THE LAST ICE COLLECTOR

In Ecuador, people believe that when “Taita” (kichwa word for father) Chimborazo is upset, “Mama” (mother) Tungurahua becomes anxious and “Guagua” (young) Pichincha cries.. Be a witness and become part of one of the most ancient jobs in humanity. Itinerary Early in the morning, as soon as the Inti (sun) rays touch the Andean hillsides, we leave Riobamba and we´ll be transported to the starting point of our journey where the Ancestral way is waiting for us. This Ancestral walk began a long time ago: men and women ask for volcano´s permission to climb up its ladder and collect its ice. This hard work we´ll be sharing with the only person who still does it: Baltazar Uscha, whom its 70 years old, doesn´t stop working in the area where his ancestors use to go often. We start at 4000 mts (13123ft). After 3 hours we get the first hut, where a comfortable snack will be served, between the marvelous views of the central highlands. We continue towards our second hut, located at 4800 mts (15748ft), where the ancient mines are located, here we can see (and if want help), to take ice cubes directly from the Chimborazo and to know how this activity is so important for Baltazar and share some legends about the area. Box lunch. After one hour, we return to our base community: Pulingui and have a nice time sharing with their people. Back to Riobamba. Included:

Private transportation Biligual professional licenced guide (English/French) Snack and box lunch according Itinerary Native guides Souvenir

ALTAR TREK El Altar (5319 m. / 17.451 ft.) is one the most spectacular mountains of Ecuador. The Incas called it Capac Urcu - sublime mountain. A long time ago, El Altar was the highest mountain of Ecuador, and some studies even say that it was the highest of the world. A huge eruption almost completely destroyed the cone, leaving 9 snow-capped summits in a horseshoe shape around an enormous crater lake. El Altar is part of the Sangay National Park, that is home to condors, Andean gulls, white-tailed deers and foxes.

Day 1. At 9:00 a.m. we leave Riobamba. After a 1 hour drive we reach the Hacienda Releche, at 3200 m. / 10.499 ft. altitude. We put our equipment on pack horses and start to hike up a steep hill. After 1 hour we reach the trail to El Altar and soon we will enjoy the first views of the extinct volcano and the valley of Collanes river. We continue hiking for about 5 hours until we reach the Collanes shelter at 3850 m. / 12.632 ft., where we will spend the night.

Day 2. After breakfast we follow the Collanes Plain to El Altar's crater lake. From the plateau at 4300 m. / 14.108 ft., the highest point of this trek, we have marvellous views of the turquoise-green lake and the snow-capped peaks. Condors are still seen around here. In the afternoon we return to the refuge Releche, from here we drive back to Riobamba.

DIFFICULTY: moderately difficult; a basic acclimatization is recommended

Included:

Transportation from / to Riobamba Naturalist Licenced guide (English/ French) Patent for Protected Areas Accommodation in refuge Meals and coffee, tea, purified drinking water Pack horses for the equipment Equipment
