Seneca hosts annual band competitionBy NICK COHEN
The Shamong Sun
The Seneca Golden EaglesBand is marching into its ninthyear under band director KeithStyers with its largest member-ship yet. For Styers, that has beenthe goal since his first day atSeneca.
My focus and vision have al-ways been that it is more impor-tant to have more students in-volved in the band, not the compe-tition aspect, Styers said. Wehave different priorities and thatis to ensure the kids have a greatexperience, the opportunity tolearn and be a part of something. Its about the journey, not the endresult.
True to Styers vision, Senecahosted its 10th annual USBandscompetition on Saturday, Sept. 28made up of schools in the districtas well as schools from Washing-ton Township and West Windsor.
Since we hosted the competi-tion, its an exhibition, and wedont place. The competition
raised money for our program,Styers said. We dont have thebiggest competition, and werefine with that, but it does give thekids an opportunity to see whatwere doing in comparison toother bands.
According to the USBandsrulebook, USBands uses a classi-fication system based on group NICK COHEN/The Shamong Sun
Members of the Seneca High School marching band rehearse this years theme, which is My First Trip to the Magic Kingdom. Seneca hostedthe annual USBands Competition on Sept. 28, which was the first of six events in which the group will compete.please see GROUPS, page 12

By NICK COHENThe Shamong Sun
A third meeting between the ShamongBoard of Education and Shamong Town-ship Education Association with a state-appointed mediator did not lead to anybreakthroughs on a new contract, andboth parties will now enter into the fact-finding stage.
The sides met with the mediator for a
third and final time on Sept. 19. Althoughboth parties expressed optimism beforethe meeting, neither side presented anagreement the other was comfortablewith.
We are in a holding position right
now, negotiations chair Laura Hoffmansaid. We maintain that we are looking fora fair settlement.
Board president Melissa Ciliberti couldnot be reached for comment at the timethis issue went to print, but in previousconversations said she was hopeful theend of this negotiation was near.
The board and STEA have been negoti-ating toward a new contract since Decem-ber of last year. While both sides seek a
three-year deal, the salary demands havebeen the biggest obstacle. The board main-tains that the settlement the STEA is look-ing for exceeds settlements of other dis-tricts in Burlington County, while theSTEA says its teachers have the lowest
starting and ending salaries in the district, and the boards offers would allow that tocontinue.
Hoffman said that she could not com-ment on if talks had progressed from theprevious two mediation sessions but thatshe remained cautiously optimistic andthat the STEA would be open to more con-versations before the next scheduled meet-ing with the board sometime in November.
Fact-finding is a mechanism for helping
parties settle contract negotiations by hav-ing the parties submit their disputes to afact-finding panel. The fact-finding panelconsists of a neutral chair, an employer
Contract negotiations fail for third time
New Jersey residents are rich.
Really rich. Were the second-
richest state in the nation, be-
hind only those people two states to
the south in Maryland.
The median household income for
New Jersey residents is $69,667. Thats
pretty good news.
The bad news: That number is
boosted in large part by the states
ridiculously wealthy families. More
than 11 percent of families here have
an income of more than $200,000 per
year.
On the surface, the Garden States
ranking of No. 2 on the list of wealthi-
est states, compiled by 24/7 Wall St., isa positive sign to our economys health
and future prospects. Dig deeper,
though, and youll see a much differ-
ent story.
New Jerseys unemployment rate
was 9.5 percent in 2012, one of the
worst in the country. The national av-
erage was 8.1 percent. The state above
us on the rich list, Maryland, had a
low unemployment rate of 6.8 percent,
for example. Even worse, the number
of people on food stamps increased
from 8 percent in 2011 to 9.3 percent in
2012.
That is not good news.
Still, our outlook is getting better. Asof August, New Jerseys unemploy-
ment rate was 8.5 percent, according
to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Thats the lowest mark since March
2009, when it was 8.3 percent. It also
closed the gap between the national
unemployment rate, which sat at 7.3
percent in August.
But New Jersey needs to help busi-
nesses create more jobs. While the
state gained 60,300 jobs in the past 12
months, it lost 1,500 in August. From
July to August, more than 12,000 work-
ers stopped looking for work and left
the workforce.
Thats not good, either.
Gov. Christie recently revamped the
states business tax breaks in an effort
to add more jobs, but how effective
that will be might take time to tell. Its
a good first step, as any incentive to
add more jobs is a positive step, as
long as the state isnt digging a deeperdebt hole.
The bottom line is our workers need
more jobs because the fact is that,
while a small percentage of New Jer-
sey families are rich, most are still
struggling.
Were rich!!Well, at least some people are
Your thoughts
What, if anything, should our stategovernment do to incentivize businessesto add more jobs?

sues presented. The recommen-dation is non-binding, so neitherparty is forced to take actionafter the fact-finding session.
Hoffman expressed that shefelt both the board and the STEAhad reached the point of wantingthe negotiations to cease.
We dont like to focus any ofour energy on this issue. Ofcourse, the students of Shamongare always our primary focus, but neither party wants or needsthis distraction, Hoffman said.

Groups are based on thenumber of performers
and class designations to makesure bands of similar size, styleand experience are grouped to-gether to compete. A tier-basedsystem is utilized where eachcompetitive class is judged on aseparate scale that reflects the ex-pected level of proficiency.
Class A bands are judged on ascale with fundamental to inter-
mediate skills, bands classifiedas Open are judged based on in-termediate to advanced skills.Groups are based on the numberof performers.
Lenape Regional High SchoolDistrict schools do not compete inthe same group due to varyingsizes of the bands. Of the schools,Cherokee is the largest andplaced into 5A. Shawnee is con-sidered to be more experienced, but smaller in size and competesat 4 Open. Lenape competes at 2
Open, and Seneca competes at the4A level.
The Golden Eagles practiceand compete in a similar fashionto sports teams, but Styers at-
tempts to schedule practices andevents to allow students to be a
part of other clubs. We practice two days a week
in the evening, and then againFridays before football games andagain Saturdays before competi-tions, Styers said. A lot of ourstudents have jobs or want to par-ticipate in other clubs so Ive al-ways tried to make our scheduleflexible to that.
Styers credits the band reach-ing its highest level of membersat 94 to two things.
We have tremendous supportfrom our administration. Princi-pal Spektor and Bradley Bauer, the assistant principal, are verysupportive of our program andour goals for the program. Wealso have a great parent associa-tion that supports our events,Styers said. In addition to that,we have very little attrition, rarely does the program lose kidsyear to year.
Using Rocky Balboa as lastyears theme left the Golden Ea-
gles with a tough act to follow.Styers chose My First Trip to theMagic Kingdom. Fitting asSeneca performed on Main Streetin Disney World earlier this year.

The Lenape Regional HighSchool District Board ofEducation in a special meetingMonday, Sept. 9, unanimouslyapproved a three-year employ-
ment contract with theLenape District Education Asso-ciation.
The LDEA, which representsapproximately 850 teachers andother certificated staff, includingschool counselors, child studyteam professionals, media spe-cialists, nurses and athletictrainers, as well as
administrative support staff, interpreters and paraprofession-als, ratified the contract on Sept.4.
The three-year agreement in-
cludes an average salary increaseof 2.3 percent and was updated tobe compliant with currentstatutes governing public em-ployee contributions to health in-surance.
"It was important to get thecontract negotiations behind usand start off the new school yearin the right frame of mind, said
LRHSD Board Member JohnHeitmann, Jr., who chairs the ne-gotiations committee. "The staffworked well with us to get thisdone. And, the students and com-
munity will continue to benefitfrom the quality teachers, staffand programs the Lenape Dis-trict is known for.
According to LDEA PresidentJohn Faubl, the contractreceived overwhelmingsupport from the associationsmembers.
"Approving the agreement atthe start of the school year is abig morale boost for our mem-bers. We take great pride in ourwork and now we can put all ofour energies into teaching, in-stead of negotiating a contract,Faubl said.
