It made me feel grown up and I carried it proudly in my hip pocket. One day, during recess in school, I discovered that my wallet was missing. I searched all my pockets but could not find it. There was some money in the wallet and without it I could not buy anything to eat. I was close to tears. It was not so much because of losing my precious wallet but because I might get a scolding from my parents. Anyhow I went hungry that day. After recess I was in no mood to study at all. I kept thinking about how I lost my wallet and what my parents would do to me. How was I going to explain the loss? I did not know whether someone had taken it from my pocket or it had merely fallen out. I prayed that someone would find it and return it to me. My prayers came to nothing. Fortunately I did not have to pay to get on my school bus. My fare was paid monthly. When I told my mother about my loss, she was clearly angry. I received a long lecture about my carelessness. When my father came home, I received another lecture. Also I was told that there would not be any more wallets for me until I got older. So for the rest of the year and two years following, I kept my allowance in my pocket, without any wallet. I am glad to say I never lost any money again. I have learned to be more careful. It is not pleasant to lose something and then get scolded for losing it. (adapted from http://www.englishdaily626.com/junior_english_essays.php?026 ) 1. What is the text about? A. GORILLAS

Gorillas are the largest of all the primates. A male gorilla can be 180 centimeters tall and can weigh 200 kilograms. Gorillas are very strong but they do not often fight. In fact they are peaceful animals.

Gorillas live in small family groups of about 15. In a group there is one strong, older male, some young males, and a few females with their babies. They move slowly around a large area of jungle eating leaves and bushes.

In some ways gorillas are very like humans. When they are happy, they laugh and wave their arms. When they are angry, they beat their chests. When they are sad, they cry. But they cry quietly, without any tears.

Unfortunately, people hunt and kill gorillas. They also cut down and burn their trees. There are now only about 10,000 gorillas left in the world.

SCOTLAND

A lot of people think that Scotland is a part of England but this is untrue. Scotland is, in fact, a part of Great Britain. It is governed from London but in many ways it is a separate nation. It has its own capital city, Edinburgh, its own laws and its own stamps. It even has its own language, Gaelic, spoken now by only a few people on the islands.

There are only about five million Scots, and most of them live in the southern half of country called 'Lowlands', where the major cities are situated.

But most holiday visitors to Scotland go to the Highlands because of the high mountains and deep valleys, clean rivers and cold 'lochs'. The Highlands are home to many rare birds and animals, like the golden eagle and the wildcat, which are found nowhere else in Britain. It is a lonely, wild and empty land. Only two per cent of the British population live there and the population is getting smaller all the time. There is very little work so most of the young people who are born there have to move south to find a job. Perhaps the Highlands of Scotland will become the last great wilderness of Europe.

10. Why is the Highland going to be the last of the great wilderness of Europe?

A. It's a favourite place in Scotland.

B. It's home to rare birds and animals.

C. It's a lonely, wild, and empty land.

D. It 's high mountain and deep valley.

11. "... and deep valleys, clean rivers and cold lochs."

B. rivers                                D. islands

12. "...the young people who are born there have to move south to find a job.”

The word underlined refers to ….

The weather was very clear. My family and I decided to go camping last holiday. Father prepared the tent and other equipment. Mother prepared the cooking and eating utensils. I took my fishing rod and my brother brought his sport equipment. When everything was ready, we left for the camping site in countryside.

There were many campers when we arrived at the camping site. Unfortunately, the good location near the river had been occupied by other campers so we had to look for another place. Finally, we found a good place little bit further. It was near a big tree. After setting up the tent, my father and I went fishing. We joined other people sitting on the rock near the river.

In the evening, father made a fire. Mother cooked the fish we caught. I could say that it was the best fish I had ever tasted. Sleeping in the tent was a very wonderful experience. I woke up early in the morning. I felt fresh. Then I accompanied my brother playing ball.

In the afternoon, we came back home.

Little Brother, Little Sister

Maltreated by their stepmother, who was a witch, a little brother and sister fled into the woods. After running for a while, the brother said, 'I'm so thirsty. Let's find a spring and have a drink.'

As the young boy bent down to drink, his sister heard a voice which said, 'Who drinks from me will turn into a fawn.' It was the witch! Too late, the sister tried to prevent her brother from drinking. The young boy changed at once into a fawn. In tears, the little girl made a lead and collar out of her belt, and led the fawn off into the woods. There they found an abandoned cottage and lived together, far from any danger.

Page 55: Prediksi Soal Ujian Nasional Bahasa Inggris Kelas IX SMP

One day, however, the king was hunting in the woods, and he spied the fawn, which could not resist the urge to wander away from the cottage. The king and his hunters chased the fawn all the way back home. There, the king followed it into the cottage, where he found a young girl stroking the frightened animal. She was so beautiful and gentle that the king fell in love with her at once. He asked her to be his wife, and his words caused the maiden to cry for joy. When one of her tears fell on the fawn, it changed back to her brother once more. Their goodness and love had overcome the witch's evil spell, and they lived safely and happily with the king for ever after.

Fort Rotterdam lies in the centre of Makassar. It was built in 1555 in the period of Gowa Kingdom. It provided protection for the Makassar Kingdom. It used to be called Benteng Ujung Pandang. When Admiral Cornelius, a Dutch troop leader, occupied Celebes in 1667, he rebuilt it and changed its name to Rotterdam. He made Fort Rotterdam a centre of the government.

The architecture of the buildings at Fort Rotterdam resembles European styles from the medieval era, IV-XVII century. Local people know the fort as Benteng Panynyua. Panynyua means 'turtle'. If seen from the air, Fort Rotterdam looks like a turtle crawling towards the sea.

Fort Rotterdam is now a national archaeological museum. People can see many artifacts and ancient things in the museum. It is called Museum La Galigo.

Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants, and are known for their role in pollination and for producing honey and beeswax. There are nearly 20,000 known species of bees in nine recognized families though many are indescribable and the actual number is probably higher. They are found on every continent except Antarctica, in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants.

Bees have a long proboscis (a complex "tongue") that enables them to obtain the nectar from flowers. They have antennae almost universally made up of 13 segments in males and 12 in females, as is typical for the super family. Bees all have two pairs of wings, the hind pair being the smaller of the two; in a very few species, one sex or caste has relatively short wings that make flight difficult or impossible, but none are wingless.

Page 60: Prediksi Soal Ujian Nasional Bahasa Inggris Kelas IX SMP

The smallest bee is Trigona minima, a sting less bee whose workers are about 2.1 mm (5/64") long. The largest bee in the world is Megachile Pluto, a leaf cutter bee whose females can attain a length of 39 mm (1.5"). Members of the family Halictidae, or sweat bees, are the most common type of bee in the Northern Hemisphere, though they are small and often mistaken for wasps or flies.

When the cloud rises high enough the moisture freezes. And then ice crystals and snowflakes are formed. These begin to fall, turning to rain on the way down. This rain meets more moist air rising, and it is the friction between them which produces static electricity. When a cloud is fully charged with this electricit , it discharges it as a lightning flash.

From      :   [email protected]          : [email protected]       :  April 10, 2007RE         : Parking Garage problem

Dear Martin:Please regard this as a letter of apology for the recent problems that I caused you by moving your belongings in the parking garage without your permission.

Believe me I had no intention of causing you any problems. Over the long weekend I decided to rearrange my space in the garage. I installed new shelving on the front wall opposite my parking space. While I was at it I thought I would also tidy up the entire garage. Then I noticed that your boxes of books were stored dangerously close to the electric heating element. So, I took the liberty of moving those boxes to the other side of the garage. I didn't consider at the time that this would block the entry and exit of your vehicle. After you brought this to my attention Monday evening I immediately moved your boxes back to where they were stored originally. As you suggested, by stacking them carefully I was able to place them so that there was sufficient safe clearance from the heating element. I trust you will find everything in order now.

I'm really sorry that I didn't check with you first before moving

CACTUS

A cactus (plural: cacti) is any member of the plant family Cactaceae, native to the Americas. They are often used as ornamental plants, but some are also crop plants. Cacti are grown for protection of property from wild animals, as well as many other uses.

Cacti are part of the plant order Caryophyllales, which also include members like beets, gypsophila, spinach, amaranth, tumbleweeds, carnations, rhubarb, buckwheat, plumbago, bougainvillea, chickweed and knot grass.

Cacti are unusual and distinctive plants, which are adapted to extremely arid and hot environments, showing a wide range of anatomical and physiological features which conserve water. Their stems have adapted to become photosynthetic and succulent, while the leaves have become the spines for which

Page 120: Prediksi Soal Ujian Nasional Bahasa Inggris Kelas IX SMP

cacti are well known.

Cacti come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. The tallest is Pachycereus pringlei, with a maximum recorded height of 19.2 m, and the smallest is Blossfeldia liliputiana, only about 1 cm in diameter at maturity.

Cactus flowers are large, and like the spines and branches arise from aureoles. Many cactus species are night blooming, as they are pollinated by nocturnal insects or small animals, principally moths and bats. Cacti range in size from small and globular to tall and columnar.

An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when one celestial object moves into the shadow of another. The term is most often used to describe either a solar eclipse, when the Moon's shadow crosses the Earth's surface, or a lunar eclipse, when the Moon moves into the shadow of the Earth.

Eclipses may occur when the Earth and the Moon are aligned with the Sun, and the shadow of one body cast by the Sun falls on the other. So at New Moon (or rather Dark Moon), when the Moon is in conjunction with the Sun, the Moon may pass in front of the Sun as seen from a narrow region on the surface of the Earth and cause a solar eclipse. At Full Moon, when the Moon is in opposition to the Sun, the Moon may pass through the shadow of the Earth, and a lunar eclipse is visible from the night half of the Earth.

An eclipse does not happen at every New or Full Moon, because the plane of the orbit of the Moon around the Earth is tilted with respect to the plane of the orbit of the Earth around the Sun, so as seen from the Earth, when the Moon is nearest to the Sun (New Moon) or at largest distance (Full Moon), the three bodies usually are not exactly on the same line.

17.  When does a lunar eclipse happen?A. in the morningB. in the afternoon    C. in the eveningD. in the midday

18.  What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A. We can see the surface of the Moon from the EarthB. The Sun is the biggest planet in our solar system.C. An eclipse never happens at New or Full Moon.D. The Sun and the Moon rotate on the same line.

Maura, who liked to be thought of as the most beautiful and powerful queen of Arabia, had many suitors. One by one she had discarded them, until her list was reduced to just three sheiks, all equally young and handsome, rich and strong.1t was very hard to decide who would be the best of them.

One evening, Maura disguised herself and went to the camp of three sheiks, as they were about to have dinner, and asked them for something to eat.

The first gave her some leftover food; the second gave her some unappetizing camel's tails; the third sheik, why called Hakim, offered her some of the most tender and tasty meat. After dinner, the disguised queen left the sheiks' camp.

The following day the queen invited the three sheiks to dinner at her palace. She ordered her servants to give each exactly what they had given her the evening before.

Hakim, who received a plate of delicious meat, refused to eat it if the other two could not share it with him, and this act finally convinced Queen Maura that he was the man for her.

MAKING CANDLES

Making coloured and scented candles is really quick and simple. What's more, you'll save so much money. If making candle is easy, why do you ever buy one from a shop? What you need in making candle are wax, moulds, wick, dye discs, essential oils, and a double boiler. All these materials are available from craft shops. Or if you do not want to buy them, you can improvise with an old saucepan, Pyrex jug, or even a sturdy can, in a pot of water. After providing the materials, follow this procedure or instruction in making candles!

First of all, melt the wax. All wax has a flash point, so to prevent it bursting into flames; you must melt it in a double boiler, with water in the bottom of the pan. Then, prepare the mould with the wick. Thread the wick through the mould and make sure that you leave a good few centimeters sticking out of the hole in the bottom.

After that, add the scent. If you want a scented candle, add a few drops of essential oil to the melted wax. You can use any essential oil you like, as long as it doesn't contain water.

Next step, pour the wax into the mould. Try and tip the wax into the mould quickly, all in one go, to

Page 127: Prediksi Soal Ujian Nasional Bahasa Inggris Kelas IX SMP

minimize spillage and air bubbles.

Then, release the bubbles and top it up. Releasing the air bubbles will eventually make the candle sink, so you will need to top it up with more melted wax. Finally, remove it from the mould. After four or five hours, the candle can be taken out of its mould.

Your candle is now ready for display. Remember, you must always leave it for a day before lighting it.
