Many developing countries survive by unregulated slash and burn agriculture, uncontrolled fuel

production, and by allowing their animals to overgraze. About 25% of the wood taken from tropical

forests is used for the countries industrial materials or sold to advanced countries for foreign

    currency.

The tropical forests which have been depleted by uncontrolled logging are supossed to be

replenished, and this must be really hard work. The climatic and soil conditions may not allow newforests to be cultivated, and forestry and renewal techniques need further development.

Deforestation will make the quality of the forest decrease. They cannot provide people with

sufficient fresh water, food, fuel, timber, medicine, etc. Which are very important for their life.

Animal extinction cannot be avoided either. Furthermore, deforestation may also result in soil

erosion, landslides, fire, and global warming. Uncontrolled logging will cause deforestation, and if

the destruction of the forests proceeds uncontrolled, the area of tropical forests will turn into a

    desert.

In 1987 the advanced and developing countries had begun to make cooperative efforts towards

solving the deforestation problem. The Tropical Forestry Action Plan (TFAP), coordinated by the FAO,

is trying to meet the needs of developing countries and to conserve tropical forests. It is working to

improve the lives of villagers in agricultural and mountainous areas, by increasing food prouductionand employment opportunities, reforming slash and burn cultivation, introducing methods that will

arrow forests renewal and providing alternative fuel supplies. Five target areas were decided :

forestry use, land use, wood for fuel and energy, conservation of tropical forests ecosystems, and

    the establishment of institutions.

Indoensia is one of the countries that works hard for forest conservation. In 1986/1987 the area

planned for reforestation was 95, 178 hectares, and for afforestation was 236,321 hectares.

The word co-operative derived from the word co-operate, meaning to work together to bring

about a result. Co-operative society is a group of people who join together to produce or distribute

goods for their own benefit and who share any profit or loss.

The purpose of setting up co-operatives is mainly to avoid payments to the middlemen such as

agents, traders, shopkeepers etc. Who often try to get as much profit as they can.

It is quite natural that when the stock of goods is greater than the needs, the price will fall. On the

contrary, when the demand is greater than the offer, the price will rise. Thats why we have to keep

    supply and demand in balance.

It means that the amount of commodity offered and the one required must be equal. Supply and

demand are the important factors that can regulate price.Middlemen always take good chances in any commerce situations. They want to but things at the

lowest possible price and sell them at the highest possible price in order to get much profit. And it is

the consumers and the producers as well who suffer. To avoid this bad situation it is necessary to set

    up co-coperatives.

To stop such bad practice done by traders, the goverment launches a great campaign to set up co-

operatives. Almost in every village there is a co-operative which is popularly calles Koperasi Unit

    Desa, abbreviated to KUD.

The KUD helps farmers get the supply of seeds, fertilizer, and sell the products. Moreover it gives

some help to solve their financial problems by giving loan with small interest. The existence of the

co-operatives has proved to give much benefit, especially to the rural society.
