Target Audience

Genre Preferences

From this piece of secondary research I can determine that 32% of the general public (over 16) typically enjoy watching Horror films – the genre chosen for my film opening.

The information above suggest that the demographics of the main/target audience for Horror films are under 35, female, and of the middle class (C2). Primary Audience: Females under 35 Secondary Audience: Males under 35

Further demographic information indicated that Horror films are most popular in the Eastern European ethnic groups and the LGB community. They’re least popular with older women.

Favourite Films

When the GB population (16+) were asked to consider their favourites, this research concludes that 15% of those surveyed had the Horror genre as one of their top 3.

Once again, it is clear that the audience whose favourite genre is Horror are the females and the under 35’s.

Stimulating Demand – Future Genre Demand

When aiming for a certain target audience, public statistics on what they would like to see more of should definitely be taken into account to determine how popular the genre is destined to be in the near future and with whom.

A sample representative of the GB Population were asked what type of UK film they would like to see more of. This secondary data suggests that 28% of them want to see more Dark Horrors.

It is no surprise that the middle class, females and under 35’s have the highest percentages of who wants to see more UK Dark Horrors in the future.

Conclusion

From the secondary research I have analysed I can conclude that my genre, Horror is most popular with people under 35, females, the lower middle class Eastern Europeans and the LGB community. These demographics will help determine the content of the films to aim at these audiences (the target audience) or perhaps challenge the stereotypes, however doing that is risky as it may cause the film to appeal to no-body after all.
