You should have two pieces of tracing paper. Rip one page inhalf. The rip can be neat or messy, up-and-down or sideways--don't worry.

    3. Label the Tracing Paper.

Write "Page A" and "Page B" on the two halves.Write "Page C" on the big whole page.

It's best if you write lightly with a pencil.

    5. Trace the rectangle* from Page "A" to Page "B".

Put Page "B" on top of Page "A". You can see the through thepaper. You can see the rectangle* on Page "A".

Use a pencil to carefully draw the rectangle* on Page "B" whileyou look through Page "B". It's eeeeeeasy!

Don't worry about WHERE the rectangle* will be, on Page "B". Imean, if this new rectangle is in a different place on the pagecompared to the rectangle* on Page "A", that's OK.

Check your work. The new rectangle* must look exactly like the

old rectangle*. Use a ruler and an angle measurer, if you want.

    * A rectangle is easy, bu t any p aral lelogram is OK.

    4. Draw a rectangle* on Page "A".

    Use pencil.

Check that left and right sides are the same size. Check that topand bottom are the same size.

Put Page "C" on top of Page "A". Start in a corner, and tracemany linked rectangles onto Page "C". Look at the photo on thispage. The right side of one rectangle* is the left side of another. The top of one rectangle* is the bottom of another. All therectangles fit together perfectly. There is no gap...no spacebetween the rectangles. This is important. Draw your rectanglesthis way.

Check your work. All the new rectangles* must look exactly likethe rectangle* on Page "A".

Don't worry if you use the eraser many times. This step is noteasy; even experts make mistakes here!

    7. Draw a weird squiggly line on the left side of the rectangle* onPage "A".

Use pencil. Draw lightly; don't push hard. Do not cop y m y l ine.Be original!

    * A rectangle is easy, bu t any p aral lelogram is OK.

    8. Copy that line three times

Put Page "B" on top of Page "A". Copy that weird line onto the leftside of Page B's rectangle*. Then, copy that line onto the rightside of Page B's rectangle*.

Check your work. Does it look like the photo on this page?

Now, put Page "B" under Page "A". Copy that weird line from theright side of Page B's rectangle* onto the right side of therectangle* on Page "A".

    * A rectangle is easy, bu t any p aral lelogram is OK.

    9. Reality Check.

Check your work. Does it look like the photo on this page? Do yousee 4 weird lines? Two should be on Page "A", and two should beon Page "B". Are all 4 weird lines the same?

    12. Use your imagination! What does the shape on your pagelook like?

Is it like a fish? A bird? A lizard, cat, monster, African animal, or asailboat?

Please DO NOT closely copy my lines or theme. Instead, becreative. Use your imagination. Be original. Experiment. Have alook at this wonderfully original fox tessellation made by a kidusing this lesson. Compare that to these pictures done by people who just copiedmy example. They show good hand-skill, but wouldn't their art be

so much more entertaining, if they had trusted themselvesenough to experiment? Have a look at Rhinos and Triceratops

    13. Choose a theme.

I think the shape in the photo looks like a cat. What does theshape on your page look like? Anything is OK. Please don ' t copy

my cat o r rh ino . Be original. Be inventive. Here are some pictures by 9th graders who simply copied thispicture, without experimenting. Sure, the result is a good lookingcat tessellation, but wouldn't it be more exciting to try somethingnew and o r ig inal ? Here are cats, cats, and more cats.

(Hint to teachers: Exot ic , soft -edged, f lexible and variedsh apes are easiest . So, fish are easier than b icy cles, baggycloth es and bi l low y hair are easier than t igh t-f it t ing c lothesand short hair, and nonspecif ic birds are easier than aspecific character like Donald Duck. Here, read m y fu nessay about choosing a theme. I t has lo ts of jokes andi l lust rat ions. )

    14. Tweak the shape.

Can you use the eraser and pencil to make the shapelook MORE like the theme?

Remember: everything you change at the bottom , you

must also change at the top . Likewise, everything youchange on the left , you must also change on the right .

When you are finished tweaking the shape, checkyour accuracy. Are the tops and bottoms all exactlythe same? Are the left sides and the right sides all thesame? This is important.

Don't be surprised if this step is hard, and you use the

eraser many times. Even experts think this step is noteasy. Have fun!

After you're finished tweaking the shape, you can fillin the gaps between the rectangle and the shape.(Look at this photo. Do you see the pink gaps? Colorthem with any color except black or white.)

    15. Trace the shape onto page "C" many times.

Put page "A" under page "C". Move page "C" until one of therectangles on "C" matches the rectangle on "A". With your pencil, carefully trace the shape from page "A" into every rectangle onpage "C".

Repeat this step until all the rectangles are filled with that shape.

Look at this photo. Do you see the places where I made smallmistakes? I will use an eraser to fix those mistakes. Everybody

    makes mistakes.

    16. Erase the rectangles and decorate the shapes. This is the endof the lesson. You did it!

Hints: Use that felt-tip marker pen to make the shapes' outlinesdark and thick. Use a pencil lightly to draw any other lines. Coloronly half of the shapes, like in this photo.

Look at the photo. Do you see dark outlines and big colorcontrasts? I did this because I want you to see easily where one

shape ends and the next shape begins. This is important. Pleasedo this in your picture.
