In my project the cylinder and sphere mark the multiple centers, and the

overlapping of them generates poche space, acting as both structure and

functional rooms. The spherical objects interact differently with the floor

planes creating various special experience. Some affect the shape of the

floor and ceiling, and some are inserted in between the floors. Three func-

tional poches hold programs that need less light or more intimate control.

The exterior form is designed

in respect to the site con-

text. The lower entrance part

corresponds the residential

buildings and the main part

respond to the massive office

buildings in scale and height.

The curved glass is impact-

ed by the city hall. The roof

terrace on both city and river

side allow natural light in and

views out.

The big sphere extended through three floors hold the children space at

the bottom and the bookshelf ring in the dome, and the openings on the

dome capture beautiful light effect; The ceiling of the periodical room

become the playground for children on the second floor; Smaller spherical

objects hold individual study, meditation and manuscript room inside.

One large poche holds the audi-

torium and group meeting rooms

inside, and the administration and

service space are in another poche.

Each poche provides access to fire

exit.

This brewery located at the border of Findlay Market, a famous Cincinnati farmers market, provides fresh goods

and hosts many social activities and events. The brewery acts as a link between the market and the cityscape.

Expanding the market’s communal space to include a beer garden and put the beer tank on display encourages

the community to learn something about beer production. The dining and the beer production areas are sepa-

rated at two sides of the building, overlooking each other. The curve and the transparency give the garden side

the light-hearted atmosphere and generates a continuous circulation route with various views and experiences.

The the height and architecture style of the existing city blocks. The brown and orange beer bottles on the

façade create light effect and articulate the building’s quality.

This Project is composed of five figured archives held between an exteri-

or and interior surface. While the outside camouflages the shape of the

archives, the interior surface emphasizes their difference. The exterior

surface hides the five figures by creating a coplanar surface that makes a

single object. The interior surface connects the gaps between the archives

using a series of tessellated surfaces.

Pattern, Perforation and Colors.

These are study models which we

used to test the perforation tech-

nique. The tests study color and

perforation conditions. Eventually,

we choose light blue as archive

interior surface color, and red

represents the inter fill. Tubes are

added on some pores, and some

are left out allowing people to see

the red fill from outside.

Large openings are used to create

an overall view into the interior as

well as a view outward. Perforations

of various densities and depths

are used on the exterior surface

to provide multiple focused views

into the interior. These perforations

create three different views into

the occupiable space: through the

archive, the structural poche and the

interior space. Color is introduced

to distinguish the different spaces

within. The exterior surface and

the archive exterior are white, the

archive interior is blue and the inte-

rior surface is red. The color white

connects the exterior surfaces into

a single object, while the use of

blue and red show difference on

the interior.

This apartment has adequate interior and exterior communal space. The

plaza, outdoor swimming pool, and courtyard are exterior public space;

the atrium, double height space and roof garden are communal spaces

inside the building. All of them form a floating space in these two towers.

The idea of the shape of the apartment comes from a ribbon. The middle

part of the building complex can be read as the continuity of two ribbons.

It is lifted up following the movement of a ribbon. A floating experience

close to nature is created in this architecture complex.

Hale Hall supports academic and social activities for OSU students. Hale is

the new home of the Black Cultural Center established in 1973. As an his-

torical building, Hale Hall occupies a significant position facing the South

Oval. For these reasons, the expansion is composed of two new architec-

tural centers. One is in the historical building, facilitating students’ activ-

ities and celebrating Hale Hall’s history; the other is in the new addition,

which builds on relations with the landscape. The individual identity of

each results from its materials, seasonal changes and spatial morphology.

The expansion is consistent with

the OSU framework plan, so that it

supports existing pedestrian circu-

lation. The roof garden on the re-

stored historical terrace forms not

only relationship to the south oval,

but also provides an overlook to the

display garden in the new building.

The “fire” center in the old building

has a double floor atrium and the

original hearth. The central space

is opened up for students’ various

actives by removing the wall and

locating rooms around its edge.

The atrium connection to the office

spaces at the second floor facilitates

communication among students.

The fireplaces mark the center

and remind people of the history

of Hale Hall. The “earth” center

featured by the display garden in

the new addition has transparent

layers that connect views to the

landscape of the South Oval. The

garden brings natural light in and

casts spot lights into the perfor-

mance space under it. The garden

view varies at different times of a

day and during different seasons of

a year. The enthusiastic “fire” cen-

ter forms contrast with the statistic

“earth” center.

Hale Hall holds the collection of

works of art donated by African

American artists and alumni. African

American textile is one the remark-

able works among them. I choose

textile as the façade pattern, for

its grid system provide flexible

opening and solid, and the material

change also enhance the art and

emotion effect.

Inspiration about architecture comes not just came from books and stud-

ies, but also rooted in traveling, crafting and touching real life. From my

travels, drawing becomes another way to record and reflect on my experi-

ences. I also craft artifacts to exercise my creativity. Studying architecture

give me the tool to further engage the world.

37

Page 38: Architecture Portfolio - Yidi Yang

Travel SketchesI went to the study abroad at Europe

for one month and interned in Germa-

ny for two months. After study archi-

tecture, I pick up the habit of sketch-

ing during the trip, which improves

my visual skills as well as enhance my

travel experience.

Digitial Fabrication

Beside studio design exercises, I

also explored the digital model

making and fabrication, demon-

strated by this nurbs and mesh

surface duck model. I also studied

the nature of material, for exam-

ple concrete, wood, glass and

handcrafted a pedestal, in which

process thorough plan and preci-

sion is needed.
