Determinar los mecanismos fisiológicos que permiten al calamar gigante (Dosidicus gigas) tolerar

temperaturas extremamente altas y niveles bajos de oxigeno. Se medirá el consume energético en el laboratorio a bordo de la embarcación y se usarán marcas de telemetría acústica para determinar los

movimientos del calamar gigante y su uso energético en el medio ambiente. También vamos a

implementar una omni-direccional sistema de cámara, y una serie lineal de sensores de luz, para medir el

parámetros ópticos de este entorno para determinar mejor cómo los calamares se comunicar y cómo se

camuflan.

Dosidicus gigas es un calamar abundante que se comporta tanto como un importante depredador como

una presa importante para atunes, tiburones, picudos y ballenas en el Golfo de California. Existe una

pesquería de gran escala en aguas de México y Sudamérica, y esta especie es de considerable importancia

económica. El comprender sus patrones de comportamiento, rutas migratorias y requerimientos

fisiológicos dará el conocimiento base para facilitar un mejor manejo de este recurso.

Septiembre 1, 2009 hasta agosto 31, 2012.

El trabajo de campo en el Golfo de California se realizará en la primavera y verano del 2010.

En el barco período de la investigación es 1 de junio hasta 1 de julio, 2010.

Sur y centro del Golfo de California; área aproximadamente delimitada por Guaymas (28°N, 111°W), la

cuenca de Pescadero (24.5°N, 109.5°W), Santa Rosalía (27.3°N, 112.3°W) y la cuenca de San Pedro Mártir

(28.5°N, 112.75°W). Las localidades exactas se determinarán por la presencia temporal del calamar

gigante. No se realizará trabajo alguno sobre o cerca de ninguna isla.

1: Se colectarán calamares gigantes desde el barco de investigación usando poteras tradicionales (líneas

de mano o con carrete). Los experimentos de respirometría se realizarán a bordo de un barco de

investigación estadounidense (R/V New Horizon). Los animales se colocarán en cámaras grandes y se

registrará su uso de oxígeno. Posteriormente serán anestesiados, sacrificados y diseccionados. Las

muestras de tejido se preservarán congeladas para usarlas en experimentos bioquímicos en un laboratorio

en Rhode Island, EE.UU. Otras muestras de tejido (pequeñas porciones del extremo del brazo, la piel y los ojos) se preservarán en etanol para análisis genético en otro laboratorio en California.

2: Se realizarán experimentos adicionales desde Zodiac colocando marcas de telemetría acústica (y

marcas de archivo satelitales) en calamares gigantes y liberándolos en su ambiente. Los movimientos y

niveles de actividad de los calamares se registrarán vía señales de telemetría radio-acústica (o

transmisiones vía satélite desde el Servicio Argos).

3. Se liberará un sistema de video cámara de baja luminosidad desde el barco de investigación para

observar las actividades naturales del calamar gigante sin (o mínimo) uso de luz artificial.

4. Se realizarán arrastres de plancton convencionales para identificar áreas de desove de calamar gigante por la presencia de paralarvas recién eclosionadas. Estos especimenes serán colectados, preservados en

etanol, y llevados al laboratorio en California para análisis genético.

5. Los arrastres de plancton también pudieran colectar especimenes de peces mictófidos y calamares

enoploteútidos de especies no determinadas. Éstos se usarán oportunistamente para experimentos de

alimentación y mediciones fisiológicas.

6. Se tomarán videos submarinos de calamar por medio de buceadores durante la noche para estimar

niveles de actividad en aguas superficiales y coordinarlos con los experimentos de natación realizados a bordo.

7. Se colectarán calamares gigantes durante el día a profundidad usando poteras para analizar su

contenido estomacal y determinar que actividad desarrollan en su rango de distribución vertical más

profundo.

8. Se harán perfiles ocenográficos con un CTD hasta una profundidad de 500 m.

9. En el Golfo de California, estaremos utilizando haz de dividir ecosondas Simrad EK60 a 38, 70, 120 y 200

kHz. El ancho de banda sobre la frecuencia central de cada señal es de 3,5 kHz para la señal de 38 kHz, 6,2

kHz para la señal de 70 kHz, 9,0 kHz para la señal de 120 kHz y 10,7 kHz para la señal de 200 kHz. Cada una tiene un estrecho haz cónico de 7 grados y la utilización de 256 nos pulso largo. El nivel de la fuente para

cada instrumento será inferior a 180 dB re 1 UPA (RMS), la actual orientación para la prevención de

pérdida de audición temporal de los mamíferos marinos (National Marine Fisheries Service, 2003).

10. Vamos a implementar una serie omnidireccional de cámaras para medir el entorno visual 3-dimensional

de los calamares en las diferentes profundidades donde viven.

12. Vamos a implementar una serie lineal de sensores de luz para obtener medidas cuantitativas de la

dinámica de los campos de la luz en las profundidades donde viven los calamares con el fin de

comprender mejor su comunicación y la capacidad de camuflaje.

(SECOND: Project. Refers to the scientific research project, and is subdivided into three sections: general information, collection, and vehicles) A) DATOS GENERALES. (General information) Esta sección se refiere a la descripción general del proyecto de investigación científica. (This section refers to the general description of the scientific research project) 9. Proporcionar el título del proyecto de investigación. (Title of the Research Project) Investigación colaborativa: La hipoxia y la ecología, comportamiento y fisiología del calamar gigante, Dosidicus gigas 10. Describir brevemente el objetivo de la investigación. (Brief description of the objectives of the research) Esta propuesta se refiere a la fisiología ecológica de Dosidicus gigas Dosidicus tanto, proporciona una conexión crítica entre las pequeñas trófica, entre dos aguas organismos y superior depredadores vertebrados. Dosidicus también conecta los distintos ecosistemas. Las migraciones verticales diarias entre las aguas próximas a la superficie y un profundo ambiente de bajo oxígeno (capa de oxígeno mínimo, OML) caracterizar el comportamiento normal de adultos calamar. Identificación electrónica ha demostrado que este calamar puede permanecer activo durante largos períodos de tiempo en el frío, condiciones de hipoxia de la OML superior. Los estudios de laboratorio han demostrado la supresión de aeróbica el metabolismo durante un desafío frío, hipoxia, el metabolismo anaeróbico, pero no parece dar cuenta de el nivel de actividad de mantenimiento. Utilización de la OML en la naturaleza podrá permitir que en la búsqueda de alimento durante el día pelágico de los organismos antes mencionados. Búsqueda de alimento también se produce cerca de la superficie por la noche, y puede Dosidicus por lo tanto ser capaz de alimentar continuamente. Dosidicus está presente en diferentes regiones de la cuenca de Guaymas, en un predicable base de todo el año, y esta importante característica permite que los cambios en la distribución de calamar estar relacionado a la evolución de las características oceanográficas en una variedad de escalas de tiempo (temporada de

décadas). Esta característica hace que el relativamente pequeño y accesible la cuenca de Guaymas un ámbito de estudio ideal. El trabajo previo en esta área ofrece las bases para esta propuesta y las cuestiones que deben abordarse. En primer lugar, ¿cómo la utilización de la OML por Dosidicus varían tanto sobre una base diaria y estacional, y cómo la distribución vertical de la OML y su fauna asociada variar? En segundo lugar, los comportamientos de los calamares se afectada por las condiciones encontradas en el OML, y cómo se compensa discapacidades para minimizar los costos de los la utilización de este entorno hostil? En tercer lugar, ¿cuáles son los procesos fisiológicos y bioquímicos por los que calamar mantener la actividad de natación en niveles tan notable en estas duras condiciones? Estos preguntas serán respondidas a través de un enfoque integrado que incluya la oceanografía, acústicos (sonar), etiquetado electrónico, fisiológicas y bioquímicas métodos. También vamos a investigar los parámetros ópticos y visuales de la fisiología de los calamares de Humboldt y medio ambiente para determinar cómo estos animales se comunican entre sí y esconderse de posibles depredadores. 11. Mencionar los beneficios que generaría la ejecución de los trabajos de investigación científica para la comunidad científica internacional y para México. (Benefits of the scientific research work for both the international and Mexican scientific communities) Calamar de Humboldt), una especie endémica de calamar grande para el Pacífico oriental, donde habita en ambos océanos abiertos y ambientes de plataforma continental. Este calamar es abundante en la cuenca de Guaymas en el Golfo de California donde es un depredador importante con una dieta flexible que incluye organismos pelágico pequeño (mictófido Lanternfish, el krill y calamares), así como pequeños peces pelágicos (por ejemplo, las anchoas). Calamares adultos son las principales presas para los grandes peces depredadores, los cachalotes y otros mamíferos marinos, y proporcionar forraje para los menores muchas especies de vertebrados. 12. utilizadas para el desarrollo del proyecto propuesto pudieran tener un impacto negativo en el medio ambiente, deberá enviar una Manifestación de Impacto Ambiental o bien, solicitarla a la Dirección General de Impacto y Riesgo Ambiental de la SEMARNAT, cal y como lo establece el Articulo 30 de la Ley General de Equilibrio Ecológico y la Protección al ambiente y los artículos 10, 11, 12 y 13 de su Reglamento en materia de Evaluación de Impacto Ambiental por la vía diplomática. En este sentido, se deberán cubrir los requisitos que al respecto se tienen establecidos. Title of the project: _ Collaborative Research: Collaborative Research: Hypoxia and the ecology, behavior and physiology of jumbo squid, Dosidicus gigas

Purpose of the project: To determine the tolerance of Dosidicus gigas to high temperature and low oxygen levels experienced during its daily vertical migration in the Gulf of California. This information will allow fisheries managers to better understand the energetics of the species. Justification for the project: Dosidicus gigas is a large squid of considerable importance in Mexican waters. It is a targeted fishery and an important predator on fishes, squids and zooplankton and is preyed upon by a variety of marine mammals and large fishes. Brief description of methodology: We will determine vertical and horizontal migration patterns using acoustic tracking techniques and will collect squids on hook and line for physiological experiments including oxygen consumption measurements on board ship. We will also be measuring the optical and visual parameters of these animals to determine how they communicate with each other and hide from predators. Seeking to collect: Specimens of Dosidicus gigas and their prey species for physiological and optical experimentation.
