Target audience

5
Style and fashion My ideal target audience is that of the indie genre. An indie audience typically doesn’t follow trends in fashion or music, and prefer to go against the trend and build a unique style and identity. The indie target market is a big fan of vintage clothes; dyed, patterned, or plain (rarely a logo except for band merchandise) shirts and trousers, very loose and baggy clothes, particularly denim ad leather jackets, ripped jeans, anything that could be considered 80s fashion. Their hair is probably styled in a “classic” style, heavily gelled and slicked back, or left intentionally rough, for boys, and for girls their hair is either neatly straightened or slightly curled (both hairstyles can be dyed multiple, bright colours or left natural)

Attitude

An indie audience member is typically very committed to their bands, attending the same bands gig multiple times, buying all of their songs, and knows the words to most of their songs. This could partly be due to the more personal aspect of indie bands, who by definition largely aren’t as popular as mainstream artists, meaning their audiences are a lot smaller and their portrayal as normal people (relative to the star factor pushed in mainstream music) wearing similar clothes to their target audience (as the vintage look is relatively cheap) and have worked hard to become popular.

Social aspects The typical hobbies of an indie audience member

are social activities, such as gigs, parties, and hanging out with friends. They have a disposable income so as to afford the many gigs and albums from different bands, and have a relative lack of responsibilities and free time to keep up with the volume of small indie artists. Indie media consumers would ideally have a form or social media, such as Facebook or twitter, and the less common online accounts such as sound cloud. This allows the audience member to follow their favourite bands, and discover new ones. Emerging indie bands who do not have the backing of a major label have to depend on their social media presence to attract an audience, so utilise as many different sites and outlets as possible (Instagram, sound cloud, vine, etc), leading to a large amount of indie fans having accounts on all of these.
