sumber bergerak. Pola sebaran SO42- dan NO3
- dalam air hujan terkumpul di bagian utara
sebelah timur disebabkan arah angin dan topografi Kota Semarang. Rumusan model adalah
𝐶𝑆𝑂2,𝑁𝑂2=

ABSTRACT
Some researches that correlate SO2 in the air with SO42- in rain water to various places have
been published. The researches generally are still limited to the correlation between the
concentration of pollutants in the air and in rain water. In this study, has conducted the effects
of SO2 and NO2 emission sources, both mobile and stationary sources, to SO42- and NO3
- in
rainwater, has been carried out by taking the location of Semarang. Capital city of Central Java
has been given as the center of economic growth in Central Java which has a policy of
development as a city of industry, commerce, service and education. The impacts of this policy
potentially cause air pollution and acid rain. This is a descriptive observational study. Study
begins by identifying local emissions sources which affect the dispersion of SO2, NO2 in the air
and SO42-, NO3
- in rainwater; analyzing SO2, NO2 in the air and SO42-, NO3
- in rainwater by
colorimetric analysis method; and analyzing the effect of SO2, NO2 from emission sources to
SO42-, NO3
- in the rain with a correlation method. Dispersion model of SO42-and NO3
- in
rainwater is also proposed at the end of the study. The results indicated that SO2 and NO2
emissions from 99 stationary emission sources amounted to 9,999.50 tons/year and 3,398.94
tons/year; and SO2 and NO2 emissions of 47 main roads amounted to 366.09 tons/year and
8,001.16 tons/year, respectively. SO42- concentrations in rainwater from 1.69 to 9.17 mg/l and
NO3- concentrations of 0.01 to 2.89 mg/l. Effect of SO2 emission sources in Semarang against
SO42- and NO3
- in rainwater average of 2.65% and 33.38% in a sequence. SO2 dispersion
patterns tend to be concentrated near the stationary emission source, while NO2 tends to spread
throughout the city because of the influence of mobile sources. SO42-and NO3
- dispersion
patterns in the rainwater accumulated in the north east due to the wind direction and topography
of Semarang. Formula model is 𝐶𝑆𝑂2,𝑁𝑂2=
0,117𝑄𝑝

RINGKASAN DISERTASI
MODEL SEBARAN SO42- DAN NO3
- DALAM AIR HUJAN
DI KOTA SEMARANG
A. PENDAHULUAN
Pertumbuhan industri sebesar 1%
mengakibatkan peningkatan emisi polutan total sebesar 11,8% (Cherniwchan, 2012). Emisi
penduduk (Mukherjee and Sovacool, 2012).
RPJMD Kota Semarang tahun 2010 – 2015 menetapkan arah kebijakan Kota Semarang
pertumbuhan industri tahun 2005 sebesar 13,6%; tahun 2006 sebesar 2,6%; 2007 sebesar
Sebelah selatan: Srondol Kulon. Sebelah timur: Kawasan Industri Terboyo, Muktiharjo,
Banjardowo dan Plamongan sari. Sebelah barat: kawasan Industri Tugu, Candi, Tambakaji dan
Jatibarang.
(bulan Juli – September), musim basah tahun 2013 - 2014 (bulan Oktober 2013 – Mei 2014)
atmosfer dalam American Standard for Testing Material ASTM D1607-91 (1995) dan diadopsi
xxviii
Waktu
pengukuran dilakukan pada pagi (pukul 06.00 – 08.00), siang (pukul 08.00 – 15.00), sore (pukul
15.00 – 19.00) dan malam hari (pukul 19.00 – 22.00). Perhitungan emisi SO2 dan NO2
menggunakan faktor emisi menurut PERMENLH No. 12 tahun 2012. Derajat keasaman (pH)
Standar Nasional Indonesia SNI 06-6989.11-2004. Pengukuran daya hantar listrik (DHL)
menggunakan metode Conductivity meter Standar Nasional Indonesia SNI 06-6989.1:2004.
Konsentrasi SO42- menggunakan metoda Turbidimetri Standar Nasional Indonesia SNI
Standar Nasional Indonesia SNI 6989.74:2004. Pengukuran SO42- dan NO3
- dilakukan oleh
Laboratorium terakreditasi ISO/IEC SNI 17025:2008 yaitu Laboratorium Balai Pengujian dan
Laboratorium Lingkungan Hidup (BPL2H) Badan Lingkungan Hidup Provinsi Jawa Tengah
dan Laboratorium Balai Pengujian dan Informasi Konstruksi (BPIK) Dinas Cipta Karya dan
Tata Ruang Provinsi Jawa Tengah.
C. HASIL DAN PEMBAHASAN
1. Kondisi Fisik Kota Semarang
xxx
3. Sumber Emisi SO2 dan NO2
menanamkan modal (Pemerintah Kota Semarang 2010). Hal ini menyebabkan terjadinya
pertumbuhan berbagai jenis usaha baik industri manufakturing, jasa perbengkelan, hotel,
Sebagian besar
air hujan mempunyai pH normal (pH mendekati 7).
efek ion Hidrogen [H+] (Tietenberg, 2003). Pelarutan logam menyebabkan bertambahnya
membentuk SO42-. Pengaruh sumber-sumber emisi SO2 di Kota Semarang terhadap SO4
2- dalam
air hujan rerata sebesar 2,65%.
panjang. Transformasi SO2 paling mudah berekasi dengan OH dengan life time 26 hari
(Atkinson, 1998).
mencapai jarak ratusan kilometer.
Koefisien determinasi (R2)
menunjukkan nilai mendekati 1,0. Koefisien determinasi untuk SO2 sebesar 0,87 dan NO2
sebesar 0,93, sehingga berdasarkan koefisien determinan kinerja model masih dalam batas
diterima. Uji kesalahan berdasarkan RMSE (root mean square error) menunjukkan bahwa nilai
RMSE untuk SO2 sebesar 0,11 dan NO2 sebesar 0,58. Uji eror berdasrkan MAE (mean absolute
diterima.

SUMMARY
DISPERSION MODEL OF SO42- AND NO3
- IN RAINWATER IN
SEMARANG CITY
A. INTRODUCTION
Air pollution and acid rain are serious environmental issues (Larsen et al., 1999). Air
pollution caused by the entry of pollutants into the atmosphere is the impact of economic
development (Chernichan, 2012). Industrial growth by 1% led to an escalation in total pollutant
emissions by 11.8% (Cherniwchan, 2012). Pollutant emissions in Asia are growing rapidly in
line with economic growth in the region (Chantara, 2012). The energy consumption of fossil
fuels in Asia presumed doubled in the last two decades. It is estimated that in 2030 the
consumption reached 6.3 Btoe (billions tons of oil equivalent) caused by urbanization,
industrialization and population growth (Mukherjee and Sovacool, 2012).
NO2 and SO2 emissions into the atmosphere can be oxidized to form secondary
pollutants such as nitric acid (HNO3) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Both the acid is a strong acid
and highly soluble in water so as bring about the pH of rainwater declines to <5.6 or often
referred to as acid rain. Rainwater that had the acid can lead environmental degradation.
Increased acidity in water bodies (rivers and lakes) is able to cause toxic effects (toxicity) in
animals and plants that live therein, especially the fish. Many species of fish could live at pH>
5.5, but only a few species that are capable of survive below pH ≤ 5 (Tietenberg, 2003).
In Indonesia, according to Deputy for Environmental Pollution Control of Ministry of
Environment, based on data for 2001-2009 acid rain occurrences have transpired in several
cities inter alia Jakarta, Serpong, Kototabang, Bandung and Maros. Rainwater in those cities is
having a pH of 5.40 to 4.30 (www.antaranews.com).
Semarang is the capital city and a center of economic growth in Central Java. RPJMD
of Semarang in 2010 - 2015 defines the policy direction of Semarang City evolve as city of
industry, commerce, services and education. Urban development may induce urbanization and
soaring population. The population in 2012 as 1,558,380 inhabitants and a population growth
rate of 0.96% per year (BPS of Semarang, 2013). The number of people in Semarang City is
xxxviii
derived from the natural growth of births and mortality also population growth due to
urbanization with the objective of education and employment.
Industrial development in Semarang City of year 2005 - 2009 has fluctuated viz.
industrial growth in 2005 amounted to 13.6%; 2006 amounted to 2.6%; 2007 amounted to
10.6%; 2008 amounted to 5.9% and 2009 amounted to 0.17% (Government of Semarang City,
2010). The development of industrial areas established in the development region especially in
the border regions where Southern (Srondol Kulon); Eastern (Terboyo Industrial Area,
Muktiharjo, Banjardowo and Plamongan Sari) and Western (Tugu Industrial Area, Candi,
Tambakaji and Jatibarang). Centralization of Industry only in one area potentially leads a
pollutants accumulations and pollution.
On aforementioned description, the Semarang City development as city of industry,
commerce, services and education; rising transportation; increased fuel consumption as well as
acid rain indication in several cities in Indonesia, so there should be a study to analyze
occurrence of acid rain by doing research on SO2 and NO2 emissions from industrial activities
and transport; SO2 and NO2 concentrations in ambient air; pH, SO42- and NO3
- in rain water;
the effect of SO2 and NO2 from industrial activities and transport on SO42- and NO3
- in rainwater
and to develop models of acid rain in order to define the dominant emissions source which
cause acid rain in certain areas in Semarang City so do efforts to control and prevent of acid
rain.
Based on the above issues can be formulated as the following research objectives.
e. Assessing sources of SO2 and NO2 emissions from industrial activities and transport as
well as dispersion pattern of SO2 and NO2 in Semarang City.
f. Assessing characteristics of pH, EC, SO42- and NO3
- in rainwater in Semarang City.
g. Assessing the impact of SO2 and NO2 emissions from industrial activities and
transportation on SO42- and NO3
- in rainwater in Semarang.
h. Creating dispersion models of SO2 and NO2 in ambient as well as SO42- and NO3
- in
rainwater in Semarang City.
xxxix
This research needs to be established in an effort to mitigate the impact of industrial
development and transportation of Semarang City on SO2 and NO2 pollution through the
identification and assessment of the dominant sources of SO2 and NO2 emissions in Semarang
City that affect the SO2 and NO2 in the atmosphere as well as SO42- and NO3
- in rainwater in
Semarang City.
B. RESEARCH METHODS
This research is an observational quantitative descriptive research. Based on the
analysis, is a descriptive study to acquire a picture of emissions sources, air pollution and acid
rain characteristics in the study area. Based on the scope of this study, is a field observation
research and researcher does not have direct control over the independent variable because the
phenomenon have been occurred or difficult to manipulated. Based on the scope of time, is
cross-sectional study because only conducted on the state of research. Based on the relationship
between variables, is an analytical study to determine the correlation among related variables.
The population in this study was all rainfall occurrence and rainwater as samples were
assembled at the study site. The amount of rainwater samples at each location is 7-12 samples.
The variables consisted of the dependent variable, independent variable and associated variable.
Dependent variables are the degree of acidity (pH), SO42- and NO3
- in rainwater. Independent
variables are SO2 and NO2 in the atmosphere and emission sources. Associated variables are
meteorological factors (wind direction, wind speed, air temperature and air pressure).
Meteorological data attained from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) of
Semarang. Data concentrations of SO2 and NO2 in ambient air are data obtained from
Environmental Agency of Semarang City and Central Java province, Environmental
Management and Monitoring Plan Report of Companies in Semarang City in the dry season of
2012 (July - September), the wet season of 2013 - 2014 (October 2013 - May 2014) and dry
season of 2013 (June to September).

C. RESULT AND DISCUSSION
1. Physical Condition of Semarang City
The physical conditions of Semarang City have heterogeneous surface, hilly areas,
lowland and coastal areas with an altitude of 0 to 348 m above sea level. The dominant wind
direction in Semarang on January came from north to west; February to March came from the
Northwest; whereas late April to mid May came from the east. Wind direction of Mid May to
late June encounter many changes from the northwest, north, northeast, east to southeast. Wind
speed blowing in Semarang City less than 0.5 m/sec reached 64.39%. Classification of daily
atmospheric stability in Semarang on January 2013 - June 2013 changing along with changes
in wind speed and intensity of the sun. Atmospheric stability of January to February 2013 tends
xli
in an unstable category (Class B) while March to June 2013 tends to be in the category of
unstable - very unstable (Class A-AB).
2. Concentration of SO2 and NO2 in Ambient Air on Wet and Dry Season
Concentration of SO2 and NO2 in ambient air is accumulated from various emissions
sources. The existence of SO2 and NO2 augmented by emissions and dwindled due to a chemical
reaction to form other compounds lead a removal process caused by the influence of Earth's
gravity and removal by rainwater as well as move to follow the wind movement (Manahan,
2000). Dynamics of the atmosphere ensued on the difference in SO2 and NO2 concentration.
Concentrations of SO2 and NO2 in ambient air in the wet season period of November 2012 -
April 2013 above the ground level are 0.17 - 46.73 µg/m3 and 0.01 - 123.80 µg/m3, respectively.
SO2 concentration in the dry season of May to October 2011 was 3.31 - 145.80 µg/m3,
and NO2 concentration was 11.36 - 138.40 µg/m3, whereas SO2 concentration in 2012 was 37.00
- 111.00 µg/m3, and NO2 concentration was 3.19 - 113.30 µg/m3. The highest SO2 concentration
in the monitoring location was close to the industrial area where was in Lamicitra Industrial
Area amounted of 145.80 µg/m3 in 2011 and in Wijaya Kusuma Industrial Area amounted of
111.10 µg/m3 in 2012. While the highest NO2 concentration was near the highway. In 2011, the
highest NO2 concentrations occured in Pandaranan Street amounted of 138.40 µg/m3, whereas
in 2012 occurred in Kaligawe Street with a concentration of 110.11 µg/m3.
Comparison between descriptive statistical test and clustering test among SO2 and NO2
concentrations in the wet and dry months at the lowest concentration and also the mean of
lowest cluster showed that SO2 and NO2 concentration in the wet months is lower than dry
months. This means the washout by rainwater diminish SO2 and NO2 concentration in ambient
air which indicates the impact of wet deposition by rainwater lead to cleaner atmosphere (Huang
et al, 2011).
3. SO2 dan NO2 Emission Sources
a. Stationary Emission Source
In 2009, Semarang City achieved the level of Pro-Invest ranked 6th in Central Java and
ranked 13th in National which able to increase the investors attractiveness to invest (Semarang
City Government 2010). This leads to the growth of various types of businesses both
xlii
manufacturing industry, workshop services, hotels, shops and others. Manufacturing industry
in Semarang thrive in industrial areas where in the southern part is Srondol Industrial Area; the
eastern part are Terboyo Industrial Area, Muktiharjo, Banjardowo and Plamongan Sari; and the
western part are Tugu Wijaya Kusuma Industrial Area, Candi, Tambakaji and Jatibarang.
Industrial placement in an industrial area enable for many emission sources (stacks) contained
in a region. Air pollution can befall when ambient air pollution caused by the contribution of
many emissions sources. The amount of SO2 emitted by 99 stationary emission sources of 27.40
tons/day or a total of 9,999.50 tons/year and NO2 emissions by 9.31 tons/day or 3,398.94
tons/year.
b. Mobile Emission Source
SO2 and NO2 emissions from mobile sources depend on traffic density and passing
vehicles type. The traffic density on the highway is highly fluctuating and changes arise very
quickly from time to time. In general tendency, Semarang traffic density can be divided into 4
(four) which are dense in the morning occurred at 06:00 - 08:00, normal during the day at 8:00
- 15:00, dense in the afternoon at 15:00 - 19:00 and normal in the night at 19:00 - 22:00.
Whereas, traffic density which after 22:00 tends to be low when compared during the day. SO2
and NO2 emissions from transport of 47 main roads in Semarang amounted of 65.28 g/s or
1.003 tons/day, and 1,444.97 g/s or 21.921 tons/day, respectively. Dominant roads of SO2 and
NO2 emitter are toll road segment of Gayam, Tembalang and Jatingaleh (Banyumanik toll road
segment had not been opened yet for trucks and buses at the time of the study held); primary
arterial road such as Jl. Siliwangi, Jl. Yos Sudarso, Jl. Kaligawe and secondary arterial roads
such as Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan, Jl. Majapahit (Gayam - Pedurungan), Jl. Woltermonginsidi,
which the main sources are from buses and trucks.
4. Characteristics of Acid Rain
The rainy season of Semarang City occurred in November to April with peak rainfall in
the month of January to February. Rainfall occurence of Semarang City come about in almost
every month of the year. The degree of acidity of rainwater is not the same in every rainfall
occurence. Rainwater fell in locations and at different times have different pH. Most of the
rainwater has a normal pH (pH close to 7). Rainfall with a pH below 5.6 occurred in 3 samples
(3%) cases which are in Kandri Gunungpati, Ngaliyan and Wonodri Sendang.
xliii
SO42- concentration averages ranged from 1.69 - 9.17 mg/l. The lowest concentrations
occurred in Meteseh of 1.45 mg/l and the highest occured in Sendang Mulyo of 9.16 mg/l. There
is difference of average NO3 concentration on each measurement location which has a large
range of values. Average NO3 concentration ranged from 0.01 - 2.89 mg/l. The lowest
concentrations occurred in Mijen of 0.01 mg/l and the highest occured in Tlogosari of 2.89
mg/l.
Rainwater containing acid is able to cause environmental degradation. Currently, there
is acid rain occurence in various countries which cause environmental degradation. Crops
damage has occurred as a result of acid rain on forests in Germany and Northern California.
Increased acidity in water bodies (rivers and lakes) cause toxic effects (toxicity) in animals and
plants that live therein, especially the fish and only few species that are capable of survive below
pH ≤ 5 (Tietenberg, 2003). In Canada, more than 50% of lakes have a pH ≤ 5.5 (Bellehumeur
et al, 2000). In northern Italy, the rainfall with an average pH of 5.2 led to a decrease in nutrient
concentrations as plant nutrients (Bini, et.al., 1998). In Shaoshan China, acid rain causes
leaching of Ca2+, K+ and Cl- in the forest canopy (Xiang R., et.al., 2008). Corrosion in buildings,
electricity networks, metallic equipment and materials due to the effects of hydrogen ions [H
+] (Tietenberg, 2003). Dissolving of metal will increase the metal content in the water causing
other effects due to metal pollution in water (Cunningham, 2004; Manahan, 2000).
On the other hand, SO42- and NO3
- are nutrients that plants need. Plants necessitate of N
element on growth and development. Plants contain enough elements of N will have dark green
color leaves and a high chlorophyll content. Deficiency of N in the plant lead leaf chlorosis,
slow growth and become stunted. Excess of N lead increased vegetative growth and reduced
productivity. Most elements of N absorbed in the form of NO3- and NH4
+. Sulfate ion is S
element source for plants that serve to form the enzymes, vitamins, stimulate nodulation and N
fixation which are essential in the formation of chlorophyll.
According to BMKG of Semarang, Semarang average rainfall within the last 30 years
reaching 2,879 mm. Width area of Semarang is 373.70 km2, the average concentration of sulfate
is 3.39 mg/l and nitrate is 0.57 mg/l so that wet deposition of SO42- is 4,228.22 tons/year or
11.31 tons/km2/year, while the average nitrate concentration is 0.57 mg/l so as to the wet
deposition of NO2 is 0.61 tons/year or 1.64 tons/km2/year. The content of sulfate and nitrate in
rainwater in the form of SO42- and NO3
- has benefits for plants as nutrients to meet the needs of
xliv
S and N elements, but when too many elements of N lead greater vegetative growth and inhibit
plant productivity.
SO2 and NO2 dispersion patterns are influenced by Semarang City topography. The
wind from the northwest - north moved to south crashing hills in southern Semarang thus turn
directions causes SO2 and NO2 concentration accumulation in the north east of Semarang. SO2
dispersion patterns tend to be concentrated in the northern region due to the dominant source
of SO2 derived from stationary sources and beyond in the northern Semarang. NO2 dispersion
patterns tend to be more spread out than SO2. There is more equitable dispersion of NO2 in all
areas of the city due to influence of mobile emission sources.
5. The Impact of SO2 and NO2 Emission Sources on SO42- and NO3
- in Rainwater
Effect of SO2 emission sources from mobile and stationary sources on SO42- in rainwater
is defined by comparing SO42- formed of SO2 in the atmosphere by Law of Henry and SO4
2- in
rainwater measurement results. SO42- formation of SO2 through the mechanism of SO2
dissolution, dissolved SO2 dissociation and oxidation. Effect of SO2 emission sources in
Semarang City on SO42- in rainwater is average of 2.65%. Thus, SO4
2- in rainwater that fell in
Semarang is added from other region contained in the clouds. SO2 is a chemical compound that
is slow to react with other compounds in the atmosphere and have a long life time.
Transformation easiest SO2 reacts with OH with a life time of 26 days (Atkinson, 1998). In that
time, the distribution of SO2 by the influence of wind movement can reach distances of
hundreds of kilometers. SO2 emissions from sources in the city of Semarang spread with the
wind to other areas and SO2 emissions from sources in other areas within several hundred
kilometers can menyevbar in Semarang. In the wet season when the air contains a lot of water
vapor, SO2 in the form of dissolved gases and aerosols in the cloud. SO2 sources around the
city of Semarang derived from natural and anthropogenic activities. In the north, the source of
SO2 from the oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) emitted by organisms in the sea. In the west,
SO2 comes from industrial activities in Kaliwungu Kendal as well as activities in the lane
highway north coast. In the east, SO2 comes from industrial activities in Sayung Demak and
activities pantura lane highway. In the south, apart from industries and transport in the district
of Semarang, a source of SO2 sulfatara smoke coming from Mount Merapi. SO2 sources around
the city of Semarang affect the content of SO42- in rainwater that fell in the city of Semarang.
xlv
Effect of NO2 emission sources from mobile and stationary sources on NO3 in rainwater
is determined by comparing NO3 formed of NO2 in the atmosphere by Law of Henry and NO3
in rainwater measurement results. Effect of NO2 emission sources in Semarang City on NO3 in
rainwater is average of 33.35%. Thus, NO3 in rainwater that fell in Semarang is more from
other region contained in the clouds. Thus, NO3- in rainwater that fell in Semarang influenced
by the source of NO2 emissions from industry and transport in Demak regency, Semarang and
Kendal.
6. Dispersion Model of Acid Rain
Acid rain models developed to obtain a picture of the atmosphere system on SO2 and NO2
concentration in the presence of SO42- and NO3
- formation due to the influence of rainfall
occurrences with equation; 𝐶𝑆𝑂2,𝑁𝑂2=
0,117𝑄𝑝
𝑈.𝜎𝑦.𝜎𝑧. cos 𝛼 . (1 − 𝑒−𝐾𝑤.𝑡).
Model validation ensured by comparing SO2 and NO2 concentration predictions using the
model with SO2 and NO2 observed data by Pearson correlation method, RMSE, MAE and Index
of Agreement as well as visually using graph which is presented in Table below.
Table 1. Model Validation

Adapted from Research Dissertation
According to Model Validation Tables, Pearson correlation of SO2 and NO2 between
observations and predictions of 0.93 and 0.96, respectively showed strong correlation
xlvi
(correlation value is greater than 0.8) and significance (p) is less than 0.05 so that the correlation
between observations and predictions are significant at the level of strong correlation. The
coefficient of determination (R2) indicates the value of approximately 1.0. The SO2 and NO2
coefficient of determination is 0.87 and 0.93, so the performance of the model notwithstanding
within acceptable limits. Test of error based RMSE (root mean square error) shows that the
RMSE values for SO2 and NO2 by 0.11 and 0.58. Test of error based MAE (mean absolute
error) indicates that the value of MAE for SO2 and NO2 by 0.036 and 0.19. Based on tests of
error with RMSE and MAE, model error is within the acceptable limits.
