auditory brainstem response is an evoked auditory potential arising from the auditory nerve.

It can detect weakness in the brainstem at the cochlea level, the auditory nerve and pathway.

Both technologies provide non-invasive monitoring of physiological behaviour.

Benefits

It is widely acknowledged that early detection of hearing loss gives children the chance to develop significantly improved language skills relative to those children who are later diagnosed.

The primary objective of early intervention in newborns with hearing impairment is to improve the communication skills of the child and to enhance the level of language development influencing cognitive and socio-emotional behavior.

Conclusion

Hearing deficiency in children around the world, including language acquisition, poses a particularly serious barrier to their full growth and education.

If the screening test indicates a possible hearing loss, further testing is required.

All babies who don't pass the screening test should be checked by a hearing specialist(audiologist) by age 3 months.

Before the baby is 6 months old, care for hearing loss should start, since it is an important time for speech and language development.
