Crown: the BELLE CARNELL.

BELLE CARNELL, a state-of –the art Clam Harvester and Processing Factory Vessel

Astilleros de Santander (ASTANDER Shipyard - delivered this new clam harvester and processing factory vessel to the well known Canadian owners Clearwater Seafoods in early July this year. A five year old, 2.565 GT Platform Supply Vessel was purchased by the Canadian Company and taken to Astander, in the Northern Coast of Spain, where the project to convert it into Clearwater Seafoods’ Fleet Jewel of the Crown was developed jointly. Some of the major issues included in this conversion: Removal of the existing bulk cargo equipment and systems.

Fabrication and installation of two new factory decks, stern ramp, sponsons and new accommodation. Installation of a new ammonia refrigeration plant, new freezer tunnel and plate freezers.

Mounting new hydraulics systems to provide service to the winches, fishing equipment and factory systems. The new accommodation meant new cabins, rooms, A/C system, piping, electricity. Entire modification of wheelhouse equipment for navigation and fishing control. Renewal of propellers. Reconditioning of the gearboxes. Installation of other new systems: two gensets, a new dredger system, high capacity and pressure dredging pumps, new steam boiler to give service to the fish processing plant, new incinerator, a new lift, etc.

Some figures: New accommodation block increased living quarters from 16 to 41. Total steel weight added for the new decks, aft ramps, accommodation block, etc.: 530t The new electrical installation onboard involved 75.000 m of cabling.

The vast experience and reputation of Astander in the conversion market had already called the attention of Clearwater Seafoods for another conversion project in 2014: the successful lengthening and conversion of the fishing trawler ATLANTIC LEADER into a scallop harvesting and processing factory vessel definitely convinced the Canadian Company about the benefits of working with Astander in such type of projects and this led to this second contract resulting in their fleet Jewel of the Crown.

Installation of scrubbers at ASTANDER for BRITTANY FERRIES

Brittany Ferries installs scrubbers in the ferries Normandie, Cap Finistere and Barfleur in Astander.

Cap Finistere & Barfleur, at berth in AstanderThe French shipping company based in Roscoff, Brittany Ferries, which is continuously connecting Santander with the United Kingdom since 1978, has recently installed scrubbers in the vessels Normandie, Cap Finistere, Barfleur in Astander Shipyard in Santander, Spain.

Every Project took just over two months, an impressive time-scale for a ‘first off’ job of this nature, carried out in vessels which were

not designed and built considering the possibility of scrubbers installation.

The design of the systems was carried out by STX France (located in St-Nazaire and the scrubbers, design and built by Green Tech, now Yara Marine. All the vessels were equipped with seven separate scrubbers in total, one for each of the four main engines and three covering the auxiliaries.

The first vessel to be converted, the Normandie (end of 2014) was followed by the Cap Finistere (January 2015) and Barfleur (March 2015) being all of them powered by Wärtsilä four-stroke engines ‒ and receiving open loop scrubbers Every conversion Project included the fabrication of a new pump room to provide water to the seven scrubbers. The casing had to be emptied, form the E/R to the funnel, removing the silencers, in some cases the economizers and a large amount of piping, insulation and structures that had to be re-routed or modified. This is the critical part of the job, due to the space constrains and the interferences between the systems. Only an accurate planning and resources management made possible achieving the tight delivery time.

The modifications also affected to the external shape of the funnels, which had to be redesigned to host the new equipment. The new water systems passed from the new pump room through the car decks and into the casing. At this moment, the three vessels are in operation, with the new systems installed, making Brittany Ferries one the leading ferry companies with a modernized and environmental friendly fleet equipped with new systems to reduce the emissions.
