Two weeks ago I went to Semarang to attend my cousin'swedding. I was there for four days. I was involved in thepreparation of the wedding ceremony. Like other Javanesewedding ceremonies it has several complicated traditional rituals.The first ceremony was Siraman (bathing ceremony). Siramanmeans take a bath. II. Essay.

Last month my family and I went to Toraja to attend Grandpasfuneral. It was my first time to go to such a ceremony. We gatheredthere with our kin in the ceremony.

The funeral was performed in two phases. First, we slaughtered thepigs and buffaloes, and then moved the corpse to face north. In thisceremony we wore black clothes. After that, the corpse was placed in asandal wood coffin. Then, it was brought out of the house and placedon an open platform beneath the granary. Meanwhile, my uncle, mybrother, and I prepared the wooden puppet and a funeral tower calledlakian. The next phase of the ceremony was held in this place. Thecoffin is borne from the house and placed in the lakian. During the day,

there were also buffalo matches. They were great matches. In thenight, we were feasting, chanting, and dancing.

On the last day, the grandpas coffin were lowered from the funeraltower and brought up to the mountain side family graveyard. It wasfollowed by great shouting and excitement from the relatives and theguests. Finally, we installed the wooden puppet on a high balconywhere other puppets representing the members of a whole family werealready there.

The funeral ceremonies made my family and me tired. However,we were grateful because it ran smoothly.

Everybody should change their way of life to reduce global warming.There are several things that we can do. One of them is by buying andconsuming fresh local groceries as much as possible. Smoking is really good for tobacco companies because they domake much money from smoking habit. Smoking however is notgood for every body else.

There once were two best friends named Damon and Phintias. Theylived in Syracuse, Sicily in the 4th century BC. They were philosophersof Pythagorean School.One day Phintias was sentenced to death by Dionysius the Younger,the ruler of the city, for plotting against his rule. Phintias then begged

for permission to go home to finish his private affairs before hesexecuted. Dionysius of course refused his request. Phintias felt verysad and hopeless. But then, Damon came to Dionysius and begged togrant Phintiass request. Damon loyally offered to replace Phintiaswhile he is gone. He is willing to take Phintiass place in prison.Dionysius then agreed and granted their request.Phintias was very happy and thankful for his friends sacrifice. Hepromised Damon that he will returned as soon as possible. He startedhome as fast as he can.Days gone by and Damon waited very patiently in jail. But until the daybefore his execution, Phintias had not returned. And on his executionday Phintias still had not returned. Damon knew that he had to takePhintiass place and get executed if Phintias didnt show up.It turned out that Phintias had tried to keep his promise to his best

friend, but he cannot. He got delayed on his way back. Phintias heartbeat fast. He felt very uneasy. He feared that he would be too late, andDamon, his faithful friend will get executed because of him. Dionysiustold Damon that its the execution day and since Phintias had notreturned he had to take his place. Incredibly, just as Damon was aboutto die in his place, Phintias arrived. He shouted to stop the execution.He felt so relief that his friend is still alive. He apologized to Damon forhis delay. Damon said that its alright and he told Phintias that hetrusted him. Dionysius was so impressed by this example of loyalty thathe pardoned Phintias and asked to share their friendship.
