Rowan College at Burlington County isinviting the community to celebrate itsnew partnership with Rowan University asit unveils its new look on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

This summer, the former BurlingtonCounty College has renamed and rebrand-

ed itself as part of a new partnership withRowan University that will soon make itpossible to earn a university degree on theMount Laurel campus for about $30,000.

“Everywhere I go, I meet a student or aparent who is shocked that we have createda pathway toward a $30,000 four-year de-gree, when they are used to seeing thatprice for just one year at many universitiesthroughout the nation,” Rowan College atBurlington County President Paul Draytonsaid. “I am happy to assure them that wehave achieved a victory against the afford-ability crisis in higher education, and in-

vite everyone to celebrate this momentousoccasion for our students.”

Guests are invited to enjoy free t-shirts,refreshments from the Rowan College atBurlington County’s culinary arts pro-gram, and participate in hands-on activi-

ties led by the college’s talented faculty inareas such as biology, psychology andcriminal justice. The college’s radio sta-tion, and arts and crafts stations for chil-dren will add to the festive occasion.

At the center of the event’s happenings

is the unveiling of the new Rowan Collegeat Burlington County logo, which was se-lected with input from more than 400 facul-ty and staff members and nearly 1,700 stu-dents and alumni.

spending $1.5 million to outfit

1,000 troopers over the next

nine months with body cameras. It’s a

hefty price to pay for technology, but a

very small one when considering the

good it will do.

Body cameras for police have be-

come increasingly popular throughout

the country following police shootings

that made national headlines in places

such as Ferguson, Mo.

Troopers will wear the body cam-

eras on either their shirt or their hat,

and will be required to turn them on

during traffic stops, protests, investiga-

tions and while making arrests.

Acting state Attorney General John

Hoffman said the cameras “will act as

an objective witness in police-involved

shootings and other use-of-force inci-

dents.”

Some local police departments, such

as Glassboro, Paulsboro, Evesham and

even Rowan University, have already

adopted body cameras for their police

forces. And more could be coming, as

the state plans to use $2.5 million in

forfeiture funds to help other local de-

partments buy cameras.

Police body cameras are a wonderful

idea, and any state money that can be

used to help local departments outfit

their officers with them is a good

thing.

The safety and security of the people

of New Jersey are of the utmost im-

portance, above all other concerns of

living in our state. Any initiative that

improves that safety and security –

while at the same time serving as an

objective judge for citizens and offi-

cers – is something that should be ex-

plored and implemented.

The award is given to someonewho has made an outstandingcontribution to the culture andhistory of the Pine Barrens.

“It’s been a tradition long be-fore I became the pastor,” PastorAndrew Jamieson said. “We con-tact each township and ask them

to nominate a great volunteer or aparticularly special individual.”This year’s winner for the Sha-

mong/Indian Mills area was PaulMiller of the Indian Mills Volun-teer Fire Company.

“I received a call from thetownship administrator lettingme know of the news,” Millersaid. “I was honored by it.”

The Indian Mills Fire Compa-ny was incorporated by ShamongTownship after a public meetingwas held at the Indian Mills

School auditorium in 1942.The first building was a 24-by-

24 cinder block building, and thetownship paid 18 cents for eachcinder block. It was constructedin March 1942, and it still can beseen next to the present fire sta-tion. The company has sinceadded an EMS unit and hasgrown immensely.

Miller is the vice president of this EMS group and the first as-sistant chief of the fire unit.Miller has been a cornerstone of the group for most of its exis-tence, as he has been volunteer-ing for the Indian Mills Fire Com-pany for as long as he can remem-ber.

“I’ve been a part of it for myentire life except for when I wasaway with the military,” Millersaid.

Miller joined the military in1965 and arrived back home in1969. He was also in the reservesfor 28 years.

Miller is a lifelong resident of Shamong Township who has beenactively serving the communitysince 1963, when he was 16 yearsold.

He is still serving Shamong to

this day in many capacities at theIndian Mills Volunteer Fire Com-pany.

Over the past 52 years, Miller

has served the fire company inmany roles, including junior fire-man, fireman, first assistant, firechief, vice president and presi-dent.

“Shamong Township residentsare grateful for his dedication inkeeping the residents safe,” mem-bers of the Shamong TownshipCommittee said.

Volunteering has become ahabit of Miller’s over time as hecredited the community he grew

up in for making him accustomedto it.“I’ve always volunteered, it’s

just been second nature to me.Back in the day, everybody did itso you would just naturally get in-volved because your surround-ings were doing the same,” Millersaid. “Now it’s a dying breed. No-body really does it, and that takesa toll on the community.”

Miller’s resume is stocked full

of volunteering accomplish-ments, and this set him apart inthe eyes of the township commit-tee who selected him.

“Paul has volunteered his timefor many years, and in various ca-pacities, within our community.He has been a dedicated memberof our fire company for manyyears where he has held severaloffices including president andvice president. He has also been arespected member of the IndianMills Methodist Church, volun-teering there in several capacitiesas well,” Committeeman SeanGray said.

Miller enjoyed his time at thePine Barrens Festival when hecame out on Shamong/IndianMills night to receive his award.He was shocked at the outpouringof people the church received.

“Myself and everyone that Icame with were treated very well.It is always a well-run affair thatseems to get people from all overSouth Jersey to come out,” Millersaid.
