education so that they need big cost of education. It
causes them to look for “how to get money to pay their
education.” At least they use their free time to work,
but the working is not like common. The working is just
need 3 to 4 hours a day is called part time job.
There are many kinds of part time job for example
tutor, online businessman or businesswomen and so on.
When college student has part time job sometimes they
forget their mind purpose as student so that the part
time job can influence their study. In addition I take

RELATED LITERATURES
2.1 Previous Studies
In the following section, I will explain two
previous studies: (i) Perbedaan Hasil Belajar Mahasiswa
yang Bekerja dengan Tidak Bekerja Program Studi
Pendidikan Teknik Bangunan Jurusan Teknik Sipil FT-UNP,
3
and (ii) Does Part Time Job Affect College Students
Satisfaction and Academic Performance (GPA).?
2.1.1 The first study was a research report by Purwanto, et.al
(2008) entitled Perbedaan Hasil Belajar Mahasiswa yang Bekerja
dengan Tidak Bekerja Program Studi Pendidikan Teknik Bangunan Jurusan
Teknik Sipil FT-UNP.
The previous study has research focus relationship
between student’s learning activities and student’s
learning achievement. The differences between the
student’s achievements for the ones who take the part
time job and the students who do not participate in
Educational Program of Building Engineering Department of
Civil Engineering. The research subjects are 277 college
students of Educational Program of Building Engineering
Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering,
State University of Padang in Semester January to June
2012 on 2008 generation.
The similarities with my own study are in having
research object. The part time job to college student and
in research methodology that uses observation college
student and also in the result of this study that the
working students achieved the better grade than the ones
who is not working and the working students do not feel
disturbing. Beside those similarities, there are points
of difference between my current study and this previous
one. The points are in the research subject are some
students who have part time job in Walisongo State
4
Islamic University and in research methodology, I use
interview, questionnaire, and observation method but in
previous study only use observation.
2.2.1 The Second was research report by Tessema, et. Al
entitled Does Part Time Job Affect College Students Satisfaction and Academic
Performance (GPA)?
The previous study has research focus on the effect
of work (number of working hours) on college student’
satisfaction and GPA first by grouping the respondents
into two categories: working and non-working. The
research object is part time job college student. The
research subject is the effect of work on satisfaction
and GPA by grouping students into five categories:
unemployed, 1-10 hours, 11-15 hours, 16-20 hours, 21-30
hours and 31 hours or more.
The similarity with my own study is in the research
object. It is part time job to college student. Beside
that there is point of difference between my current
study and this previous one. The point is in the research
subject, my research subject are some students who have
part time job in Walisongo State Islamic University and
this previous one in the research subject, are public
university that consist of two categories working and
non-working and then students who have work are derived
into five categories those who worked for 0 hour
(unemployed), 1-10 hours, 11-15 hours, 16-20 hours, 21-30
hours and 31 hours or more.

2.2 Related Literatures
2.2.1 The definition of Part Time Job
Elizabeth Walter on Cambridge Advanced Learner’s
Dictionary (2008) defines part-time is if you occupation
part-time or prepare part-time or do part-time work, you
work for only some of day or the week and Job is the
regular occupation which a person does to get money.
Victoria Bull on Oxford Learner’s Pocket Dictionary
(2008; 318) defines part-time is occupation only a part
of the day or week and job is work for which you accept
regular payment or particular duty or piece of work.
Other definition of part time job, According to
Wikipedia, a part-time job is a form of employment that
carries fewer hours per week than a full-time job.
Workers are considered to be part-time if they commonly
work fewer than 30 or 35 hours per week.
And other definition of part time job, According to
job search. about. Com a part-time job is those that
require you to work 35 hours, or under a programmed
amount of hours set by an employer, or less given week.
Four definitions of part-time job have been written
above, but basically they contain a similar definition: a
part time job is an occupation only some of day or week
if they commonly work fewer than 30 or 35 hours per week
where they accept regular payment or get money.
There are many kinds of part time job that has held
by college student. According to Suyadi on Miskin Bukan
6
Halangan Sekolah (2011;95) said that generally, there are
many kinds of part time jobs to college students, for
example : tutor ( private teacher to Elementary School,
Junior High School, and Senior High School), writer or
columnist who writes journal and articles, bisnisman and
businesswomen pulse, agent, editor, and seller. In
addition he also said on Miskin Bukan Halangan Sekolah
(2011; 214) that to college student who have part time
job, they can work freelance, bisnisman and
businesswomen, and tutor.
According to Adam Yazid on Moonlighting (24) said
that a college student who work with lecture can be said
does moonlighting or part-time job.
2.2.2 The Effect of Part time job to college student
Victoria Bull on Oxford Learner’s Pocket Dictionary
(2008; 143) defines effect (noun) is change that causes
in else; results particular look, sound or impression
that.
So Effect part time job to college student is change
that happened by college student who have part time job.
The change connects to their study and their daily
activities.
Based on observation, the writer derived to three
effects of part time job to college student are positive,
negative and both of them effects.
Victoria Bull on Oxford Learner’s Pocket Dictionary
(2008; 342 and 293) defines positive (adjective) is
7
thinking about what is good in a situation and negative
is bad and harmful or lacking enthusiasm or hope. So,
positive effect of part time job for college student is
things that influence increasing or helping their study
and their daily activities. While negative effect of part
time job for college student is things that influence
decreasing or disturbing their study and their daily
activities.
There are many opinions about effects of part time
job to college students. These are positive effects.
According to Laura W Perna on Understanding The Working
College Student (2010; XIII) said that Drawing on the
limited available research, college administrators,
faculty and researchers have expected than 10 to 20
hours per week at work on campus, on the concept that
such a knowledge will increase their integration into and
following persistence at a campus.
The results offer foundation for emerging
institutional policies and practices that are founded on
the experiences and registration patterns of adult
employee who are also students.
According to Laura W Perna on Understanding the
Working College Student (2010; XXI) mentioned also that
the qualitative investigates draw on data from focus
collections lead at multiple institutions to examine the
barriers to academic success facing adult students who
job. The results show differences in the academic
experiences of adult students based on occupation status
8
and hut light on the ways that tests connected to time
and money limit academic success for adult students.
Furthermore based on Suyadi on Miskin Bukan Halangan
Sekolah (2011; 198) has made the difference table between
original student and worker-student.
The difference table between original student and worker-
student
NO Original Student Worker-Student1. Lazy worker Hard worker2. Have narrow knowledge,
paradigmatic, theoretical,
and unrealistic
Have large knowledge,
flexible, realistic,
idealize, dynamic, and
attractive3. Despairing Not despairing4. Disliking challenge Liking challenge5. Can’t manage money and
time
Can manage money and time
6. Future is not clearly or
doubt
Future is clearly or
certain
According to Suyadi on Miskin Bukan Halangan Sekolah(2011; 95 and 198) said that actually, 90% poor collegestudents who have part time job are more quickly afterindependent and successful college graduate, althoughthey could achieve success in slowly and students whofilled with the activity of work even, it turns out itsindependence much more than with a student who just alecture.
9
Furthermore based on Suyadi on Miskin Bukan Halangan
Sekolah (2011; 199) said that on the fact that different
to be demonstrated in the field. A student who only
college more difficult and slow to success with students
who work for business and hard work that students
continue much higher compared with a student who only
college and the creativity of a power that work will
develop better if dealing with it different and varied.
On the other hand according to Hellen W. Akinc on
The Prager Handbook for College Parents (2010; 129) said
that the students may start to work a few more hours a
week, or hop a class here and there because they had to
work late and could not awake in time to go to class or
the boss called them at the last minute and was serious
to have them come in and substitute one night before a
test and so they did not have time to learn as much as
they had planned and then did not do well on the test. It
is important to pay attention and attend carefully if a
student starts to work extra hours, skip class, or the
grades begin to suffer. Sometimes the student will
require to be reminded about the original purpose to
attending college.
Many colleges and universities have policies to that
influence and will not agenda work-learn students more
than 10 or 15 hours per week while some studies designate
that the number of hours students devote in learning has
decreased significantly, still the of thumb is for every
hour the student devotes in class, the student will
10
devote at least three hours on learn, assignments,
reading, and preparation.
In addition according to William E. Hugan II on
Retention of Minority Students in Engineering(1977; 62 to
63) said that those schools that have observed negative
effects of working generally agree that the work consumes
time that should be devoted to academic pursuits.
Generally, the jobs are not related to engineering and
leave very little time for studies.
