Sri Hesti Heriwati. T 131008005. 2013. Tindak Tutur Ekspresif dan Direktif Dialog dalam
Adegan Pathet Sanga dan Manyura pada Pertunjukan Wayang Kulit Gaya Surakarta Dalang
Nartasabda dan Purbo Asmoro. Disertasi. Program Pascasarjana Universitas Sebelas Maret
Surakarta. Pembimbing: Prof. Dr. H.D. Edi Subroto (Promotor) dan Prof. Dr. Sumarlam, M.S.
(Co-promotor)

Sri Hesti Heriwati: NIM: T 131008005. 2013. Expressive and Directive Speech Acts in the Dialogue of Scenes in Pathet Sanga and Manyura in Surakarta Style Shadow Puppet
Theatre Performances by Puppeteers Nartasabda dan Purbo Asmoro. Dissertation. Postgraduate Program Sebelas Maret University Surakarta. Supervisors: Prof. Dr. H.D. Edi

ABSTRACT
The research studies the expressive and directive speech acts in shadow puppet
performances of the stories Karna Tanding and Dewaruci by Nartasabda, and Brubuh Ngalengka
and Rama Gandrung by Purbo Asmoro, in pathet sanga and manyura. In addition, it studies the
differences and similarities of the expressive and directive speech acts in pathet sanga and
manyura in performances by the two dalangs, Nartasabda and Purbo Asmoro, as well as the
strategies and differences appearing in all four performances.
This research aims to describe the types of expressive and directive speech acts in the
four stories and also explain the differences in the strategies of the speech acts used by
Nartasabda and Purbo Asmoro. In addition, the study endeavours to gain an idea of the
relevance of expressive and directive speech acts in relation to character building, as well as the
response of the audience to the performances by the two puppeteers, or dalangs. The problems
are addressed using a linguistic approach and a primarily pragmatic study, combining Kriedlers theory of speech acts (1998:183) with a Javanese cultural approach, since shadow puppet theatre,
or wayang, is an element of Javanese culture. The research is a qualitative study using a
descriptive research method. The strategy used is a single case study since the research focuses
on one particular characteristic of all-night performances of the art of shadow puppet theatre. A
critical holistic approach is used to study the three main factors, namely the genetic factors,
objective factors, and affective factors.
The results of the research show that based on the context of speech and lingual signs,
each type of expressive and directive speech act has a different number of sub-speech acts. The
most dominant type of expressive speech act in Nartasabdas performance of Karna Tandhing is apologizing and in Dewaruci the most dominant type is refusing. In Brubuh Ngalengka, the most
dominant type of expressive speech act is refusing and in Rama Gandrung the most dominant
type is apologizing. The most dominant type of directive speech act in Karna Tandhing is
commanding and in Dewaruci the most dominant type is also commanding. The most dominant
type of directive speech act in Brubuh Ngalengka is forbidding and in Rama Gandrung the most
dominant type is commanding. The speech presented by both dalangs is essentially
communicative, attractive, of a high quality, and able to captivate the audience, as well as
including elements of tuntunan (guidance), tontonan (spectacle), and tatanan (structure). The
strategies of the two dalangs, as revealed through their use of expressive and directive speech
acts, show a number of differences, due to their different social and cultural backgrounds and the
influence of the different audiences. The similarity in the performances of the two dalangs is that
they are both loyal to the rules and norms of all-night shadow puppet theatre performances,
although Nartasabda is stronger in his conveying of messages or advice when compared to the
performances of Purbo Asmoro. The implicature in the four stories contains various meanings
and messages, such as moral, spiritual, and educational messages which can function as a vehicle
for character building, aesthetical appreciation, and cultural preservation.

iv
Hence, the values revealed in the expressive and directive speech acts in the four stories
are highly relevant to life at this time and can contribute to the development or formation of a
society with a strong character and personality and also strengthen the identity of the nation. The
values of local wisdom contained in the expressive and directive speech acts can be used as a
point of reference for the way people behave in society and in the nation. The response of the
audience to the two dalangs in their performance of the four different stories essentially indicates
the unique and special nature of each story, as an attractive and contextual performance.
