THIS IS MY STORY: BUILDING BRIDGES AND BREAKING BARRIERS ..................................................................... 89
FOREWORD BY THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR CLLR MZWANDILE MASINA
Every year at the City’s Godfrey Pitje Academic Excellence Awards, we
acknowledge and celebrate some of the brightest minds in our City, as well as
the educators and schools that nurture the academic talents of these young
people. As a City, we are always extremely proud to see our schools produce
learners who we know will undoubtedly contribute to the betterment of this
country. But this year’s awards are different from other years for we are
celebrating not just academic excellence, but the triumph of the human spirit
over one of the most difficult challenges our country and the world has faced.
Exactly a year ago, the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 hit South Africa and within two weeks of
the first reported case, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a National State of Disaster. Strict
regulations were put in place, including the closure of all schools. Throughout 2020, while the country
fought hard to flatten the curve and defeat the insidious virus that has continued to decimate our
national economy and claim the lives of tens of thousands of our people, schools were consistently
closed and re-opened. Measures had to be put in place to save the academic year – but at a huge cost
to learners, educators, schools, and parents, who had to negotiate a new normal in which virtual and
hybrid learning were the reality.
Many of our learners and schools were unprepared for this radical shift in teaching and learning. There
were significant infrastructural impediments, particularly in schools catering to working-class learners
who did not enjoy equal access to technological implements that became the bedrock of learning. But
the impact of the pandemic extended to more than infrastructure. The mental and psychological
health of our learners and educators was severely affected. Human beings are social beings – we rely
on each other. But in 2020, you had to months without physical interactions that stimulate learning,
and to exist in a world in which the numbers and statistics of casualties became names of people you
knew and loved. It became names of your family members, neighbours and even your teachers.
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our education system was reflective of the societal
constructs in which our learners exist. We know that many of our learners come from working-class
communities, including townships and informal settlements where space is limited. We know that this
had a great impact on their ability to not only maintain safe physical distance needed to keep the virus
at bay, but also to have a conducive environment for studying. Research also suggests that girl children
were especially affected as household chores disproportionately fall on their shoulders while at home.
This is an expression of the heteronormative patriarchal society into which our girl children are being
socialised.
It is for this reason that this year’s awards are different from all the other years. This year we are not
only celebrating your academic excellence but also your resilience in the face of adversity. This year
we celebrate learners who fought incredibly hard to maintain academic discipline under difficult
circumstances, teachers who went beyond the call of duty to ensure that the academic project is not
derailed by COVID-19 and the schools that did their best to create a conducive learning environment
in a world where even sitting directly next to one another had become an impossibility.
While the pandemic impacted the rate of matric passes as well as the quality of the passes, learners
and schools in our province were able to perform exceptionally well. Although overall district
performance declined, all districts in the province achieved above the national average. The Gauteng
Province achieved 45.1 percent in respect of bachelors’ passes, which is the highest percentage since
1994. The province also has the second highest number of distinctions in the country. In the City of
Ekurhuleni, there was a decline in the number of registered candidates who sat for the exams, with
the exception of Ekurhuleni South District that experienced growth in the number of registered
candidates. The said district was also the best performing in the City, with a pass rate of 85.4 percent.
I wish to congratulate Unity Secondary School for being named the second-best performing township
school in the province with a pass rate of an impressive 90.8 percent. The school is testament of the
commitment of teachers and the dedication of learners. It is commitment and dedication that we have
seen across the City of Ekurhuleni in this past year, and I am immeasurably proud.
The City continues to be committed to ensuring that we support learners to reach their full potential
through the availing of bursaries for tertiary education. Despite the financial impact of the pandemic
on the City’s revenue, we remain fully committed to ensuring that our learners obtain qualifications
that will enable them to plough back to their communities. As such, we will continue to fund learners
in their pursuit of higher education, confident that they will plough back to the communities that have
helped shape them.
A hearty congratulations to the class of 2020. You have shown us that only those who dare to rise, lift
themselves above horizons.
Best wishes,
Mzwandile Masina Executive Mayor: City of Ekurhuleni

THIS IS MY STORY: BUILDING BRIDGES AND BREAKING BARRIERS
Hope Moloi ---
I am Hope Moloi aged 23; I applied for the CoE Mayoral bursary in 2016.
Only one of my parents was working at the time and their income was not enough to pay for my fees. I
managed to secure the CoE Mayoral bursary after a very rigorous interview period, and went on to study for
my Bachelor of Arts degree with a core discipline in Psychology and English at Varsity College.
CoE Busury helped me not to worry about tuition fees and was able to focus on my studies without the
burden of worrying about paying my fees. I was able to graduate in 2019 with a few distinctions under my
belt.
In 2020, I was chosen as one of the 10 individuals who will be a part of a one-year fellowship programme at
Global CitizenxBeyGood that is sponsored by Beyoncé and Tyler Perry. Currently I am placed under the digital
campaigns team within the organisation and I am learning a lot about the work that they do to end poverty.
I am thankful for this bursary because without it, I would not be where I am right now.
Lerato Molotsi ---
I was funded by CoE Mayoral bursary scheme from 2016 - 2018 and graduated from the University of
Johannesburg as a Biotechnologist.
The bursary was covered all my tuition fees, accommodation, meal allowance and books. After graduation, I
was selected to join one of the biggest recognised food companies under their Quality Assurance Centre as a
microbiologist. I am considered as an essential worker during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I would like thank Ekurhuleni bursary scheme for making my dreams come true, today I’m where I am because
of the funding I received from them. On my side it was all about dedication, determination and the discipline.
I’m proud to say I was born and raised in Ekurhuleni, overall I'm indeed a product of Ekurhuleni.
To the class of 2020, congratulations and good luck as you begin your transformation from learner to student.
Lutando Mapeyi ---
I received the bursary in the year of 2015 to pursue my studies. It covered tuition fees and books allowance at
that time, which really helped me a lot because I did not have any other financial support.
In 2018 I completed my national diploma in internal auditing and graduated. The following year I had the
opportunity to be part of the City of Ekurhuleni under the Finance Department where I worked as an intern.
Through the internship I am now on a three months’ probation contract at The Dynaste Communication Firm
working as a junior accountant.
Tebogo Mampuru ---
I am the resident of Ekurhuleni in the small township of Tamboville in Benoni. I was a beneficiary of the
Ekurhuleni bursary scheme and qualified as a social worker from the University of Johannesburg.
I entered the Ekurhuleni bursary scheme in 2016 when I commenced my studies at the University of
Johannesburg to study Social Work. The bursary funded my studies until 2019.
After graduating I was afforded an opportunity to work as an intern social worker at the City Of Ekurhuleni in
the Department of Health and Social Development for a period of 12 months. I worked at Lethabong Clinic in
Wattville and Kemston Clinic in Benoni. I also worked part time at the University of Johannesburg as a senior
tutor for second year students studying social work.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the City of Ekurhuleni for granting me the opportunity of
studying to become the social worker. Your efforts of investing in young people is truly a wonderful
investment. Thank you very much!
Ernst Heinrich Rudolf ---
I entered the Ekurhuleni bursary scheme in 2017 based on my 2016 matric marks and started my first year in
Industrial Engineering. The bursary gave me the opportunity to successfully focus on my studies, to achieve
my Bachelor’s in engineering in December 2020, graduating from Stellenbosch University.
I have started with my Master’s in industrial engineering at Stellenbosch University after graduation, in 2021
and plan to graduate in 2022, where I will be entering the workplace with the sufficient knowledge and tools
on my side.
This serves as another opportunity to give thanks to the City of Ekurhuleni, the mayor as well as the staff -
Jullie Beya and Ayanda Khanyile - for the opportunities and the administrative guidance they have given me
throughout the journey.
Kgadi Katjedi ---
I have been fortunate to be part of the City of Ekurhuleni bursary scheme. I received this bursary in 2015
which was my first year of studies at the University of Johannesburg. The bursary funded me for the whole
duration of my studies and I graduated in April 2018.
After completing my studies, I got an internship at a nanufacturing company after which I got a job at a
construction firm for six months. I was unemployed for two months before getting another job at one of the
big four accounting firms, which is where I am today.
I am truly thankful for the bursary I was awarded by the City of Ekurhuleni. It has truly helped me a lot.
Blessing Mohape ---
I studied at UJ (University of Johannesburg ) I thanks to a bursary from the City of Ekurhuleni to study
architecture in 2015 and graduated in 2019.
During 2018 I got an internship at B-arc Africa Architects and the following year was appointed full time.
I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to study, thanks to the City of Ekurhuleni.
I hope you guys get the funding to explore what you want to be and when you do please don’t waste it - not
everyone gets the chance to become what they want to be in life. Note that you learn every day and
remember you if you do what you love you never have to work a day.
Sibusiso Duze ---
I received a bursary from 2015 – 2017 and graduated in 2018 and hold the following qualifications:
BA Law (2017)
National Senior Certificate in General Management (2020)
Money Laundering Management (2019)
Compliance Management (2018)
Board Governance (2020)
I have been employed at Vodacom since 2018 as a Discover Graduate: Legal Compliance and now as a Senior
Specialist: Compliance 2020
Tawane Kamogelo Molotoa ---
I was awarded a bursary from the City of Ekurhuleni in 2016. This came after I was among the highest
achievers within my district based in Ekurhuleni. I remember the day as if it was yesterday when I got a call
from Ekurhuleni informing me that I had been awarded the bursary.
Being a young man from Tembisa and coming from a family that did not have much meant that my chances of
attaining a higher education qualification were slim. But I did not let that pull me down. I worked hard and the
Ekurhuleni bursary came at the right moment. It allowed me to register at the University of Pretoria for my
LLB degree in 2016 and my family did not have to pay a single cent. The administrators of the bursary were
helpful and I was able to communicate with them whenever I encountered difficulties.
I was a part of the bursary scheme from 2016 to 2019, which was the year in which I completed my degree in
‘record time’ as they rightly put it in academia. But, of course, 2020 came with its challenges and the biggest
of which was the COVID 19 pandemic. I, for one, was hit hard by the pandemic as I could not have my moment
on the stage to graduate and my applications for articles at various law firms were put on hold as everyone
wanted to see how things will unfold in the ‘new normal’ that was imposed on us by COVID 19.
But with God’s grace, I was able to collect my LLB degree at the University of Pretoria and in June of 2020, I
was awarded a two-year contract of articles at a firm in Johannesburg. As if God was showing off, in August
2020 one of the law firms that I had applied to prior to the national lockdown of March 2020, called me in for
an interview. I went in for the interview and I was subsequently offered a job to complete my articles with
them. I am proud to say that I am now a Candidate Attorney at Ramushu Mashile Twala Inc Attorneys in
Sandton.
I have been exposed to so much and I am learning a lot. I get to interact with people like Advocate Dali Mpofu
SC and Advocate Thembeka Ngcukaitobi on a regular basis and I am learning a lot from them.
All of this would not have been possible had it not been for the Ekurhuleni bursary scheme. It allowed me to
study without having to stress about how I will pay my fees. I am now truly on my way to becoming one of the
best black legal minds in the fraternity. For that, I will always be indebted to the Ekurhuleni bursary scheme.
All the best to you Class of 2020. May you continue striving for greatness and making the most of any
opportunity that you get. To the administrators and directors of the Ekurhuleni bursary scheme, please do
continue with the good work. There are people like myself out there who are well on their way to making a
positive contribution to the country in their own spheres because of your assistance. Thank you so very much.
Janay Sander ---
My name is Janay Sander and I started my undergraduate studies in 2018 after receiving a full bursary at the
academic excellence awards. I decided to take on the challenging career of Software Engineering by studying a
Bachelor’s degree in Computing at Belgium Campus. By the Grace of God, I managed to stay in the top three
every year with an academic average above 90%.
Throughout the course of my studies, there have been multiple challenges along the way. Every year the
workload would become more challenging and the concepts more difficult to understand. In my final
academic year, I was chosen to take part in an international project alongside the students at Pennsylvania
State University. We were required to build an autonomous underwater vehicle that could identify and
remove pollution in our local rivers. This was exceptionally difficult for me, as I have never worked with
machine learning. Eventually we managed to develop a solid foundation for the next team to take over.
During my last year, we were each tasked with an IT-related research project. I decided to write my research
proposal on the use of augmented reality to improve the geometric capabilities of primary school students to
allow for greater mathematical success in high school.
I am now thankful to have been given a job at Entelect as a graduate software engineer. These past two
months all the graduates at Entelect made it through the toughest graduate training programme in South
Africa, known as the Entelect Bootcamp. We worked in teams for an average of 16-hours a day with little time
for ourselves. During these two months, I have learned more about the industry than ever before and I am
excited for what the future holds.
A word of advice to all the matriculants who are starting their studies in 2021: Make sure the career you are
working towards is something you are passionate about, do not do it for the money. If you enjoy what you do,
you will never work hard a day in your life.
Keamogetswe Pitsoane ---
My name is Keamogetswe Pitsoane and I am from Vosloorus. I got an Ekurhuleni bursary in 2017, just after my
matric year in 2016. I studied BA Public Management and Governance and majored in Public Management and
Information Management.
In 2019 I completed my undergraduate qualification went on to do my Honours in BCom Information
Management. Ekurhuleni paid for my undergraduate studies. It made my life very easy because I don’t come
from money and that can be a serious problem in tertiary. Ekurhuleni took good care of me, paid for my
tuition fees, books (including a laptop), accommodation and gave a monthly food allowance for an entire
three years.
For some it may seem little but for me it was more than enough. All I needed to do was focus on my studies. It
didn’t end there, the fact that I was funded by Ekurhuleni helped me score another bursary for my
postgraduate studies in 2020. In 2021 I started my first job, an internship at a car brands/dealerships as a
business development intern.
I am thankful to Ekhurhuleni for enabling a girl like me to dream and tap deeper into my potential. I hope it
doesn’t end with me because the change that Ekurhuleni brings is a solution for the future of our families,
communities and the entire country. It’s a chance to a better and brighter future irrespective of your
background.
Monica Chanel Smith ---
In 2017 I matriculated from Hoërskool Alberton and started studying for a Bachelor of Arts in 2018 at the
University of Johannesburg.
Early in 2018, I received the news that I have been awarded a bursary from the City of Ekurhuleni. This bursary
has not only been an immense financial help for me and my family, but it has also provided me with the ease
of mind to pursue my BA to the best of my abilities. I was lucky enough to receive the Executive Mayor
Tertiary Assistance Fund throughout my three years of studying.
In 2020 I graduated at UJ specialising in languages [English and Afrikaans]. I am currently studying a PGCE
course at the University of Johannesburg and set to graduate at the end of 2021. Whilst doing this course, I
am also a coach and tutor at Active Kids Sport Academy. This provides me with the opportunity of working
with, and learning from, loving and bubbly children. I love what I do and hope to one day be the best possible
educator and mentor I can be to the youth of South Africa.
Melissa Bekker ---
I am Melissa Bekker and am currently a postgraduate student at the University of Pretoria. I entered the
Ekurhuleni bursary scheme during 2016 – 2017 while I was completing my undergraduate studies.
I completed my BSc Human Physiology, Genetics and Psychology, and graduated in 2018 with a triple major in
the faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. During my undergraduate degree I was nominated as one of
the top achievers and obtained access to the Golden Key International Honour Society. Furthermore, I used
my free time to serve as vice chairperson and treasurer of the faculty committee, NATHouse, which provided
guidance to students, developed outreach projects and actively volunteered at orphanages and public primary
schools.
Thereafter, I was accepted into a postgraduate programme at the University of Pretoria (BSc Honours Human
Physiology – Neurophysiology) which provided me with the opportunity to specialise in neuroscience, which is
still a growing field in South Africa. During my honours degree I had the opportunity to do research on
neuroprosthetics and neurofeedback which provided me with a holistic perspective of the nervous system and
how it further interacts with the mind. I graduated with distinction, cum laude, during 2019 and continued
climbing the ladder by enrolling into another postgraduate degree, MSc Human Physiology – Neurophysiology.
During my research I worked at a neurofeedback facility that specialise in optimisation of abnormalities found
in the electrical properties of brainwaves of individuals suffering from neurodevelopmental disorders,
traumatic brain injuries and mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
This experience provided me with a background of neuroscience research components and how to apply
these principles to a general population. Therefore, I developed a research project that investigated the
effects of infra-slow fluctuation neurofeedback training on a cohort of insomnia participants. During this time,
I had the opportunity to attend the International Society of Neurofeedback Research conference held in
Colorado, USA, which further built on my academic knowledge of the neuroscience research field.
To date my completed dissertation is being marked and I will graduate during 2021 with my Master’s degree.
Thereafter, I will be completing my journal research article which will be published before the end of 2021. My
future career aspirations include becoming an independent neuroscientist and running a practice that
provides scientifically based neurorehabilitation. In conclusion, I know that with hard work, dedication, and
support anything you set your mind to can be achieved.
Tlotliso Hlahane ---
I started with my national undergraduate Diploma in Logistics Management at the University of Johannesburg
in 2017 after matriculating in 2016 and receiving my certificate in January 2017. I was accepted by the
university shortly after.
Initially I applied to the Ekurhuleni bursary scheme in 2016, and on 3 March 2017, I was called for an induction
that was going to take place the next day. I was extremely ecstatic and truly grateful for being considered to
be taken into the programme amongst the many applications that were received. I signed a contract on 4
March 2017 and was funded by the bursary scheme throughout the duration of my undergraduate studies.
The Ekurhuleni bursary scheme faithfully funded my registration fees, tuition fees, accommodation, books and
meal allowance. This lifted away a burden for me and because of this, I was able to focus my attention and my
energy to my studies and excel in them, of which I did. I received distinctions and my academic record was
always positive and exceptional.
I completed my final year in December 2019 and my graduation date was confirmed for 31 March 2020.
Unfortunately, that was not possible due to the coronavirus pandemic that forced the country into a national
lockdown. I then furthered my studies and enrolled for a post-graduate advanced diploma in logistics
management degree, and accepted into the programme at the University of Johannesburg. I studied and
maintained my good grades amidst the coronavirus pandemic and completed them in December 2020. I am
currently registered for my BCom Honours degree in Logistics Management for the 2021 academic year. I am
also a supply chain/operations intern at Pernod Ricard South Africa. My “smooth-sailing’’ ’varsity experience
was possible because of the opportunity I was afforded by the City of Ekurhuleni. I am still grateful and
appreciative to have had a chance like this one. Thank you.
Nthabiseng Mokoena ---
I did my matric in 2016 and it was terrifying in the beginning because there is this belief that Grade 12 is the
hardest grade in high school, but soon saw that it was manageable. I heard about Ekurhuleni bursary scheme
in 2016 and applied in 2017.
I enrolled to do a Bachelor of Pharmacy at Wits University and I can say that it was very challenging. One of
the requirements on the Ekurhuleni bursary contract was that you are not supposed to fail a module because
they do not pay for a module twice, so if you fail you will have to pay that module yourself next year. I think
that requirement motivated me even more to study hard because my fees were quite expensive and I knew
that should I fail I would not be able to pay for my tuition.
Also, through hard work, dedication and passion for what I was doing I completed my degree in four years and
I can say that Ekurhuleni bursary paid for everything in those four years. One of the best decisions I have ever
made was to apply for this bursary because I don’t know how I would have managed otherwise. I got my
degree last year and I was supposed to have graduated in December, but due to the global pandemic we are
currently facing it was cancelled.
Now that I have a degree I have started on a new journey again, so I am currently doing my internship at a
pharmacy in Cape Town. I am certain that there are challenges that I am still going to face along the way but I
believe and know that I will be able to get through them as I have in the past.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the mayor and Ekurhuleni staff for all your help, I
would not be where I am if it was not for you. Thank you.
Ntswaki Bridgette Mohlabi ---
I matriculated in 2016 with six distinctions and was accepted to the University of the Witwatersrand in 2017 to
study chemical engineering. I was fortunate to be accepted by the Ekurhuleni bursary scheme which funded
me for all my years at varsity.
The bursary helped me a lot as I was from a financially disadvantaged background – it covered all my tuition
fees, including the textbooks and accommodation. I recently completed my honour’s in chemical engineering
and am waiting for my graduation and am applying for jobs. All this was not going to be possibly without the
help of this bursary scheme which I will forever be grateful for.
Palesa Tshetlo ---
I am a registered counsellor and completed a four-year psychology programme at the Pearson Institute of
Higher Education; formally known as MGI (Midrand Graduate Institute).
Since completing my studies I wrote and passed the psychology board exam with the HPCSA. After registering
with BHF I was able open my own private practice in Pretoria Waterkloof.
It was in 2018, while in my fourth year that I applied for the Ekurhuleni bursary scheme because I had no
funds and means of paying for my schooling. The bursary helped me find the 2018 year in order to be able to
complete my studies - they paid my tuition as well as covered the textbooks.
I will forever be thankful for the opportunity to have received the bursary, without which I wouldn’t have
completed my studies and most definitely wouldn’t be where I am today; a strong independent woman with a
business of my own – so, thank you once again.
Ntokozo Gobellane ---
I was funded by the Ekurhuleni Mayoral Tertiary Assistant Fund from 2018, which covered my registration
fees, tuition fees, accommodation and book allowance and in 2019 also meal allowance.
The bursary made it easy for me to achieve my goals as a student who comes from a very disadvantaged
background. I obtained a BA in Development and Management (Public Management and governance) and will
be able to contribute towards excellence in good governance where work ethics and professionalism is of
paramount importance in our society and government.
The competency I will be bringing to the job market is problem solving and administration and management
skills, brainstorming new and innovative ideas and I will be able to establish good and healthy working
relationships among team members and provide a leadership role.
Education and learning are a lifelong commitment in order to expand my knowledge and expertise in the field
public governance, I have applied for internships in various government departments and the private sector.
The City of Ekurhuleni states that the focus is on social, environmental and economic regeneration of the city
and communities as guided by the Batho Pele principles through the commitment of a motivated and
dedicated team. As reflected in the corporate statement, I am a product through its education funding.
Neo Sukazi ---
My name is Neo Sukazi and I was a civil engineering student at the University of Johannesburg and funded by
the City of Ekurhuleni bursary scheme from 2016 to 2018 for three academic years, and am forever grateful
for the opportunity. At the moment I am applying for internships in Ekurhuleni.
The City’s bursary scheme is one of the most reliable bursary schemes as it takes care of everything that a
student needs to succeed academically. I had nothing to worry about other than focusing on my studies.
Thank you City of Ekurhuleni for giving me the opportunity - I am more grateful and proud to be an Ekurhuleni
resident because of the opportunities that the City gives to students to pursue their dreams.
Karabo Michelle Kaumba ---
Greetings to the Class of 2020.
My name is Karabo Michelle Kalumba, a former bursary holder with the City of Ekurhuleni for the years 2017
to 2019. I matriculated in 2016 from Tembisa Secondary School with two distinctions - Business Studies and
Mathematics - and furthered my studies at the University of Johannesburg where I obtained my Bachelor of
Accounting degree.
Looking back to 2016, I never imagined myself as a graduate. I applied to the university and for the bursary
scheme because I saw my friends applying; I even applied last minute to show how little I thought of myself.
But when I received a call from Ms Daphney Shoatja, a bursary facilitator that was hands on throughout my
‘varsity years, I realised and instantly knew that there was hope for me. Nothing gave me so much peace just
knowing that all my fees were fully covered, and all I had to do in return was simply PASS and provide proof to
the office each year.
Since graduation (in the year 2020), I got an opportunity to do honours - Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting
Science (commonly known as CTA) using NSFAS, which I unfortunately could not complete successfully due to
the constrains of COVID-19. I, however, hope to complete it in the near future, or study honours in taxation.
To keep myself upskilled in this fast-changing world I enrolled for a SETA accredited, fully paid Information
Technology (IT)-Technical Support Course at iCollege, this year. I hope to secure a job after completion of this
course so I can help better the living standards at home.
Overlooking everything else, the City of Ekurhuleni bursary scheme honestly played a huge role in my journey,
which I will forever be grateful for. From using my social grant (I was still under 18 years at the time) for food
to receiving a consistent monthly meal allowance, from buying outdated second-hand textbooks to using new
and fresh textbooks each year and having my accommodation fully paid without me having to top up the
instalments. I am not a woman of many words, but all I can say is Thank You very much City of Ekurhuleni.
Lastly, I would like to congratulate the Matric Class of 2020 and wish them well on their future endeavours.
Phindile Meshack Konzapi ---
I was a City of Ekurhuleni bursary beneficiary from 2015 – 2016, and graduated with a Bachelor of Accounting
Sciences from UNISA.
It was from 2017 – 2018 that I held an internship within the City of Ekurhuleni (Springs CCC Revenue, under
Billing) and am now enrolled for a postgraduate diploma in taxation with UNISA.
Jennifer Tivane ---
I matriculated #ClassOf2016 and was fortunate enough to be awarded a bursary from the City of Ekurhuleni in
2017.
From 2017 - 2019 I had a support system; the municipality paid for my tuition, my accommodation and food,
they also involved me in many of their activities like the summit held in 2017 at Birchwood Hotel. Unlike most
bursaries there is no obligation, the municipality does not ask much of you, just that you progress to the next
year of study.
Since obtaining my Bachelor of Science degree in 2019, I graduated in absentia (due to the pandemic) in 2020.
Even with the bursary from the municipality, I continued to work hard and I was rewarded when I was
awarded a bursary from one of the biggest banks in Africa to pursue my studies further.
In 2020, I obtained my Bachelor of Science Honour’s degree, the cherry on top being that I completed all
requirements for qualification with distinction. I look forward to graduating in 2021 (hopefully, post COVID-19)
and I am currently employed at the bank.
I am so grateful to the City of Ekurhuleni for funding my studies. I would not be where I am without their
generosity.
To the #MatricClassOf2020: You have overcome such adversity, I mean having to study and write exams
during a pandemic is no small feat. I hope you are proud of yourselves, just take a minute to congratulate
yourself (and others). YOU DID IT! Matriculating is not the end goal, your life begins right now. Continue to
work hard and you will go far, further than your wildest dreams. And for those of you who are awarded the
City of Ekurhuleni bursary, be grateful because you have the support of the most amazing people I have ever
met, people who only want the best for you.
Final note to the #MatricClassOf2020: Go and be great!
Thokozani Kabelo Sibeko ---
The cornerstone of career development is education and it is truly key; it has been such an adventure to have
graduated with a bachelor of business science majoring in business management and public relations.
I was granted a bursary by the City of Ekurhuleni in 2016 and enrolled in the University of Monash Australia
through the South African campus, which was known as Monash South Africa. This is where I discovered who I
truly was and what I was passionate about in doing for the remainder of my future. Through dedication and
hard work I graduated in 2019 with my BBusSci.
Later in 2019 I was fortunate enough to get onto the cities work integrated learning internship where I worked
in a business unit known as EPMO. This was a different and diverse business unit that was supported and run
by intellectual people that thought to fall in love with learning and constant career development and
professionalism.
It is imperative to find out what you want to do for the rest of your life and fall in love with it as this makes
your job much easier, and enjoyable. Studying opened new doors and exposed me to careers that I had no
idea about a couple of years ago and this was so exciting. Being exposed to more opportunity means more
growth and the acquiring of diverse and dynamic skills that you can apply to your future endeavours.
In 2020 I decided to further my studies and keep up with the ever changing market by enrolling into the
University of South Africa to complete my BCOM Honours in Project Management and Organisational Change
and Renewal, and hopefully the next step would be a master’s degree in business and then a doctorate - but
for now it’s about building a sustainable and lucrative career.
With this opportunity I would like to thank the City of Ekurhuleni and the Executive Mayor for their initiative
and investing in our education. This like no other gave me the opportunity to learn and develop new skills, the
foundation they laid in my career development will forever be appreciated by me and my family, like Malcom
X once said. “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those that prepare for it today”.
Mbalenhle Ndhlovu ---
Firstly, I would love to say, “Congratulations and well done!”
I am Mbalenhle Ndhlovu, a prior recipient of the Ekurhuleni bursary fund and received it in 2017 to study a
Bachelor of Accounting degree at the University of Johannesburg. I completed my studies in 2019. Last year
(2020) I did an internship with Openwaters based in Rivonia that specialises forensic audit. Currently I am
enrolled with UJ for post graduate diploma in accounting sciences, also known as “CTA”, which is bringing me
closer to my dream of becoming a chartered accountant.
I am grateful for the opportunity that the City of Ekurhuleni gave me throughout my undergrad years.
Remember, to use all the available resources at your disposal, never make excuses. Work at your own pace as
this is your own journey to success! Best wishes for your future endeavours.
Ruan Badenhorst ---
I was blessed with a bursary from the City of Ekurhuleni in 2016, in my second year of studying for a bachelor’s
degree in mechanical engineering. Before that, I had no idea where I would find the money for the next three
years of my studies. All I knew was that I was exactly where I needed to be, and was going to work as hard as I
could to get where I needed to be.
Fast forward through all the blood, sweat and tears to the end of 2019; I am an engineer and it was all made
possible by the bursary scheme of Ekurhuleni.
In 2020 I joined a metallurgical engineering company specialising in the field of corrosion. I have been involved
in several projects and have been trusted to take the lead in some in my very short time since joining the
team. I live out my engineering dream every day and look forward to many years to come.
No words will ever be enough, but all I can say is thank you Ekurhuleni and good luck to all the matriculants
and students in their studies. Keep working, keep dreaming and most of all enjoy the journey.
Mpho Takalani ---
I am writing this letter to thank you for awarding me a bursary opportunity through the Ekurhuleni bursary
scheme. As a former bachelor of commerce specializing in accounting student with Richfield Graduate
Institute of Technology.
I was further awarded an internship program with the City of Ekurhuleni to gain new skills and significant
insights into both the financial and collecting and analysing data, which is then used in the preparation of
weekly and monthly estimates. I enjoyed assisting with the preparation of year-end accounts and statutory
accounts to improve my skills in financial accounting, but also because it was at this stage of production that I
gained a sense of usefulness. I began to see the results of everyone’s hard work and gain perspective on the
entire time being part of the internship programme.
My internship experience has confirmed my career goal of becoming a financial accountant. I am truly grateful
for the opportunity and getting the most out of my education.
Nonhlanhla Jiyane ---
I studied BCom Accounting at the University of Johannesburg and I was selected to be one of the candidates
to receive a bursary from the City of Ekurhuleni in 2016, which was my first year and I was with them until the
very end in 2019 when I graduated.
Immediately after graduating I got my first corporate job and worked as a debtor’s assistant at the Deutsche
Internationale Schule JHB while simultaneously doing an NQF 5 banking learnership with Absa through Novia
One group.
I am currently enrolled at Milpark Institute to continue with my studies, and am busy with the bridging course
into the theory of accounting (BCTA). I am also doing an NQF 6 financial markets and instruments learnership
with Absa and work part time at the Deutsche Internatonale Schule JHB.
I am very grateful to Ekurhuleni because they are truly a big part of where I am today; they basically kick
started my journey. University was so much easier because there was no financial burden. Registration,
accommodation and getting books at the beginning of each semester was a breeze, all thanks to Ous Daphney
Shoatja.
I thank everyone in the team for assisting me and I encourage every learner who gets this opportunity to take
it with both hands and make the most of it. Not everyone can study from start to finish without any financial
pressure.
Tlotlo Tshegofatso Michele ---
Thank you for the generous bursary scheme. I was very happy and appreciative to learn that I was selected as
the recipient of the bursary scheme in 2016.
I’m a BSc Mathematical Sciences graduate majoring in computer science, mathematics and physics. I
graduated in 2018 and now employed in the banking industry as a quality engineer in the IT department at
Standard Bank South Africa. Thanks to the bursary scheme my dream of working on world class technologies
has come true and have exceeded my wildest dreams.
By awarding me the bursary, you lightened my financial burden which allowed me to focus more on the most
important aspect of school, learning. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the
community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me.
Erik van Zyl ---
At the Academic Excellence Awards of the City of Ekurhuleni I received a bursary from the Executive Mayor to
pursue my studies from 2014 onwards. This bursary was the result of matriculating in 2013 with an aggregate
of 91%, eight distinctions, ending first in the district in information technology and third in the district overall.
I decided to enroll at Stellenbosch University in order to set me up to make a tangible impact on the “real
world”. I successfully completed my BSc Mathematical Sciences with a focus in computer science in 2016,
after which I did Hons Bsc Computer Science and graduated in 2017.
Immediately following graduation I started working as a software developer for Hornet Networks.
Headquartered in Hong Kong, our social network application is the largest social network for gay men in the
world, with a user base of over 25 million, and a monthly active user base of around four million. I was thrust
into the world of remote working which was a massive adjustment at first, but the experience has come in
handy especially during the current pandemic times.
Tsebo Wisdom Mokoena ---
I hail from Vosloorus and my higher education journey commenced in 2014 at the University of Johannesburg,
studying towards a BSc in Computer Science and Informatics, and concluded in 2017 when I attained my
qualification. I managed to attain a bursary in 2016 and was funded until the completion of my studies.
My career started in 2018 at Media 24 (CPT) working as a junior software developer for the 24.com team. Six
months later I secured another position as a full stack software developer at Lumkani (CPT) before moving to
Absa Capital (JHB) as a product engineer.
I am grateful for the opportunities provided by the Ekurhuleni bursary scheme because today I am working in
an industry that is highly disruptive, ever-growing and in demand. I am very passionate about my profession
and I am glad I made the decision to be a part of the IT industry. I am forever learning new skills and
technologies, and I am seeing continuous growth in my career. Consistency, discipline, hard work and having a
clear vision of my goals has brought me this far, and I believe that anyone can achieve their goals and dreams
if they apply the same principles and more.
