Hyperkalaemia in an elderly patient: case reportA 98-year-old woman developed hyperkalaemia while
receiving memantine. The woman, who had a history of Alzheimer’s disease and
dementia, had been hospitalised after breaking her leg. Afterbeing admitted, she developed hyperactive delirium withworsening insomnia that was complicated by her dementia. She was diagnosed with delirium complicated by dementia, and she received memantine 5 mg/day [route not stated]; herdosage was increased to 10 mg/day, 3 days later. She was alsoreceiving unspecified antibacterials and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. Her psychotic manifestations improved but,5 days after starting the drug, laboratory tests showed that herpotassium level had increased as had her serum creatinine andBUN levels.
It was concluded that memantine had worsened thewoman’s renal function; the drug was discontinued and herserum potassium level subsequently normalised.
