IPB: NATIONAL YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR INCUBATOR*)

The unemployment rate in Indonesia in 2009 increased 0.5% from the previous year of 8.5%

(www.koranindonesia.com). This is one of evidence that show an imbalance between the numbers

of work force with available vocation today. From the large number of existing unemployment,

about 961.000 people among them are educated unemployed, including students (SuaraPembaharuan, 2009). What a big question for us. This condition may be indicative of the growing

poor quality of the undergraduate college graduates today.

At least, there are three factors that caused the high level of educated unemployment in

Indonesia. First, the low quality of undergraduate graduations that makes them difficult to compete

in getting a proper job. It is usually followed by a lack of student experience in working. In fact,

most company has set a minimum requirement for a two-year work experience in appropriate field

with the core competence of job applicants. This factor often becomes the main constraint faced by

the graduates in finding employment.

Second, the scholars who qualified academically, but still have mental job seekers. This

model of scholars tried very hard to find high-paying job by rely on their diploma and good value of

academic transcript. However, due to more limited employment opportunities and their lack ofability to work in teams, the scholars of this model will also suffer the same fate with the students of

the previous model.

The two factors above is strengthened by three factors, it is the lack of student awareness of

the limited employment opportunities today. Instead, many universities are now starting to burn an

entrepreneurial spirit of their students. It is expected can reduce the level of educated

unemployment in Indonesia.

Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) as an institution that has the vision of becoming a

leading research university in Asia with core competence in tropical agriculture, characterized

entrepreneurship , and harmony, has run several programs to train and prepare students to face the

real world of vocation after their graduation later. Through the Carrier and Alumni Development

Affairs (CDA) Directorate, IPB has organized a program named Student Entrepreneurial Program(SEP), which was started in 2009. As a result, this program has produced many successful

entrepreneurs who are still studying in college. They are Elang Gumilang (businessman of property)

and Ance (Businessman of Fish). Both entrepreneurs are even winning entrepreneurial competitions

held by Bank Mandiri in 2008 and 2009.

In 2010, the 2nd

SEP was presented again by IPB. This program purposes is to create a new

young entrepreneurs who are still studying in college. On the 2nd

SEP, about 175 students are

selected as a candidate who get donation to start their own business. It was prepared about 1.5

billion rupiahs of fresh money to grant the selected candidates to start their business based on their

business plan proposal.

The Student Entrepreneurial Program (SEP) is the evidence of IPB seriousness in achievingone of its visions, become entrepreneurship university. By this program, students should be able to

become a technopreneur, not just entrepreneurs. Students are expected to utilize an existing funding

to run their business seriously in accordance with the planned and the approved proposal by IPB.

Finally, students will have good character as Job Creator, not the Job Seeker.
